Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Spoiler alert: Ned Stark is finally dead. The chapter we've all been waiting for and dreading is finally here, and this episode tackles the one question that we're both consumed by. Why does he die in an Arya chapter, instead of a Sansa chapter, or - you know - an Eddard chapter. Lighting our way towards an answer is a whole cavalcade of thoughts, theories, and literary analysis. Let's dig in! Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! The stars have alighted in this very special episode of Second Breakfast as we accidentally work together to form one massive theory about the avalanche of echoes crushing poor Ned Stark. After we catalogue these eerie similarities, we ask the more important question: so what? What is the point of all these dozens of distillation echoes? The answer takes us to a shockingly simple and powerful place. LINKS: Patreon, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com

Maggie tracks some color theory to reveal the power dynamics of the throne room coup. We stop to consider Ned Stark and all of his various principles, shortcomings, and tragedies. When does he lose? Why does he lose? And more importantly, why do the Lannisters allow him to survive past this pivotal chapter? Get bonus episodes on Patreon! Happy Halloween! This chapter is a ghost story. Cam analyzes the death of King Robert in concert with Viserys Targaryen's death in the last chapter. What sets apart these two failed conquerors who died without an heir? We build to a broader discussion of what defines a character in this series – their memorable deaths or their fateful decisions? Maggie deepens the analysis with a discussion on Ned's haunted dreams and the many ‘promises' weighing him down. We close with the next phase of our ‘Prince That Was Promised' theory crafting. Cersei Lannister arrives on the scene, but she's not quite the character we grew to love on HBO. By trying to read this character introduction with fresh eyes, we see her in a whole new light, like a lost Targaryen conqueror falling from the pages of Fire & Blood. Cam revisits the ghost of Ned Stark and the grey soup of immorality he drowned in. Maggie completes her seen & unseen analysis as the omens of good and ill rage in the sky. Also, someone in the book finally looks at the camera and says the title. LINKS: Patreon, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, Cam's stories Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com

Maggie tracks the omens and bloody motifs nipping at Ned's heels, while Cam tries to understand Ned's principled defiance as a singular act of sacrificial heroism comparable to the finale of The Witcher series, and the Pilgrim's ascension to Heaven in Dante's Divine Comedy. Ned Stark's turning point becomes a breaking point as the ghosts of his past and horrors of his present force him to confront his bleak future. We break down this purgatorial distillation echo to make the case that Ned has become one of the ghosts in his dreams. We close by reviewing four more Wizard of Ozstyle man-behind-the-curtain reveals that see the author shattering the romantic archetypes of fantasy. Cam starts us off with eight provocative similarities and differences from our new perspective on the Stark/Lannister rivalry. Get bonus episodes on Patreon! This chapter sits at squarely the dramatic intersection of philosophy and politics. Cam chases down George R. R. Martin's shockingly unvarnished critique of power. As a thought experiment, we call King Robert's bluff and imagine how the series would have ended if this plot against Daenerys Targaryen had been successful. Cam steps out of his comfort zone and into Maggie's, and we try to compose a Renaissance-esque painting of this chapter's heroic deconstruction. Maggie examines Robert's and Ned's relationship through the lens of control and choices, and aims to understand the point at which Ned's failure becomes inevitable. Get bonus episodes on Patreon! For a character who's so often described as “simple”, Ned is proving time and again to be one of the most rewarding to unpack. We start this discussion with different perspectives on Ned's current position in the titular “game,” and both walk away with a deeper understanding of him. Is Eddard Stark a stubborn Northman who refuses to play the game? Is he a floundering outsider, desperately clinging to any sense of control he can? Or is he playing his cards close to his chest, learning as he goes and cleverly identifying the right allies? We contemplate these questions and more, through the lens of character echoes, clever word choice, and the harsh irony of this world's political system. In this episode, we look at Ned's unsteady relationship with honesty in a world of liars. Maggie returns to the themes of femininity and unseen power that have complicated our Fire & Blood episodes over on Patreon, this time to examine the relationship between 'whores' and 'bastards'. Cam wonders if parts of Westeros are actually cursed by an overexposure to the problem of evil, and tries to dig deeper into the claim that GRRM's style of fantasy is 'historical'. We work through cycles of history, repeated mistakes, self-sabotage, and the important difference between corruption and the much sneakier, ever-present temptation. Robb returns to Riverrun, where he exchanges forgiveness of transgressions with his mother. Cat for freeing Jamie. Robb for marrying a non-Frey. Robb also scolds his uncle Edmure for preventing Tywin and his army from reaching the Westerlands, where Robb's force laid in wait. All consider ways to appease House Frey's wounded ego. Simon and Mackelly peruse belated wedding gifts.Chapter Review:Catelyn Stark is alerted that her son King Robb has commanded that she join him in the great hall. There, she is quickly forgiven by her son for freeing Jamie Lannister. Lord Rickard Karstark is not so forgiving. He calls her actions treason. After the hall has been cleared, Robb introduces Cat to a group of strangers who surround him. Ser Rolph Spicer, his sister Sybell Westerling, and her children. The last of those children he introduces as Jeyne, his new bride and queen. Cat realizes immediately that this means they've lost the support of the Freys, as Robb agreed to marry a Frey to cement the house's allegiance to him.King Robb and Brynden Blackfish Tully then lay into Cat's brother Ser Edmure Tully for harassing Tywin's army, as it tried to ford the Red Fork on it's way back to the Westerlands. It turns out that Robb and his force were waiting on Tywin's army and planned to pin them in the west or destroy them. That would've allowed Stannis Baratheon to destroy the Lannisters in King's Landing. Instead, Edmure's victory over Tywin allowed him to get word of Stannis' attack on King's Landing and swoop in and save the city.Cat says none of that matters, at the moment. More important is winning back the north from the Iron Born. Robb thinks the only chance they have of success is to earn back the Frey's fealty. There must be something he can offer to Lord Walder Frey. Cat doesn't think it is something, as much as it is someone.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Catelyn "Cat" Stark - Eldest child of Hoster Tully, widow of Ned Stark, father of King Robb.King Robb Stark: Eldest son of Eddard "Ned" and Cat Stark. Ned rides with King Robert.
Did I say Joyce's parallax is a central issue in the series? Well, this chapter gives us some key evidence for that statement. Words, lines and scenes are doubled, offering two interpretations or takes of the same event or thing. If you're going to write thousands of pages of text using the point of view structure, you have to show that points of view differ, that they matter. George does some of that work in this chapter. And Joyce isn't the only work alluded to here. Robert and Ned's descent down into the crypts is evocative of other well known journeys down into the land of the dead--in Homer, Virgil and Dante. But above all, the language in this chapter most closely mirrors the descent down into Plato's Cave. The Allegory of the Cave is so important to GRRM's series that I did an entire special episode on it. That's because while we formally encounter it here, we are going to be dealing with this issue for all five books, so best come to grips with it now. For our purposes here in the re-read, it's enough to note the links, the suggestion that we are operating in Plato's Cave of shadow reality. And if that's correct, then it should color our understanding of everything that passes between Ned and Robert in this chapter. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/glen-reed/message

The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
On Dragonstone, Davos watches Melisandre burn the gods of The Seven. He has a drink with pirate Salladhor Saan. He meets with King Stannis and is commissioned to go spread the word of Stannis' rightful claim to the people of Westeros. Simon and Mackelly consider converting. Chapter Review: Melisandre reveals the prophecy of Azor Ahai and his flaming sword Lighhtbringer, from the time of heroes. She tells that Stannis is the embodiment of the fabled hero and he withdraws a flaming sword from the burning effigies of the seven false gods of Westeros. Davos is impressed by Melisandre's powers, but concerned by Stannis' willingness to alienate what few allies they have. Davos has a pint with Salladhor Saan, a Lysene pirate. He brings news of the wars on the mainland and demands that they attack King's Landing while it is vulnerable. Saan also has a very negative view of the whole Azor Ahai thing - he, Azor Ahai, murdered his wife to make his sword, not exactly an inspiring antecedent for Stannis to emulate. Davos meets with Stannis. The king wants his smuggler to sail to every port in Westeros with news of Joffrey's parentage and Stannis' rightful claim. Davos doubts that they have the proof, but Stannis reminds him of Edric Storm - Robert's recognized bastard son at Storm's End. Stannis bemoans that he is in the right, but has the least gold and men of the various claimants. He notes that his only assets are his navy and Melisandre. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Stannis Baratheon - (Arguably) The rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms. Elder brother of Renly Baratheon. Husband to Selyse. Father of Shireen. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa tries to come to terms with her reality. King Joffrey reveals that they are still to be married, that his name-day is coming up, and that his cruelty doesn't end with just killing her father. Meryn Trant puts on the hurt and Sandor Clegane is uncommonly solicitous. The guys dab the blood from Sansa's cheek and help to plot our revenge. Chapter Review: Sansa is unwashed and ignored in her chambers in King's Landing. She's not eating and bouncing between awful dreams of her father's death and the awful reality of it. She feels utterly betrayed having kept her side of every bargain. Joffrey tells her to get up and Meryn Trant gives her something to cry about. She steels her resolve and attends Joffrey at court. He's his usual self. Bored and inconsiderate punctuated by bouts of being engaged but vile. After he takes his leave, he demands Sansa join him. The Hound encourages her compliance - but kind of nicely. Joffrey's outing is to see the heads on spikes, including Ned and Septa Mordane. He knows how to show a girl a good time. Sansa gives Joffrey some sass and Meryn Trant beats her bloody again. Sansa toys with the notion of pushing Joffrey off the battlements, but as her thought crystallizes into action Clegane interposes and gently dabs the blood from her lips. She thanks him and a weird alliance is cemented. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
After traversing the mean streets of King's Landing, Arya winds up following the crowd to the Sept of Baelor. There she finds her father, sister, King Joffrey, and the rest. Ned admits to treason and hails Joffrey as the true king. That should then get Sansa what she asked for: mercy for her father. However, Joffrey being Joffrey, he instead calls for Ned's head. The guys walk you through the whole somber affair. Chapter Review: Arya Stark has been living rough on the streets of King's Landing, since fleeing from the Lannister guards. She's been beaten up, had her belongings stolen, and gone hungry. After killing a fat pigeon, Arya makes her way down to the wharfs. There she finds the Wind Witch, the same ship her father scheduled to take her and Sansa home to Winterfell. Stark men hang around out front. Arya can't believe it. However, as she gets closer, she realizes that she doesn't recognize any of the men. Smelling a trap, she leaves before they realize who she is. She leaves the wharfs and heads to Flea Bottom to eat, only to discover that her pigeon is missing. Dejected, hungry, and beaten up, Arya follows the crowd and the sounds of bells to the Sept of Baelor. There she finds her father flanked by gold cloaks of the city watch. She also sees her sister Sansa, King Joffrey, Queen Cersei, and most of the royal entourage. Ned announces that he's committed treason. That he tried to steal the throne for himself. Joffrey is the true king of the Seven Kingdoms. Joffrey tells the crowd that his mother wants him to allow Ned to take The Black. That Sansa has begged him for mercy. After smiling at Sansa, he turns to the crowd and proclaims that no treason will go unpunished, while he's king. He asks Ser Ilyn Payne to bring him Ned's head. Arya tries to rush the stage, but before she can get there, she's grabbed by a stranger. Arya realizes he's not actually a stranger. It's Yoren of the Night's Watch. He refers to Arya as "boy," tells her that she'll be coming with him. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Ned suffers some pretty brutal sensory deprivation down in the dungeons. Allowing his overactive imagination to run wild. A surprise visitor gives him some advice on how to free himself, but can Eddard bring himself to do the smart thing, instead of the right thing? Mac and Simon are more than capable of both. Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is visited by dreams, ghosts, and eunuchs in the Red Keep's dungeons. He dreams of Rhaegar Targaryen presenting Lyanna Stark with the blue roses, after winning the jousting at the Harrenhal Tourney. He's mocked by King Robert's ghost for where his uncompromising stiff neck has brought him. He gets some wine and advice from Lord Varys.Varys explains how the realm is descending into anarchy, but that Sansa has made a plea for Ned's life. Lord Stark must swallow his pride and admit to treason, proclaim Joffrey the rightful king, and bend the knee. The next visitor could bring Eddard some much needed food, or Sansa' head, it all depends on Ned.Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Father of King Joffrey Baratheon. Ser Barriston Selmy - Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa attends King Joffrey's first court session. It's everything she never dreamed of. Janos Slynt gets a meteoric promotion, Ser Barristan Selmy gets similarly precipitous demotion. And Sansa begs for her father's life. Despite a chorus of naysayers, good King Joffrey is moved to mercy. The boys cast a skeptical eye over the whole thing. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark enters the throne room and is treated as a leper by all. Even drunken Ser Dontos Hollard stifles his greeting when reminded of who she is. No matter, she's on a mission. Pycelle reads out a list of people who are expected to come to King's Landing to pledge fealty to the new King. It's pretty much everyone in Westeros. Arya is on the list - which gives Sansa hope that her sister might have escaped. Janos Slynt is given the Lordship of Harrenhal and a seat on the Small Council. Cersei is named regent. Tywin Lannister is named Hand of the King. Barristan Selmy is then unceremoniously fired from his role as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He storms out muttering mutinous words about Stannis' claim to the throne. Sansa's moment arrives. She begs forgiveness for her father. She puts his lack of judgement down to the milk of the poppy he was taking for his broken leg. The Small Council advise the King to harden his heart, but King Joffrey claims to be moved by Sansa's sweet words. Provided that Lord Stark retracts his prior accusations and pledge fealty, there will be mercy. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King's Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert's will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert's heir comes of age. Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned's helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll. Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert's will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei's children are not Robert's and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they've been paid to do, and kill all of Ned's men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Oh and now he's dead. Renly Baratheon - King Robert's youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End and Master of Laws. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
King Robert has been mortally wounded by a boar. Ned's plan to tell him that his children were cuckoos turns to ashes in his mouth. Cersei, Renly, Varys, Petry Baelish - all start scheming for the next round of the Game of Thrones. Is Ned morally nimble enough to keep up? Mac and Simon mourn the fallen king and consider every angle of the implications. Chapter Review: Thanks to a surfeit of wine from his loyal squire Lancel Lannister, King Robert gets gored by a boar and the two-day journey back to King's Landing has allowed the wound to mortify. There is nothing Pycelle can do. Ned transcribes the King's last will and testament, with a slight edit, for the good of the realm. Cersei departs to...who knows? Selmy blames himself. Varys blames Lancel. Renly suggests to Ned that they take Joffrey into custody to ensure adherence to the terms of Ned's will: namely that Ned act as regent and projector of the realm until Joffrey comes of age. Ned writes to Stannis congratulating him on becoming king. Littlefinger paints a grim picture of the realm under Stannis, who doesn't command the love that Robert did nor demonstrates the level of forgiveness and flexibility that a king will need. Ned is set on his path. Baelish agrees to help but he'll need money to pay off the gold cloaks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend.King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Eddard Stark is now in possession of the biggest secret in King's Landing. News so immense it could destroy the very kingdom. But the king is off hunting and Ned has few friends with whom to share the news. What to do? Personally we wouldn't have advised confiding in Cersei Bloomin' Lannister, but then again we're morally flexible soft southern children of summer. From their respective castles, Mac and Simon analyze the latest happenings and weigh up the latest battle between Ned's honor and common sense. Chapter Review: Ned entertains some of his Small Council cohorts - Grand Maester Pycelle and Petyr LittleFinger Baelish. Apparently, Tywin Lannister doesn't appreciate having his bannerman, Ser Gregor Clegane brought to heel. Ned's past caring about Tywin. But he does still care about Cersei's children. They parley in the infrequently- used King's Landing Godswood. It goes about as well as might be expected. She admits to everything (even providing the identity of the father), but she does not admit to Jon Arryn's murder. Cersei tries to use her feminine wiles - but come on - this is Lord Eddard Stark. Ned advises her to gather her children and flee... far. Robert's wrath will follow her as far as she could possibly run. Cersei tells Ned he missed the chance to seize the throne for himself. And follows up with, "In the Game of Thrones you win, or you die." Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Ned gets a turn on the Iron Throne while King Robert is off hunting. His leg hurts and so do the various bits of him getting poked by the chair - curse you Robert, and you Aegon the Conqueror. His comfort is hardly enhanced by news from the Riverlands of murder and pillage by Lannister-men. Simon and Mackelly consider every implication. Chapter Review:Eddard Stark is in charge and sits the Iron Throne. He's not thrilled by either the responsibility, (Robert is off hunting) nor the ergonomics. While Sansa watches on, he is confronted with news of atrocities in the Riverlands. Un-sigiled brigands have sacked three towns, killing and raping - but not stealing. The only clue as to their identity - one of them is as big as a mountain. Against Grand Maester Pycelle's objections, Ned strips Ser Gregor Clegane of his titles, lands, and life and dispatches a sizable contingent under the King's banner to carry out the justice. He gives the lead of this mission to Ser Beric Dondarrion. In so doing, he slights Ser Loras Tyrell and Ser Ilyn Payne (the King's executioner). Lord Varys suggests that this might not have been the best strategic decision. But we note that Ned carefully picked only men loyal to either House Stark or House Barratheon. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Protector of the realm. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Lord Varys - Master of Spies for King Robert. Ser Gregor Clegane - The Mountain who Rides. Lannister loyalist. Murderer of Rhaegar Targaryen's children. Lord Beric Dondarrion - The Lightning Lord of Blackhaven. Tasked by Ned to bring down the King's justice on Gregor Clegane. Edmure Tully - Heir to Riverrun. Seemingly in charge of defenses, while his father Hoster Tully recuperates from illness.
