Experts who believe in the “food is medicine” concept say recent decisions made in Washington could have a devastating effect. Dr. Hilary Seligman, a nationally recognized expert on food insecurity and health outcomes at the University of California San Francisco, spoke to “Conversations on Health Care.” The interview highlighted that cutbacks to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are projected to reduce federal spending by $186 billion over the next decade. She believes this could result in more people getting sicker and then ending up in emergency departments with severe conditions.Yet Dr. Seligman also sees some rays of optimism. “This administration has done a really deep dive into chronic disease. There is a desire to help make the population of the U.S. healthier again. And there is an interest in supporting better dietary intake. The challenge is to amplify those efforts in a way that is based in science, that is based in evidence and that will support everyone in the U.S. equally. That really is the opportunity that we have,” she told hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Daily Soap Opera Spoilers by Soap Dirt (GH, Y&R, B&B, and DOOL)
Click to Subscribe: https://bit.ly/Youtube-Subscribe-SoapDirt Days of our Lives sees Salem's University Hospital is in a state of unrest, led by Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans), thanks to the controversial management style of EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel). EJ's cost-cutting measures have everyone up in arms, including Kayla's daughter Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Klein). Things may have been different if Xander Kiriakis (Paul Telfer) had been able to take control, but his arrest at the time of the vote led to EJ's victory. The mystery of EJ's funding and interest in the hospital is a topic of discussion for Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) and Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord), as it doesn't seem to be a profitable venture on the NBC Peacock soap opera. DOOL sees the town of Salem is preparing for the opening of the Doctor Tom Horton Free clinic, a response to EJ's hospital management. Kayla Brady is set to host the inaugural party, raising questions about whether Salem needs a free clinic due to EJ's drastic budget cuts. Days of our Lives sees EJ's henchwoman Rita Lesley (Maggie Carney) is causing more trouble, cutting costs on essentials like coffee and fresh food. EJ's lack of attention to the hospital, distracted by Johnny DiMera's (Carson Boatman) trial, could lead to an uprising from the disgruntled hospital staff and patients, possibly led by Kayla Brady herself. The grand opening of the Doctor Tom Horton Free clinic could see a mass exodus of doctors from the hospital to the new clinic. A former Finance Minister says cutbacks to public spending need to be seen in context. Finance Minister Nicola Willis has confirmed a drastic cut to the operating allowance in next month's Budget, from $2.4 billion to $1.3 billion. There will be no new funding for most Government departments, with the focus being on priority areas and paying off debt. Steven Joyce told Mike Hosking there's still scope to reduce spending. He says Government spending has doubled in the past eight years while inflation has only gone up about 30% in the same time. Joyce is also saying there's growing public appetite for more public sector restraint. The Government's ruling out giving most departments any additional funding in the next Budget, but Joyce says reaching that target will depend a lot on the international economy. However, he told Hosking there are still lots of changes that can be made to bring down government spending. Joyce says making those changes requires a bit of work and requires ministers having a good political radar and knowing what can't be cut. Tom welcomes back Lawrence Lepard from Equity Management Associates to discuss the current economic macro picture, including rising inflation and potential economic depression despite subdued market crashes. Lepard expresses skepticism towards government statistics suggesting a lack of real growth since 2008 and warns of risks for investors holding traditional assets due to high stock valuations caused by the Federal Reserve's policies like zero interest rates and quantitative easing. The conversation then shifts into the importance of liquidity in driving the stock market and the potential implications for the bond market and US federal government spending. Lepard expresses concern about a potential debt doom loop as rising interest rates could result in yield curve control, leading to inflation. They also discuss Trump's economic policies and the potential impact on the U.S. dollar. They further debate the current state of inflation and its future developments, with Lepard predicting another wave due to increased government spending. Larry discusses the underperformance of miners in both gold and Bitcoin markets and the shift towards gold as a reserve currency due to mistrust in the US dollar's stability.
