Send us Fan MailArya gets her first assignment as an assassin for the House of Black and White. She also gets a new face, that of a little girl who had been badly beaten. After a successful mission, Arya is promoted to Acolyte and given her first apprenticeship. Simon and Mackelly decide to stop biting their coins.Chapter Review:Arya Stark witnesses a meeting of priests of the House of Black and White. When the meeting ends, one of the men talks with her. He accuses her of being too soft, selfish, and proud to be one of them. However, in the end, he gives her an assignment. She is to kill a ship insurer. To scope out her target she will resume the role of Cat of the Canals.While selling her cockles and watching her mark, she notices that he bites every coin he receives. A plan comes to her as to how best to deliver him the “gift.” The Kindly Man takes her deep into the heart of the temple where the faces are stored. He removes Arya's face and replaces it with that of a girl who had been beaten by her father to the point of disfigurement. From her perspective, Arya can't tell the difference. However, the Kindly Man assures her that nobody who sees her face will soon forget it.The next day Arya waits for a man to walk by on his way to pay the ship insurer. She cuts his purse and grabs a handful of coins. The man turns to stop her and coins spill to the ground. Arya runs and hides for a while. When she returns to the House of Black and White, she tells the Kindly Man that she replaced one of the man's coins with one she had poisoned. When her target receives the payment he will bite the coin, and at some point later that day his heart will give out. The Kindly Man tells her she might not be hopeless after all. He gives her the robe of an acolyte, but tells her not to get too comfortable in it. Send us a textTheon watches as a child's body is laid before Lord Roose instigating in-fighting in the castle. Roose calls for battle preparations against Stannis. Theon is called into duty to smuggle Arya out of Winterfell. All goes well, until it doesn't. Mackelly and Simon hope for a soft landing.Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy sits at the back of the Great Hall of Winterfell, alongside the bard Abel and some of his women. Ser Hosteen Frey bursts through the doors with Little Walder's dead body in his arms and lays him below the dais. A bloody Big Walder and several knights accompany Hosteen. Big Walder says Little Walder went looking for a man who owed him coin from dicing, and it was the Manderlys who taught him the game. Fighting breaks out between the Freys and Manderlys, leaving Lord Wyman Manderly bleeding and several men dead.Lord Roose announces that they will ride out against Stannis, and the Freys and Manderlys will lead the charge. Abel's women say that now is the time to enact their plan. Theon meets the women in the godswood. They're all dressed as servants. After filling buckets of hot water, they gain entrance to Lady Arya's room. Theon coaxes Jeyne, who almost reveals she's not Arya, into cooperating. She trades clothing with a washerwoman, who remains behind to keep the numbers accurate, and they walk Jeyne out of the keep.Several of the women go off to find Abel and two go with Theon and Jeyne. When the women kill two guards, Jeyne lets out a scream, which brings more guards. One woman stays behind to hold them off, the other takes Theon and Jeyne up the stairs of the outer wall, only to realize she doesn't have the rope to repel down. When she is killed by a crossbow bolt and Theon and Jeyne are surrounded, Theon grabs Jeyne and they jump off the wall.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Reek - Broken shell of Theon Greyjoy.Ramsay Bolton - Newly legitimized son of Roose Bolton. Send us a textTheon continues to wander Winterfell. A fact that is noted when men start being found murdered. His worthlessness proves to be a sufficiently strong alibi. He is once again propositioned by Abel's women. Simon and Mackelly consult their IP lawyers.Chapter Review:Theon Greyjoy continues to haunt Winterfell, and Winterfell returns the favor. The blizzard rages on, making the living conditions increasingly intolerable. Ropes are strung between the buildings to prevent people from getting lost. Men start turning up dead. The first couple are explained away as accidents, but the third is clearly murder. Furthermore, the newly constructed stable collapses. The great hall, already redolent of men and dogs, is now used to house the displaced horses. Another of Abel's women tries to befriend Theon, but he still senses a Ramsay trap and avoids her. He's dragged before Lord Roose Bolton, as he's one of the few people who wanders the whole castle, and therefore has the opportunity (and let's be honest, the motive) to sabotage the Bolton cause. His demeanor and physical decrepitude end any suspicion. A warhorn appears to herald Stannis' arrival and cause panic within the Walls. Theon, knowing that for him Stannis does not represent salvation, goes to pray in the godswood. There he is again haunted by his crimes, hearing his name and seeing Bran's face in the heart tree. Abel's women again accost him. Mackelly and Simon feel their pupils dilate.Chapter Review:Arya Stark's education continues apace in the House of Black and White. Without her sight she's developing her four other senses. In addition, she's learning languages, potions, and poisons. More painfully she's learning how to defend herself against silent assailants in the dark. It's not going well. Her duties involve locating and helping prepare the night's corpses. She tries to infer the stories of the dead from the touch of their skin; disease, wounds, old age, and so on. In the evening she begs in the city's watering holes and is charged to return with three knew pieces of information. She's acquired a friendly cat through whom she can, when she stills her mind, see the people she's spying on.When the Kindly Man asks her for her new intelligence, she tells him that she's figured out that it is him who's been attacking her in the dark. She hits him on the knuckles with her staff. He's amazed that she's figured it out, not noticing the cat prowling the rafters. Jon avoids bloodshed and the people (and giant) are invited to return to the Wall under their protection. They do - they don't have much choice. Simon and Mackelly sift through the flames and try not to get burned.Chapter Review:Melisandre searches the flames for Stannis and the girl on a dying horse. She doesn't find her king or the girl but does see much else, including omens of Jon Snow. She reflects on her past and the dangers of misinterpreting prophecy.She sends for Rattleshirt to rescue the girl she insists is Arya Stark. One of her earlier predictions to Jon comes to fruition, as three rangers' heads are found on spikes north of the Wall. Jon asks her to look for the other six men in her flames and she asks him to attend her in her chambers. There Jon is stunned to find Rattleshirt. Melisandre tells Jon that Rattleshirt is the answer to Jon's needs. He can rescue Arya while Jon stays at Castle Black and fulfills his Night's Watch vows. Jon will not have this murderer anywhere near his sister. Melisandre is left with no choice. She removes the glamor and Rattleshirt transforms into Mance Rayder.Melisandre admits the man who burned earlier was Rattleshirt glamored as Mance. She reiterates that Mance is Jon's best bet to save Arya. He apologizes for the disrespect that Davos was shown. But while the Lannister, Frey, and Bolton alliance held his remaining son Wylis, he was forced to play along. But the feast that can be heard is to welcome the heir home - and Lord Wyman can let the mask slip a little. A ruse was pulled, a criminal was made to look like Davos and executed - his head and hands were displayed above the walls, heavily tarred and distorted with an onion in the mouth.Davos is ready to seal the alliance between Stannis and the Manderlys. But lord Wyman's not there yet - the Bolton's are cementing their claim to the North by marrying Arya Stark, but courtesy of Theon's former squire Wex, they know where Rickon Stark is. One of those nine is Ser Alliser Thorne, who is not happy about the assignment. He tells Jon that if he dies by an Other's blade, he'll be back for Jon as a wight. Afterward in the yard, Jon spars with three green recruits at once, easily defeating them. Rattleshirt is unimpressed and challenges Jon to fight a real man. When the fight begins, Jon is surprised by Rattleshirt's prowess with a sword. Eventually, the wildling has to be dragged off Jon.Clydas interrupts with a letter from Barrowtown bearing the seal of House Bolton. Warden of the North Roose Bolton has returned and requires fealty from the lords of the kingdom. He also wishes for their attendance to celebrate the marriage of his son Ramsay to… Arya Stark. Jon is stunned. He thought his sister died in King's Landing.That evening he runs into Melisandre alone in the yard. She foretells him that his sister Arya will arrive at Castle Black, fleeing her forced marriage. She then bonds with Ghost, much to Jon's surprise. She tells Jon that three of the rangers he sent north will not survive. Jon will only find their eyeless heads. The future occupant had the misfortune to be in Saltpans when the purported Hound's raid took place.The Elder Brother of the Isle welcomes them and asks that septon Meribald hear confessions before he leaves. He tells them news from Saltpans. How the citizenry were left to their fate when Ser Quincy Cox barred the doors to his keep. Furthermore he has information for Brienne.He met the dying Sandor Clegane by the roadside and, while he could not give him the mercy he sought, he held the Hound as he died. He buried him and left his helmet to mark his grave. Obviously someone picked it up and wore it in Saltpans. Mackelly and Simon join her peregrination.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth heads back to Maidenpool, no nearer finding Sansa. Ser Hyle Hunt brings the heads of Shagwell, Timeon, and Pyg with them for Lord Tarly to display on the walls of Maidenpool. He also brings back a swarm of flies.The reception in Maidenpool is no warmer than it was last time. Tarly is impressed, but unmoved, by news that Brienne dispatched the Bloody Mummers single-handedly. He reiterates his demand for her to give up her cos-play. She refuses. She's determined to follow the only lead she has - the Stark girl was seen traveling with Sandor Clegane. Tarly gives her leave to hunt the Hound, he's pillaging the environs and the frustrated lord would love to see him defeated.Ser Hyle leaves Tarly's service to travel with Brienne. She's not happy about that. He brings along a Septon Meribald who continually travels a circuit through the Riverlands, spreading the word of the Faith of the Seven, and some hard-to-get food and supplies. He talks of the plight of the young men dragged into wars and how their fall into outlawry should be considered in the light of what has happened to them. Send us a Text Message.Arya acts as a servant in the House of Black and White. Despite her claims, she still can't shake her identity as Arya Stark. She decides to shed her worldly possessions, all except Needle, earning her a promotion to acolyte. Armed with a smattering of Braavosi, she's next to go out into the city and sell seafood. Mackelly and Simon ask for a menu.Chapter Review:Arya Stark is settling into life as a servant in the House of Black and White. When asked by the Kindly Man who she is, Arya dutifully says “no one.” Invariably, the Kindly Man says she lies. The Kindly Man tells her she doesn't have to stay here. He can place her in other environments she'd find more suitable or put her on a ship back to Westeros. Arya is insistent she wants to remain in the House of Black and White.One day the Kindly Man tells her she must rid herself of her worldly possessions, as they belong to Arya of House Stark. That night, Arya takes them all to the canal and throws them in. She hesitates when it's time to toss Needle. She thinks of the remarkable twist of fate that brought the sword back to her after it had been stolen, and decides that the Old Gods wanted her to have it. Therefore, she hides it under a cobblestone outside of the temple.Although she never told the Kindly Man of her actions, he seemed to know. The next day he tells her the history of the religion of the Many-Faced God. She's then given the robes of an acolyte. He also tasks Arya with learning Braavosi and teaching the Waif the Common Tongue. The pair practice by showing each other items and saying the word. In an attempt to help Arya lie better, the pair begin playing a lying game. The Waif seems to know when Arya is lying, but Arya just guesses. Eventually, the Kindly Man feels that Arya's grasp of Braavosi is good enough for her to go out into the city. She will sell seafood for a man, but she needs a new name. They decide on Cat. Ser Hyle Hunt offers to help bury a body. Simon and Mackelly survey the damage.Chapter Review:Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne follow Nimble Dick Crabb toward The Whispers, where he claims to have sent a fool and two girls. They were looking for discreet passage across the Narrow Sea, and the map purportedly took them to where smugglers would lend them a hand.Brienne is very untrusting of Dick, and he doesn't help his cause when she catches him rummaging through her saddle bags. They get to comparing the heroes of their homelands. It sounds like it would have been quite the battle. Pod notices that they are being followed, again.At the Whispers, they find signs of life. Brienne arms Dick, but Shagwell, Timeon, and Pyg surprise them. Shagwell kills Dick for tricking them into coming here. The three try to distract her with news from the Riverlands - Sandor Clegane has captured and rides with the Stark girl. Despite the news, Brienne dispatches Pyg. A rock hits Shagwell in the face and she is able to end Timeon with barely a scratch. She makes Shagwell dig a grave for Dick. As she buries him, Shagwell attacks her, she stabs him mercilessly to death. Ser Hyle Hunt arrives, he's been charged by Lord Randyl Tarly with keeping an eye on Brienne, in case she finds Sansa.
