In this month's episode of Fabulous Folklore Presents, I'm talking to Russ Williams, the author of Where the Folk: A Welsh Folklore Road Trip. Russ grew up in Caernarfon in North Wales, where he was raised on Welsh stories, like the one about a mountain that would send you mad or turn you into a gifted poet if you camped out on it, or the one about the lost civilization drowned by the sea, and the one about the bottomless lake leading down to the Welsh Otherworld. He now lives in Cardiff. In this chat, we get into the origin story of the Devil's Bridge legend, we talk about whether stories can ever truly be claimed by one place, and an eccentric figure from Welsh history who has passed into legend. Croeso i Gymru - Willkommen in Wales! Matthias Schuch war für uns in Wales unterwegs.
"The field recording resonated with me as the theme is about families who have moved around the world and come together to meet and talk about food, farms and gardens. I was born in the US and grew up near Chicago where my father's family settled from Germany in 1911. "I have cousins in Germany and I now live in Wales, with a Welsh husband. My older daughter, Ellen, was born in Scotland, but now lives in Wales and she just had a baby in November so I have included recordings of us at a Welsh market in Talysarn, Wales, UK and Ellen reading a story in Welsh to her daughter Nimue, in Caernarfon. Nimue is 6 months old and sings and gurgles in response. "I love the weaving of the different conversations, laughing and relaxed. The footsteps of me in the garden denote the the small steps we take to travel the world and come together with food, conversation and love. I used the original recording without any effects and just shortened the length. All my sounds were recorded on a TASCAM DR-05 including the Kawai ES110 piano, and then mixed using Audacity. Duren family conversation reimagined by Amy Sterly. Part of the Migration Sounds project, the world's first collection of the sounds of human migration. Gyda'r Gymdeithas Bel-droed yn rhedeg arolwg o'r gynghrair yng Nghymru, sut mae perthynas yr wyth clwb gyda'r system ddomestig yng Nghymru am newid yn y dyfodol? In a special series by the Sgorio podcast we trace the history of our national league, and the eight clubs that were called to return to Wales in 1992. We will hear from the fans and players who were there at the time, we will follow the story of the eight clubs up to this day, and ask what the future holds in store. 30 years have passed since the start of the League of Wales, with the Irate Eight clubs having all followed different paths. The FAW is currently reviewing the league, so how is the relationship of the eight clubs with the domestic system in Wales likely to change in the future? Thanks to all the contributors to the series for their time - this is their story.
Join Emmet Kennedy and Timeform's Lewis Tomlinson as they delve into a classic weekend of horse racing at Epsom and Chantilly. The Betfred Derby saw Auguste Rodin stage an incredible comeback, showcasing his brilliance, we explore the significance of this victory, speculate on his future targets, and ponder whether he will continue racing at the age of four. They also analyze the prospects of King Of Steel, White Birch, The Foxes, Sprewell, Passenger, and Military Order and their respective targets. The Oaks at Epsom witnessed Soul Sister triumph, securing John Gosden's yard their fourth victory in ten years. Furthermore, this win marked Frankie Dettori's final ride in the race. Emmet and Lewis discuss the future plans for this daughter of Frankel, including the possibility of Savethelastdance overturning the form on softer ground. Lewis shares an intriguing theory on the ideal target for Aidan O'Brien's filly, while the duo also explores the potential options for Caernarfon, trained by Jack Channon. Across the English Channel, Ace Impact delivered a spectacular performance in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club. Emmet and Lewis dissect his performance and compare him to the winners of the Derby and Oaks. Additionally, they examine Emily Upjohn's standout display in the Coronation Cup and deliberate on her next steps, including the prospect of winning a Group 1 over 10f. The conversation then shifts towards international targets for Point Lonsdale and the reasoning behind Westover potentially going up in trip. Finally, the hosts engage in a lively discussion about which of the four Group 1 winners they would back in the highly anticipated Arc. Tune in to The Final Furlong for all the thrilling insights and analysis on these classic races and their implications for the future of horse racing. Learn more about your ad choices. Shearing season is upon us but with the price of wool in decline in recent years, the challenge is to find a sustainable use for this natural product. This week, on Country Focus look at Gwnaed a Gwlan - the Made with Wool project, which is finding innovative ways of using Welsh wool and discovering it's potential to revitalise the rural economy. It all starts with the raw product and Caroline Evans first meets with the Williams family at Parlla Isaf Farm in Rhoslefain, in Gwynedd. From there it's on to the Wool Testing Authority in Caernarfon, which is offering farmers the chance to get their wool tested and the potential it has. Finally we discover some of the innovative uses being developed at Bangor University BioComposites Centre. Menter Môn is calling on farmers to get involved!

This week we are diving into the world of Irish Crochet Lace and Welsh blankets. Two subjects that seem quite unrelated, but can be united by the fact that they are old crafts that were done to stay alive. There are still some ways to support the weavers in Wales, so we added some of those links down below! Definitely worth checking out; hand-crafting used to keep people alive, now we need to keep hand-crafting alive :). This week we celebrate the best of non-league. First up, after a year out of the dugout, one of Non-league's finest managers is back… ironically in the same dugout he last left. Former Bromley boss Neil Smith is back as a gaffer, this time for groundsharers Cray Wanderers as they aim to stay in Step 3. A tough 6 games await and Smudger can't wait. After a brief break during the pandemic, Non League Day returns this weekend. Founder James Doe explains why he thinks non-league is on the rise and what some clubs have in their plans to encourage fans this weekend. Also returning from a pandemic break is the England C team. Without direct help from the FA, the National and Trident Leagues have helped fund the return of the England non-league team, lead by Paul Fairclough once again. The manager has helped light the careers of many over the years and he's keen to keep up that record as his side prepare to face Wales C in Caernarfon on Wednesday. Rounding off the show, Executive Editor at the Non League Paper Jon Couch, is in the chair to provide a round-up of the week's news and what we can expect to read in the weekend's edition.

It's Episode 50 and oh my - I have quite the episode for you all this week! Today, I speak with the brilliant Sara McKee, who is an art historian and gallerist based in Caernarfon in Wales. After studying Art History at University Sara 'got herself real Job' in the advertising and marketing world and soon enough made a name for herself in the industry. It wasn't until the tragic death of her husband, however, that Sara decided to return to her first love - Art History. Fast forward 10 years Sara now runs Life: Full Colour, a gallery dedicated to supporting both artists and the community in where it is based. In this episode, Sara and I discuss the importance of creativity, why it is never too late for a career in the art world and why we should all be living our lives in Full Colour. A beautiful episode that will uplift and inspire. Thank you, Sara - it was a pleasure. Enjoy all! Jo
