It's 2025, and the same old questions are still being asked about food and health—how do we get people eating better, reduce obesity, improve health, and ease pressure on the NHS? Despite decades of policies and campaigns, the challenge remains. In this episode, Sheila Dillon is joined in the studio by three people whose work is dedicated to finding answers: Dr Dolly Van Tulleken, a visiting researcher at Cambridge University's MRC Epidemiology Unit, who has examined UK government obesity policy, documenting its repeated failures and interviewed several leaders about what can be learned from them; Anna Taylor, head of the Food Foundation, whose organisation has been researching the impact of poor diets, particularly on those living in poverty; and Ben Reynolds, formerly of Sustain, where he played a key role in some of the most successful food campaigns and is now working on food and farming policy across Europe as Executive Director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy. Also featured are Henry Dimbleby, author of The National Food Strategy, and Welsh food historian Carwyn Graves.Together, they discuss what's gone wrong, what's worked, and, as the new government announces plans for a fresh food strategy, what must be put in place to ensure it delivers real change.Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Natalie Donovan

Dr. Ben Reynolds has an MDiv and ThM from Gordon-Conwell Theological seminary and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Aberdeen University--which is where I met Ben. We both studied together under Simon Gathercole at Aberdeen and have been friends ever since. Ben is currently a professor of Bible and Theology at Tyndale University (Toronto) where he's been since 2009, and he enjoys teaching courses on the Gospels, Jesus, Second Temple Judaism, Greek, and hermeneutics. He's written and edited several scholarly works including his latest book: John Among the Apocalypses: Jewish Apocalyptic Tradition and the "Apocalyptic" Gospel. In this podcast conversation, Ben walks us through some theological themes in the narrative of John's gospel and helps us understand the meaning of Jesus' "Son of Man" language. Hunting sheep in Alaska is tough...doing it solo is tougher...dealing with the adversity of hunting in the late sheep season brings next-level challenges. Ringside Calculator Brings Technology to the Dog Show Exhibitor and amateur ap developer Ben Reynolds joins host Laura Reeves to introduce his dog show application, called https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ringside-calculator/id1530895743 (Ringside Calculator). Reynolds went to his first dog show when he started dating his wife. He was hooked and eventually acquired his Golden Retriever to show. “If I wanted to win, I wouldn't have started with a Golden Retriever,” Reynolds noted. “But I got to meet a lot of cool people. It's pretty intimidating, but the cool thing is every ring there's always a winner and there's always a loser. When I lost, I didn't feel bad. I had fun. “As I was researching into dog shows, the information is sparse and someone who wasn't raised in it, you don't really know what's going on and then the whole point system was really confusing.” Reynolds, an engineer by training, used the COVID lockdown to build an algorithm for counting points on a mobile ap with an up-to-date point schedule. Over the last couple years, he's integrated new features including grand champion points, dog profile, points progression, judge search, show searches and more. “I didn't change the world here with this information,” Reynolds noted, “The information is available. It's just not that accessible. But the ap is much more user and mobile friendly. “I've also collected every single conformation show result for the last five years. You can click “view results” and all the results for your dog will pop up.” Available on both iPhone and Android platforms, upcoming features will include a section for notes on dogs, judges, show sites; searching multiple breeds; competitor reports; personal judging schedules and more. Reynolds is actively seeking user input for new features. “Try to abuse it! Break the ap,” Reynolds said. “Tell me how you broke it. I'll fix it. I haven't had too many issues, but I want to hear your feedback. There will be a free trial available. There's a lot of people out there who know more than I do about dog shows. That's why I want the feedback.” Reach Reynolds at ringsidecalculator@gmail.com with input or questions.

Kiwi-founded alternative commentary startup Spalk has raised US$3 million ($4.3m) in a Series A round supported by a clutch of sports personalities - including Steven Adams and Greg Norman.Spalk was founded by recent Auckland University grads Ben Reynolds and Michael Prendergast in 2015, the NZ Herald reports. The pair landed a spot in Vodafone NZ's Xone business incubator the following year to develop their "next-generation sports broadcasting" startup - which syncs alternative commentary offered by bloggers and podcasters with live broadcasters.Prendergast told Heather du Plessis-Allan the platform allows broadcast commentators to work from home."They log in, they get a live feed on their laptop, they commentate as if they are at the stadium, and we sync that all up, and you as the viewer have no idea we're involved at all."Spalk can be also used by those seeking commentary in a different language, or by a different athlete or influencer. Big show this week as we look ahead to the British Trials in Manchester, with the expert help of world record course organiser, Chris Barnes. Animator Ben Reynolds returns to talk with John about two pieces of media that, despite being very different, may be kindred spirits in terms of the positive and inspirational effects they've had on us. John starts things off with his thoughts on Pixar's Soul, how it handles representation and some of the reasons for its somewhat divisive public reception, and why its ultimate message struck him so deeply and why the movie has ended up meaning so much to him personally. After that, we take a look at one of 2020's big anime underdogs with a discussion about the one-of-a-kind Eizuoken. Topics include what an accurate and personal love letter to the craft of animation it succeeds at being, the memorable cast and worldbuilding, and how it's inspired us as creators. (And Kanamori. No one who watches this show can forget Kanamori.) Andrew and Simon were all set to see out the year in peace and quiet but a voice from across the pond just wouldn’t let us rest. Kicking and screaming we were dragged from our respective bunkers to record one more show. Erik and Andrew were “on camera” but Simon chose to be the all seeing “Eye of Sauron” , and why not. Things we chatted about on the show: Although we had planned to spend some time discussing the future direction of the Show Andrew and Eric took up so much time at the beginning we ran out of time, apparently Erik has a proper job that he sometimes has to go to. Andrew was excited to talk about his new Chroma Snapshot camera from the super clever Steve Lloyd of Chroma Camera – check it out and much more here https://chroma.camera/snapshot/ Simon tried to shoe horn is new Chroma Carbon Adventurer into the conversation but we all agreed it was far too orange to discuss in detail. Along with the new Snapshot is coming in the post a Schneider Anngulon 90mm f6.8 which is a teeny weeny lens that just about covers 4x5 and is an ideal companion to the snapshot for handheld LF photography. Thanks to Ben Reynolds https://www.facebook.com/BadBeard or Ren Beynolds as his may be known as well for sending Andrew a Grafmatic film holder which will also pair up nicely with the Snapshot. Somewhow we moved on to barrel lenses and projector lenses. All three of us I think have the Leitz 200mm f3.6 mounted for 4x5 and whilst this set up is OK for paper negatives we eagerly await a commercial barrel lens shutter system like the one the aforementioned Steve Lloyd is developing. Erik spoke about the lack of creative spaces in the Bay Area where he lives and the need for such spaces where photographers and printers can gather, use darkrooms, compare prints and generally hang out. Simon tried to convince us that the Six Towns Darkroom in Stoke on Trent , England was such a space but we all agreed it just doesn’t have the weather. Simon gave a shout out to the spin off podcast “Sunny 16 Presents” and especially show all about Caffenol – here is a link https://sunny16presents.podbean.com/e/on-location-caffenol-with-christian-strauf-and-jonathon-becker/?fbclid=IwAR0_DZ5eqh6_BHnVVw9GLMZlLH4aVpKTHxzBDhdp3KaTaQ-xg2Z_Q6KZpLs And finally join us on January 2nd for an exclusive LFPP FB Group screening of the Adobe Create documentary made all about Erik and his epic bicycle ride with a LF camera and dollar bill lens “Ride Slow, Take Photos”. Other News The Six Towns Darkroom was OPEN but is now CLOSED as Stoke enters Tier 3 Covid restrictions. We are back with episode #2 so clearly we mean business! Today we are joined by our good friend Graham Vasey, bearded Gentleman of the North, angler extraordinaire and who also knows a thing or two about using large format cameras. Graham crafts wonderfully evocative images made largely within 20 miles of his home in the Durham area using a variety of older uncoated lenses mounted on a 5x4 and sometimes 10x8 camera. His final images are made using liquid emulsion, salt prints (hey did you know Andrew did those), wet plate collodion and lith prints – you’ll be pleased to hear or not we didn’t get to talk about ANY of those things so that will have to wait till Darth Vasey returns. Simon started off by asking Graham what a fine art photograph was cos that’s what it says on his website – come on Simon, don’t ask our guests such challenging questions without any advance warning! The discussion for the next 90 mins or so covers the use of roll film backs on LF cameras, we touch briefly on Graham’s use of liquid emulsions, emails from Cass Fitzgerald who asks us about paper negatives and speed rating in particular and haze on lenses where Simon gets a shameless plug for the Classic Lenses Podcast. We also dive into an email from Ben Reynolds who puts Simon straight on the difference between Micro-Press and Micro-Technical cameras. The use of Aero Ektar lenses, older uncoated lenses, advice on buying on line – be careful – maybe go to a good retailer and discuss (see links) – Ben asks us a question about bellows extension so that takes up a bit of time. We all thoroughly enjoyed our time chatting with Graham and hope you enjoy listening. We realise there is just so very much to cover and much more to discuss with Graham at a later date. You can find Graham’s work in the following places; https://grahamvasey.wordpress.com www.grahamvasey.com https://twitter.com/Gvaseyphoto https://www.instagram.com/grayheadv Graham has some of his prints on show and for sale at his local contemporary art gallery in Darlington called The Gallerina https://www.gallerina.co.uk/graham-vasey#! A sticking point for many of who grew up in church or find ourselves surrounded by church culture is the Bible. It's an incredible anthology made up of dozens of individual documents, each of which has hundreds of different manuscripts, copied down and collated over a series of thousands of years. But perhaps most audacious of all is its central claim: that contained within its pages are thoughts, feelings, and communications from God himself. How we think about the Bible is vital if we take faith and spirituality seriously. In this episode, we interview Ben Reynolds about issues surrounding translation, Biblical interpretation, and how to understand and study the Bible for ourselves. We learned a lot in this episode, and we hope you do too! Website and Blog | Facebook Page | Facebook Group | Instagram Send us an email at burnthehaystackpodcast@gmail.com.

Chris is back! Fellow indie animator Ben Reynolds makes his debut! I can't stop using exclamation points! We talk a healthy variety of topics this week, from opening discussions and projects that drive our longtime message "Animation is hard" home, to Ben's thoughts on the recent Netflix series Altered Carbon, and Chris and John finally dishing out their feelings about Dragon Ball FighterZ after months of personal hype. But the bulk of the episode goes to Ben's pick of another ongoing Netflix exclusive, as the three of us talk about the characters, action, writing, and other ingredients that make Voltron: Legendary Defender (Seasons 1 & 2 to be specific) something special. Expect some observations on older incarnations of the franchise, Studio Trigger aliens voiced by Norman Reedus, why emo Coran is the best, issues with mech transformation scenes, how Chris can go ahead loving Lance all by his lonesome, and a horrifying Google search that has blessed you with this episode's thumbnail. Plus, listen to the end for our roadmap regarding the next two episodes.
