They began as King's men on a mission - what seemed a clear cut case of heroes vs. villains. Even after the death of King Robert, the Brotherhood Without Banners remained a model of honor and duty, serving the common folk instead. But time and deprivation wore on them, and they slowly lost their sense of purpose, justice… and their humanity. Quite literally in 2 cases. This is their tragic, surprisingly supernatural story from Beric to Stoneheart, with theories on what's to come for this outlaw band captained by the undead and guided by prophecy.Rize: https://rize.io/?via=WESTEROS & code WESTEROS3 - 25% off on all payments within first 3 months!Steven Attewell - racefortheironthrone.wordpress.comBonus Eps & More - www.patreon.com/historyofwesterosShirts & Stickers - historyofwesteros.threadless.comwww.historyofwesteros.comIntro/Maps - https://klaradox.deFacebook Group - https://bit.ly/howfbDiscord - https://bit.ly/howdiscordNina - goodqueenaly.tumblr.com/
This week Pastor Robert presents the case from the book of Matthew that Jesus really is the King sent by God. We will see Matthew call prophets from the Old Testament to the stand as he proves Jesus as the rightful King, the Messiah sent to save the world from sin.

What sets apart these two failed conquerors who died without an heir? We build to a broader discussion of what defines a character in this series – their memorable deaths or their fateful decisions? Maggie deepens the analysis with a discussion on Ned's haunted dreams and the many ‘promises' weighing him down. We close with the next phase of our ‘Prince That Was Promised' theory crafting. Get bonus episodes on Patreon! This chapter sits at squarely the dramatic intersection of philosophy and politics. Cam chases down George R. R. Martin's shockingly unvarnished critique of power. As a thought experiment, we call King Robert's bluff and imagine how the series would have ended if this plot against Daenerys Targaryen had been successful. Cam steps out of his comfort zone and into Maggie's, and we try to compose a Renaissance-esque painting of this chapter's heroic deconstruction. Maggie examines Robert's and Ned's relationship through the lens of control and choices, and aims to understand the point at which Ned's failure becomes inevitable. While Elizabeth I might have truly loved her favorite, the reality was she could not marry him. Marrying Robert would have isolated England even further as we will see. We hear an excerpt where Cammy is telling Mark the story of Fiona, the 'world's loneliest sheep'.Killiechassie Burial Ground near Aberfeldy holds just six graves, five of which are covered over with recumbent flat slabs. For years, it was allowed to become neglected but in the 1990s, the Breadalbane Heritage Society started to take an interest and discovered that it not only dates back hundreds of years but also has connections to King Robert the Bruce and the Wolf of Badenoch. Jon is summoned by King Stannis. The king offers Jon his dream come true; the title of Lord Stark of Winterfell. Stannis also plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, if they bend the knee. Jon agrees with the wildling plan but needs time to think about being legitimized and made lord of Winterfell. Simon and Mackelly consider shopping for castle-warming gifts.Chapter Review:Jon Snow spars in the yard of Castle Black with Satin. Melisandre interrupts; King Stannis wants a word with Jon. Stannis tells Jon he's heard much about him. Jon confirms some facts and dispels some rumors. The bottom line is that he never turned his cloak. The king believes him. Stannis knows Janos Slynt and knew Ned Stark. Stannis reveals that he plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, as long as they bend the knee and take R'hllor as their true god. The king explains that he's here to fight the true enemy: the Great Other. They will need the wildling's help in that fight.Stannis then tells Jon the primary reason he sent for him. The king doesn't need another sword in the Night's Watch. He needs the North. There's no better way to rally the North than through a son of Eddard Stark. He plans to legitimize Jon, making him Jon Stark the Lord of Winterfell. It was a dream of Jon's when he was young, but he never wanted harm to come to his siblings. However, he's likely the last of them alive. But there's another issue: he's taken The Black. Melisandre says his vow is meaningless, since it wasn't said to R'hellor. The final detail of the plan is that Stannis wants to marry Jon to the wildling Val. Jon asks for time to consider the offer.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Arya and company ride into Stoney Sept. She finds some of her own kind and puts them out of their misery. She uses the powers of deduction to determine what's unique about the inn she's spending the night in. The next morning her prayers are mysteriously answered by the arrival of a Lannister prisoner. Mackelly and Simon light a candle to the Father.Chapter Review:Arya Stark, Gendry, and their companions from the Brotherhood Without Banners find themselves in the town of Stoney Sept, on their hunt for Beric Dondarion and Thoros of Myr. The town is run by a man called the Mad Huntsman. The huntsman has taken to torturing those who run afoul of the law. Currently, several northmen are dead or dying in crow cages in the town square. Arya, feeling a kinship to the men, gives each some water before Anguy puts an arrow through them. The group then stops at an inn called The Peach, where they're treated (some reluctantly) to baths, fresh clothes, food, and entertainment. Arya, observing the scene in the common room, realizes it's no ordinary inn. The Peach is a brothel. She meets a girl who claims to be the daughter of King Robert. Arya also meets an old man who wants to get to know her better. He's run off by Gendry, but Arya accidentally offends Gendry and he sends her to her room. The next morning the group is awoken by the barking of many dogs. The Mad Huntsman has returned with a Lannister prisoner. Gendry wonders if it's Jamie. However, when Arya sees the man's face, she knows it's not the Kingslayer. So far through the first four episodes Cat and Ned have truly shown us how they both are dumb AF. They truly had no business leaving the North....them slow country folk should not have been in the big city. And episodes 5 and 6 are truly no different. Once again we see more mistakes made by Ned, ESPECIALLY in his interaction with Jamie in front of the brothel as well as his talks with King Robert....Ned really isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Now, I do give Cat credit for taking Tyrion to the Eyrie instead of Winterfell, but that's about it. Speaking of the Eyrie, we got to met Cats weird ass sister and her weird ass son. And we also got to see what Bronn is about. I know Tyrion appreciated him. Back in King's Landing, Robert is having his hands full trying to run his shit, but he is having his hands full with the Starks and the Lannisters beefing real heavy. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Speaking of which, weak ass Viserys fucked around until he found out, how heavy the crown can really be...Tune in this week to talk all about it as only we can...So good to be back, rewatching these Thrones. Arya and Gendry are not taken to Riverrun, rather they are escorted south to meet with Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr. En route Arya tries to escape, but Harwin - a Stark bannerman, no less - chases her and captures her. Oh perfidy! Mackelly and Simon discuss the origin story of the Brotherhood Without Banners.Chapter Review:Hot Pie has elected to stay and become head baker at the Inn of the Kneeling Man. Arya Stark and Gendry are headed to Riverrun. Only, they're headed in the wrong direction. Arya is sure. She's accompanied by Harwin, amongst others, so she hears how things have been for him since he left King's Landing. Not all rainbows and unicorns. The Mountain lay in wait for them at the Mummer's Ford and decimated two thirds of Dondarrion's force. Beric himself was gravely wounded but was nursed back to health by Thoros of Myr. The latter is a priest of R'Hellor, and seems to use the power for slightly nicer things than his compadre Melisandre does. The Brotherhood Without Banners, as they term themselves, has decided to stay in the field, not to fight for either side, but to protect the smallfolk from the armies that abuse them. They do this in the name of King Robert. Arya tries to escape, but Harwin's father was the master of horse, so he catches her. His loyalty is to Beric, Thoros, and his new brothers. Joseph and Michael talk about the seventh episode of Game of Thrones: You Win or You Die. In this episode they discuss Cersei's famous line "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." Is it accurate? They also discuss King Robert's will and how a king's will has been handled historically, the brutality of Khal Drogo and the Dothraki, and how Ned chose war over peace in the name of justice. That and much more in this episode of Back into Thrones.

Sansa overhears disquieting news of the battle, has a run-in with Sandor Clegane, and learns from an elated Ser Dontos Hollard that the battle has turned as reinforcements have arrived from the east in the form of the Tyrells, Tywin Lannister, and somehow Renly Baratheon. Simon and Mackelly mourn the missed opportunities.Chapter Review:Lancel Lannister brings news of the battle. Things are not going well. As the king was pulled back to safety, the men lost heart and threw down their arms. There are enemy forces at multiple gates, Tyrion is likely dead, and the defenders are outmatched. Cersei Lannister takes all this as evidence that Joffrey should be further withdrawn. Lancel objects but Cersei insists, smacks him in a wound in his side, and storms out.Sansa tries to reassure the frightened ladies, but then uses the opportunity to go to her chamber. Figuring some distance between herself and Ser Ilyn Payne is prudent. There she finds the Hound waiting for her. He offers to rescue her and take her north, but she'd rather take her chances here. He leaves. She takes a well-earned nap. She's awoken some time later by Ser Dontos who is cock-a-hoop with joy, but barely coherent. When she calms him down enough, it transpires that Stannis' forces have been routed by an army comprising Tywin's force from the West, and the combined forces of the Reach apparently (and puzzlingly) led by Renly.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Davos has rejoined his king, but admires the implacable Cortnay Penrose a lot more than Stannis' new supporters. Davos smuggles Melisandre beneath the walls of Storm's End where she gives birth to a shadow in Stannis' form. Simon and Mackelly pick over the afterbirth. Chapter Review: Ser Cortnay parlays with Stannis and supporters beneath the walls of Storm's End. He refuses to yield the castle while one of the conditions is handing over Edric Storm. Stannis' new bannermen try to reassure Penrose, but the old knight throws scorn on their trustworthiness. Ser Cortnay offers single combat to settle matters without a siege, but Stannis demurs. Davos rides back with Stannis who confides that forgiving the lords that followed Renly sticks in his craw. Davos advises the king to forget Storm's End and focus on King's Landing. But Stannis is confident that Ser Cortnay dies tonight and the castle, and his bastard nephew, will be his. To that end, Davos recreates his fabled onion-run when he saved Stannis and the denizens of Storm's End from salvation. This time, he brings not food, but Melisandre. She may also cause tears. En route, they discuss good and evil and the grey areas in between. When they arrive beneath the walls, the way is blocked by a portcullis, but they're close enough. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion receives a command from Cersei that Pycelle is to be released. Tyrion agrees but while he's at it he turns the messenger (cousin Lancel) to team-Tyrion. Later he visits Shae and admits to himself that he loves his life and Shae. Simon and Mackelly get a little sappy over the romance. Chapter Review: Lancel Lannister visits Tyrion Lannister after midnight. Tyrion's not asleep but pretends to have been. Lancel is your typical high-born, good-looking, recently knighted 16-year-old. He treats Tyrion with disdain, referring to him as imp. Cersei wants Grand Maester Pycelle released and Commander of the Gold Cloaks Jacelyn Bywater arrested (presumably for not releasing Pycelle on her command). Tyrion is pleased about that. Tyrion turns the tables on Lancel when he accuses him of killing the king to bed the queen, and won't Joffrey be interested to learn this news. Lancel crumbles in an instant. Tyrion reels him - he could keep this from the new king if Lancel were to report all of Cersei's comings and goings to Tyrion. Lancel agrees. Tyrion fears for the lad. Cersei would certainly kill him if this betrayal were to reach her ears, and should he live long enough to see his cousin Jamie again, well, he'd kill him too. Tyrion visits Shae. He realizes that the pain of Tysha's betrayal is finally behind him. He's in love with Shae and with his life as Hand of the King. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys and her khalasar arrive at Qarth. Various factions vie for her favor. Ser Jorah brings news from Westeros that King Robert is dead, his son Joffrey sits the throne, and the usurper's allies the Starks and Lannisters are at war. Dany is thrilled but Jorah cautions that nothing has really changed. Simon and Mackelly rehash the old news. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen and her crew enter Qarth. It is awash with colors and life, everything that Vaes Tolorro was not. Dany displays her dragons as she is paraded through the city led by Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The citizens are naturally amazed. The two men make bids for her affection by undermining the other, Dany ultimately choosing Daxos' offer of a whole wing of his giant manse. The masked woman Quaithe warns Dany to beware all of them. Jorah concurs. While Dany gets a bath, her men visit the rest of the city - she wants to know about the parts that her parade route did not enter. Ser Jorah is sent to the docks to find any news from Westeros. While she bathes, she tries to come up with a plausible route for her back to the Iron Throne. Her enemies, Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, Tywin Lannister and Jamie Lannister loom large in her imagination, and her vulnerable position is obvious to all. Jorah returns with Captain Quhuru Mo of the Summer Isles. He has reliable, although not detailed intelligence, that Robert Baratheon is dead. That Ned Stark has been labeled a traitor and that Westeros is at war with itself over the line of succession. She's delighted and promises the captain a handsome reward when he visits her in King's Landing and she sits the Iron Throne. The Small Council discusses an appropriate response to Stannis' widely publicized accusation of Cersei's children being Jamie's. Later Tyrion employs all the blacksmiths in King's Landing to make him a monstrous chain. Later still, Tyrion publicly enters a brothel before sneaking out through a secret door to visit Shae in private. Mackelly and Simon debate the levels of cunning on display. Chapter Review:Stannis Baratheon has been sending word of Cersei and Jamie Lannister's incest to every house, great and small, in the realm. The Small Council discusses a response. Cersei wants to quash it completely, in particular so that neither her father nor her children ever hear of it. Wiser heads point out that trying to silence such a rumor tends to indicate a guilty conscience. Littlefinger comes up with the winning idea. They will circulate their own salacious accusation against Stannis: that his daughter Shireen is in fact the child of Patchface the fool. Tyrion Lannister and Bronn meet with the armorers and smiths of King's Landing and commission an almighty chain. Some are worried about their prior commission (from Cersei) to equip the Gold Cloaks, but Tyrion assures them that his project takes priority and he'll protect them from the Queen. Tyrion visit's Chataya's brothel. He makes no attempt to hide. But once inside he exits through a secret tunnel, built by a former Hand of the King, and meets Lord Varys in a stable. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
On Dragonstone, Davos watches Melisandre burn the gods of The Seven. He has a drink with pirate Salladhor Saan. He meets with King Stannis and is commissioned to go spread the word of Stannis' rightful claim to the people of Westeros. Simon and Mackelly consider converting. Chapter Review: Melisandre reveals the prophecy of Azor Ahai and his flaming sword Lighhtbringer, from the time of heroes. She tells that Stannis is the embodiment of the fabled hero and he withdraws a flaming sword from the burning effigies of the seven false gods of Westeros. Davos is impressed by Melisandre's powers, but concerned by Stannis' willingness to alienate what few allies they have. Davos has a pint with Salladhor Saan, a Lysene pirate. He brings news of the wars on the mainland and demands that they attack King's Landing while it is vulnerable. Saan also has a very negative view of the whole Azor Ahai thing - he, Azor Ahai, murdered his wife to make his sword, not exactly an inspiring antecedent for Stannis to emulate. Davos meets with Stannis. The king wants his smuggler to sail to every port in Westeros with news of Joffrey's parentage and Stannis' rightful claim. Davos doubts that they have the proof, but Stannis reminds him of Edric Storm - Robert's recognized bastard son at Storm's End. Stannis bemoans that he is in the right, but has the least gold and men of the various claimants. He notes that his only assets are his navy and Melisandre. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Stannis Baratheon - (Arguably) The rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms. Elder brother of Renly Baratheon. Husband to Selyse. Father of Shireen. Melisandre - The Red Woman of Ashaii. Priestess of R'Hellor, the Lord of Light. Advisor to King Stannis. Selyse (Florent) Baratheon - Wife of Stannis Baratheon, (arguably) rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Mother of Shireen. Ser Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight. Advisor to King Stannis Baratheon. Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Crowned King in the North after his victory at Riverrun. Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Beheaded for treason by order of King Joffrey Baratheon. Renly Baratheon - Robert and Stannis' youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End. Husband to Margery Tyrell. Claimant to the Iron Throne. Joffrey Baratheon - King of the Seven Kingdoms, as son of the former King Robert. Known to be the bastard son of his mother Cersei and her twin Jamie Lannister. After traversing the mean streets of King's Landing, Arya winds up following the crowd to the Sept of Baelor. There she finds her father, sister, King Joffrey, and the rest. Ned admits to treason and hails Joffrey as the true king. That should then get Sansa what she asked for: mercy for her father. However, Joffrey being Joffrey, he instead calls for Ned's head. The guys walk you through the whole somber affair. Chapter Review: Arya Stark has been living rough on the streets of King's Landing, since fleeing from the Lannister guards. She's been beaten up, had her belongings stolen, and gone hungry. After killing a fat pigeon, Arya makes her way down to the wharfs. There she finds the Wind Witch, the same ship her father scheduled to take her and Sansa home to Winterfell. Stark men hang around out front. Arya can't believe it. However, as she gets closer, she realizes that she doesn't recognize any of the men. Smelling a trap, she leaves before they realize who she is. She leaves the wharfs and heads to Flea Bottom to eat, only to discover that her pigeon is missing. Dejected, hungry, and beaten up, Arya follows the crowd and the sounds of bells to the Sept of Baelor. There she finds her father flanked by gold cloaks of the city watch. After smiling at Sansa, he turns to the crowd and proclaims that no treason will go unpunished, while he's king. He asks Ser Ilyn Payne to bring him Ned's head. Arya tries to rush the stage, but before she can get there, she's grabbed by a stranger. Arya realizes he's not actually a stranger. It's Yoren of the Night's Watch. Simon and Mackelly continue their watch. Chapter Review: Jon has burned his hand in finally killing off Othor. While he's nursing it, Lord Commander Mormont presents him with a sword. It is the family sword of the Mormonts, it too was burned but the Valyrian steel survived. The new handle replaces the bear with a direwolf. Jon decides to keep the name, Longclaw, as it works as well for a wolf as a bear. Even better news for Jon is that Alliser Thorne has been sent to King's Landing to make the case for more troops, with the help of Jafar Flowers' trusty and un-decomposing hand. Jon is very concerned about the latest rumors from the south: Robb calling the banners and marching south to fight for their father. Jon is summoned to help maester Aemon feed his ravens. The old man reminds Jon of his vows. Sansa attends King Joffrey's first court session. It's everything she never dreamed of. Janos Slynt gets a meteoric promotion, Ser Barristan Selmy gets similarly precipitous demotion. And Sansa begs for her father's life. Despite a chorus of naysayers, good King Joffrey is moved to mercy. The boys cast a skeptical eye over the whole thing. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark enters the throne room and is treated as a leper by all. Even drunken Ser Dontos Hollard stifles his greeting when reminded of who she is. No matter, she's on a mission. Pycelle reads out a list of people who are expected to come to King's Landing to pledge fealty to the new King. It's pretty much everyone in Westeros. Arya is on the list - which gives Sansa hope that her sister might have escaped. Janos Slynt is given the Lordship of Harrenhal and a seat on the Small Council. Cersei is named regent. Tywin Lannister is named Hand of the King. Barristan Selmy is then unceremoniously fired from his role as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He storms out muttering mutinous words about Stannis' claim to the throne. Sansa's moment arrives. She begs forgiveness for her father. She puts his lack of judgement down to the milk of the poppy he was taking for his broken leg. The Small Council advise the King to harden his heart, but King Joffrey claims to be moved by Sansa's sweet words. Provided that Lord Stark retracts his prior accusations and pledge fealty, there will be mercy. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King's Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert's will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert's heir comes of age. Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned's helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll. Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert's will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei's children are not Robert's and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they've been paid to do, and kill all of Ned's men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Oh and now he's dead. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
King Robert has been mortally wounded by a boar. Ned's plan to tell him that his children were cuckoos turns to ashes in his mouth. Cersei, Renly, Varys, Petry Baelish - all start scheming for the next round of the Game of Thrones. Is Ned morally nimble enough to keep up? Mac and Simon mourn the fallen king and consider every angle of the implications. Chapter Review: Thanks to a surfeit of wine from his loyal squire Lancel Lannister, King Robert gets gored by a boar and the two-day journey back to King's Landing has allowed the wound to mortify. There is nothing Pycelle can do. Ned transcribes the King's last will and testament, with a slight edit, for the good of the realm. Cersei departs to...who knows? Selmy blames himself. Varys blames Lancel. Renly suggests to Ned that they take Joffrey into custody to ensure adherence to the terms of Ned's will: namely that Ned act as regent and projector of the realm until Joffrey comes of age. Ned writes to Stannis congratulating him on becoming king. Littlefinger paints a grim picture of the realm under Stannis, who doesn't command the love that Robert did nor demonstrates the level of forgiveness and flexibility that a king will need. Ned is set on his path. Baelish agrees to help but he'll need money to pay off the gold cloaks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend.King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Protector of the realm. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Queen Cersei Lannister - Wife of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Stannis Baratheon - Older younger brother of King Robert and Lord of Dragonstone. Renly Baratheon - King Robert's youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End and Master of Laws. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Ned gets a turn on the Iron Throne while King Robert is off hunting. His leg hurts and so do the various bits of him getting poked by the chair - curse you Robert, and you Aegon the Conqueror. His comfort is hardly enhanced by news from the Riverlands of murder and pillage by Lannister-men. Simon and Mackelly consider every implication. Chapter Review:Eddard Stark is in charge and sits the Iron Throne. He's not thrilled by either the responsibility, (Robert is off hunting) nor the ergonomics. While Sansa watches on, he is confronted with news of atrocities in the Riverlands. Un-sigiled brigands have sacked three towns, killing and raping - but not stealing. The only clue as to their identity - one of them is as big as a mountain. Against Grand Maester Pycelle's objections, Ned strips Ser Gregor Clegane of his titles, lands, and life and dispatches a sizable contingent under the King's banner to carry out the justice. He gives the lead of this mission to Ser Beric Dondarrion. In so doing, he slights Ser Loras Tyrell and Ser Ilyn Payne (the King's executioner). Lord Varys suggests that this might not have been the best strategic decision. But we note that Ned carefully picked only men loyal to either House Stark or House Barratheon. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Protector of the realm. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Lord Varys - Master of Spies for King Robert. Ser Gregor Clegane - The Mountain who Rides. Lannister loyalist. Murderer of Rhaegar Targaryen's children. Lord Beric Dondarrion - The Lightning Lord of Blackhaven. Tasked by Ned to bring down the King's justice on Gregor Clegane. Edmure Tully - Heir to Riverrun. Seemingly in charge of defenses, while his father Hoster Tully recuperates from illness. We comb through the facts and details to make sure you know what's happening, why, and the possible repercussions. Chapter Review: We find Ned, some of his household guard, and Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish visiting the brothel Jon Arryn and Stannis Baratheon had visited prior to Jon's death. After promising Barra's mother that the girl will want for nothing, Ned and the guys head back to the Red Keep. On the way, Ned reminisces about promises he made his sister Lyanna and sees his bastard son Jon's face in the rain. While Ned and Littlefinger are discussing why Jon Arryn was visiting King Robert's bastards, the street becomes flooded with Lannister men. Jamie Lannister tells Ned he's looking for his brother Tyrion, who Catelyn Stark has taken captive. Ned tells Jamie that Tyrion was taken on his orders, to answer for his crimes. Jamie lets Littlefinger leave and then threatens to kill Ned, but Ned says if he does Cat will kill Tyrion. Before Jamie rides off, he tells his men not to touch Ned, but to kill his men. Ned and Robert go toe-to-toe over how to handle Dany's pregnancy. When all is said and done, king Robert needs a new Hand of the King, and Ned is headed back to Winterfell. We sit in on the Small Council meeting, tell you what happened, why, and make conjectures about the consequences. Chapter Review: King Robert is in attendance at the Small Council meeting. He has learned that Daenerys Targaryen is pregnant and says now is the time to extinguish the Targaryen flame for good. Ned says it's nothing short of murder to kill a 14-year-old girl and her unborn child. Increasingly heated words are exchanged between the two until king Robert can take no more. He puts it to a vote of the Small Council and wins 4-1. Ned refuses to order the assassination and resigns as Hand of the King. A furious king Robert tells him to get out before his head ends up on a spike. Back at the Tower of the Hand, Ned has mixed feelings about leaving. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Ned has a busy, but for the most part pleasant, day. King Robert is acting like his old self, queen Cersei is nowhere to be seen, he spends time at the tourney with Sansa, and his girls are getting along at dinner. However, when Lord Varys shows up to his chambers, he brings tidings that cause an abrupt end to any pleasantness. Chapter Review: Eddard "Ned" Stark and Ser Barriston Selmy look over the body of Ser Hugh of the Vale, the newly made knight and former squire to Jon Arryn, killed the day before by Ser Gregor Clegane. Ned had been planning to talk to Hugh about Jon Arryn's death. Later, Ned and Ser Barriston explain to Robert that nobody will dare risk hurting him in the melee, so he will win but it won't be a fair fight. Robert begrudgingly accepts the fact and agrees not to enter. During the tourney, Ser Gregor Clegane is unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell. In his anger, Gergor kills his horse and then attacks Loras. However, his brother Sandor Clegane (AKA The Hound) jumps in and saves Loras. The brothers duel until the king commands they stop. A grateful Loras concedes the final match to The Hound. That night a stranger visits Ned's chambers. It turns out to be Lord Varys in disguise. Varys tells Ned of a plan to see Robert killed during the melee, and that queen Cersei forbade Robert from entering loudly and publicly so that Robert would surely enter the competition. He also says that it was Ser Hugh who poisoned Jon Arryn. When Ned asks Varys why Jon Arryn was killed, his answer is that Jon was asking questions. Ned has received info from the remaining Arryn household staff about Jon Arryn's final days. Following one tip leads to a shocking discovery, in the shape of a young blacksmith's apprentice who looks an awful lot like a certain king. However, we don't stop there. We comb through all of the information he's gotten and consider ways that the dots might connect. Chapter Review: During a Small Council meeting, Eddard Stark hears that the Gold Cloaks, the city watch, are woefully understaffed for keeping the peace, due to the the influx of people in town for the Hand's tourney. Ned OKs hiring more men and provides 20 of his own guard. Back in his chambers, he peruses the book Jon Arryn had looked at the day before his illness began, but Ned can't find anything useful in it.Jory Cassel has tracked down all of the people left in the city connected to Jon Arryn. Most of the information consists of rumors but Stannis Baratheon, the king's brother, keeps coming up in connection with Jon. Ned follows one of the leads to an armorer who Jon supposedly commissioned to make a suit of fancy armor. It turns out that Jon did not actually hire the man to make anything. He came to see a boy. When Ned sees the boy, he realizes that he is clearly a son of King Robert. The chapter ends with Ned wondering why Jon Arryn was visiting a bastard of Robert's, and why it was worth his life. The inexorable progress to King's Landing of Robert and his new Hand Ned is further delayed while the two of them try their hardest to keep a lid on the powder keg caused by Joffrey and Arya's confrontation. They'd have managed it too but for Cersei and her thirst for vengeance at any cost. No relationship escapes unscathed and we break it all down. Chapter Review Arya is found and taken before the king. A kangaroo-court is quickly convened in which Arya tells the truth, Joffrey lies through his teeth, and Sansa betrays everyone by saying she cannot recall the events. Robert, channeling his inner Solomon, judges that Arya needs to be disciplined by Ned while he will do the same with Joffrey. But Cersei has no time for fairness or win-wins. She goads the king until the sentence is increased to death - for Lady? Sansa's direwolf? Go figure. Ned does that Ned thing and dispatches Lady himself. Sansa is broken-hearted and Arya is seething. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The guys discuss the first serious contender for the role of Jon Snow's mother and debate why Ned refuses to tell Catelyn who the woman is. We also get insight into Ned's feelings of inadequacy toward his older brother Brandon, who was supposed to marry Catelyn and be the Lord of Winterfell before he was killed by King Aerys. Chapter Review: The chapter sees Ned and Catelyn discussing whether to accept Robert's offer of Hand of the King. Ned wants to decline. Cat thinks that Ned should accept. A secret note from Cat's sister Lysa Arryn arrives that indicates that Jon Arryn was murdered and points the finger at Queen Cersei Lannister as the murderer. That convinces them of the need to say yes, because someone needs to protect King Robert and the realm from the perfidious Lannasters. The next matters to resolve involve who should go to King's Landing and who should stay in Winterfell. Catelyn is disappointed when Ned tells her that she is staying in Winterfell with Robb and baby Rickon. The rest of the kids will go to King's Landing with Ned. Once that has been decided, they discuss what to do with Jon Snow. Catelyn refuses to have him in Winterfell. Ned feels there is no place for him in King's Landing. Ned agrees that it would make sense to let Jon go to Castle Black with Benjen to become a brother of the Night's Watch. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Ashara Dayne - Sister of Ser Arthur Dayne. Possible mother for Jon Snow. Lysa Arryn - Sister of Catelyn Stark and wife of the late Hand of the King Jon Arryn.House Arryn - One of the great houses of Westeros.
