Few members of the Senedd are near-universally respected by those of all political persuasions (and none) in the way that Kirsty Williams is. From being an enthusiastic campaigner for devolution in the 1990s, Kirsty became a much-admired constituency AM/MS for 22 years representing Brecon and Radnor including a spell leading the Welsh Liberal Democrats and finishing her Senedd career with a term as Education Minister in the Welsh Government 2016-2021. In the course of her time in frontline politics, Kirsty was also in pivotal roles during key moments in recent democratic history. She was one of the Liberal Democrat opponents to the proposed Plaid Cymru-Conservative-Liberal Democrat 'Rainbow Coalition' in 2007 and she was leader of the party as, across the border, Nick Clegg led the Lib Dems into a coalition with David Cameron's Conservatives. Kirsty was also the pivotal vote back in 2016 that re-nominated Carwyn Jones as First Minister after dramatic scenes where the Conservatives and UKIP (!) backed Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood to take the role. So, who better to reflect on 25 years since Wales voted for devolution, the present political climate and, in her capacity as member of the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales, ambitions for the future of Welsh politics? We attempt to bring you up to speed with the concerns being raised over the protection of EU citizens' rights, we'll be joined by former SNP MSP Christian Allard. The Scottish Green Party's conference was in Edinburgh last week, under the banner of “leading the change” - Scotland's (other) pro-independence party claimed it was behind more than a few major policies implemented by the SNP government. As the Israeli Government announces plans to roll out thousands of new settlement homes in the occupied west bank - we ask what's prompted this aggressive shift in gears, as well as where it leaves the process towards peace between Israel and Palestinians. The Welsh pro independence party Plaid Cymru met in Caernarfon for their conference last week, we talk to party leader Leanne Wood. Donald Trump has faced criticism this week from two republican senators, but given his low approval ratings and public opinion - we ask if this headline should really be - Donald Trump has faced criticism from only two republican senators. And what happens when the man behind landmark comedy series like The Day Today, Alan Partridge and The Thick of It, turns his hand to an altogether darker subject matter? Armando Iannucci's latest film offering has been met with a mixture of praise and skepticism, and Russia's present day communist party want it banned - we'll be taking a look at ‘The Death of Stalin'.

Producer: Gemma Newby.
Leanne Wood, leader of Plaid Cymru, joins the IWA's Jess Blair to discuss the new powers for Wales announced by the UK Government. Let us know what you think on iwaconvention.co.uk or #IWAConvention
