In this episode of “In Stride,” Sinead is joined by horsemanship trainers Tik Maynard and Nick Rivera. Tik Maynard, the 2024 and 2025 Road to the Horse Champion, is partnered with fellow horsemanship trainer and Pen Wrangler Nick Rivera. Tik has been both Long-Listed and Short-Listed for the Canadian National Three-Day Event Team, won the Freestyle at the Thoroughbred Makeover in 2015 and 2018, and is the author of In The Middle Are The Horsemen. He teaches clinics nationwide and runs a training business at Copperline Farm with his wife, Sinead Halpin Maynard. Nick, a Wisconsin native and University of Wisconsin graduate, has been passionate about horses since childhood and turned professional after college. He co-created the nationwide product “Whinny Water” with Ryan Rose and now contributes to The Horseman's University, where he hopes to inspire students through education, challenges, and shared adventures with his horse, Jasper. In this episode, Tik and Nick discuss topics related to natural horsemanship and The Road to the Horse, including: • What the Road to the Horse competition is and the important role a Pen Wrangler plays in the event. • How Tik and Nick prepared for the competition by prioritizing the process over the outcome. • The unexpected lessons they discovered along the way. • How natural horsemanship techniques can benefit sport horses by making them happier and better understood. Join Tik, Nick, and Sinead in this exciting conversation about their unforgettable Road to the Horse journey.

We're back with Danielle Montgomery for Part 2 of our deep dive into Turning For Home, one of the most effective and scalable Thoroughbred aftercare programs in the country. In this episode, we focus on what makes their approach so successful—namely, their partner farm model, lifetime safety net, and emphasis on long-term support for every horse that leaves the track at Parx Racing. With over 4,400 OTTBs rehomed and counting, Turning For Home has built a nationwide network of trusted partner farms, each committed to retraining and transitioning retired racehorses into second careers ranging from eventing and dressage to trail riding and Western disciplines. What happens to Thoroughbred broodmares when their breeding careers end? Too often, these mares are overlooked in the aftercare conversation, but Mareworthy Charities is working to change that. Founded by Kyle Rothfus, Mareworthy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to giving retired OTTB broodmares the retirement, rehoming, and second careers they deserve. In this episode, Kyle takes us behind the scenes of Mareworthy's mission, sharing how the organization got started and what makes their approach to aftercare unique. We dig into the challenges of rehoming broodmares, the process of matching them with adopters, and how their partnership with the Retired Racehorse Project is creating more opportunities for these mares. Plus, Kyle shares some standout success stories that prove just how much these horses still have to offer—including one familiar to OTTB on Tap listeners. Annika Greaney, one of last year's RRP Trainer Chronicles guests, competed at the Thoroughbred Makeover with Egoli, a retired broodmare she adopted from Mareworthy.Mareworthy is also educating future OTTB owners through Mareworthy Academy, a free, expert-led 8-week program designed to help aspiring owners gain the knowledge they need to successfully care for a retired broodmare—or any horse. If you're inspired by Mareworthy's work, you can learn more and support them at mareworthy.com. Donations help cover the cost of care, retraining, and rehoming for the mares in their program, and there are plenty of ways to get involved—whether through sponsorship, adoption, or spreading the word.Next week, we're switching gears and breaking down listener-submitted OTTBs in OTTB on Tap Evaluates Volume 4! Welcome to the first installment of our OTTB on Tap - Retired Racehorse Project collaboration! On today's show, we have Annika Greaney-Stanger who has two OTTBs that she is retraining for the 2024 RRP Makeover in some varied disciplines including Ranch Work, Barrels, Trail and maybe some Western Dressage. Both horses are former broodmares and racehorses. Tizso Majestic, “Tessa” a 2013 mare (Majestic Warrior - Piazza Grande, by Hennessy and Egoli a 2016 mare (Quality Road - Somasach, by Johannesburg). In this episode, we chat with Annika about what it is like to restart two very different OTTB mares, especially after a long time off. She gives us tips and insights into both mares' personalities and explains how she likes to approach some tricky topics, like introducing her OTTBs to cows and ranch work for the first time. Being located in Fargo, ND, Annika also talks about transitioning OTTBs off the track in that climate, and the challenges (or advantages!) of trailering her horses long-distance for most of her showing throughout the year. Annika is also participating in the Make the Makeover: your contribution to an individual trainer fundraiser through the 2024 Make the Makeover campaign can help them earn refunded entry fees, AND help produce the biggest movement in Thoroughbred aftercare, the Thoroughbred Makeover.Donate to Annika's Make the Makeover CampaignPast episodes in the RRP Trainer Chronicles:Ep 14: OTTB on Tap: RRP Trainer Chronicles - Meet the TrainersLearn more about Annika Greaney-Stanger

Welcome to Season Four of the Dressage Today podcast. In the first episode of 2023, Aviva shares some memories of riding with Elizabeth Madlener who recently passed away. Aviva and Stephanie also discuss the month's “Ask the L” question, “Are you judged on what happens between the movements? Or is it just the movement itself?” Together they interview Alison O'Dwyer, a successful dressage and eventing trainer and competitor who has made her niche in retraining thoroughbred racehorses.Alison O'Dwyer is originally from Colorado where she started taking consistent riding lessons at six years old. By the time she graduated high school she had competed in two CCI** events. Taking a gap year after graduation she headed to Kentucky to work for WEG silver medalist, Dorothy (Trapp) Crowell where Alison made huge strides in her horsemanship and riding ability. Under Dorothy's tutelage Alison was able to compete up to the CCI***L level. In Kentucky she gained an interest in dressage and achieved her USDF Bronze Medal with the help of Reese Koffler-Standfield. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Alison went to work for Michael Pollard where she trained on her own horse and groomed professionally for his string of international eventers. Soon after retiring her last upper-level horse, she found her current niche in retraining ex-racehorses for eventing and dressage. Her recent success has been highlighted by the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover where she's managed to win the dressage competition three times. This year Alison has two more exciting prospects for the competition in 2023. She has recently relocated to Wellington Florida.
