On the show this week we’ve got Gerry Fahy and Andrew Quinn with the story of the PAT Group and PAT Fintech, the Irish opportunity with the growth of fintech and regtech, achieving product-market fit in learning and education, and teaching the way you would have loved to have been taught. Gerry Fahy is the founder of the PAT Group, who are at the forefront of online education and digitally enhanced learning in Ireland. Through Gerry’s origin story, his launching of PAT in 2017, and Andrew Quinn joining to head up PAT Fintech in 2020, we explore continuous learning and education as critical components of Ireland’s ambition to become a global center of excellence for fintech and regtech. HIGHLIGHTS: On one of Gerry’s earliest thoughts: “It struck me that we should be embracing technology as a medium of delivery. Should learners have to fight the traffic and come into a classroom tired after a hard day? Shouldn’t they actually consume their education, training and skills digitally?” On Gerry’s inspiration to launch PAT: “It was governed by a conviction that the market hadn't changed very much from the chalk and talk of the late eighties, right up to the mid-teens. It was still a classroom centric delivery platform.” On an insight from a chat on the sideline of his kid’s football game: “If you don't like change, you’lllike being irrelevant even less.” On the Irish industry-level opportunity conveyed to Gerry by a former student, pre-Brexit: “In a post-Brexit environment, Ireland is the only remaining English speaking country within the EU. There will be fallout in London with the displacement of financial services, and some of them will migrate to the continent, but some will come to Ireland. We needed to plan for that and build a talent pipeline for that. Fintech, regtech and cybersecurity are going to be the major growth areas in financial services. That was the catalyst for PAT to adapt to where the market was going.” On solving adjacent problems in learning and education to respond to the opportunity: “We’ve added the whole aspect of compliance in a fintech environment, money laundering in a fintech environment, data protection, cybersecurity, regtech and data analytics - the whole suite of solutions that you bring into a potential customer.” On what’s at the core of Andrew’s beliefs about learning and education: “It’s all about demystification - you need to break it down into a language that people can understand. Let them go down the rabbit hole, encourage people's curiosity, get them to really believe in their own potential.” LINKS: Episode title inspired by ‘Lot to Learn’ by Luke Christopher Leave a review on Apple Podcasts | Podchaser Subscribe on Apple Podcasts | Spotify| Google| Overcast Check out our MoneyNeverSleeps website Subscribe to our newsletter on Substack Follow us on Twitter Podcast| Twitter Pete| Twitter Eoin Get in touch at info@moneyneversleeps.ie --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/moneyneversleeps/support

“How are you doing mentally and physically through your open-to-conceive journey?” This is a really great question we received recently when we did one of those fun Instagram story “what questions do you have for us?” things. And we thought it was appropriate timing to bring this onto the podcast and have a followup to our first conversation that we put out in September 2020, talking about our conception journey and planning for a second baby. Check out that episode (293) if you haven’t already. In this episode we’re still bringing the vulnerability and transparency, along with some things we’ve learned and grown from since September and even earlier back to when we originally embarked on this process. We describe our highs and our lows and all that comes up for us as a couple and individually. How we’re feeling as we near a 1 year mark of “open to conceive,” and what interventions we’d consider. Then we address some fresh and even real-time unpacking of some things we don’t fully agree on, and how we move through that in order to stay intimately connected in our partnership. It’s certainly a juicy one! Feel free to contact us at hello[at]diahpodcast[dot]com with any followup questions or feedback! We thought locking up data and demanding a ransom to decrypt it was bad. But ransomware criminals have stooped even lower and now, threats of public data exposure on top of multimillion-dollar ransoms are routine tactics. What's next? Where's ransomware going in 2021? Joining us to give his take is F-Secure's chief research officer and CISO MAG's Cybersecurity Person of the Year 2020, Mikko Hypponen. Being comfortable in a small house, or any house, is all about the design. You can walk into a 3,000 square foot house and it can actually feel smaller than a 1,800 square foot house. Creating a spacious feeling in a small house is about the layout, design elements, and organization options. This week’s Healthy Home Design podcast episode digs into ways to design a small house without sacrificing your comfort or flexibility. In this episode of SIGGRAPH Spotlight, SIGGRAPH 2021 Production Sessions Chair John Kalaigian (senior technical director, Blue Sky Studios) is joined by Erik Winquist (visual effects supervisor, Weta Digital) and Paul Franklin (creative director, DNEG) to discuss the hot topic of virtual production, what it entails, how it has worked in the past, how the COVID-19 pandemic spurred new opportunities, and what trends experts can expect for pre- and post-production virtual work in the future. Large-scale, in-person movie making is not going away completely but virtual production throughout the pandemic and beyond has the potential to open up new opportunities for filmmakers and visual effects teams. || MUSIC Podcast theme, "SIGGRAPH," composed by Julius Dobos. || LINKS *Episode* https://s2021.siggraph.org/program/production-sessions/ | https://s2021.siggraph.org/programs-events/ | https://www.wetafx.co.nz/ | https://www.dneg.com/shows/ | https://www.dneg.com/virtual-production/ |http://blueskystudios.com/ *Social Media* blog.siggraph.org | www.facebook.com/SIGGRAPHConferences | www.twitter.com/siggraph | www.youtube.com/user/ACMSIGGRAPH | www.instagram.com/acmsiggraph | www.linkedin.com/company/acm-siggraph/ *Conference Website* https://s2021.siggraph.org
How can you explain service design in a way that it actually clicks for other people? I know some people have give up on this but I don't think that's a smart strategy. Here's why. The multidisciplinary nature of service design requires you to collaborate with other people. You're not going to design a service on your own... So being able to get the message across about what you do and the value you bring is crucial. You might be wondering what is it that makes explaining service design so challenging? Well, combine two intangible concepts that not a lot of people really understand and you end up with service design. But there's hope! One very effective way to help people understand service design is by tapping into something the other person is already familiar with. How? By using a metaphor. In the past I've explained service design by comparing it things like a jazz band, organisational fitness and the operating system of your computer. There's an endless number of metaphors you can use to get the message across. I've teamed up with Robert Bau to inspire you with a few powerful metaphors that we really like. So if you want to get more people excited about what you do as a service designer, this episode is just what you need! --- [ GUIDE ] -— 00:00 Welcome to episode 117 01:10 Who is Robert 03:00 Why metaphors? 06:15 The Jazz Performance 09:15 The Mountain Guide 18:30 The Soccer Team 23:15 Theatre 37:00 Organisational Fitness 41:45 Being Stuck in the Middle 46:45 The Chef Cook 52:30 What's your favorit 53:30 Final thoughts --- [ LINKS ] --- * Episode 99: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5WNSWdocS4 * https://www.bauinnovationlab.com/blog/bringing-down-the-house-1 * https://www.bauinnovationlab.com/blog/the-mountain-guide-1 --- [ HOW TO EXPLAIN SERVICE DESIGN ] --- Learn what it takes to get your clients, colleagues, managers, CEOs and even grandmas as excited about service design as you are! https://servicedesignshow.com/free-course
