We're flies on the wall this week for 'Severance' on Apple TV+ as we watch seemingly every main character have some kind of on-screen meltdown as they try to get what's theirs.Ebube and Chinedu are back with AJ for a fun session of figuring out what the heck is wrong with everyone. They dive into Dylan's ring, Helly's eggs and Milchick's eloquence, as well as the show apparently having its very own Robert Baratheon all along. They also entertain Chinedu's borderline upsetting theories on Gemma, which Ebube might still be processing. So get a plate. The eggs are better raw.You can support us here.Subscribe to our Newsletter. Also available on YouTube.Hosts: Ebube Ubochi and Chinedu IhejiGuest: AJProduction by Ebube Ubochi

Get bonus episodes on Patreon! Sail across the Narrow Sea with us this week! Daenerys Targaryen introduces us to a whole new side of George R.R. Martin's world, and with her come new characters, new places, and new perspectives on prophecy. Echoes, of course, abound here: shades of the Stark children make their way into Dany's storyline (especially Jon), while the magical power and fated potential of a young girl remind us strongly of Sapkowski's Ciri in The Witcher series. Viserys' fierce entitlement strikes us (and the narrator) as pitifully weak, while Dany's motivations and desires align us unexpectedly with the Targaryens over Robert Baratheon. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children. She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. She banishes Jorah forever.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys' bodyguard and loyal advisor.Unsullied - Eunuch slave soldiers. Renowned for their fighting prowess. Barristan Selmy, aka Arstan Whitebeard- Former Lord Commander of the Kingsguard in King's Landing. Sent by Illyrio Mopatis to bring Dany to Pentos.Strong Belwas - Eunuch former slave, sent by Illyrio Mopatis to keep Dany safe. Daario Naharis - Leader of the sellsword company the Stormcrows.Meereen - Largest city on Slaver's Bay.We've got four new sustainer tiers on our Buy Me a Coffee site. In this episode, Mole's Town is attacked by wildlings, and everyone is killed except Gilly and her baby, who were spared by Ygritte. After being coached by Ramsey, Theon Greyjoy negotiated with the remaining ironborn at Moat Cailin and convinced them to bend the knee to spare their lives. After seeing Ramsey take Moat Cailin, Roose Bolton legitimized his bastard son Ramsay and gave him the Bolton name. Lil Finger got hemmed up by the Lords of the Vale following Lysa Arryn's death. Sansa showed she is learning to play the game by lying for Lil Finger to ensure her own safety. The Hound and Arya Stark arrived at the Eyrie, only to learn Arya'd aunt was dead. After being outed by Ser Barriston Selmy, Jorah Mormont admits to Dany that he spied on her for Robert Baratheon years earlier. She told him to pack his shit and that he is banished from Meereen. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Davos, with the aid of several co-conspirators, returns to his smuggling ways. When he comes clean to King Stannis and Melisandre they are really angry. Stannis prepares to take more than just a few fingers from Davos. However, Davos has what he hopes is an ace up his sleeve. Mackelly and Simon sure hope Davos knows what he's doing.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth, and several trustworthy king's men, enter Maester Pylos' chambers. They ask for Edric Storm, and the maester tells Edric to listen to the King's Hand. The men take Edric to a boat. The boy tries to be brave but it becomes clear he's nervous and uncertain. Davos persuades him to get on the boat and Edric's cousin Andrew Estermont and several other men accompany Edric.Davos makes his way to the Painted Table to wait for Stannis and confess his treachery. When Stannis and Melisandre arrive they are arguing about whether Joffrey Baratheon is indeed dead. Melisandre saw it in her flames, but Stannis doesn't trust the accuracy of the flames. Davos confirms Melisandre's story. He's been told that Joffrey died during his wedding feast. With that, Melisandre feels the case has been proven for her work with Edric's blood and asks for the rest of the boy to wake the stone dragons and win Stannis his throne.Davos explains why that's not possible. Stannis is extremely disappointed with his Hand. Davos explains that, as Hand, it is his job to help the king protect his people. Edric is one of the king's people. When Stannis draws Lightbringer, Davos explains that he's learned to read and begins to read a letter. He hopes it'll be enough to save his life.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight. Former Smuggler, Hand of the King to Stannis Baratheon.Stannis Baratheon - Lord of Dragonstone, rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms.Andrew Estermont - Cousin to Stannis and Edric.Melisandre - Red priestess of R'hllor. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Davos speaks the truth to king Stannis and is rewarded with his freedom and a promotion. Melisandre uses the blood (not all of it, thankfully) of Edric Storm to curse the false kings: Joffrey Baratheon, Balong Greyjoy, and Robb Stark. Mackelly and Simon hope that Robb's string of bad luck is behind him.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth is brought from the dungeons of Dragonstone by Axel Florent, the brother of his cellmate Alester. Florent shares that he has seen Stannis on the throne in the flames. But a precondition was that he, Axel, become Stannis' Hand of the King. If Davos supports Florent good things will follow, but woe betide Seaworth should he fail to.Stannis asks Davos what he thinks of Floernt's plan to invade Claw Isle as punishment for Lord Celtigar's decision to bend the knee to Joffrey. Davos, Stannis' spirit animal, cannot help himself and dismisses the plan as pointless and unfair. The men of Claw Isle fought and died for Stannis on the Blackwater, while victory would be assured, those people deserve better of their king. Stannis agrees, dismisses Florent and makes Davos his Hand of the King.Enter Melisandre with a plate of swollen leeches. The blood comes from Edric Storm, Robert's bastard son, who is already much beloved within Dragonstone. The three leeches go in the flames each with a curse for Joffrey Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight. Former Smuggler, now Hand of The King to Stannis Baratheon.Stannis Baratheon - Lord of Dragonstone, rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms.Melisandre - Red priestess of R'hllor. | Review | Game of Thrones is back, baby! Despite the profoundly terrible end to the original show, HBO has since invested a great deal of time and money into producing more stories from the mind of George R. R. Martin. House of the Dragon is the first of these to see the light of day. Set many generations before the Mad King was deposed by Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, this story recounts a bloody conflict within the once great Targaryen family that comes to embroil the whole continent in war.
We've reached it people. What we set out to do all those moons ago, we've finally done. We've made it to...the final season. Dreaded and critically maligned in the three years since its aired, Dom & Pat are aghast to discover that...it's not as bad as people may remember it. Now that's not to say that it doesn't have its fair share of flaws. The main concern seems to come down to Benioff & Weiss' decision to eliminate the Night King and the Army of the Dead at the halfway point rather than have the series conclude around them. This premiere episode sees Jon & Daenerys' combined armies arriving in Winterfell, meant to evoke how Robert Baratheon arrived in the series premiere, only for them to immediately be thrown into action when Bran warns them that the Army of the Dead has broken through the Wall. In King's Landing, Cersei greets the Golden Company and solidifies her alliance with Euron, while Theon rescues Yara before departing for Winterfell. It's a surprisingly solid premiere, and we cannot wait to break down the rest of this season for the final 6 episodes of #talkinthrones --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support
You know what time it is! The boys are back talking HoTD and its latest episode "The Second of His Name". A ton to unpack this week as we get closure to the war in the Stepstones. Viserys decides to rival Robert Baratheon with how much wine he can drink in an episode, and we discuss prophecy of who should be the rightful heir to the kingdoms. Davos gets back to Dragonstone where Salladhor Saan tries to dissuade him from attempting to murder Melisandre. Davos is determined, but is arrested before he even gets close. Simon and Mackelly apply the aloe.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth returns to a much changed Dragonstone. The harbor is only sparsely populated with Lysene ships and there are very few people around. He meets with old friend Salladhor Saan, who fills him in on the news. King Stannis and Melisandre spend all their time together staring into the flames of the volcano. Queen Selyse and her uncle Alester have taken over the day-to-day running of the diminished kingdom. Their zeal for the religion of R'Hellor has now seen them burning alive those who don't follow it, or them.Saan confirms that Davos' son Devan was saved and is in Dragonstone. The Lyseni suggests that Davos return to the seas. He has a ship he could captain, and the new laws allow for them to intercept, board, and pillage almost any ships in the bay. It'll be fun. Like old times. Maybe go visit Mrs. Seaworth at Cape Wrath? Davos is having none of it. He was saved from death by the Mother. And the Mother has only one mission for him: kill the red priestess who brought down all this misfortune upon them.He goes to the castle, where he is happy to see Shireen, puzzled by Patchface's prophetic babbling, and meets Edric Storm, Robert's bastard son, who proves to be a decent lad. Before Davos can get any further, Axell Florent and armed guards arrest him and send him to the dungeons for attempting to assassinate "their lady." And the Hound refuses to return to the fighting outside the walls. In the end, Tyrion leads the sortie to defend the King's Gate himself. Simon and Mackelly tremulously reach for their helmets. Chapter ReviewTyrion Lannister watches from the city walls, as chaos and fire reign on the river below. The wildfire did what he'd hoped it would do, almost. The vast majority of Stannis' fleet has been destroyed, but there's still enough ships left to get him and his men across the river. In fact, some men have already reached the north shore. He plans to turn the three huge trebuchets west and continue raining boulders on the remaining ships. However, King Joffrey has a different plan. He wants to launch the traitors known as the Antler Men instead. After the king leaves to play with his new toys, word reaches Tyrion that there are enemies at the King's Gate with a battering ram. When Tyrion arrives at the gate, he finds the Hound unwilling to lead the men back out to defend it. Tyrion tries to command him to do so, but to no affect. With no other choice, he saddles up to lead the men himself. At first, few follow. He's reminds them that they say he's half a man, so what does that make them? Davos sails into Blackwater Bay with Stannis' giant fleet. He has some misgivings, but initially the battle goes to plan. However, a series of barges full of wildfire sail into the fleet and all is lost. Davos is thrown overboard but is being drawn into the burning mess that is gathering on Tyrion's great chain. Simon and Mackelly pick through the flotsam.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth stands on the deck of the Black Betha, in the second row of King Stannis Baratheon's fleet. The enormous fleet is made up of 10 rows of 20 ships, not including the ships of Salladhor Saan's Lysene fleet that will stay out in the Blackwater Bay as the rear guard.Ser Imry Florent, brother to Stannis's wife Selyse, has been named Lord High Captain of the fleet. He plans to use the fleet's superior numbers to overwhelm the much smaller royal fleet. Once they've been dispatched, the ships will both land troops on the northern bank of the Blackwater Rush and ferry Stannis and his army across from the southern bank. Ser Davos has reservations about the plan, most notably the decision to take all 200 ships into the river at once. When the two sides meet, the fighting is fierce. However, it's clear that the numbers of Stannis' fleet will carry the day for them. Everything changes when boats ladened with wildfire are drifted into the fleet. As they are rammed or catch fire, the explosions are immense. When the first boat explodes, Davos is thrown from his ship. As he treads water, he sees many other ships engulfed in green flames. Davos figures he'll let the river current take him out to the bay to meet up with Saan's fleet for rescue. But as he looks down-river, he sees that a thick boom chain has been raised across the mouth of the river, trapping them all. The current is taking him right for it and the burning husks that have been trapped against it.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Ser Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion sees two new Kingsguard appointed and oversees preparations for Stannis' arrival. The pyromancers have more than delivered on their wildfire promise. And Varys has foiled a plot to open the gates to Stannis. Mackelly and Simon dip a finger in the boiling oil. Chapter Review:Tyrion sends Shagga and the other mountain clansmen to the Kingswood to harry and delay Stannis' army as it finally makes its way to King's Landing. Tyrion and Bronn review the defenses on the river-side of the city and decree that the homes and shanties that lean against the outside of the wall, need to be removed (with minimal human misery if possible) before the invaders use them to scale the walls. Tyrion has learned that Winterfell has fallen to the Greyjoys and while celebrating the Starks' misfortune, he cannot help but feel that there is something not right about it. He ponders this while seeing Balon Swann and Osmund Kettleblack sworn in as the latest members of the Kingsguard. They replace the late Preston Greenfield and the disgraced Boros Blount, who capitulated too willingly when Tyrion's men forcibly wrested Prince Tommen from his care.Tyrion meets with Hallyne of the pyromancers who is miles ahead of schedule on the production of wildfire. Tyrion is skeptical, but Hallyne explains that their spells are working like they used to in the time of dragons. Tyrion faces complaints from ships' captains who've had their ships impounded in defense of the capital. He meets with Varys who has unearthed a plot to open the gates to Stannis' army. Not from the starving hordes, but from middle-class King's Landians who'd rather see the back of the Lannisters. One of them is a master armorer, who fell out with Tyrion over his great chain scheme. Odds and Ends: We're feeling the holiday spirit this week, because T.J. forced everyone to do a secret Santa gift exchange, and an item is added to the display; Daegan rewatched a childhood favorite and didn't like the experience; we dive in to the lost art of tv to tape recording, and various other VHS tales from our youths Feature Film: We talk the very logical Jack Frost from 1998, NOT the equally logical Jack Frost from 1997. In it, Robert Baratheon basically kills Michael Keaton so he can slip in on John Travolta's wife and not care about Charlie Boy. Michael Keaton foils his plans by returning as a snowman so he can teach his son how to snowboard and J-Shot Jack Cheese his way to being kind of okay at hockey, before fucking back off to hell. Davos has rejoined his king, but admires the implacable Cortnay Penrose a lot more than Stannis' new supporters. Davos smuggles Melisandre beneath the walls of Storm's End where she gives birth to a shadow in Stannis' form. Simon and Mackelly pick over the afterbirth. Chapter Review: Ser Cortnay parlays with Stannis and supporters beneath the walls of Storm's End. He refuses to yield the castle while one of the conditions is handing over Edric Storm. Stannis' new bannermen try to reassure Penrose, but the old knight throws scorn on their trustworthiness. Ser Cortnay offers single combat to settle matters without a siege, but Stannis demurs. Davos rides back with Stannis who confides that forgiving the lords that followed Renly sticks in his craw. Davos advises the king to forget Storm's End and focus on King's Landing. But Stannis is confident that Ser Cortnay dies tonight and the castle, and his bastard nephew, will be his. To that end, Davos recreates his fabled onion-run when he saved Stannis and the denizens of Storm's End from salvation. This time, he brings not food, but Melisandre. She may also cause tears. En route, they discuss good and evil and the grey areas in between. When they arrive beneath the walls, the way is blocked by a portcullis, but they're close enough. Meslisandre reveals that she is very pregnant and immediately gives birth to a shadow the size and shape of Stannis Baratheon. Davos wonders what he's done. Daenerys and her khalasar arrive at Qarth. Various factions vie for her favor. Ser Jorah brings news from Westeros that King Robert is dead, his son Joffrey sits the throne, and the usurper's allies the Starks and Lannisters are at war. Dany is thrilled but Jorah cautions that nothing has really changed. Simon and Mackelly rehash the old news. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen and her crew enter Qarth. It is awash with colors and life, everything that Vaes Tolorro was not. Dany displays her dragons as she is paraded through the city led by Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The citizens are naturally amazed. The two men make bids for her affection by undermining the other, Dany ultimately choosing Daxos' offer of a whole wing of his giant manse. The masked woman Quaithe warns Dany to beware all of them. Jorah concurs. While Dany gets a bath, her men visit the rest of the city - she wants to know about the parts that her parade route did not enter. Ser Jorah is sent to the docks to find any news from Westeros. While she bathes, she tries to come up with a plausible route for her back to the Iron Throne. Her enemies, Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, Tywin Lannister and Jamie Lannister loom large in her imagination, and her vulnerable position is obvious to all. Jorah returns with Captain Quhuru Mo of the Summer Isles. He has reliable, although not detailed intelligence, that Robert Baratheon is dead. That Ned Stark has been labeled a traitor and that Westeros is at war with itself over the line of succession. She's delighted and promises the captain a handsome reward when he visits her in King's Landing and she sits the Iron Throne. Later Jorah counsels her to not broadcast her intentions, but she wants the world to know she's coming. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Daenerys Targaryen - Daughter of King Aerys. Widow of Khal Drogo. Mother of dragons. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Khaleesi of a small khalasar in Essos. Ser Jorah Mormont - Banished Lord of Bear Island. Advisor to Daenerys Targaryen. The North sends its demands to King's Landing, knowing full well they won't be accepted. News arrives of various setbacks. Cat determines to solicit help from King Renly Baratheon. Mackelly and Simon consider what Robb's next move should be. Chapter Review: Robb reads his demands of Cersei to her cousin Cleos Frey. He's to take them to her and return with her reply. They include the return of all prisoners, delivery of 10 highborn Lannisters as hostages, concession that the North and the Riverlands are now their own kingdom. In return, all the prisoners taken by the north will be freed, with one golden exception: Jamie. Bereaved Rickard Karstark doesn't even stick around to listen. Cat tells Robb that he did well, but things aren't going great. The Riverlands lords are dispersing to defend their homes against Tywin's raiding parties. The main army is camped at Riverrun with no clear idea of a next step. Clamor is rising for an attack on Harrenhal, but that will cost lives and won't be easy. Robb wants Cat to go home to Bran and Rickon. She says she wants to stay with her father. Later with her uncle Brynden, Cat learns that the Lannisters are building a new army in the West, which threatens to trap Robb in a pincer. They decide that the best way forward is to lure Tywin out of Harrenhal, but he's no Edmure. The only way to make that happen would be to create a new threat that he couldn't ignore. Cat determines to travel south and beseech King Renly to come into the theatre and draw Tywin into action. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Crowned King in the North after his victory at Riverrun. Grey Wind - The direwolf of Robb Stark. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Cat and company arrive in Riverrun to find Lord Hoster Tully on his deathbed. With both Baratheon brothers vying to take the throne from their nephew, the Northern lords don't know who to support. The Greatjohn Umber has a creative solution, and declares Robb the King in the North to general approval. The boys dip their lances and consider bending the knee. Chapter Review: Catelyn re-enters Riverrun, where she grew up, for the first time in years. She's escorted to her father's rooms by her brother Edmure, recently freed from captivity in Jamie Lannister's host. Lord Hoster is near death but is glad to receive Cat. He's less thrilled to hear that his brother has come home. The old guy still has smouldering animosity for Brynden, and a fondness for his first grandson Robb. Cat finds Robb praying with the northern lords in the Godswood, where she played as a child. He's too busy to see his grandpa, as news has arrived that Renly Baratheon has wed Margery Tyrell and claimed the Iron Throne. With Tywin Lannister retreating to Harrenhal, the path forward for the northern army is not clear. Stannis has the better claim, but Renly has more (i.e., some) charisma. When it feels like the discussion is going, nowhere the GreatJohn Umber rises and dismisses all these southern kings, they mean nothing to him. The only king he'd follow is Robb Stark: the King in the North. All agree. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Hoster Tully - Lord of Riverrun. Brynden “Blackfish” Tully - Brother of Hoster Tully, uncle to Catelyn Stark. Formerly Knight of the Gate in the Vale. Theon Greyjoy - Ward and hostage of Eddard Stark. Only surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, and heir to the Iron Islands. Lord John “The Greatjohn” Umber - Lord of Last Hearth - huge. Lost two fingers to Grey Wind, now fiercely loyal to Robb Stark. Jamie Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Nicknamed the "Kingslayer" for killing King Aerys Targaryen. Stannis Baratheon - Eldest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. At Dragonstone. Renly Baratheon - Youngest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. Sansa tries to come to terms with her reality. King Joffrey reveals that they are still to be married, that his name-day is coming up, and that his cruelty doesn't end with just killing her father. Meryn Trant puts on the hurt and Sandor Clegane is uncommonly solicitous. The guys dab the blood from Sansa's cheek and help to plot our revenge. Chapter Review: Sansa is unwashed and ignored in her chambers in King's Landing. She's not eating and bouncing between awful dreams of her father's death and the awful reality of it. She feels utterly betrayed having kept her side of every bargain. Joffrey tells her to get up and Meryn Trant gives her something to cry about. She steels her resolve and attends Joffrey at court. He's his usual self. Bored and inconsiderate punctuated by bouts of being engaged but vile. After he takes his leave, he demands Sansa join him. The Hound encourages her compliance - but kind of nicely. Joffrey's outing is to see the heads on spikes, including Ned and Septa Mordane. He knows how to show a girl a good time. Sansa gives Joffrey some sass and Meryn Trant beats her bloody again. Sansa toys with the notion of pushing Joffrey off the battlements, but as her thought crystallizes into action Clegane interposes and gently dabs the blood from her lips. She thanks him and a weird alliance is cemented. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. Dany annoys some of the khalasar by rescuing new slaves from rape and murder. Khal Drogo hurt in the raid that won the slaves, backs her up. One of the women Dany saved is a healer and she agrees to patch up the wounded Khal. Mackelly and Simon cast an expert eye over the stitchwork. Chapter Review: Khal Drogo's khalasar stumbles across Khal Ogo and crew attacking a town of sheep-farmers. The peaceful Lhazareen are thrilled when Drogo's forces attack and destroy the rival Dothraki. However, their relief is short-lived: Drogo's men finish the job off and destroy the village killing or enslaving everyone. The warriors set about systematic rape and pillage. Dany, against advice, rescues several women from their plight. This causes dissent in the ranks, but Khal Drogo cannot help but take her side. He's picked up a few wounds and she wants him to call for a medic. They have their hands full, but one of Dany's entourage of new slaves (Mirri Maz Duur) offers to help. Drogo's blood riders have misgivings. A female healer is obviously a witch of some sort. But Dany thinks she can trust her. Drogo grits his teeth as hot wine is applied and sutures are inserted. Qotho warns Mirri that her life depends on the Khal's uneventful recovery. Dany is impressed by the bedside manner (of Mirri, not Qotho) and asks her to be midwife at Rhaego's birth. Jon gets a pardon and a shiny new sword from Jeor Mormont. His buddies are all excited but Jon is preoccupied with news from the south. Maester Aemon sympathizes and reveals a shocker. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch. Chapter Review: Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he's nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear. Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King's Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers' trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father. Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Jon doesn't think Aemon understands, but the maester reveals that he is Aemon Targaryen so, yeah, he's had a few family setbacks that he has had to endure in his time at the wall. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Currently languishing in a King's Landing cell for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Instead of returning to Winterfell, Cat joined her first-born Robb, at Moat Cailin, as he prepared for war with the Lannisters. Showing major restraint, rather than hug him, hold him, and scold him for riding off to war, she helps him devise a battle strategy. Simon and Mac take you through the battle plans and examine what the lords of the North are up against. Chapter Review: When Catelyn Stark, Ser Rodrik Cassel, and Ser Brynden "Blackfish" Tully, reach White Harbor, after leaving the Vale, they learn that Cat's son Robb Stark and his lords bannermen are at Moat Cailin with a large army. Cat decides that she should go to him, rather than return to Winterfell and her two younger sons. Upon arriving at Moat Cailin, she informs the lords that she has lost Tyrion Lannister as a hostage, much to the dismay of the men. She then boots the men from the room and has some one-on-one time with her son. When the two are alone, Robb turns into a 15-year-old boy looking to his mother for help. She tells him that the Knights of the Vale aren't coming to assist them, so he needs to figure out a plan with what he's got. Robb decides to bait Tywin Lannister's army with his foot soldiers, drawing them north, away from the southern crossing of the Green Fork of the Trident. Meanwhile, he and his mounted soldiers will sneak down the west bank to Riverrun and aid Edmure Tully in the fight against Jamie Lannister's army. Sansa is in the clutches of the Lannisters. She only wants to marry Joffrey. They only want her to write to her family demanding their fealty. If she can do that, her dreams might come true. Mac and Simon weigh Sansa's decisions and prospects. Chapter Review: Sansa and Jeyne Poole are confined to apartments in Maegor's Holdfast. Jeyne can't stop crying, having witnessed the butchery that the Lannisters visited on the Starks. Sansa missed all that, because instead of packing for the journey home, she went and told the queen her dad's plans and was incarcerated for "her safety." Sansa is presented to the queen and the small council. All agree that she is not really future queenly material any more in light of her father's treason. She tries to defend him, but upon discovering that they might still allow her wedding to happen, she soon forgets his plight. Cersei determines that Jeyne is a bad influence, what with her eye-witnessing and all, so she's to be rehoused by Petyr Baelish.Sansa just needs to write to brother Robb, mother Cat, Grandfather Hoster Tully, and Aunt Lysa Arryn telling them all to come down to King's Landing and bend the knee to their new king, and she'll back in the good books. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
King Robert has been mortally wounded by a boar. Ned's plan to tell him that his children were cuckoos turns to ashes in his mouth. Cersei, Renly, Varys, Petry Baelish - all start scheming for the next round of the Game of Thrones. Is Ned morally nimble enough to keep up? Mac and Simon mourn the fallen king and consider every angle of the implications. Chapter Review: Thanks to a surfeit of wine from his loyal squire Lancel Lannister, King Robert gets gored by a boar and the two-day journey back to King's Landing has allowed the wound to mortify. There is nothing Pycelle can do. Ned transcribes the King's last will and testament, with a slight edit, for the good of the realm. Cersei departs to...who knows? Selmy blames himself. Varys blames Lancel. Renly suggests to Ned that they take Joffrey into custody to ensure adherence to the terms of Ned's will: namely that Ned act as regent and projector of the realm until Joffrey comes of age. Ned writes to Stannis congratulating him on becoming king. Littlefinger paints a grim picture of the realm under Stannis, who doesn't command the love that Robert did nor demonstrates the level of forgiveness and flexibility that a king will need. Ned is set on his path. Baelish agrees to help but he'll need money to pay off the gold cloaks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend.King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Daenerys and Khal Drogo go for their second trimester gender-reveal with the Dosh Khaleen. A snack of raw horse's heart, sex in public, and a celebratory feast - all in a typical day for a hard-working Khaleesi. The portents are what the happy couple were looking for: a boy, strong, healthy, oh, and the long-prophesied Khal who will bring all the people of the world into one great Khalasar...so that'll be nice. Mac and Simon pay homage. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen visits the Dosh Khaleen and manages to chow down an entire raw horse's heart. That is the ultimate test, and elicits a positive reaction from the old crones. The unborn child will be the Stallion who Mounts the World. Prophecy said that he'd arrive eventually to unite all people into one giant Khalasar (but then, who would they plunder from?) After a bath and a bit of hanky-panky, a feast is thrown. It's all fun and games until Dany's brother Viserys arrives and really rains on the whole parade. He's drunk and feels that he's owed the Iron Throne. Viserys gets belligerent. Threatens to cut Dany' baby out there and then. Khal Drogo relents. Viserys will have his golden crown. The bloodriders hold him down as Dany watches on, while Drogo dumps molten gold on her brother's head. Dany observes that he cannot have been a true dragon, because fire wouldn't have killed him. Eddard Stark is now in possession of the biggest secret in King's Landing. News so immense it could destroy the very kingdom. But the king is off hunting and Ned has few friends with whom to share the news. What to do? Personally we wouldn't have advised confiding in Cersei Bloomin' Lannister, but then again we're morally flexible soft southern children of summer. From their respective castles, Mac and Simon analyze the latest happenings and weigh up the latest battle between Ned's honor and common sense. Chapter Review: Ned entertains some of his Small Council cohorts - Grand Maester Pycelle and Petyr LittleFinger Baelish. Apparently, Tywin Lannister doesn't appreciate having his bannerman, Ser Gregor Clegane brought to heel. Ned's past caring about Tywin. But he does still care about Cersei's children. They parley in the infrequently- used King's Landing Godswood. It goes about as well as might be expected. She admits to everything (even providing the identity of the father), but she does not admit to Jon Arryn's murder. Cersei tries to use her feminine wiles - but come on - this is Lord Eddard Stark. Ned advises her to gather her children and flee... far. Robert's wrath will follow her as far as she could possibly run. Cersei tells Ned he missed the chance to seize the throne for himself. And follows up with, "In the Game of Thrones you win, or you die." Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Grand Maester Pycelle - Elderly grand maester of the Seven Kingdoms. Tyrion and Bronn find themselves in a tough spot. Stuck on the High Road with nothing between them and the dangerous mountain clans. But, like always, Tyrion has a plan. It's no doubt a gamble and their lives are the stakes. Simon and Mac discuss the ins and outs of Tyrion's gambles thus far, contemplate missed opportunities, and conjecture about Tyrion's retribution plans for Lysa Arryn. Chapter Review: Bronn might have won Tyrion Lannister his freedom in the trial by combat but they're both far from safe. Now they're stuck on the High Road with no protection but Bronn's sword and Tyrion's mouth. It's the latter that Tyrion plans on using to save them. While they rest, Tyrion tells Bronn of the logic behind his gamble with the trial by combat. He also knows that Bronn will sell him out, like he did to Cat, as soon as the right offer is made. Tyrion tells Bronn that he was once married. However, when Tyrion's father Tywin found out, things did not end well. Eventually, the mountain clansmen find them but before they can kill Bronn and take Tyrion captive, he makes them an offer they can't refuse. All the steel weapons they want from his lord father, and on top of that the Vale of Arryn. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bronn and Ser Vardis are ready to rumble, and Tyrion's fate hangs in the balance. The pair take very different approaches to preparing for the duel. Ser Vardis loads himself down with armor like a tank, while Bronn prefers to stay quick and agile. Which method will win out? The guys will tell you all about that and so many other happenings in the chapter. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark gets word that Jamie Lannister is amassing troops at Casterly Rock and that her brother Edmure is doing the same along the border between the Westerlands and the Riverlands. Cat offers him the swords, if he comes with her to Winterfell. Cat then joins Lysa to watch the duel between, to determine Tyrion's fate. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion is having trouble getting comfortable in his new room in the Eyrie. Mostly it's the lack of a fourth wall, the 600-foot drop just feet away from him, and the rough treatment from the jailer. He takes a big gamble on plan to get himself out, but at least the first part pays off when Bronn volunteers to champion him in a trial by combat.Chapter Review:Tyrion's sarcasm and threats to Lysa Arryn have landed him in a sky cell of the Eyrie. As the days drag on, he's starting to wonder if they're planning on letting him die down there. We learn that Lysa has added the accusation that Tyrion killed Jon Arryn to that of Cat's accusation that he tried to have Bran killed. With nothing but time to think, he wonders if his siblings were actually involved in either the plot to kill Bran or the death of Jon Arryn. He also thinks that possibly a third party could have been involved, as the plots were so very different in sophistication. When Tyrion realizes he can't last much longer in his cell, due to the cruel treatment from his jailer, he bribes the jailer to tell Lysa he's ready to confess his sins. During his audience with Lysa, Cat, and many of the lords of the Vale, it becomes clear his decision to confess was just a ruse to get in front of a large audience. He requests a trial by combat. For a long minute he thinks he's mad a terrible mistake, until Bronn steps forward to be his champion. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Catelyn Stark and her entourage finally arrive, battered and beaten, at the Vale. Cat meets some family. One is a positive reunion. The other not so much. We tell you all about it, give you some insights, and ponder if Rickon might be better suited to look after Robert than Lysa.
