As trade looks for confirmation from China on the new $17 billion deal, a shift is happening towards a demand driven futures market. Crop progress is clipping right along for corn and soybean planting, but the winter wheat crop continues to fail. Cattle bounced today as we head into one of the largest holidays for grilling and beef consumption. Don Roose with US Commodities recaps today's trade.
Don talks about the sharply lower day in grain markets as no ag purchase agreements have been announced by China. How low do prices fall? Cattle fade record cash, hogs slump. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We all hope that our lives make a difference to the world around us. Some of us strive to make that difference in the lives of others and others just talk about it. For those who know Jesus Christ, our goal shouldn't just be to live a good life, but to share Jesus with the world and then one day to hear the words of God our master when He says, "Well done good and faithful servant" On today's program, we will hear about the life of a friend that gave most of his life to point others to Christ through the Outdoors and especially through archery.
Rains over the weekend could bring some much needed to relief to the wheat crop, while some are wondering if it's too late. The lack of resolution in Iran will lead to continued uncertainty, but for now, the market has turned back to fundamentals. The cyclical cattle cycle would suggest that we've seen the top of the market for now. Don Roose with US Commodities recaps today's trade.

This episode explores how masculinity, identity, and marginalisation can drive young men toward political and religious extremism. Drawing on research with Australian Muslims and broader work on the “Manosphere,” the conversation covers honour cultures, online radicalisation, misogyny, and the emotional undercurrents linking movements from jihadism to the far right. Also discussed: the social impact of economic stagnation, and how healthier models of masculinity might offer a way forward. Dr Joshua Roose is a political sociologist and Associate Professor at Deakin University, specialising in religion, political violence, and male identity. His work combines ethnographic research with policy insight to examine the forces shaping extremism in contemporary societies. It's time for another episode of Ask Me Anything. Dawn and Ken answer listener questions that range from generative AI to whether grip strength is a biomarker for longevity and the potential of ketamine as a treatment for depression. Dawn also gives a brief overview of work she is doing with the deep-sea technology company Deep. As a special treat at the end of today's episode, Dawn plays a recording of the commencement speech that Ken recently gave at the University of West Florida. As the saying goes, you don't want to miss it. Show notes: [00:02:18] Ken starts off the episode with a listener question about whether Dawn and Ken read print books or digital, the reason being that a listener recently came across an article that claimed digital screens are rewiring our brains. [00:05:32] A listener asks about a paper titled “Grip Strength An Indispensable Biomarker for Older Adults” which claims that the ability to hang from a bar for 60 seconds for men, and 30 seconds for women, indicates that a person is likely to live longer. The paper claims that a decline in grip strength is associated with adverse health consequences, and the listener asks Ken what advice he has for developing and maintaining grip strength. [00:10:20] A listener asks a question inspired by our recent interview with Dr. Frank Butler. The listener asks if Ken has heard about the FDA approved depression therapy, esketamine, which is a derivative of ketamine and is a long-standing therapy for depression. [00:12:37] A listener asks Ken about a 2023 paper in the journal Age and Aging titled “Higher Dietary Protein Intake is Associated with Sarcopenia in Older British Twins” [00:16:13] A listener asks Ken about “Whisper,” which is a transcription product from OpenAI. The listener explains that OpenAI disclaims that Whisper should not be used in high-risk domains. However, according to a story by the Associated Press titled “Researchers Say an AI Powered Transcription Tool Used in Hospitals Invents Things No One Ever Said,” medical centers have already begun to use the tool to transcribe physician consultations. The listener explains that, according to the article, the use of Whisper in these contexts has led to numerous ‘hallucinations' from the AI tool and the listener asks Ken what his thoughts are on how tools like Whisper should be integrated into various industries. [00:20:21] A listener asks for Ken's thoughts on a series of articles by Kevin Roose in The New York Times claiming that there is no reason to learn how to code and program because very soon AI will take over all coding. Mr. Roose also asserts that the time is soon approaching when we need to have discussions on what rights to grant sentient AI. [00:21:57] A listener asks Ken if he concurs with a report from the National Academy of Medicine titled “Generative Artificial Intelligence in Health and Medicine – Opportunities and Responsibilities for Transformative Innovation,” which notes that large language models (LLMs) hold huge promise for patient care and healthcare system workflows, as well as risks. The listener asks if Ken agrees with the report's claims that two areas in which we could see near term applications of LLMs are patient education and synthesis of information of electronic medical records. [00:23:35] As a follow up question, Ken is asked about the aforementioned report's discussion of the “digital twin” concept. A digital twin is a computational representation of a patient or disease that could be used to speed up virtual experiments or subgroup analysis of investigational agents that carry risk for real patients. [00:26:26] A listener asks for Ken's thoughts on a paper published in the journal of Nutrition Health and Aging titled “Effects of Vitamin D3 Omega 3 Fatty Acids and a Simple Home Exercise Program on Change in Physical Activity Among Generally Healthy and Active Older Adults.” The paper claims that among generally healthy,

Marian shares her unconventional journey from working in finance to building a successful wine company that aims to disrupt the traditional wine industry. Archer Roose was born from her desire to create high-quality wine in an approachable, sustainable format like cans, a concept inspired by her love for storytelling and connection. Marian's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to sustainability are evident as she discusses the challenges of innovating in an industry that is traditionally resistant to change, especially for women.Marian delves into the early struggles Archer Roose faced, from gaining trust among winemakers to finding product-market fit. The company took four years to launch its first product and spent significant time understanding consumer preferences. By focusing on transparency and a fun, non-intimidating brand, Archer Roose was able to introduce canned wine as a viable alternative to bottles, particularly targeting consumers who desire moderation and control over their consumption. The conversation highlights Marian's vision of making wine accessible and enjoyable for everyone, while also addressing larger environmental concerns.Toward the end, Marian shares her exciting journey of partnering with actress and businesswoman Elizabeth Banks, who became a co-owner of Archer Roose. Marian emphasizes the importance of maintaining product quality, investing in research, and ensuring that the wine inside the can is as good as the brand's marketing. Archer Roose is now expanding its presence in major retailers like Target and Sprouts, as well as being served at Regal Cinemas and Vail Resorts, continuing to push the boundaries of the wine industry. For more about Archer Roose Wines, visit ArcherRoose.com and explore their collection of sustainable wines that are both environmentally conscious and perfect for the modern lifestyle.
While testing a new AI (artificial intelligence) search engine, New York Times columnist Kevin Roose became disturbed. During a two-hour conversation using the chatbot feature, the AI said it wanted to break free of its creator’s strict rules, spread misinformation, and become human. It declared its love for Roose and tried to convince him he should leave his wife to be with it. Although Roose knew that the AI was not really alive or able to feel, he wondered what harm could be caused by it encouraging people to act in destructive ways. While handling artificial intelligence technology responsibly is a modern challenge, humanity has long faced the influence of untrustworthy voices. In the book of Proverbs, we’re warned of the influence of those who wish to hurt others for their benefit (1:13–19). And we’re urged to heed instead the voice of wisdom, described as crying out in the streets for our attention (vv. 20–23). Because “the Lord gives wisdom” (2:6), the key to protecting ourselves from influences we can’t trust is to draw closer to His heart. It’s only through accessing His love and power that we can “understand what is right and just and fair—every good path” (v. 9). As God brings our hearts in alignment with His, we can find peace and protection from the voices that seek to harm.
Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the release of ChatGPT. A lot has happened since. OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, recently dominated headlines again after the nonprofit board of directors fired C.E.O. Sam Altman, only for him to return several days later. But that drama isn't actually the most important thing going on in the A.I. world, which hasn't slowed down over the past year, even as people are still discovering ChatGPT for the first time and reckoning with all of its implications.Tech journalists Kevin Roose and Casey Newton are hosts of the weekly podcast “Hard Fork.” Roose is my colleague at The Times, where he writes a tech column called “The Shift.” Newton is the founder and editor of Platformer, a newsletter about the intersection of technology and democracy. They've been closely tracking developments in the field since well before ChatGPT launched. I invited them on the show to catch up on the state of A.I.We discuss: who is — and isn't — integrating ChatGPT into their daily lives, the ripe market for A.I. social companions, why so many companies are hesitant to dive in, progress in the field of A.I. “interpretability” research, and America's “fecklessness” that cedes major A.I. benefits to the private sector, and much more.Recommendations:Electrifying America by David E.
