The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Send us a textVictarion Greyjoy fights through his opponents and his misgivings about his brother King Euron. He's dispatched to Essos to bring back a fiancé (for Euron) and three dragons, but Victarion has other ideas. Mackelly and Simon ponder who would win The Bachelor: Iron Islands.Chapter Review:Victarion Greyjoy gets back to what he does best: following orders and taking names. The Iron Fleet decimates the reduced naval capacity of the Reach to claim the Shield Islands, which have long protected the mouth of the Mander River. The victors feast in the hall of the vanquished, humiliating and abusing prisoners. The scene is festive (if you are an Iron Islander, to anybody else it's pretty grim), with plunder and revelry for all. But there are some cracks in the facade of unity. Euron wants to sell the captives into slavery against the tradition of thralldom. He awards lordships of the four Shield Islands to redoubtable allies, who just happen to be mainstays of Euron's principle opponents.Euron wants the entire fleet to head to Essos to bring back the most beautiful woman in the world to be his fiancé, and to use the dragon horn to command her dragons. Wiser heads convince him to send only a portion - so he sends Victarion and his Iron Fleet. Game Of Thrones entered its final season as the undisputed king of TV. Every Sunday, millions would take a seat in the church of HBO in hopes of witnessing another Battle of the Bastards. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss needed to deliver a finale so grand it would make King's Landing look like the Iron Islands. But when they were met with grueling night shoots, sloppy production mistakes, and no source material to base their ending off of, the final season basically Red Wedding-ed itself. Asha tries to bring her mother's family to her aid in gaining the Seastone Chair. But she hadn't heard of her uncle Aeron's call to a Kingsmoot. She thinks she can win by force of reason, but her family think that uncle Euron's wealth and magic might prevail. Mackelly and Simon rattle Nagga's bones.Chapter ReviewAsha Greyjoy is on Harlaw, the wealthiest and most populous of the Iron Islands. Her mother was a Harlaw, and their Lord Rodrik has called his bannermen to support Asha's claim to the Seastone Chair. There are many, but Asha's knows deep down that there aren't enough. She arranges for her captives, the Glovers, to be treated with respect and her men to be properly fed. She then seeks out her uncle who, as is his wont, is reading. Rodrik tells her of Aeron's plan to host a Kingsmoot on Great Wyk. This is news to Asha. Euron will go, there is no word from Victarion. She believes she can convince the captains, as the only descendent of Balon. But Rodrik warns her not to go. They'll never accept a woman, Euron has already moved to bribe and intimidate the captains, and the history of Kingsmoots suggests that the losers don't get to leave in one piece. She takes her leave, knowing that despite his protestations, her uncle will be there. She meets Tristifer Botley, a childhood friend. He professes his love for her, but she denies it. He's saving himself for her, she's doing nothing of the sort. He's a lord now, worthy of her hand. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Aeron “Damphair” Greyjoy, learns of his eldest brother Balon's death and their brother Euron's claiming the Sea Stone Chair. He is not happy with that outcome and calls for a kingsmoot to decide the next king. Simon and Mackelly consider the options.Chapter Review:Aeron Greyjoy is drowning men in the sea (to bring them back with the kiss of life) when news arrives that his brother King Balon is dead. Aeron doesn't break down or anything, but he recalls Balon with awe and reverence for his returning the Iron Islands to its traditional god (the Drowned God) and practices (they really don't sow).At Hammerhorn (Lord Goodbrother's seat) Aeron learns further that his eldest remaining brother Euron has returned to Pike. He was banished for life by Balon, but has conveniently arrived back the day after the king's death. Goodbrother wants to know if Euron's claim should be supported, but the prophet needs time to pray on this one.Aeron had spoken with Balon recently, and knows that Balon thought Asha should succeed him - and she too has claimed the throne. But Aeron is skeptical that the Iron Islanders would accept a queen. Theon is believed dead and Aeron despises Euron - he won't have someone so unrighteous on the throne. He doesn't want the honor for himself, so that leaves only Victarion, Aeron's older, but Euron's younger, brother. While praying, he's struck by inspiration: in the old days kings were chosen not by hereditary. He calls for a kingsmoot on Nagga's Hill on Old Wyk. All claimants and captains should go there to choose their next ruler.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Aeron “Damphair” Greyjoy - Youngest brother of King Balon Greyjoy. We decided to get out ahead of some pretty labored metaphors while we're paying our quarterly taxes and getting out ahead of our waterfalls this season, you know, like a Basculin swimming upstream. Okay, now that I'm seeing it written out I see Josh's point. We went to Canalave City and took on Byron in Canalave Gym. We crushed him.
We aren't able to record a new episode this week, so here is a great interview we did with Michael H. of the Atheopagan Society Council. See you next week! S3E41 TRANSCRIPT: Mark: Welcome back to the Wonder Science-based Paganism. I'm Mark, one of your hosts. Yucca: and I'm Yucca. Mark: and today we have a really exciting episode. We have an interview with a member of the Atheopagan Society Council, Michael, who is joining us today, and is gonna tell us about his journey and what this community means to him and his vision for the future and all kinds of cool stuff. So welcome. Michael: Well, thank you very much for having me. Mark: I'm delighted to have you here, Yucca: Thanks for coming on. Michael: Yeah, no, I'm excited. Yucca: Yeah. So why don't we start with so who are you? Right? What's, what's your journey been to get here? Michael: Gosh. Well, I kind of have to start at the very beginning. So my name's Michael and you know, I've, I start, sometimes I go by Mícheál, which is my Irish, the Irish version of my name. And that's something I've been using more as I've been involved in the Pagan community. My parents are both Irish and. They moved to the United States in their early eighties cuz my dad got a green card working over there Mark: Hmm. Michael: and I was born in America. And then they decided they want to move back to Ireland then in 1991. So already I had this kind of dissected identity. Was I American or was I Irish? I never really lost my American accent. When I, when I moved to Ireland my sister who was born in Ireland, she actually has a slight American accent just from living with me. So she never people always ask her, are you, are you American? And she's like, I've never lived there. So it's funny that it's kind of stuck with her, but I moved to Ireland and I suddenly was kind of got this culture shock at the age of five and moving to this new country. And my mother has a very large family, so she has like, two, two brothers and seven sisters, and then I've got like 30 cousins. So , it was a big, a big change from AmeriCorps. It was just the three of us. Moving back to Ireland and. It was a very, you know, Ireland, you know, is, would've been considered a very Catholic country, and it's been kind of secularizing since the nineties up until now. But back then it was still quite Catholic. Like homosexuality was only decriminalized in 1992 and divorce was only made legal in 1995. So, I guess the first kind of sense of, of what I meant to be Irish back then was, You know, you learned Irish in school, you learned to speak Irish in school, and this was very it wasn't taught very well, I would say, and I think most Irish people would agree with that. It's kind of taught like almost like Latin or something as a dead language rather than as a living language. So you're spending time learning all this grammar. And you don't kind of develop that love of it that I think you should. I did go to like Irish summer camp in the Gaeltacht . The Gaeltacht is the Irish speaking area of Ireland, and I kind of became aware of my Irishness, you know, just through being part of all this and also. I would've introduced myself as American when I was little but people didn't really like that. It was kind of a, like a weird thing to do. So my mom eventually told me, maybe you should just stop paying that. And so throughout my I, you know, as I mentioned, it was a very Catholic country. And when I was in the Gaeltacht in Irish summer camp one of the kids said they were atheist. And I was like, what does that mean? I'm like, I don't believe in God. And I was, and in my head I was like, I didn't know you could do that, I didn't know that was an option. . So I kind of thought about it for a while. I became, we started studying the Reformation in school when I was about 14. And then I learned that Catholics believed in transubstantiation and nobody had really mentioned that before. They didn't really teach the catechism very well, I guess. I'd done my communion and my confirmation, but nobody ever mentioned that. We literally believed that the, the body and blood, you know, was that the bread and water? Oh, sorry. The bread and wine actually became literally, And the body. And I thought that was a very strange thing, that that was a literal thing. It wasn't just symbolic. And then we also studied Calvinism and all that stuff. And I was like, then I started to read the Bible and I was like, then it fun, it finally just dawned on me that I didn't believe any of this, and it was kind of liberating. But it was kind of a way of being d. In a very homogenous society too. You could be a bit of a rebel. So I think I was one of those annoying teenagers who was always questioning everybody and having, trying to have debates with everybody about religion and they didn't enjoy that . And so I went through school and I just remember hating studying the Irish language until eventually when I left school. On the last day, I actually took all my. My Irish textbooks and burnt them and I feel I . Yeah. I mean I feel so much guilt and regret about that and I think about that how important it's to me now and that, that was a real shame that, but I didn't, partially I didn't put the work in, but also I just think the structure. Was not there. I mean so many Irish people come out of outta school not really know, knowing how to speak the language, you know, and I think it is an effective col colonization as well, where, you know, you consider English is a useful language and learning French or Spanish, that's a useful thing, but there's no use for Irish in people's minds, which is a, and I find that a real shame and I. could go back and change that. In university I studied anthropology and history because I was very interested in religion. All throughout my teenage years, I was obsessed with learning about world religions, you know, there was a world religion class in, in secondary school. I didn't get into it, but I begged the teacher to allow me to. Into it because I was so interested in the topic. And he was like, fine, fine. And he kind of thought he'd humor me in one class one day and he was like, well, Michael, maybe you could talk about satanism. That's the topic for today. And I was like, well, let's start with Al Crowley. And he was like, okay, maybe he actually knows what he is talking about So, I went, I. I went to the university sorry, national University of Ireland, Minuth Campus. And it's funny because that used to be known as so it's actually, it's two campuses. They're St. Patrick's college, which is like a, a seminary for priests. And there's the I, which is like the secular version, and they're both, but they both share the same compass. So it's funny, it used to be the, the biggest seminary in Europe. They call it the priest factory cuz they pumped out so many priests that sent, sent them all over the world. And it's when you go out and you walk down the corridors, you see all the graduating classes. So you go back to 1950 and you see a graduating class of like a hundred priests. And every year as you're going down the corridor, it gets smaller and smaller and smaller. Until I think the year I graduated, there was like two people graduating as priests. Yeah. So that was, that was a, I decided to study history and anthropology at n Y Minuth and one of the books that I read. Was kind of a gateway into thinking about land and language, which are two things that are really important to me in my, when I think about Paganism. It's a book called wisdom Sits in Places by Keith Bato, bass by Keith Bassell, and. I'm just gonna read a little bit here from the book because he was an anthropologist working with the Apache, the Western Apache, to try and remap the land using the Native Apache words rather than the, the English words. So trying to make a native map and working with Apache people to find all the true, the true names of all these. so this is the quote, but already on only our second day in the country together a problem had problem had come up for the third time in as many tries. I have mispronounced the Apache name of the boggy swale before us. And Charles, who is weary of repeating it, has a guarded look in his eyes after watching the name for a fourth. I acknowledged defeat and attempted to apologize for my flawed linguistic performance. I'm sorry, Charles. I can't get it. I'll work on it later. It's in the machine. It doesn't matter. It matters. Charles says softly to me in English, and then turning to speak to Morley. He addresses him in Western Apache, is what he said. What he's doing isn't right. It's not good. He seems to be in a. Why is he in a hurry? It's disrespectful. Our ancestors made this name. They made it just as it is. They made it for a reason. They spoke it first a long time ago. He's repeating the speech of our ancestors. He doesn't know that. Tell him he's repeating the speech of our ancestors. And I'm gonna just there's another section here, a little, a few pages. But then unexpectedly in one of those courteous turnabouts that Apache people employ to assuage embarrassment in salvage damaged feelings, Charles himself comes to the rescue with a quick corroborative grin. He announces he is missing several teeth and that my problem with the place name may be attributable to his lack of dental equipment. Sometimes he says he is hard to underst. His nephew, Jason, recently told him that, and he knows he tends to speak softly. Maybe the combination of too few teeth and two little volume accounts for my failing. Short morally, on the other hand, is not so encumbered though shy. Two, a tooth or two. He retains the good ones for talking and because he's not afraid to speak up, except as everyone knows in the presence of gar women no one has trouble hearing what he. Maybe if Morley repeated the place name again slowly and with ample force, I would get it right. It's worth a try, cousin. And then he, I'm just gonna skip forward a bit and he successfully pronounces the name, which translates as water Lies with mud in an open container. Relieved and pleased. I pronounce the name slowly. Then I, then a bit more rapidly and again, as it might be spoken. In normal conversation, Charles listens and nods his head in. . Yes. He says in Apache, that is how our ancestors made it a long time ago, just as it is to name this place. Mm-hmm. So this became important to me when thinking about the Irish language because something similar happened in Ireland in the you know, we have all our native Irish place. But in the 1820s the British Army's Ordinance survey came and decided they were gonna make these names pro pronounceable to English ears. And so they kind of tore up the native pronunciation and kind of push an English pronunciation on top. So you have these very strange English Anglo size versions of Irish Place names Yucca: Mm-hmm. Michael: Soin in is is probably better known in English as dingle, but doesn't really have anything to do with the Irish. And there are plenty of, there are so many examples of this and I think when you're trying to learn about a landscape in your relation to a ship, to a landscape, it is important to know the native place. It's something that I think about a lot and I try to learn. One of my favorite writers is named Tim Robinson, and he's well he died in 2020. But I had the opportunity to meet him in 2009 and he was an English cartographer. But he moved to the west of Ireland, to the Iron Islands and also to Kamara. So he kind of moved between those two places. He lived there for more than 30 years, and what he actually did was he went out and mapped the landscape and talked to local people, and he was able to find some of the place names that had been lost over the years that weren't on the official maps, and he was able to help recreate a Gaelic map of those areas. I think that's a really kind of religious or spiritual activity to go out onto the land and walk it. And to name it and to name it correctly. And I think that's what I think my pagan path is in a way. It's to go and walk the land and learn it, what to call it. Cause I think language is the most important tool we have as pagans. Mark: Hmm. Michael: So those are, that's kind of when I started to think about this stuff. I've always been interested in folk. It was actually funny. There was, it started with a video game one of the legend of Zelda video games called Major's Mask Mark: Hmm. Yucca: Yep. Michael: in, in the game, they actually have like a mask festival and they dis they discuss the the history of the festival. Anna was just like, wow, I didn't, I ended up making masks with my sister and we kind of pretended to. A little mask festival of our own Yucca: Mm-hmm. Michael: that you're, you're familiar with that? Yucca? Yucca: Yes. Yeah, I played a lot of it. Michael: Yeah. So, but I guess I really started to think about folklore when when I watched the Wickerman as um, as a teenager. I was probably at 16 when I watched it, and it kind of opened my eyes completely. And we've talked a lot about this in the group. And I. It's watched as a horror movie in a way, but I think I really got into the, the paganism idea of, of paganism as a teenager because of watching the Wickman and just the symbolism and the pageantry. And I also just like the idea. These island people turning on the state in the form of, of the policeman. So that's kind of been something I've that I've really enjoyed over the years, watching that every every May as part of my, my, my annual ritual so, you know, after university, I, I moved to South Korea to teach English, and, but at the same time I was quite into Buddhism. I had been practicing some Zen Buddhism from about the age of 18, and, but not like, more as just a practice rather than believing in any of it. Not believing in reincarnation or anything like that. I just found the ritual of it very beautiful. And I ended up going and doing a temple stay in a, in a place at, at a temple. Up in the mountains and it was very beautiful and really amazing. You know, something you'd see in a movie because the monk, the head monk actually brought us out into a bamboo grove and we sat there meditating just with all surrounded by bamboo. And it was waving in the wind and it felt like a correction, tiger Hidden dragon or something like that. And one of the powerful events that happened on that trip. Doing the Buddhist meal ceremony where we ate in in the style of a Buddhist monk. And the idea is that you do not leave any food behind. After you're, after you're finished eating, you've, you eat all the food, and then when you wash the bowls and they kind of put the communal water back into the, the, the waste bowl, there should be no no bit of food, nothing. It should just be clean water. That comes out of, after everybody finishes washing all their bowls. So we followed all the steps to do that and, you know, some people really, really weren't into it. They didn't wanna do the work of, of being extremely thorough. And there were a few rice pieces of rice in the water at the end and the head monk said to us oh, that will now get, you're, you're gonna cause pain to the hungry to ghost. Because the hungry goats ghosts have holes in their throats, and when we pour the water outside for the hungry ghosts, the rice particles are gonna get stuck in their throats. And a lot of people were like, what? What are you talking about Mark: Hmm. Michael: But I thought that was beautiful because it doesn't, not, you don't have to. It's a story that has a purpose, and that's why, you know, It made me think about the superstitions that we have. And I don't know if I like superstition like these, calling it that. Cause I think a lot of these things have purpose and you have to look for the purpose behind them. And the purpose of that story of the honky go story, maybe for him it is about not causing harm to these, these spirits, but it's also about not wasting food. And I think it, it has more power and more meaning. And you remember. More thoroughly when you have a story like that to back up this, this practice. So I think it kind of made me rethink a lot about the kind of folkloric things that I, in my, in the Irish tradition and that, you know, I think about things like fairy forts, which are, you know, the, these are the archeological sites that you find around Ireland. Like, I think there's like 60,000 left around the country. These, these circular. Homesteads that made a stone or, or saw, or saw that you find all over the country and people don't disturb them because they're afraid they'll get fair, bad luck. The, if you, if you disturb the, the fair fort the ferry's gonna come after you , or if you could, or if you cut down a tree, a lone tree. Lone trees that grow in the middle of fields that don't have a, a woodland beside them, just singular trees. These are known as fairy trees and it's bad luck to cut them down. But I feel like these folk beliefs help preserve the past as well, because, you know, farmers who don't have this belief, they don't have any problem tearing down fray, forts and that kind of thing. They just see it as a, something in the way of them farming, especially in the kind of age of industrial agriculture. Yeah. So it just made, that was when I started to think about how important it is to keep folk belief alive. And I've really, and I really started to study Irish folk belief after that point. And I lived in South Korea as I mentioned. I met my wife there, she's from Iowa and she was also teaching in, in South Korea, and we moved to Vietnam after that. And we lived there for a couple of years, and I might come back to that later. But fast forwarding, we moved to Iowa then in 2013, and I'm teaching a course in Irish. At a local community college, but I always start with this poem by Shama Heini Boland. And I just wanted to read two extracts from it. So the first stands out is we have no prairies to slice a big sun at evening everywhere. The eye concedes to encroaching. And then moving downwards. Our pioneers keep striking inwards and downwards. Every layer they strip, they, every layer they strip seems camped on before. So I, I started with that initially, kind of trying to, as, it was almost like a gateway for my students to kind of look at. Look at Iowa with its historic prairies, which don't really exist anymore. It's all farmland. There's very little prairie land left. I think maybe 2% of the state is prairie. But that idea, that idea of our pioneers strike downwards, and I've been thinking about that a lot as well, that that's kind of a, a colonial look at the land because this land, the American land has is just as camped. As Ireland, and I've been kind of experiencing that more and more. I have a friend who's an archeologist here and just hearing them talk about the kinds of fines that they have. You know, we lived in a town where there was a Native American fishing weir was a couple of hundred years old. It you could kind of see the remains, but it mostly washed away by the time we had. But I did see an old postcard of it from the seventies, and you could see it very clearly. And so just make, and then we always it's become a ritual every every autumn, we go up to northeast Iowa to these, to these effigy mounds, which are some Native American mounds up there on a bluff, just overlooking the miss. Mark: Hmm. Michael: And that's really amazing to look at that and experience and experience that. And you know, I'd love to go back, unfortunately, Shamus, he died more than 10 years ago now, but I'd love to go back and ask him if he would consider rewriting that line, you know, because this land is just as a count on Yucca: Mm-hmm. Michael: and I'm trying to, trying to make sense of that and what it means. As an Irish person living in America, Yucca: Mm. Michael: Cuz we, Irish people are victims of col colonialism, Mark: Hmm. Michael: Irish people, when they moved to America, they just became white as well and had the same colonial attitudes as everybody. And I'm trying to kind of, but you know, there's, there's, there's kind of stories of reciprocation as well. Where during the famine, the Irish famine the, I think, I believe it was the Chota Nation sent Emin relief to the AR to Ireland. Even though they didn't have much themselves, they still saw this. People in need across the water and they sent money to help. And, you know, there's that connection between the Chta nation and the Irish has continued to this day. But I am just trying to figure out what it means to be an Irish person and a pagan living in this country. And that's kind of where I, where I am right now. But to get back to how I got into Ethiopia, paganism I mentioned earlier that I was really into the Wickerman and I found this group called Folk folk Horror Revival on Facebook. And somebody one day mentioned that there was this group called Atheopagan. And so I decided to join and I found a lot of like-minded people. And I've been kind of involved in the community for, for, I think that was maybe 2018. Mark: Mm-hmm. Michael: And I've been involved in the community since then and maybe on a bigger, I've been much more involved since Covid started and we started doing our Saturday mixers. And I think I've made maybe 90% of those Mark: something Michael: and we've, yeah, and we've been doing that for the last three years and it's just been. It's a really amazing, it's one of the highlights of my week to spend time with with other people in that, in that hour and 45 minutes that we spend every Saturday. Mark: Mm. Michael: Mm-hmm. Mark: Yeah, I, I really agree with you. That's, I, it's a highlight of my week as well. Such warm, thoughtful people and so diverse and living in so many different places. It's yeah, it's just a really good thing to do on a Saturday morning for me. And. We'll probably get into this more a little bit later, but the idea of creating human connection and community building I know is really important to you and it's really important to me too. I think there have been other sort of naturalistic, pagan traditions that have been created by people, but they just kind of plunked them on the internet and let them sit. And to me it's. That would be fine if I were just gonna do this by myself. But when other people started saying, I like this, I want to do this too. To me that meant, well then we should all do it together. Right? Let's, let's build a community and support one another in doing this. And so the Saturday mixers, when we, when Covid started, I think. I mean, to be honest, COVID did some great things for the Ethiopia, pagan community. Yucca: Yeah. Mark: yeah. Kind of accidentally, but that's, that's Yucca: Well that's the silver linings, right? That's one of the things we, you know, life goes on. We have to find the, the, the benefits and the good things, even in the challenging times. Mark: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Michael: yeah. I think. I'm just thinking back to when we started. So it's kind of, we have maybe six or seven regulars who come to every meeting maybe. And then we have other people who join now and then, but I'm just trying to think back to the first meeting. I think we, that's when the idea of doing virtual ritual began as well in that first meeting. And we were trying to figure out how to do. Yucca: Was that was the first meeting before Covid or was it as a response to Covid? Mark: You know, honestly, I don't remember. I think it must have been in response to Covid because everybody was shut in and, you know, everybody was kind of starving for human contact. Michael: I think the first one may have been March or April. 2020, Yucca: Okay, so right there at the. Michael: Yeah, right at the beginning. Yeah. And I think, I remember in the first meeting we were talking about ritual ideas and I think the first suggestion I came up with was like I'd love to somebody do like a, describe what an atheopagan temple might look. Mark: Oh yeah. Michael: Yeah. And I left, and I think you were recording the meetings at that time, but we don't record 'em anymore, just so people can feel free to be themselves and not have a recorded recording of themselves out there, . But I know that, I think James who you interviewed recently he, he was listening to that one, I believe, and he came the next week and actually had prepared a guided meditation. Of what a pagan temple would be like to him. And it was a walk through nature. I think that was the first, our first online ritual together. Mark: Yeah, I remember that now. Yeah, and it's been, it's really been a journey trying to figure out how, how can you do these ritual things over a, a video conferencing platform. In a way that makes everybody feel like they're participating and engaged. Right. So that there's a, a transformation of consciousness. But I think we've done pretty well, to be honest. I mean, some of the rituals that we've done have been really quite moving. Michael: Yeah. And I think the ritual framework that you've worked at translates very well to. A Zoom conference as well. I dunno if maybe, if he wants to describe that, what the usual atheopagan ritual would look like. Mark: Sure. We've, we've talked about this before. The, the, the ritual structure that I proposed in my book is basically a, a five step process where the first is arrival, which is sort of, Transitioning into the ritual state of mind from the ordinary state of mind, and then the invocation of qualities that are a part that we'd like to be a part of the ritual with us, which is sort of the equivalent in Wicca or other pagan traditions of invoking spirits or gods or what have you, ancestors, what have you. And then the main working of the ritual, which varies depending on what the purpose of the ritual is. But it can be, well, we've done lots of different kinds of things. We've braided ribbons and then tied, not tied magical knots in them. We've made siles, we've we've done just lots of different kinds of things. And then gratitude expressions of gratitude. The things that we're grateful for. And then finally, benediction, which is sort of the closing of the ritual at a declaration that we're moving back into ordinary time. Yucca: So how does that look in, in a meeting, like a Zoom meeting In a digital format? Mark: Michael, you want to take that one or should I? Michael: So you know, you have maybe, I think usually when we have a ritual more people attend that and so we might have 12 people there and often Yucca: cameras on. Michael: Camera's on. Well, it's optional. Yeah. If you don't feel comfortable having your camera on, that's completely fine and you don't even have to speak. We do encourage people just to you know, leave a message in the chat so you can just listen in. You can engage as much or as little as you want. And you, you, so. We have all the people on in the conference, and maybe we'll try and get some more of the senses involved as well. So sometimes we'll like candles and everybody will have a candle in front of them. I do know for for some of our sound rituals. Mark, you've used two cameras where you, you aim one camera at maybe a focus, like what's one of the examples of that that you. Mark: Well we did that both at Sown and at Yu. So both the Halls ritual and the Yule ritual where I would create a focus or alter setup with thematic and symbolic things relating to the season. and then I would point, I would log into Zoom with my phone and point my phone at that. And then, and then I'd log in separately on my laptop for myself as a person, and then I could spotlight the focus so that it's kind of the centerpiece of what everybody experiences on their screen and sets the atmosphere. Michael: Yeah. So just a virtual focus that everybody can, everybody can virtually gather around. Yucca: Mm-hmm. Michael: Yeah. And I think we've also used a Pinterest board in the past as well for people. I think it was at Sound again, we had that Pinterest board where people could put up notes about. Their ancestors or loved ones that they were That's correct, isn't it? Mark: Yeah. Yeah. Or pictures of people that had passed recently or. Yucca: mm. Michael: yeah. So yeah, there's a lot of digital space that you can use for this ritual. We also try not to involve too many props as well. Because we wanna make it as easy as possible for people of all abilities. And just if you don't have the space for something, for a large proper if you don't wanna make a lot of noise, you know, we're not gonna have you using chimes or things like that. So we try and make it as easy as possible. Sometimes we do invite you to bring some food to eat as well, because, you know, a lot of these are feasting rituals. So we maybe, if you feel comfortable bringing some refreshments, you might want to do. And just have a friendly meal with people online. For example, we're actually gonna start doing I'm gonna be leading full Moon meals every month on the, on the, so the first one's gonna be December 7th. And I'll post, post about that on Discord, and I think Mark will post about that in the Facebook group. Yeah. And so the idea is everybody just comes. Joins the Zoom meeting and everybody should have their meal. Whether you're, whether that's lunch or if you're in a different time zone, maybe there'll be dinner or maybe it's just a snack. And then we'll spend a minute just thinking about the providence of the food and then we'll eat us and maybe people can talk about the food that they're eating and what it means to. And I'm hoping to make that a monthly event that we meet every full moon to share a meal together Mark: That sounds. I, I, I really I have pagan guilt over how little I pay attention to the full moon. I'm, I'm always, I'm always aware of what phase the moon is in, but I, I don't do a lot in the way of observances of the phases of the moon. And so, I'm excited to have this added in to something that I can attend. Michael: Mm-hmm. . But yeah, as you can see from that format, it's very simple. And again, you, if, if people listening would like to attend as well, there's no obligation to keep your. Your camera on, there's no obligation to speak. You just, you can just listen in and just feel part of the, part of the community that way. Yucca: Mm-hmm. So in the mixers sometimes ritual, are there discussions or what else do the mixers. Michael: Usually the mixer is kind of a freeform thing. Yucca: Mm-hmm. Michael: Maybe we'll have a topic sometimes, but usually people just come and do a check in and talk about how they're, how they're getting on that week and if there's anything they wanna discuss, we just open it up to that. Depending on the size of the turn, we may require some kind of etiquette stuff. So if there are a lot of people and we don't want people to. Shut it down or have spoken over. So we'll ask people to raise their hands if they wanna speak. That's, that really is only when there's a lot of people and, and often I, I know I'm somebody who likes to talk, so it's a, I think raising hands also gives people who are less confident, or, I'm sorry, not less confident, just not at, don't feel like interrupting. It gives them an opportu. To to have their say as well and be called on mm-hmm. Mark: Yeah. Yucca: Mm. Mark: I think it's really good that we've implemented that. It, it's, it helps. Michael: Mm-hmm. I think one of the really cool rituals we had recently was for like the ATO Harvest, so that was when was that? That was in September or October. In September, yeah. Yeah. So. We were trying, I mean, usually it's, you could do some kind of harvest related and I think we've done that in the past. But I have a book called Celebrating Irish Festivals by Ruth Marshall. And this is my go-to book for, for, for ritual ideas. And this is, and I like to. Kind of some of the traditional holidays and maybe just steal from them. . So Michael Mass is is the holiday around that time in Ireland? It's a Christian holiday, but it's also it's a Yucca: were older. Michael: yeah, yeah, Yucca: Christians took for the older Michael: yeah, yeah, yeah. you know, it's about St. And he's known for slaying a dragon as just as St. George was known for slaying a dragon. But I thought, well, let's turn this on this head and let's celebrate our inner dragons. Let's bring our dragons to life. So it was the whole ritual was about dragons. And we actually drew Dragons, drew our inner dragons and shared them. Talked about what they. And kind of we were feeding our inner dragon so that they could warm us throughout the coming winter. Yucca: Hmm. Michael: Mm-hmm. Mark: as well as watching the home. Star Runner Strong Door, the Ator video, Michael: Oh yeah, Mark: which you, you have to do if you've got dragons as a theme. It's just too funny to avoid. Michael: That's an old flash cartoon from the early two thousands. That was pretty popular. Mark: Mm-hmm. Michael: Yeah. Track toward the ator. Google it, and in fact, I did a, I did the hot chip challenge as part of that ritual as Mark: That's right. Yeah. Michael: where I ate a very, very hot tortilla chip on camera. And. It was it was painful, but I'm sure, I don't know if it entertained other people, but it was, it was fun Mark: Oh yeah. It was fun. Michael: So, yeah, they're like, I mean, these rituals aren't all, they're, they're fun and they're kind of silly and goofy and but I mean, I thought at the same time they're very meaningful because people really opened up in that one Mark: Yeah. Michael: and shared some really profe profound truth. That was one of my favorites actually, and I hope we do another, another dragon invoking ritual in the future. Mark: Maybe in the spring Michael: yeah. Mark: you do it at, at both of the equinoxes. Michael: Mm-hmm. Mark: so you've joined the Atheopagan Society Council, which is great. Thank you so much for your, your volunteering and your effort. What do you think about the future? How do you, how do you see where this community is going and what would you like to see? What's, what's your perspective on that? Michael: Yeah, so just before I discovered the Pagan Facebook group I had attended A local cups meeting. So that's the covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans. And so it was just a taro reading workshop and, you know, I was, I, I like kind of using these kind of rituals just for their beauty and, but not, for not, not seeing anything supernatural in them. I was, it was amazing to, to find a group that was interested in these kind of things too, but without the they weren't incredulous. So I guess what I'm hoping for is that as we, as we kind of find more people who are, are, are aligned with us, maybe we can have more in. Experiences. That was one of the great, the great highlights of, of last year was attending the Century retreat and meeting all, all these amazing people in real life and being able to spend time together in real life. And I hope that as we kind of, as the word gets out about this group, more and more of us can meet in person or as we are able to, Mark: Mm-hmm. Michael: That's what I really hope for the future that you're finding your, your people that we are, we are being able to get these local groups together and then spend time on these important days of the year. And I believe the Chicago Afu Pagan group was able to do that not too long ago. And I know Mark, your local group meets quite regularly as well. Mark: We, we meet for the, for the eight holidays, for the eight Sabbath. So yeah, we're gonna get together on the 18th of December and burn a fire in the fire pit and do a, a ritual and enjoy food and drink with one another. And yeah, it's a, it's a really good feeling that that feeling of getting together is just You can't replace it with online connection, but online connection is still really good. So that's why, that's why we continue to do the mixers every Saturday. And Glen Gordon has also been organizing a mixer on Thursday evenings. Well evenings if you're in the Americas. And. Yeah, there's just, there's, there's a bunch of different opportunities to plug in and it's always great to see somebody new. Michael: Yeah, I think that would be another hope as well that, you know, if you've been on the fence about coming to a mixer I hope that what we've described today maybe entices you to come along. You know that there's no expectations and you can, you can share, you can just sit in the background and watch, or you can participate. There's no expectations and it's just a nice way to, to connect with people, so, Yucca: how would somebody join in? They find the, the link on the Facebook discord. Michael: that's right. Yeah. So I think, mark, you post it regularly on the Facebook group, and it's also posted on the disc. As well. So, and it's the same time every Saturday, so it's 12:15 PM Central for me, so, and that's like 1115 for you, mark, on the, Mark: No, it's 1115 for Yucca. Michael: Oh, okay. Mark: It's 10 15 for me. Michael: Okay. Okay. Yucca: one 15 for Eastern. Then Michael: one, yeah, that's right. Yeah. Yucca: Hmm Mark: And. Michael: and it's always the same time, and I think we've, I think we've only missed one week, maybe in the last three years. Mark: Yeah, I think that's right. I wasn't available and I couldn't find somebody else to host or something like that, but yeah, it's been very consistent. And I see no reason to think it isn't gonna keep being consistent. But yeah, we, you know, we welcome new people. And if you're not in the Americas, that's fine too. We've got a couple of Dutch people that come in all the time. There's a, an Austrian woman who lives in Helsinki who participates. So Yucca: E eight nine ish kind of for Europe, Mark: Yeah. Michael: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. We've even had on the Thursday night mixer, we've even had Australians join occasionally too. So Yucca: That sounds like that'd be early for them then, right? Michael: yeah, Yucca: getting up in the. Michael: Mm-hmm. . Yeah. But I'd I'd love for some of the listeners to come and join us on one of the mixers and then cuz you know, you bring new ideas. And I we're always looking for new ritual ideas, Mark: Mm. Michael: That kind of bring meaning to our lives and to everybody else's. Mark: Mm-hmm. Yeah, cuz that's, I mean, that's what we're doing, right? We're, we're create, we're, it's a creative process for us. We've got these sort of frameworks like the Wheel of the Year and the, the ritual format that I laid out. Although people can use other ritual formats too. That's fine. But it's, it's an ongoing process of creation and of taking some old traditions and folding them in where they fit but creating new stuff as well. One of the innovations that we, that we've been doing for the l past year or so is if people want to be done with something, if they want to be finished with something in their. They can write it in the chat and then I take the chat file and I print it on my printer and I take it and I burn it in my cauldron. So it is actually being burnt physically. But it just takes a little bit of technical processing before that happens. Yucca: Hmm. Mark: And it's those kinds of innovations that are really useful for online rituals. And boy, if you have new ideas about things we can do for online rituals, I, I would love to hear 'em. Yucca: So thank you so much for sharing your story and your visions or the future with us. This has been, it's, it's really been beautiful to hear and to get that insight. Thank you, Michael. Michael: Well, thank you for having me on. Yucca: Yeah. Mark: It's been delightful hearing from you and, and I, I gotta say, I, I feel like our community is very lucky. You've been exploring religion and and folklore and ritual for a long time in a lot of different frameworks and I feel really fortunate that you've landed with us cuz I like you so. Michael: Okay. Well thanks very much. I like you too, Mark: Okay folks, that'll be all for this week. And as always, we'll have another episode for you next week on the Wonder Science Based Paganism. Have a great week. Yucca: Thanks everybody.

Robb is contrite and says the right things. Walder is disappointed that Queen Jeyne didn't make the trip, he'd wanted to see what would make a king forget his vow, but he concedes that he remembers being young and in love. They break bread together and Catelyn relaxes - now they have guest right, and no harm will befall them.Edmure is pleased with his betrothed Roslin, who cries “with joy” when she meets her future husband. Remember, we welcome comments, questions and suggested topics at thewonderpodcastQs@gmail.com S3E41 TRANSCRIPT:----more---- Mark: Welcome back to the Wonder Science-based Paganism.
In this week's 70th anniversary edition of the BFG Podcast, editor-in-chief Neal Pollack and contributor Chris Farnsworth welcome special guest Meg Gardiner, a crime writer who's just collaborated with director Michael Mann on Heat 2, a sequel novel to his cult classic 1995 heist film. Gardiner and Mann share a literary agent, and the adventure began from there. She describes ride-alongs with the LAPD and conversations with professional bank robbers. Mann shared his treasure trove of photographs from a city in Paraguay where anything goes, and they shared scenes and manuscript pages until a seamless collaboration emerged. Great insight into a bestselling crime novel, only on BFG.Stephen Garrett takes time out of his busy schedule to talk to Neal about 3000 Years of Longing, the latest film from George Miller, director of Babe and Mad Max: Fury Road. This film, about a “narratologist” who unearths a sexy Idris Elba genie while at a conference in Istanbul, doesn't match up with Miller's previous work. It's an ode to the wonder of storytelling that doesn't tell much of a story. But Stephen and Neal are amusing when they talk about it.Finally, Ty Pearson sails in from the Iron Islands to hail ‘House of the Dragon‘, the new Game of Thrones prequel now airing on HBO-related products. It's Game of Thrones all over again. They use the same sets, the same costumes, even the same theme song. And it's got GOT fans remembering what they liked about the original show in the first place. Nothing will ever top early days GOT mania, but HOD is good enough for now. This is modern pop culture, after all, where no intellectual property ever really dies.
We've made it to yet another midpoint, and boy is this one a doozy. Building off the last couple episodes, this is where the tension and the action really takes off, with the episode ending with a shocking, out of nowhere battle as we witness the end of the Three Eyed Raven & the Children of the Forest, the beginning of Bran's ascent to the new position of Three Eyed Raven, the death of another Direwolf, and beloved Hodor. Oh Hodor. While it does raise a few logistical questions as this episode famously introduces time travel, the way it provides a perfect open and shut case of Hodor's condition as a result of Bran's meddling plays out poetically. Elsewhere, Sansa receives news from Littlefinger and her & Jon set out on their expedition to bring the fight to Ramsay's door. Daenerys says goodbye to Jorah, but orders him to find a cure to the greyscale, in a touching tribute to their time spent together. On the Iron Islands, the long awaited Kingsmoot takes place, with Yara losing rather easily to Euron, forcing her & Theon to go on the run. In Meereen, Tyrion enlists the help of a Red Priestess to start spreading the good word of Daenerys across the city, much to Varys' chagrin. In Braavos, Arya is given her first assignment since getting her eyesight back: to kill an actress named Lady Crane who's participating in a play satirizing the War of the 5 Kings. It's another action packed episode on this week's installment of Talkin' Thrones, available every Friday on the #talkintvpodcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support
Wrapping up our graduate school week, I had an interesting experience that taught me a good bit about what is old...may not be dead. Just because loud voices like to announce the death of something, does not mean that the sky is necessarily falling. It's not really a binary paradigm in community banking. Said another way...it's not either/or. It's both/and. See, we have to be good at all aspects of human interaction and human relationships today. If you'll go back and listen to our episode with the Arkansas State students...you'll see that half of them never wanted to set foot in a branch and the other half did. These were well informed students of banking and finance too, mind you. So, with apologies to the Greyjoys of the Iron Islands...what is "dead" may truly never die. While lots of viewers obviously love the first season of Game of Thrones, it's the second season -- which first aired on HBO in 2012 -- many consider the beginning of the series' long-running and well-earned golden era. There's action all over the map: In the far-north with rumblings of 'A King Beyond the Wall,' in Winterfell and the Iron Islands, which stir with and fall victim to the spirit of raiding, across the Narrow Sea in Essos, where we discover a desert city called Qarth, and certainly at King's Landing, which is set to be invaded at any moment. There's a lot more going on, too, which is how Game of Thrones rolls. It's dense with characters and plot. Thus, we do the best we can to not only make sense of it all, but touch on the characters, moments, and arcs that stood out to us most, from the relationship between Arya and Tywin and the drama between Jaime and Brienne to the Battle of Blackwater Bay and the reignition of a fiery old religion. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Theon's nightly nightmares often revolve around his lies, deceits, and the atrocities he's committed. His sister Asha shoots him straight about his dire situation in Winterfell. He refuses to heed her advice and puts his last bit of hope on the shoulders of Reek. Simon and Mackelly raise their eyebrows in skepticism. Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy wakes from another bad dream to learn that his sister Asha has finally arrived in Winterfell. On his way to the Winterfell Great Hall to see her, he's surrounded by bodyguards. Ironborn have been dropping like flies around the castle, since they returned from the mill with the bodies of Bran and Rickon. Theon knows it's Reek who has committed the murders, to keep the secret of what happened at the mill from getting out. However, Theon uses the kennel master Farlen as a scapegoat for the crimes, and beheads him.Asha has brought Theon reinforcements to help hold Winterfell. Unfortunately, she's brought him a mere 10 men. Theon says it's not enough, Ser Rodrik Cassel is riding toward the castle with an army. Asha points out that's something he should've thought about before taking Winterfell. She asks him to give up on the castle and come with her back to Deepwood Motte. He refuses, so she leaves. Theon gives Reek silver to buy men to help hold the castle. He then second-guesses why he didn't do the smart thing and leave with his sister. As dawn breaks over Winterfell, he looks at the heads of the boys on the spikes and thinks of the Miller's sons. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The sea has come to Winterfell. Bran is forced to cede the seat of House Stark to Theon Greyjoy. Mikken the smith is killed and Hodor beaten. Meanwhile, Theon assures all that they'll be treated kindly as long as they follow orders. Simon and Mackelly smell something fishy. Chapter Review: Bran has an extended wolf-dream in which Summer tries to escape the walled godswood. The wolf has no inclination to climb, but his Bran-half leads him up a tree. Summer slips and falls. On impact, Bran awakens to a pain in his shoulder. He hopes Summer is OK. A stranger enters Bran's room followed by Theon Greyjoy. Theon tells Bran to come down and inform the citizens of their new ruler. Bran, Rickon, Maester Luwin, the Walders, and the Reeds, are brought to the main hall. The 30 or so Iron Islanders have gathered the other citizens of Winterfell. Hayhead has a nasty wound, Alebelly has been killed, and Palla (who played with Bran and the Walders in the godswood) has been raped. Theon demands obedience, but Mikken the smith is having none of it. He spits vitriol at Theon until a spear is thrust through his neck and he drowns on his own blood. Fulfilling more of Jojen Reed's prophetic dream. Hodor wails in dismay at Mikken's death and is beaten by Theon's men. All the while Theon claims that the people will find him a fair and gentle lord. The prisoner Reek and Osha both pledge fealty to Theon and are given their freedom. Bran sees the second of these as quite the betrayal, although less than Theon's. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin - Maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Rickon Stark - Youngest son of Ned and Cat Stark. Hodor - Huge but simple man who carries Bran Stark wherever he wishes to go. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Theon is winning easy victories on the Stony Shore of the north against barely defended fishing villages. He and Dagmer make a plan to do something a bit bolder. Theon hopes to impress his father Balon. Simon and Mackelly reckon that they know better. Chapter Review: Theon's Iron Born raiders have taken a fishing village and decimated the Wild Hares with a trap. Only Benfred Tallhart survived and he is in custody. The northerner spits bile and hatred at Theon for his treachery. Aeron Damphair decrees that the prisoner must die for his words. Theon, despite knowing Benfred fairly well, consigns him to Damphair as a sacrifice to the Drowned God. Theon feels little pride and glory in the victory. Innocent villagers and reckless youths do not make for great stories. In his mind, he compares what he's up to with the noble battle of the Whispering Woods. Clearly his loyalties are partly divided. In trying to teach a couple of his men a lesson about squabbling over booty, Theon accidentally kills one of them. The others don't care, this just increases their share. Theon retreats to Foamdrinker and talks with his old teacher Dagmer Cleftjaw, master-of-arms for House Greyjoy. Theon reveals a plan to give them both a better story to tell of this war. Dagmer will besiege Torrhen's Square. The older man doesn't like this plan, but Theon reveals that this is just a ruse to lure Ser Rodrik Cassel and his men out of Winterfell, leaving the seat of House Stark undefended. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Sent to Pyke to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark. Stony Shore - Western coast of the North. Scantily populated and ill-defended. Benfred Tallhart - Eldest son of Helman Tallhart. Captured and interrogated by Theon Greyjoy. Drowned by Aeron Greyjoy. Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy. Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon. Victarion Greyjoy - Younger brother of Balon Greyjoy. Aeron Greyjoy - Youngest brother to Lord Balon. Priest of the Drowned God. Dour and devout. Known as Damphair. Dagmer Cleftjaw - Master-of-arms for House Greyjoy. Captain of the Foamdrinker. Theon views his new ship. Makes a new lady-friend. Admits his inner secrets to her. Discovers he's been tricked. And gets one further slap in the face from his father's war plans. Mackelly and Simon offer Theon some alternatives. Chapter Review: Theon Greyjoy admires his new ship in Lordsport. She has room for 50 oars and a deck that could take 100 men. He's approached by Esgred, wife of the ship-builder Sigrin. They flirt and Theon is very interested. He reckons she is too good for Sigrin, Esgred reckons the new ship is too good for Theon. He invites her to a feast and she agrees. They ride together on Theon's new horse Smiler who he obtained from Sawane Botley, who couldn't cope with the size and fierceness of the beast. Theon is far more comfortable on horseback than his countrymen. He gropes Esgred, but she removes his hand. They discuss Theon's claim to be heir of the Iron Islands and the relative claims of his elder sister Asha (she's a woman, Theon will marry her off) and his uncles Euron (missing two years possibly dead), Victarion (solid but unimaginative), and Aeron (given himself over to religion). Upon arrival at Pyke, Theon is amazed to discover that Esgred is in fact Asha. He sulks all the way to the feast where she, not he, is seated beside their father. After the meal, Balon summarizes their war plans: Theon will harry the Stormy Shore, Asha will take Deepwood Motte, and Victarion will conquer Moat Cailin. Balon cares only for war with the Starks, and trusts Theon with only the most menial of tasks. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands. Sent to Pyke to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark. Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy. Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. Father to Asha and Theon. Euron Greyjoy - Brother of Balon Greyjoy. Been absent from the Iron Islands for more than two years. Possibly dead. Victarion Greyjoy - Younger brother of Balon Greyjoy. Aeron Greyjoy - Youngest brother to Lord Balon. Priest of the Drowned God. Dour and devout. Known as Damphair. The Sea Bitch - Theon's warship. Buzzn The Tower is traveling back to the 80s. Max is in his DeLorean, I'm in the phone booth, and we're going straight to HBO to pitch George R. R. Martin's novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. The Starks, Targaryens and Lannisters are getting a radical makeover. From the Iron Islands to Westeros the locations and stories will remain the same, but we'll need the best 80s actors and actresses to step into these iconic roles. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always, the Hodor to my Bran Stark, Max Sanders. And with that, I am the three-eyed Raven!

Theon returns home to Pike after 10 years a captive. His welcome is not all he had dreamed it would be. His father, Balon, doesn't want to pay the gold price for his crown, he'd rather pay the iron price. Mackelly and Simon weigh the options and worry for Winterfell. Chapter Review: Theon Greyjoy arrives back in Pyke after 10 years away. His heart swells when he sees the kraken sigil flying above the ramparts. He has one last visit with the captain's daughter, telling her of the old ways of the Iron Islands and how she might be his salt wife - basically a sex slave - she's not entirely opposed. But Theon is more concerned with returning his family to past glories. When the ship docks, he's a bit puzzled by the lack of fanfare. A priest of the Drowned God offers a ride up to Pike. The priest is Theon's uncle Aeron, youngest brother of Lord Balon. Aeron was a fun-loving youth, but is now devout and joyless. He and Theon do not get on very well. When Theon finally gets an audience with his father, he's treated as an outsider, an emissary of a hostile foreign force, and certainly not as the prodigal son returned. Theon lays out the strategy, the Ironmen's fleet to attack the Westerlands and in return Balon will be given independence and his crown back. But Balon sees other uses for his fleet that don't involve gifts from the hated Starks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Theon Greyjoy - Heir to the Iron Islands and former ward of Ned Stark. Sent to Pike to bring the Greyjoy fleet into the war to help Robb Stark. Asha Greyjoy - Elder sister to Theon. Oldest surviving child of Balon Greyjoy. Balon Greyjoy - Lord of the Iron Islands. The North sends its demands to King's Landing, knowing full well they won't be accepted. News arrives of various setbacks. Cat determines to solicit help from King Renly Baratheon. Mackelly and Simon consider what Robb's next move should be. Chapter Review: Robb reads his demands of Cersei to her cousin Cleos Frey. He's to take them to her and return with her reply. They include the return of all prisoners, delivery of 10 highborn Lannisters as hostages, concession that the North and the Riverlands are now their own kingdom. In return, all the prisoners taken by the north will be freed, with one golden exception: Jamie. Bereaved Rickard Karstark doesn't even stick around to listen. Cat tells Robb that he did well, but things aren't going great. The Riverlands lords are dispersing to defend their homes against Tywin's raiding parties. The main army is camped at Riverrun with no clear idea of a next step. Clamor is rising for an attack on Harrenhal, but that will cost lives and won't be easy. Robb wants Cat to go home to Bran and Rickon. She says she wants to stay with her father. Later with her uncle Brynden, Cat learns that the Lannisters are building a new army in the West, which threatens to trap Robb in a pincer. They decide that the best way forward is to lure Tywin out of Harrenhal, but he's no Edmure. The only way to make that happen would be to create a new threat that he couldn't ignore. Cat determines to travel south and beseech King Renly to come into the theatre and draw Tywin into action. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Cat and company arrive in Riverrun to find Lord Hoster Tully on his deathbed. With both Baratheon brothers vying to take the throne from their nephew, the Northern lords don't know who to support. The Greatjohn Umber has a creative solution, and declares Robb the King in the North to general approval. The boys dip their lances and consider bending the knee. Chapter Review: Catelyn re-enters Riverrun, where she grew up, for the first time in years. She's escorted to her father's rooms by her brother Edmure, recently freed from captivity in Jamie Lannister's host. Lord Hoster is near death but is glad to receive Cat. He's less thrilled to hear that his brother has come home. The old guy still has smouldering animosity for Brynden, and a fondness for his first grandson Robb. Cat finds Robb praying with the northern lords in the Godswood, where she played as a child. He's too busy to see his grandpa, as news has arrived that Renly Baratheon has wed Margery Tyrell and claimed the Iron Throne. With Tywin Lannister retreating to Harrenhal, the path forward for the northern army is not clear. Stannis has the better claim, but Renly has more (i.e., some) charisma. When it feels like the discussion is going, nowhere the GreatJohn Umber rises and dismisses all these southern kings, they mean nothing to him. The only king he'd follow is Robb Stark: the King in the North. All agree. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Hoster Tully - Lord of Riverrun. Father to Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully, and Lysa Arryn. Old and in poor health. Edmure Tully - Heir to Riverrun. Brother to Catelyn Stark. Brynden “Blackfish” Tully - Brother of Hoster Tully, uncle to Catelyn Stark. Formerly Knight of the Gate in the Vale. Theon Greyjoy - Ward and hostage of Eddard Stark. Only surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, and heir to the Iron Islands. Lord John “The Greatjohn” Umber - Lord of Last Hearth - huge. Lost two fingers to Grey Wind, now fiercely loyal to Robb Stark. Jamie Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Nicknamed the "Kingslayer" for killing King Aerys Targaryen. Stannis Baratheon - Eldest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. At Dragonstone. Renly Baratheon - Youngest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. Recently married to Margery Tyrell and claimant to the Iron Throne. Riverrun - Capital of the Riverlands, seat of House Tully. Support the podcast. Buy a bit of merch from our store. Robb Stark's host lures a large Lannister force away from their siege of Riverrun. Battle ensues in the Whispering Woods. Cat watches and mostly listens, and is rewarded with the capture of none-other-than Jamie Lannister and several of his kin. The boys discuss the shift in the balance of power. Chapter Review: Brydnen Tully reports that Jamie Lannister's forces are split into three, in order to surround Riverrun. His outriders have prevented any news (of the split of Robb's forces) from reaching Jamie, and a series of raids and retreats have shown that Jamie is a bit bored and inclined to chase down the raiders. A plan is hatched. Cat watches through the fog, as northern forces array around a valley in the Whispering Woods. The latest and largest raiding party enters the valley, with Jamie and a large contingent of his besiegers in hot pursuit. Horns sound and the trap is spring. Cat cannot really see much, but she hears muffled fighting. When it is all over, Theon Greyjoy and GreatJon Umber drag Jamie Lannister before her. He came awfully close to getting to Robb Stark, but he now represents a prized bargaining chip. Other Lannister cousins and loyalists are also captured, and the whole direction of the conflict has tipped. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Current Stark in Winterfell. Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Bran watches the Karstarks arrive at Winterfell. He talks to Osha, who warns him of the Others and assures him that the danger to their safety is not from King's Landing, but from north of the Wall. "Tell your man to step aside or there will be violence." says Lancel Lannister. Cersei Lannister replies "I choose violence." Season 6 and “A Dance With Dragons” conclude in spectacular fashion as we evaluate episodes 8, 9 & 10. Brienne and Jaime Lannister lay eyes on each other for the first time since Jaime gave her his sword to find and protect Sansa Stark, King Tommen outlaws Trial By Combat and Brynden the Blackfish refuses to give up Riverrun. Over in Essos, the Masters of Astapor and Yunkai take advantage of Daenerys' absence and launch an all out assault on Meereen. At Riverrun a common foot soldier has to make a choice to either take commands from the man who reformed their army and took back Riverrun from the Frey's, or to take commands from the rightful Lord of Riverrun with a proverbial knife to his throat. Will he make the right choice? The Hound gets his revenge on the strangers who butchered the villagers he had been staying with and meets up with some familiar faces. In Bravos, the Waif corners Arya to kill her once and for all, but only one is accustomed to fighting in the pitch black. Jaquen H'ghar follows the blood trail to the Hall of Faces and makes a shocking discovery as to who's face has been added to the Hall. He turns to Arya and says "Finally a girl is no one." Arya replies "A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell and I'm going home." Back in Meereen, Daenerys returns to her city being under attack and has vengeance on her mind. "I will crucify the masters, I will set their fleets afire, kill every last one of their soldiers and return their cities to the dirt." she declares while getting the debrief from Tyrion. Tyrion talks her down and to do it his way. They meet with the Masters and there is a misunderstanding as to whom is surrendering. Daenerys tells the Masters "We obviously didn't communicate clearly, we're here to discuss your surrender not mine." before taking flight with Drogon and destroying the Masters fleet and armies. At Winterfell, there is a parlay between the Northern houses that have sided with the Ramsay Bolton and the Northern houses/Wildlings that have sided with Jon Snow. Ramsay chides Jon and tells him "There's no need for a battle, get off your horse and kneel." to which Jon replies "You're right, there's no need for a battle, thousands of men don't need to die. Only one of us. Let's end this the old way, you against me." Ramsay doesn't take the bait and tells Jon "I keep hearing stories about you bastard, the way the people in the North talk about you, you're the greatest swordsman that ever walked. Maybe you are that good. Maybe not. I don't know if I'd beat you, but I know my army will beat yours." Jon returns the verbal spar "Aye you have the number, but will your men want to fight for you when they hear you wouldn't fight for them" which draws Ramsays ire to Jon's satisfaction. With Meereen back under control, Yara and Theon attempt to make a pact with Daenerys for the Iron Islands. Rickon Stark runs for his life in vain, the Battle of the Bastards commences. Jon receives aid from an unsuspecting ally. Ramsay's story comes full circle. In Kings Landing, the High Sparrow and others prepare for Cersei and Loras' trial. King Tommen tries to attend but his way is barred by Ser Gregor. Margaery tries to convince the High Sparrow something is wrong, but his arrogance leads them to a fiery surprise. Tommen finds out what happened and takes his own life. The Frey's have a banquet feast celebrating the retaking Riverrun with the Lannister army and Jaime openly questions Walder Frey's importance to his face. Sam arrives at the Citadel and is permitted access to the Library. Ser Davos in Winterfell confronts Melisandre about Shireen's fate in an emotional explosion and Daario Naharis learns that he will not be joining Daenerys and her army to Westeros. Arya exacts her revenge on the Frey's for the Red Wedding as things start to shift in the Stark's favor finally. Bran received safe passage to the Wall from a long lost undead Uncle and we learn there is magic in the Wall that keep the army of the dead at bay. Bran goes into a vision and we learn the truth of a certain "bastard". while Jon Snow holds a meeting in the great hall of Winterfell where the Northern houses bestow the same title upon him as they did Robb Stark. With all members of the royal family dead in Kings Landing except one, she takes the crown for herself and Daenerys is finally on her way to accomplish what she has set out to do since Season 1. Join us for this bombshell conclusion of Season 6 as the Riddikulus Crew breaks down the key points, raises questions and debates topics. As Tyrion tells Daenerys, "You're in the great game now, and the great game is terrifying."
"A girl has been given a second chance, there will not be a third." says Jaquen H'ghar to Arya as we kick off the continuation of Season 6 Game of Thrones Episodes 5, 6 & 7. In the lair of the Three-Eyed Raven, we learn about how the Night King was created. Over in the Iron Islands there is a Kingsmoot for the Salt Throne and Euron Greyjoy pulls off the upset. Meanwhile, Jorah Mormont reveals his greyscale to Daenerys which means his certain death and as he bids her farewell to Daenerys, she tells him "Do not walk away from your queen, Jorah the Andal. You have not been dismissed." at last forgiving him for his betrayal. Bran goes behind the Three-Eyed Raven's back and enters a vision on his own, only to realize his folly too late as the Night King is able to grab him by the wrist in the vision, marking him. The Three-Eyed Raven awakens and knows what has just happened and tell Bran that he must now become the new Three-Eyed Raven because the magic of the lair will no longer keep the Night King out since he marked Bran. Bran asks the Three-Eyed Raven if he is even ready to take on this task, the Three-Eyed Raven tells him no. At Castle Black, Jon Snow is preparing with his war council for the upcoming battle against Ramsay Bolton and the other houses of the North. They realize they are vastly outnumbered so Sansa sends Brienne to Riverrun to request assistance from her uncle Brynden the Blackfish. The Night King arrives at the lair and Meera, Hodor and Bran have to escape with some help from Summer and Leaf. Is it going to be enough though? It will all come down to someone holding a door closed against the many wights. As we cruise into Episode 6, we get an interesting reunion with a certain familiar First Ranger that we haven't seen since Season 1. Sam and Gilly meet Sam's family at Horn Hill which goes about as good as you could expect, Arya screws up her second chance with the faceless men and the High Sparrow outsmarts Cersei, Olenna and Jaime Lannister once more. Brynden the Blackfish has retaken Riverrun and Walder Frey learns of this from his sons and then commands them to retake it using a certain hostage. On the road back to Mereen, Daenerys finds Dragon and mounts him while giving a speech to her new Khalasar. She says, "“Ei khal fin thir nak haan okhe sen dothrakhqoy alo ji qisi mae m’auijazeri ath dineur mae vas ma anha vos khal. Anha vo vakkan sen dothrakhqoy. Anha okkak el yeri. I ask your oath, that you will live and die as blood of my blood; riding at my side to keep me safe from harm. I will ask more of you than any Khal has ever asked from a Khalasar! Will you ride the wooden horses across the Black Salt Sea? Will you kill my enemies in their iron suits and tear down their stone houses? Will you give me the Seven Kingdoms? The gift that Khal Drogo promised me before the mother of mountains as the stars looked down in witness? Are you with me now and always?!) of which she receives a resounding chorus of approval. Now moving into Episode 7, one of our favorite dirty dogs happens to be alive! Jon Snow and Tormund talk the wildlings into fighting with them against the Boltons to retake Winterfell. Jaime Lannister has to come to the Frey's aid with the Lannister army to take over the siege of Riverrun. Now with the wildings secured, Jon Snow, Sansa and Ser Davos take on the grueling task of trying to convince the other Northern houses to fight for them. In Bravos, Arya is gravely wounded from the waif and she may succumb to her wounds as nobody will help her. Meanwhile, The Hound loses the only friends he had and he's ready for revenge. Join the Riddikulus Crew for part 3 on the continuous winding river that is Season 6 of Game of Thrones. This season's breakdown is not for the faint of heart as we will conclude it's evaluation in 4 parts! In the words of Ser Davos "The real war isn't between a few squabbling houses, it's between the living and the dead. And make no mistake, the dead are coming."
"Buried, burned, she's good meat. Feed her to the hounds." Ramsay's final words to Myranda's father as they determine her final resting place. Things start to come to a head in Season 6! Alliser Thorne tells the Night's Watch that he and a few other brothers murdered Jon Snow, Brienne comes to Sansa's aid fulfilling her oath at last and Jaime Lannister brings Myrcella back to Kings Landing under the worst possible circumstances. In Sunspear, Ellaria makes sure weak men never rule Dorne again, Daenerys makes her return to Vaes Dothrak in the most humiliating way and Melisandre has a malfunction with her necklace. Meanwhile Bran goes back in time with the Three Eyed Raven and doesn't want to leave. The Three Eyed Raven tells Bran "It is beautiful beneath the sea, but if you stay too long, you will drown." Back at The Wall, Dolorous Edd returns with some wild allies to keep those loyal to Jon Snow that were held up with Jon's body in the room safe from Thorne. Over in Mereen, Tyrion has a suspenseful interaction with Viserion and Rhaegal. In Bravos, Arya goes from blind, to a beggar, to beaten until Jaquen H'ghar comes along and asks her a few questions. Satisfied with the answers, he tells her "A girl is not a beggar anymore". At Winterfell, Roose and Ramsay Bolton are at odds about how to handle Sansa's escape. Roose tells Ramsay "If you acquire a reputation as a mad dog, you will be treated as a mad dog. Taken out back and slaughtered for pig feed." At this point their Maester comes in and tells Roose that his wife Lady Walda gave birth to a boy and Ramsay congratulates his father Roose on having a newborn son the only way you could expect. In the Iron Islands, the fabled Euron Greyjoy makes his first appearance in the the show telling his brother Balon Greyjoy the King of the Iron Islands "I don't mock the Drowned God. I AM the Drowned God.'' as he ends Balon's reign. Ser Davos has to put aside his personal vendetta against the red woman and ask for the biggest request of his life in attempting to bring back Jon Snow. A ritual ensues and it must have been hot and stuffy in the room because it's only when everyone leaves (except Ghost) we get a breath of fresh air. Continue onwards with the Riddikulus Crew through our next installment of this grand Game of Thrones arc as we delve into Season 6 this week with a detailed breakdown, some great debates, hypotheticals and potential potholes as well! "From darkness light. From ashes, fire. From death, life."

A SPECIAL OF ICE AND FIRE: As winter approaches and Game of Thrones will soon provide answers regarding the conclusion of George R.R. Martin's as yet unfinished Song of Ice and Fire novels, we wanted to talk about that entire situation and how the TV show outstripping the books may affect the story of the series in general. Ariana and Natalie - both book readers and show watchers - are joined by ASOIAF superfan (and wordsmith for another of the great genre television epics of our time) Meredith Glynn to traverse the Seven Kingdoms and consider some of the book-to-screen moments that we loved and loathed. From Dorne to the Iron Islands, we delve deep but barely scratch the surface of this massive feat of worldbuilding, but one thing unites us: we've always got our Sansa ships to get all weird about. Also, Jon/Dany is the worst, goodbye. In Game of Thrones, the people of the Iron Islands believe they have been entitled by God to steal and seize whatever they like. Women, land, possessions, even the rightful kingdom of one’s own brother--all of this is capriciously taken by the ironborn if they think they’d like to have it. "I take what is mine. I pay the iron price,” Balon Greyjoy says. It’s a tradition that the Roman empire, even at its most aggressive and belligerent, never fully embraced. Yet there is something or someone who actually does lives by the iron law and always has: Fortune. Which is why Seneca and Marcus and every Stoic lived with profound respect for her power and dominance. It doesn’t matter who you are, how rich you are, how big your army is, how pious you have been in your life. Fortune can and will come take it from you. The pages of Seneca’s writings are not only filled with stories of powerful people who were attacked by Fortune paying the iron price for their most prized possessions; his own life follows the same storyline. He was exiled, he lost loved ones, his reputation was destroyed, and in the end, his breath itself was taken without recompense. Epictetus too had his freedom taken this way, even partly giving up his ability to walk to a slave owner who paid nothing in return for this deprivation. We measly humans are not mythical characters in Game of Thrones, but we are nonetheless subjected to those wicked economics. We are what’s paid. Never forget this. Never forget, as Seneca said and needed to remember himself, Fortune’s habit of doing what she pleases, acting as capriciously as she wishes, and how little she cares for our feelings in regards to it. Because it will happen. Oh and, now and forever, it’s important to remember: Premeditatio Malorum

THE WORLD IN GAME OF THRONESI read an article that shows that women run the world in Game of Thrones, have you thought about it?Although at the beginning of the series, women hardly have power, things have changed a lot during these seven seasons.Forget the War of Five Kings, the Queens are the ones that rule.Daenerys Targaryen has a huge army and three dragons and has just started the conquest of Westeros. Several women participated in his council of war, such as Yara Greyjoy, who aspires to be queen of the Iron Islands and Ellaria Arena, who deposed the government of Dorne and Olenna, queen of thorns, who in a conversation with Daenerys claims to have known many clever men and have survived them all and their secret is "I ignored them"Ellaria and Yara were captured iat the end of episode two and taken to Cersei Lannister who burned most of his enemies, taking the throne in a spectacular way, but still has to face tough enemies like Sansa, who has just gained control of the North and Arya, now a ruthless killer. It is unclear who will finally sit on the Iron Throne but it is probably a woman. The noun "prince" in Alto Valyrio has no gender, so it will be a Prince or a Princess who will bring "the dawn".Everything can happen.
yolkboy and Lady Gwynhyfvar return with part two of their analysis of the War of the Five Kings. This episode covers the action in the Riverlands, North, Iron Islands, Stormlands and Crownlands, with special focus on the Battle of Blackwater and its aftermath. Game of Thrones never fails to have an eventful episode 9 and season 6's The Battle of the Bastards was no exception. On this week's The Cast Beyond the Wall, Daniel, Austin, and myself break down the highly anticipated battle sequence and whether or not it lives up to some of the other series climactic battles. Jon Snow has seen white walkers at Hardhome, defended the Wall outmatched a hundred to one, and even been brought back from the dead, but that doesn't make him any less a Stark. Leading up to the Battle, Jon scrapes together a strategy and ignores Sansa's advice not to go into battle. Sansa on the other hand continues to withhold the crucial info about Petyr Baelish's armies from the Eerie. Have Ramsey and Littlefinger compromised the elder Stark or was this just a rookie mistake? Despite the title of the episode, this week also featured the biggest set piece we've ever seen in Mereen. Danerys rides Drogon and decimates entire ships from The Masters' fleet while Dario leads a full fledged ground assault with the Dothraki horde. Following the flawless victory, Theon and Yara Greyjoy arrive and request independence for the Iron Islands if they support her claim. We take a moment to discuss the issues with the season's continued abbreviation, particularly as it relates to Mereen. Has Dany's time to cross the Narrow Sea FINALLY come? For the sake of my sanity, let's hope so. The Battle of the Bastards may contain not just one, but two of the finest action set pieces the series has ever seen, but I make the case that it lacks the magical secret sauce that makes Game of Thrones special. Austin and Daniel on the other hand were enamored by the undeniably impressive spectacle.

Game of Thrones season 6 continues to sail its Greyjoy ships full speed ahead in this week's episode Book of the Stranger. Every minute of this episode is packed tight with some of the very best Game of Thrones and The Cast Beyond the Wall brings the fire and the analysis to this week's particularly eventful episode. This week, the Cast is joined by one the co-founders of GoodTrash Media and host of The Film Syllabus, Alexandra Bohannon. Book of the Stranger featured many crowd pleasing moments, but none as long awaited or emotional as the first Stark Reunion. We laughed, we cried, and somewhere George RR Martin felt a deep disturbance in his source material(probably). At long last, Daniel's dreams of whimsey and Stark victory seemed within grasp right before the rest of the team shuts him down by talking the rather unfortunate demise of Osha at the hands of Ramsey. Austin coins the term "Post-Martinism" as we discuss the unusually optimistic turn of events in nearly every storyline this week. After being MIA for more than five episodes, Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish returns and it looks like he's bringing his army from the Eerie into the fold. After experiencing a moment of uncharacteristic fanboy excited, I discuss what his move could mean for the wars to come. If all of the other heartwarming cheer moments weren't enough for you, Daenerys finally returned to form by reminding us all why she doesn't need dragons, unsullied, or knight's to be the epic leader that has been promised. Whether its religious zealotry or Game of Thrones failure to the LGBTQ characters, The Cast Beyond the Wall has this an every episode covered. What did you think of Book of the Stranger? This week on the podcast we recap Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 2 "Home", which is apparently where Reek/Theon is going after saving Lady Sansa and leaving her in the capable hands of Brienne of Tarth. But which home? The Iron Islands or Winterfell to face Ramsay (Snow) Bolton, who proved himself worthy of the title "Most Evil Man in the Multiverse". Other things that make you say, Duh-- Jon Snow arises, thanks to the Red Woman, Cersei is super pissed off, so is Jamie, and Tyrion is the Dragon Whisperer. Also, this episode we review Jon Favreau's THE JUNGLE BOOK, in theaters now, 8.5/10 on our Justice & Doom Meter. Lastly, Shoutout to all the fine folks who chatted with us at NAB 2016! Check out all of our interviews in the "NAB 2016 Interviews" Playlist. They include interviews with Adobe, Sony, Canon, AJA Video, BlueFish444, Blackmagic Design, Boris FX and more.

Game of Thrones season 6 returned with a notably strong sophomore outing filled major coups, unexpected plot turns, and even a little bit of Tyrion dragon whispering action. The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to recap, theorize, and analyze the scene by scene break down of a scene by scene betrayals. This week marks the return of the majorly MIA Greyjoys. After being away from the action for years, it looks the House is back to sow some major storylines. What better way to mark the return of the "winner" of the War of the five kings than a good old fashion pirate mutiny. Austin chimes in with his thoughts on Balon's mysterious brother and what it could mean for later in the season. There are a number of cool moments including Jaime's standoff with High Sparrow, but the really moving and shaking in this episode was happening in the North. In a shocking turn of events, Ramsey Bolton finally crossed the line and took out Roose. We try to decide how many of the Bolton's numbered days are left. We also can't wrap up the discussion without talking Bran's newfound superpower to look into the past or Jon Snow's awakening. What did you think of the closing moments, and will the Greyjoys make a major return this year? Sound off in comments and we'll read your thoughts on air next week! Game of Thrones has never been shy about its twists, but this week was particularly eventful. The second episode of Season Six continues the momentum of the premiere as it veers back and forth between leftover over plots about the Iron Islands to uncharted territory with Bran, Arya and the Night’s Watch. Here's Johnny! - We know it’s a shocker, but he’s back! We refer, of course, to Bran Stark, who is warging and time-warping from a deep hole, right next to Hodor. Also we break down who’s in charge in King’s Landing, Mereen, Braavos, Winterfell, the Iron Islands, and at Castle Black. At Castle Black things just keep getting more and more complicated.
