The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/03/binary-system-podcast-401-wtnv-243-lost-and-found-and-more-of-the-oscar-nominations/ On this week's Night Vale episode, we highly approve of Cecil devoting an entire broadcast to Lost and Found submissions, because writer Brie Williams is very good with lists of random weirdness, unexpected sweetness, and things with TEETH. From there we jump into three more Oscar nominated films we finally watched, namely Oppenheimer (brilliant but a bit too long, with "the most unnecessary nude scene ever"), Elemental, and Nimona. While we think Pixar usually has the better shot at winning the Animated Feature award, we're really pulling for Nimona. Along the way we wander off into tangents like the Hot Ones show, Florence Pugh, Redbox, nerd underwear, and the REALLY STUPID ADS in Amazon Prime. This week's outro is a clip from Keepsake by Beat Mekanik. Clarification: Redbox is 2.25, but that's just for one night, once you double it it's about the same as most of the 2-night rentals from Prime. Correction: Elemental did have a theatrical release, but according to the New York Times it had "the worst opening in Pixar history." It's since become a lot more successful. Correction #2 - Annapurna Pictures is the production company that took over from Blue Sky Studios when Disney axed Nimona. Kathryn got her Soot Sprite undies from All Teh Smol Things. Based on ND Stevenson's graphic novel, Nimona started life with Blue Sky Studios, and when Blue Sky was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 20th Century Fox, originally Nimona's production continued. When Disney officially cancelled Nimona, it came as no surprise to the team working on the movie. While officially the reasons for cancellation were financial, rumours swirled that Disney didn't like the LGBTQ themes, and opposed a same-sex kiss. But Nimona, and the crew behind the movie, refused to give up, and thanks to Annapurna Pictures and Netflix, Nimona was reborn. Nimona is more than a character. Nimona is the story of the making of this movie. Nimona is the scrappy underdog who refuses to back down from a fight. Nimona refuses to let a corporate entity subdue her and control her. Nimona might fall down, but Nimona will get back up again, and she will prove all her doubters wrong. And now Nimona is an Oscar nominated movie... take that, Disney.I would love to hear your thoughts on Nimona !CONTACT.... In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2011 Blue Sky Studios animated film Rio. A Spix's macaw named Blu was raised by a bookstore owner named Linda in Minnesota after being stolen as a chick by smugglers in Brazil. One day, a ornithologist named Tulio proposes to Linda to bring Blu to Brazil to mate with a female macaw named Jewel since they are the last two of their kind left. They then learn that they are the complete opposites with Blu being timid and domesticated and Jewel loves freedom and the wild forest. Meanwhile, they are kidnapped by smugglers to be sold and are chained together. They end up escaping and try to locate Linda before they are discovered by the smugglers and their cockatoo named Nigel. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $484 million dollars out of a $90 million dollar budget praising the animation, the vocal performances, and the music. It would eventually become Blue Sky Studio's second biggest franchise behind Ice Age with a sequel and a 4-D show in theaters. What did Patricia and Arun think of the film? In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Patricia and Arun discuss about the 2009 Blue Sky Studios animated film Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the third installment in the Ice Age franchise. Manny and Ellie are about to have a baby and that leaves Sid jealous that he isn't getting any more attention and Diego feeling like he's too old to being a part of the pack. Sid finds three eggs and decides to raise them as his own. That is the eggs hatched into three tyrannosaurus rex babies and the mother takes them and Sid underground into a lost world where the dinosaurs have been residing. It's up to Manny, Diego, Ellie, Crash, Eddie, and an adventurous weasel named Buck Wild to rescue Sid. Meanwhile, Scrat finds a flying squirrel who is both after the acorn he's been chasing and has a major crush on him. Who will he choose? When the film was released, it made over $886 million dollars out of a $90 million dollar budget. It was not only the highest grossing animated film of 2009, but the third highest grossing film of 2009 behind Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Avatar. In a year where studios such as Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and Sony were producing critically acclaimed animated films with The Princess and the Frog, Up!, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs respectfully and newcomers such as Laika and Cartoon Saloon were entering into the competition with their big premieres Coraline and The Secret of Kells, how does Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs stack up? An elephant named Horton sees a floating speck on a pink flower hearing voices not knowing that an entire civilization of Whos living in a town called Whoville live there. The mayor of Whoville, Ned McDodd, notices earthquakes and weather changes happening all of a sudden. When Horton and Major McNodd learn about one another, Horton tries to take the speck to a safe location and Major McNodd tries to convince the Whos to postpone the celebration of Whoville with no luck. Both are trying to convince everyone of the situation, but they don't believe them. When the movie premiered in theaters, it made over $298 million dollars out of a $85 million dollar budget receiving positive reviews after both the disappointment of Ice Age: The Meltdown and the critical bashing of the previous Dr. Seuss movie adaptation, The Cat in the Hat. Manny, Diego, and Sid live in a valley surrounded by a wall of ice living normal lives until an armadillo named Fast Tony warns everyone that the wall of ice is a dam and is cracking due to the ice melting. He offers to rescue everyone by taking them to a large log where they will be safe from the flooded water of the melted ice. While journeying to the log, Manny, Diego, and Sid meet up with a female mammoth named Ellie, who believes she's an opossum, and her two opossum brothers Crash and Eddie.
