Cersei meets with her new handpicked Small Council who blithely make momentous decisions with huge ramifications. Simon and Mackelly watch on in despair.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei is, not for the first time, disappointed to find the severed head of the wrong dwarf presented to her. She offers no punishment to the murderers for fear of deterring those hunting Tyrion. She and Qyburn head to the Small Council. He has prepared the skull to be sent to Dorne to satisfy the Martell's grievance against the now, presumably dead, Gregor Clegane. The Small Council is at full complement - with men Cersei has personally elevated not because of obvious talents for their positions, but due to perceived loyalty. It doesn't make for a very thoughtful meeting. They decide to stay out of the trouble in the Vale, but demand that no harm befall Petyr Baelish. That they'll ignore the flock of Sparrows that continues to descend on King's Landing. That they have no idea who the next High Septon will be. That the grumblings from the masses about the crimes of the Red Wedding are best dealt with by waiting for Lord Frey to die and hoping that his successor will give up a few rivals as scapegoats. That to pay for a new royal fleet the crown will default on its loan payments to both the Faith and the Iron Bank of Braavos. That Lord Manderly should execute Ser Davos who came to ask for White Harbor's support for Stannis' claim. That news of dragons in Essos can be safely ignored. And that Jon Snow has betrayed the neutrality of the Night's Watch by siding with Stannis.Cersei arranges a complex plan involving Osney Kettleblack seducing Queen Margaery, being caught in the act, sent to the Wall by King Tommen, murdering Jon Snow, being pardoned, and then becoming Cersei's concubine for his service. Sansa considers the two sides of Petyr Baelish's character. She witnesses Marillion falsely implicating himself in the murder of Lysa Arryn, and Nestor Royce being wooed by Baelish. Simon and Mackelly wonder if these life-lessons are standing her in good stead.Chapter Review:Sansa is being kept awake by Marillion's singing. A problem with those sky-cells being so open. Apparently he's only got his voice left, as Mord has taken care of several fingers and both eyes. She assumes that when Nestor Royce arrives Marillion will be kept quiet, but Littlefinger says quite the opposite. The singer will be brought before the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon to sing the song that Baelish wants him to. Sansa is worried, but Petyr is relaxed - even if Marillion doesn't play ball, it is his word against theirs.Marillion admits to the murder before Royce, his empty sockets bandaged in silk. Littlefinger entertains the High Steward in his solar afterward. There he presents Royce with a hereditary lordship of the Gates of the Moon - elevating him and his descendants at a stroke. The document is signed by the new Lord Protector of the Vale, so Nestor has a very strong reason to back the widower's claim.Sansa follows the machinations, and Baelish is impressed - she really is his daughter (only, you know, she isn't). But he insists that she maintain the ruse, that she is Alayne, Petyr's natural-born daughter. Even in private. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Eldest surviving Stark child. Brienne continues to search for Sansa Stark. None of her leads pan out in Duskendale. But not all is lost, she gets a fancy sigil on her shield. She considers Sansa's possible alternative locations and gets awfully close to the truth. She discovers that a familiar face (to us) is following her. Simon and Jenny wish Brienne would follow her instincts.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth arrives in Duskendale; her first official destination on her journey to find Sansa Stark. Her House Lothston shield gives her trouble at the town gate and the guard suggests his sister as an artist to repaint the shield. After dropping the shield off and describing a sigil she'd like to see on it, she makes for the Dun Fort. The lord of the Dun Fort is absent so she is shown to his maester. After reading her letter from King Tommen proving she is on official royal business, the maester reveals she's not the first to ask about Sansa and Dontos Hollard; more like the 21st.The maester breaks it to Brienne that Ser Dontos had little ties to Duskendale, as the rest of his family was wiped out years previously. Dejected, Brienne leaves and returns to the inn to wait on her shield. At the inn, she meets a dwarf holy man who tells her of a fool in Maidenpool with two travel companions. It intrigues Brienne enough to consider it as her next stop. The next morning the shield is delivered to her and exceeds her expectations. Brienne heads north up the coast but realizes she's being followed. She springs a trap on the unwanted company. When she has the man where she wants him, it's revealed that he's Podrick Payne, who was hoping that following Brienne would lead him to Tyrion.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Brienne of Tarth - Charged with rescuing Sansa Stark.Sansa Stark - Eldest surviving Stark child. Ser Creighton tells of his amazing, hardly believable, exploits at the Battle of the Blackwater. Ser Illifer is a quieter soul. But it is the latter who figures out who she is. He accuses her of Renly's murder, but she denies it. They meet a group of “sparrows” the next day. These adherents of the Faith of the Seven are heading to King's Landing with the bones of murdered holy people. They hope to find protection from King Tommen when they get there. Another knight, Ser Shadrich, tells Brienne that she is not the only hunter. Varys has offered a reward for Sansa's whereabouts. Brienne feigns ignorance. That night she slips away from the others - preferring the lonely road.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Brienne of Tarth - Charged with rescuing Sansa Stark.Sansa Stark - Eldest surviving Stark child. Currently in the Eyrie with Petyr Baelish.Illifer the Penniless - Taciturn hedge knight.Creighton Longbough - Loquacious hedge knight.Ser Shadrich - Hedge knight, also seeking for Sansa to claim the reward offered by Varys. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa builds a snow-castle, and squabbles with Robert Arryn. Petyr Baelish kisses her against her will. Lysa confronts Sansa about trying to steal Littlefinger from her and threatens to push her out of the Moon Door. Baelish intervenes and pushes Lysa out instead. Simon and Mackelly try to pick up the pieces (not of Lysa, that would be nasty). Chapter Review:Sansa Stark wakes early to snow falling. It makes her wistful for Winterfell. She dresses and builds a snow castle, which quickly turns into Winterfell. She's joined by Petyr Baelish who says she is even more beautiful than her mother was at her age. He kisses her, she yields briefly before pushing him away. Cousin Robert arrives and uses his doll as a giant to smash the walls. Sansa tries to stop him, and his beloved doll is destroyed. Later she's summoned to her aunt by the singer Marillion. He's a favorite of Lysa Arryn, to whom he's unfailingly pleasant. He uses this as a license to abuse the servants and force himself on the unwilling. They proceed to the great hall. Lysa saw Sansa kiss Baelish, but blames the child. Sansa protests. Lysa compares Sansa to Catelyn - both want to steal away Lysa's love Petyr. She describes how he deflowered her and the termination of the subsequent pregnancy. She threatens to push Sansa out of the Moon Door, but is prevented by the timely arrival of Lord Baelish. He talks Lysa down. She reveals that it was she who murdered her husband Jon, with the help of Petyr. He reassures Lysa that he only ever loved one woman. She softens, but then he adds “Only Cat” and pushes her out of the door. He calls for guards to arrest Marillion.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish - Former member of the Small Council, now lord of Harrenhal and Protector of the Vale.Lysa Arryn - Lady of the Eyrie. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa flees the scene of the crime with Ser Dontos. After a scary climb she's rowed to deliverance - which turns out to come with a familiar (although not totally friendly) face. Simon and Mackelly consider her future.Chapter Review:Sansa Stark races to the Godswood where she has hidden a change of clothes. When she takes her hair net off, she realizes a black amethyst is missing and gets a sinking feeling in her stomach that it's somehow related to King Joffrey's death. Dontos arrives and denies that the hair net had anything to do with Joff's death. He choked on pie.Dontos leads her out of the castle to a cliff where a secret ladder has been cut out of the stone that leads to the river below. When the pair make down safely, they find a man waiting to row them out to safety. When the little boat reaches a ship, a stunned Sansa discovers Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish waiting for her. Dontos, who stayed behind to row himself back to the castle, asks for his reward of 10,000 gold dragons. Instead, he's killed by three crossbow bolts.Littlefinger explains to a highly-upset Sansa that Dontos did what he did at Littlefinger's command and did so because he was being handsomely paid. Once he'd drunk this payday, he'd sell Sansa again to Varys or Cersei. When Sansa asks why Littlefinger would want to hurt the Lannisters, who gave him so much, he responds that he had no motive. He likes to keep his foes confused. He says he loved Sansa's mother Catelyn and thinks in a different world Sansa might've been his daughter. He tells Sansa to forget about the Lannisters, Tyrion, and King's Landing. She's safe with him and sailing home.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Forcibly married to Tyrion.Ser Dontos Hollard - Drunken jester of King Joffrey, but friend to Sansa.Lord Petyr Baelish - Former member of the Small Council, now lord of Harrenhal. Tyrion has an awkward dinner with Sansa then gets lost in Littlefinger's financial books. He then has a family gathering filled with news of Robb Stark's death and his family's involvement, as well as Tywin's plan for Gregor Clegane. Throughout it all, King Joffrey is rotten, but this time he attacks Tywin. That does not go over well. Mackelly and Simon ponder the punishments for our dear king.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister dines with his wife Sansa Stark. Awkwardness still reigns between them. THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
“Out of the frying pan into the fire”, seems to be an appropriate descriptor for where we are now. We have been battered by Covid, or at least many of us have had that unpleasant experience, but now everyone, even those who sailed through Covid, are about to get swept up in to the next recession. Inflation, rising interest rates, supply chain turmoil, energy supplies being weaponised, the list is long and depressing. Japan relies on foreign markets and if the USA has a sniffle, Japan catches a cold is another old idea. So what happens in sales if we find ourselves getting daily cases of covid deaths and infections under control through vaccinations and herd immunity and yet are now in a global recession? Here are some things to think about. Covid may have wiped out some of your rivals. I couldn't believe that the Heichinrou Chinese restaurant in Yokohama closed down in May. It has been serving customers since 1884 and now is gone. For the other Chinese restaurants who are still in operation in China Town they have seen a major competitor vanquished. The other businesses are still operating and so they have buying needs. In fact, they may have an uptake in customers who cannot go to Heichinrou anymore and so their sales may pick up. It is a sad day when legendary business names fall, particularly in Japan where corporate longevity is treasured, but that is the capitalist system. Maybe your rivals are not extinguished entirely but they may be wounded. They may have fired staff to reduce costs and so their scope of capacity has diminished. They cannot see as many potential clients as before, but maybe you can see them, because you toughed it out and kept your crew together. Recessions are uneven phenomenon. Some industries are hit harder than others. Covid hit tourism, training and hospitality particularly hard, but other industries sailed through the pandemic with barely a flesh wound. The recession will impact certain industries more than others and so it is useful to identify which of those industries will still have the capability to buy. Unlike a global pandemic, most of us have seen recessions before, so we will have some idea which businesses we should concentrate on and which we should avoid worrying about. We will also have probably experienced inflation before too and the ramifications that has on your industry. Look back at what happened in the past for useful lessons on what to expect this time around. In our sales training, we use a matrix which aligns your existing buyers with your products and services. It is always shocking to realise you are only supplying some clients with a very narrow band of offerings. It reminds you that they have multiple needs but you are not servicing them. Maybe you were unable to gain entry before, because the incumbent was so strongly positioned, however Covid may have changed that power balance and now is the time to suggest other solutions from your line-up. Existing clients know you well, they trust you, they will take your call, so you don't have to navigate your way through the serried ferocious gatekeepers to get to the buyer. Existing clients can become past clients quite easily. In our case, the HR Director changes and next thing you know, you are out on the street and they have replaced you with their favoured suppliers. During Covid perhaps some of the line managers have left the company or moved to other sections and maybe there is some nice new buyer who comes to the conversation with an open mind and no baggage. Perhaps the gate keeper is still being a barrier, but at least if you have dealt with that company before, they may be willing to take a message from you, even if they won't transfer your call. You could try and bypass them altogether by sending some mail to the new person or at least to the position most relevant to your business. The beauty of this is that the same gatekeeper who won't transfer the call, will diligently walk over to the manager's desk and drop your parcel on their table. They will open it up at some point and they may decide that you have what they need and be open to talking about reactivating business with you. It works in your favour sometimes too. That nice buyer you have built a strong relationship with, is now in a similar role in another company and they realise you have the solution they need. If you haven't found where they went, now might be a good time to do so. LinkedIn only has about two million followers in Japan, so the chances you can track them on LinkedIn if they are working for a Japanese very domestic company are slim. Often if you call and ask for them, the person taking the call will tell you they have left. If you are lucky, they may be able to tell you where there have gone. The Game of Thrones character Petyr Baelish noted that “chaos is a ladder” and pandemics and recessions are chaotic. It is usually more like snakes and ladders though and sometimes you are lifted up and at other times you are pushed down. Research past recessions and look for which ladders are likely to be pointing up. Get closer to existing clients and see if there are additional services or goods you can supply. For those in the “until recently existing clients” category see if you can rekindle some flame from the ashes of the fire.
Katie Wright came back to the pod to discuss Game of Thrones with me. We talked about our love of Petyr Baelish, Harry Lloyd's excellent performance, the overall horniness of the show and much more.

News of Renly's death has reached the small council in King's Landing. They dispatch Littlefinger to treat with Loras Tyrell - the leader of the faction that hasn't pledged fealty to Stannis. The offer? Renly's widow Margaery Tyrell to marry Joffrey and be queen. Simon and Mackelly consider the implications. Chapter Review: Varys shares the reliable news that Renly is dead and many unreliable accounts of who did it. Tyrion is disappointed, he'd hoped that the Baratheons' fight would drag on for months. The bad news is compounded by the rapid switching allegiance (to Stannis) of the majority of the noble houses. The slightly better news for team-Lannister is that Ser Loras Tyrell has ridden off taking maybe 20 percent of the lords with him. And Ser Courtney Penrose, castellan of Storm's End, fearing a trick, will not open the doors to Stannis until he sees Renly's body - which has gone missing. So how to turn this dissenting minority to the Lannister cause? Tyrion suggests marriage. Should Renly's young widow Margaery (Tyrell) marry Joffrey, then the two wealthiest houses in Westeros would be conjoined. The Lords of the Reach who have now pledged to Stannis would have to reconsider. And the balance of power might just be tipped. After some debate, Petyr Baelish is chosen to take the message to Loras and Margaery. He grifts for every bit of money and influence he can get out of the chore. But Tyrion grudgingly admits he's the right man for the job. After the meeting, Cersei thanks Tyrion for his efforts and kisses him on the forehead. He could not be more suspicious. Tyrion meets with Pycelle, Littlefinger, and Varys, feeding each a different story, hoping to learn which story reaches Cersei's ears. Allister Thorne has arrived, hunger is getting out of hand in King's Landing, and Cersei wants Jamie freed and her father's army to come defend her. A Hand's job is never done! Mackelly and Simon try to prioritize.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister breaks his fast with Grand Maester Pycelle. He dispatches a raven to Doran Martell in Dorne but Tyrion won't be drawn on the letter's content. Tyrion steals a bottle from Pycelle's potion shelves, while the maester isn't looking.Tyrion and Bronn discuss today's supplicants: Tanda Stokeworth with offers of food and her plump unwed daughter, Ser Alliser Thorne newly arrived from the Wall with a hand for the Hand - Tyrion doesn't like Thorne so has him consigned to a dingy cell without meeting with him. A representative of the Bank of Braavos who'd like to discuss repayment by the crown of some loan, sounds like a job for Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish. A discontent Riverlands lordling and local merchants all get fobbed off.Tyrion meets with Baelish and proposes marrying princess Myrcella to young Robert Arynn. If Baelish can broker that and bring the Vale's forces out to oppose Renly and Stannis, the glittering prize of Harrnehal will be his. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The Small Council discusses an appropriate response to Stannis' widely publicized accusation of Cersei's children being Jamie's. Later Tyrion employs all the blacksmiths in King's Landing to make him a monstrous chain. Later still, Tyrion publicly enters a brothel before sneaking out through a secret door to visit Shae in private. Mackelly and Simon debate the levels of cunning on display. Chapter Review:Stannis Baratheon has been sending word of Cersei and Jamie Lannister's incest to every house, great and small, in the realm. The Small Council discusses a response. Cersei wants to quash it completely, in particular so that neither her father nor her children ever hear of it. Wiser heads point out that trying to silence such a rumor tends to indicate a guilty conscience. Littlefinger comes up with the winning idea. They will circulate their own salacious accusation against Stannis: that his daughter Shireen is in fact the child of Patchface the fool. Tyrion Lannister and Bronn meet with the armorers and smiths of King's Landing and commission an almighty chain. Some are worried about their prior commission (from Cersei) to equip the Gold Cloaks, but Tyrion assures them that his project takes priority and he'll protect them from the Queen. Tyrion visit's Chataya's brothel. He makes no attempt to hide. But once inside he exits through a secret tunnel, built by a former Hand of the King, and meets Lord Varys in a stable. There he's disguised as a child on horseback and rides across King's Landing to visit Shae. Returned from our break and ready for a new era comes this, the 99th episode of THE ISLE OF FACES. After long last, we return to our dearest Sansa. In our longest Winds preview chapter yet we are back in a Vale on the edge. Winter is held at bay for now, but we are switching the bloody sands of Meereen for the deepest court intrigues of the Valemen. Sansa Stark, now oceans deep in the persona of Alayne Stone, is still playing the mother role to Sweetrobin, but change is afoot as the Knights of the Vale arrive to compete in a new tourney. Among them is Harry the Heir, the man who could mean complete change to many. He, says Petyr Baelish, is Sansa's mission. He is the next rung on the ladder. Today we see how Sansa is more than prepared for the challenge. Step aboard the Isle for a reminder of what is coming in Episode 100, a discussion on Sansa's own gatekeeping sins in terms of Sweetrobin, how tactically brilliant the idea of a tourney is for winning the Vale, what Petyr Baelish might be planning on the political, westerosi-wide scene, and just how Sansa's latest skills interact with her true self. And yes, I do get just a teeny bit sweary about a certain someone. "Palestine is my country and the country of my ancestors—I will sacrifice myself for the sake of its sons." —Hajj Amin al-Husseini CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains some instances of graphic mob violence and is not suitable for children. In the second episode of History Impossible's first series, we'll be diving head first into the early life of our story's central character, Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the future Grand Mufti of Jerusalem in Palestine. We'll see how he developed his identity as a Palestinian nationalist from a very early age and the activities this passion led him to pursue. We'll look at what he did at the outbreak of the First World War and how his allegiances began to form. We'll look at his rapid ascent to power in the British Mandate following the war, and how he began to clash with these colonial masters. We'll even see the groundwork being laid by a man who would come to be known—fairly or otherwise—as a man behind whom riots and destruction tended to follow. This is the early life story of Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the Petyr Baelish of Palestine. Sansa is in the clutches of the Lannisters. She only wants to marry Joffrey. They only want her to write to her family demanding their fealty. If she can do that, her dreams might come true. Mac and Simon weigh Sansa's decisions and prospects. Chapter Review: Sansa and Jeyne Poole are confined to apartments in Maegor's Holdfast. Jeyne can't stop crying, having witnessed the butchery that the Lannisters visited on the Starks. Sansa missed all that, because instead of packing for the journey home, she went and told the queen her dad's plans and was incarcerated for "her safety." Sansa is presented to the queen and the small council. All agree that she is not really future queenly material any more in light of her father's treason. She tries to defend him, but upon discovering that they might still allow her wedding to happen, she soon forgets his plight. Cersei determines that Jeyne is a bad influence, what with her eye-witnessing and all, so she's to be rehoused by Petyr Baelish.Sansa just needs to write to brother Robb, mother Cat, Grandfather Hoster Tully, and Aunt Lysa Arryn telling them all to come down to King's Landing and bend the knee to their new king, and she'll back in the good books. She grabs a pen. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King's Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert's will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert's heir comes of age. Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned's helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll. Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert's will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei's children are not Robert's and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they've been paid to do, and kill all of Ned's men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. King Robert Baratheon - King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Aside from being king, he's also Ned's lifelong best friend. Oh and now he's dead. Renly Baratheon - King Robert's youngest brother. Lord of Storm's End and Master of Laws. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Support the podcast. It's back to our regularly scheduled programming as we head back to both Cersei and Brienne in our first foray into the second half of AFFC. Specifically, we see Petyr Baelish destroy the Lords Declarant in a political tennis match, Cersei's well-thought out plans (HA!) are crumbling already as Tommen puffs up his chest, Brienne returns to Maidenpool before setting out again with a new squad, and Samwell Tarly swings a mean right hook over in Braavos. Today's chapters are: - Alayne I/Sansa II - Cersei V - Brienne V - Samwell III Hop aboard the Isle for chit chat on how Sansa remembers her name, Tommen's monumental decision to outlaw beets, some great but short enjoyment of the Arya-Sam pairing, and of course, pure unrestrained adoration of the Broken Man speech. All that plus curse words aimed at Randyll Tarly. A lot of them. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa gets into a squabble with Arya which ends with an orange to the face (and to the lap of a silk dress). The sisters are summoned before their father who tells them that he's sending them back to Winterfell for their safety. Sansa is horrified - she wants to stay and marry Joffrey who she insists is nothing like his father. Ned suddenly sees the light. Simon and Mac do too, and they're not afraid to share it with you. Chapter Review: Sansa describes her day at court to Jeyne Poole, critiquing her father's decision not to send Ser Loras Tyrell to defeat the Mountain. Septa Mordane disapproved of Sansa's second guessing, but Petyr Baelish reckons that Ned's decisions could do with a bit of scrutiny. At breakfast, Arya and Sansa fight and end up sent to their rooms. Thereafter, they are summoned to their father's chambers where he announces his intent to send them home. King's Landing is no longer safe. Sansa wants to stay and mother princes and princesses as brave as wolves and proud as lions with her beloved Joffrey. Arya points out that he's a Baratheon stag. Sansa flares up, insisting that he is nothing like his drunken, fat father. Ned is dumbfounded. Joffrey really is nothing like Robert. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and king Robert's closest friend. Sansa Stark - Oldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark, the Hand of the King, and Catelyn Tully. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon, heir to the Iron Throne. Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Jayne Poole - Sansa's best friend. Septa Mordane - Stark girls' tutor in the arts of becoming noblewomen. Can it be true? Are we really a quarter of a way into Feast already? Apparently so, so we'd best get down to business. Today we get our real introduction to Cersei's hilarious rule, Brienne visits Duskendale to learn about the remnants of battles, Jaime and his guilt open up to us even while he improves upon every marker, and we get one of our so-very-rare Sansa chapters as Petyr Baelish shows off his A-game (annoyingly) Today we have: - Cersei II - Jaime I - Brienne II - Sansa I Jump aboard the Isle for chit chat about poor, poor Tommen, Varys knowing secrets about Jaqen, what could have been upon the Trident, memories of Roose Bolton's evil, and how Sansa- somehow- maintains her sense of self even while witnessing Littlefinger's skill. “ I assume you’re here to bend the knee?” Daenerys asks Jon Snow expectantly. Jon Snow replies “I am not.” Season 7 conclusion begins in suspense as Jon Snow and Ser Davos arrive at Dragonstone to meet with Daenerys Targaryen. Upon their arrival, Varys and Melisandre have a conversation about each other’s future in Westeros. “Oh I will return dear spider. One last time. I have to die in this strange country just like you.” Melisandre tells Varys knowingly. Jon and Daenerys converse for the first time and Jon tells her and Tyrion about the army of the dead. They argue and trade facts about history and loyalties with neither backing down. “So many men have tried to kill me, I don't remember all their names. I have been sold like a broodmare. I've been chained and betrayed, raped and defiled. Do you know what kept me standing through all those years in exile? Faith. Not in any gods. Not in myths and legends. In myself. In Daenerys Targaryen.” Daenerys boasts to Jon. Varys interrupts this interaction with grave news about the Greyjoys and the Sand Snakes. At King’s Landing Euron Greyjoy brings Cersei the priceless gift he promised. Euron and Jaime have a less than friendly interaction while Cersei gets her revenge for Myrcella’s death. Cersei meets with Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank of Bravos and they discuss the Lannister. Back at Dragonstone Tyrion and Jon talk of the White Walkers with Jon asking Tyrion if he believes him. “I trust the eyes of an honest man more than I trust what everyone knows.” Tyrion says in response. Jon asks Daenerys to allow him to mine the dragonglass. While in Winterfell, Sansa is growing into her own and making executive decisions as the Lady of Winterfell. Meera brings Bran to Winterfell and Sansa and Bran see each other for the first time since Season 1. Bran tries to describe to Sansa the role of the Three-Eyed Raven in unsettling fashion. In the Citadel, Jorah Mormont has been cured of Grayscale and is ready to return to his Queen. Meanwhile, the Unsullied take Casterly Rock only to find out they were tricked. High Garden falls to Jaime and the Lannister army, Olenna drinks the poison and gives Jaime a confession. Jaime leads his army back to King’s Landing with all of High Gardens’s gold and harvest crops. Meanwhile, Cersei gets an interesting proposition from Tycho. In Winterfell, Petyr Baelish approaches Bran where he finds that even with all of his wits, he can’t fool someone who literally knows everything. Arya arrives in Winterfell for the first time since Season 1 and reunites with her sister and brother, and Bran gives Arya an important gift. Back at Dragonstone, Jon shows Daenerys the dragonglass and some interesting hieroglyphics that provide evidence to the existence of the Night King. Daenerys learns of latest failure at Casterly Rock and is ready to burn it all down. Before she makes a decision, she asks Jon his advice to which he tells her “If you use them to melt castles and burn cities, you’re not different. You’re just more of the same.” In Winterfell, Arya and Brienne have an epic spar while at Dragonstone, and Jon and Theon see each other for the first time since Jon left for the Night’s Watch. Randyll Tarly informs Jaime and Bronn that all of the gold is safely secured in King’s Landing, but that relief is short lived as Daenerys arrives to show them who the real Queen is. Upon her return to Dragonstone, an old knight pledges himself to her once more, and Tyrion devises a plan to make Cersei believe in the threat to the North. In Winterfell, Sansa is tempted by The Northern houses. Tyrion meets with Jaime to convince him to have Cersei agree to armistice, and Ser Davos collects an old friend from Flea Bottom. In the Citadel, Gilly comes across perhaps the most important discovery in Maester Maynards’ records, while Arya in Winterfell makes a shocking discovery of her own. At The Wall, the A-Team of Westeros go beyond to bring back a wight. After dangerous encounters with creatures of the dead, Jon and company catch a wight only to be surrounded by the Night King and his army. Is this the end for them? Or will someone come to save the day? If they do survive, will Cersei have a change of heart when presented the proof or was it all for naught? The Night King adds the most dangerous ally to his army, while in Winterfell, the Stark sisters rid themselves of a dangerous ally of their own. Bran and Sam together fit the final pieces together about Jon’s true lineage, while two relatives are rocking the boat. Meanwhile unbeknownst to anyone except the men holding The Wall at Eastwatch By The Sea, Winter is officially coming to Westeros. Take a dive with the Riddikulus Crew into the conclusion of Season 7 in our 3 and ½ hour special as things begin to come full circle, while other questions are raised. Where does Jon Snow go from here? In the words of Bran Stark “He’s never been a bastard, he’s the heir to the Iron Throne.”
Welcome back to Popcorn Chats! This week, Katie and Michae are back with another ranking episode; this time with characters from one of their favorite shows, Game of Thrones. From God level characters, to bottom of the barrel trash, they rank the folks of Westeros and defend their positions on those rankings. While in agreement with quite a few, there are some key characters that divide them, including one of the main characters that they saved to debate at the end of the episode (spoiler alert: it’s the bastard). Katie shares why she has such a soft spot for Lord Varys, which if you listened to the Hunger Games episode, you might have an idea as to why that is. They also talk about why the women in this show reign supreme over all others with their unmatched power, the Achilles heel of all men on the show, and Michae’s love for Grey Worm. And what do Petyr Baelish and Mr. Bates from Freaky Friday have in common? Well, Katie is gonna tell you. Also, is it just Katie and Michae, or is the Night King kinda sexy? Thanks for listening this week! Tune in next week to hear Katie and Michae discuss “Call Me By Your Name”, featuring the love of Katie’s life (sorry Jack), Timothee Chalamet. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Eddard sits with Grand Maester Pycelle and learns of Jon Arryn's final days. Was Pycelle acting sketchy during that time or doing what he thought best? Jon Arryn shared cryptic parting words and perused an unlikely book. Later Littlefinger gives Ned a gift and shares a revelation that leaves Ned shocked. We jump head-first into it all, and wonder why poison wasn't considered by more.Chapter Review: Eddard "Ned" Stark visits Grand Maester Pycelle's chambers to learn the details of Jon Arryn's death. He also reveals that Cersei wasn't in town when Jon died. Ned takes it all in, but questions just who Pycelle serves. Later, after a quick talk with Arya, Ned meets Petyr Littlefinger Baelish. Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik have made it to King's Landing. They pulled an end-around on Ned and the Royal wheelhouse by taking a ship. Including whether Cat is the worst secret keeper ever.Chapter ReviewCatelyn Stark and her escort Ser Rodrik Cassel have completed their journey from Winterfell to King's Landing . Ser Rodrik goes to the Red Keep to meet with Ser Aron Santager, the king's master-at-arms. While he's gone Cat is summoned to Petyr Baelish, a childhood friend. Seems both he and Master of Whisperers Lord Varys know that she's here. When she shows them the dagger, Petyr knows it immediately. Eliana and Chloe embark on a journey through each character's POV in ASOIAF, starting with everyone's favorite honorable patriarch: Eddard Stark. Meredith Geddes and Jeremy Baker rewatch Game of Thrones from the beginning. In King's Landing, Ned tells Cersei he knows all of her children are Jaime's. They soon learn that Robert has been critically wounded by a boar while hunting. A dying Robert names Ned as the "Protector of the Realm" to rule until Joffrey reaches the legal age. Ned sends a message to Stannis, Robert's brother, intending to enthrone him since Robert has no true legal heirs. Ned tells Petyr Baelish about his plan and asks him to gain the loyalty of the City Watch, the only force capable of overpowering Lannister forces loyal to Cersei. After Robert's death, Ned, Baelish and the City Watch confront Cersei and Joffrey in the throne room, where Baelish and the City Watch betray Ned and attack his men. At the Wall, Ned's younger brother Benjen goes missing during a foray to the north, beyond the Wall. Snow and Tarly are picked as stewards, with Jon assigned to Lord Commander Mormont. The stewards swear their loyalties to the Night's Watch. In Essos, Robert's assassin is captured before he can poison Daenerys. Drogo vows to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and give that realm to his son. He starts marching towards Westeros.

After more than a year of being on hiatus, it's time to rally the realm. The Cast Beyond the Wall has returned with a full preview of season 7! Caleb is re-joined by Austin and Daniel to look back at last year's greatest hits before making their predictions of the twists, backstabbings, and deaths ahead in Game of Thrones season 7. The podcast kicks the conversation off by reflecting on the treachery going on in the north. Jon Snow may have been declared the new King in the North, but Sansa and Petyr Baelish have other ideas about who should actually rule the seven kingdoms. With Bran and Arya both making their way to Winterfell, it appears there may be a happy moment for the star family yet. South in King's Landing, Cersei has just taken the crown after blowing up all of her enemies including Queen Margery in Sept with wildfire. She continues to have Jamie standing uncomfortably by her side as she waits for the inevitable encounter from Daenerys and her legions. To close out the conversation, The Cast Beyond the Wall makes their big predictions about who dies in this incredibly high stakes game. They also announce this year's special Fantasy League put on by The Verge. This season your favorite Game of Thrones podcast is going big in ways you won't forget. Andrew and Manu officially reach episode 3, "Lord Snow," where Ned Stark and company arrive in King's Landing, or as Ned previously referred to it, "that rat's nest they call a capital." Ned has to endure some of his least favorite parts of the rat's nest immediately, as Jaime Lannister gives him shit and he meets the Small Council, allowing the audience to be introduced to Petyr Baelish, Varys, Renly Baratheon, and Maester Pycelle. (At least Ned likes Renly.) Anyway, there are a lot of mini-character profiles in here, so away we go. iTunes link

Game of Thrones never fails to have an eventful episode 9 and season 6's The Battle of the Bastards was no exception. On this week's The Cast Beyond the Wall, Daniel, Austin, and myself break down the highly anticipated battle sequence and whether or not it lives up to some of the other series climactic battles. Jon Snow has seen white walkers at Hardhome, defended the Wall outmatched a hundred to one, and even been brought back from the dead, but that doesn't make him any less a Stark. Leading up to the Battle, Jon scrapes together a strategy and ignores Sansa's advice not to go into battle. Sansa on the other hand continues to withhold the crucial info about Petyr Baelish's armies from the Eerie. Have Ramsey and Littlefinger compromised the elder Stark or was this just a rookie mistake? Despite the title of the episode, this week also featured the biggest set piece we've ever seen in Mereen. Danerys rides Drogon and decimates entire ships from The Masters' fleet while Dario leads a full fledged ground assault with the Dothraki horde. Following the flawless victory, Theon and Yara Greyjoy arrive and request independence for the Iron Islands if they support her claim. We take a moment to discuss the issues with the season's continued abbreviation, particularly as it relates to Mereen. Has Dany's time to cross the Narrow Sea FINALLY come? For the sake of my sanity, let's hope so. The Battle of the Bastards may contain not just one, but two of the finest action set pieces the series has ever seen, but I make the case that it lacks the magical secret sauce that makes Game of Thrones special. Austin and Daniel on the other hand were enamored by the undeniably impressive spectacle.
Game of Thrones season 6 continues to sail its Greyjoy ships full speed ahead in this week's episode Book of the Stranger. Every minute of this episode is packed tight with some of the very best Game of Thrones and The Cast Beyond the Wall brings the fire and the analysis to this week's particularly eventful episode. This week, the Cast is joined by one the co-founders of GoodTrash Media and host of The Film Syllabus, Alexandra Bohannon. Book of the Stranger featured many crowd pleasing moments, but none as long awaited or emotional as the first Stark Reunion. We laughed, we cried, and somewhere George RR Martin felt a deep disturbance in his source material(probably). At long last, Daniel's dreams of whimsey and Stark victory seemed within grasp right before the rest of the team shuts him down by talking the rather unfortunate demise of Osha at the hands of Ramsey. Austin coins the term "Post-Martinism" as we discuss the unusually optimistic turn of events in nearly every storyline this week. After being MIA for more than five episodes, Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish returns and it looks like he's bringing his army from the Eerie into the fold. After experiencing a moment of uncharacteristic fanboy excited, I discuss what his move could mean for the wars to come. If all of the other heartwarming cheer moments weren't enough for you, Daenerys finally returned to form by reminding us all why she doesn't need dragons, unsullied, or knight's to be the epic leader that has been promised. Whether its religious zealotry or Game of Thrones failure to the LGBTQ characters, The Cast Beyond the Wall has this an every episode covered. What did you think of Book of the Stranger? Cenk and Ben sit down and discuss if Dick Cheney roots for Petyr Baelish in Game of Thrones, and how Sepp Blatter and Roger Goodell compare. Ben theorizes that sometimes backroom deals are necessary to get things done in government. Cenk counters with the evils of Chris Christie's backroom dealings. The FIFA arrests are explored and why the FIFA executives should be scared. How does familiarity of newsmakers effect objective journalism? Cenk has no interest in Gwyneth Paltrow's social club. Who was more influential, Kramer or George Costanza? Cenk explains how Julia Louis-Dreyfus earned her fortune and Jamie Dimon did not. The guys argue: Is it blow-dryed, or blown-dry? How important is "happy wife, happy life." Finally, Cenk taught his son the importance of making power rankings.
Johnny and Alexandra tackle the episode's "controversial" ending, how Arya's doing in drama school and her visit to the Cave of Faces, Petyr Baelish's master plan, and, of course, "The Great Dornish Caper!" starring our new favorite couple, Bronn and Jaime. First one to send a B/J slash fic our way wins a shoutout! Also, there is much, much Scooby Doo to be had this week. You'll see.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Just a few weeks ago, your Dark Discussions co-hosts recorded a marathon episode talking all about season four of Game of Thrones. As a result the recording was broken out into a two part episode with Episode 177 discussing the character arcs of Daenerys Targaryen and Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, among others. But we had so much more to discuss. Each of us had our own opinions on the other story lines. This episode focuses on not only the tales of Jon Snow, his major battle, and growth at the Wall, but also specific events that were major plot points for not only season four but also the series as a whole. Included is our take on the Purple Wedding, what transpires there, as well as some surprises that revolve Petyr Baelish and all the way to pre-dating the events in the show! Further discussion is about Bran and the tree; what is going to happen to Tyrion and all the Lannisters; further curiosity on what's going on up North with Stannis and the Boltons. We also give some predictions on what's going to happen in the future. Will the show veer off and diverge from the books? Will new characters be introduced or will the show runners choose to merge them? Here us out before the start of season five. And remember, the night is dark and full of terrors. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
After completely whiffing on the last chapter in A Storm of Swords, Ivan and Red finish up the Brienne chapter they began last episode before looping back around to the last chapter in A Storm of Swords, Sansa VII. They discuss The Patriarchy, raw eggs, Rivers Cuomo, Fish Wife vs Salt Wife, Ivan’s preferred food preparation technique, and Petyr Baelish’s favorite cat.
Jaime reminds The Kingsguard who’s in charge and Petyr Baelish gets showy with his mastery of The Game of Thrones in Jaime VIII (Hardback page 750/Paperback page 912) in George R.R. Martin’s “A Storm of Swords”. Ivan and Red discuss Ravens from the Bannermen, books vs toilet paper, Stranger in a Strange Land, Ser Barristan’s advanced age, Jaime’s professional pride, Ser Boros missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity, Dragons vs. Dinosaurs, Petyr Baelish and Wikipedia etiquette, underestimating Cersei, strong seed, Lysa’s wedding in a box, and Ser Egan’s revenge.
Looking at Sansa Stark, yolkboy and Lady Gwyn analyse Sansa's arc and theorise on the direction it might be taking. Using specially arranged readings to present key sections, we discuss themes of mercy and identity as well as Sansa's connection to Sandor Clegane, her sister Arya and Petyr Baelish. We also offer an original theory regarding Sandor's bloody kingsguard cloak, and welcome special guest brashcandy, representing the Sansa: From Pawn to Player project. Music from the fandom and more! MOCK YEAH ING YEAH BIRD YEAH! That's exactly how Petyr Baelish announces himself, in his head. Externally, to the surprise of absolutely no-one, he is one creepy motha ucka, a poster-boy for Westeros' Stranger Danger campaign. But does Sansa pay attention? Does she hell. Also this time out, a positive feast of plot, featuring dramatic deaths left right and centre, and we're right up with it, sword hands a-go-go. This is the end of our coverage of A Song of Ice and Fire (till next time), and it's been an epic haul through this epic world. We're having a bit of a break for the next few weeks, but we'll be back like a bullet with Watchmen before you know it. As ever, get in touch and tell us what you think about all thiz shiz: sharkliveroilpodcast@gmail.com, or @sharkliveroil on twitter. Yeah? Yeah!
