“Gold is having a moment,” writes New Yorker staff writer Jennifer Wilson. Earlier this year, it traded as high as $5,500 an ounce as an unstable economic outlook has central banks and investors buying gold to hedge their bets. Gold has been embraced by the far right, reality TV, and hobbyists and full-time prospectors headed up to the foothills where the California Gold Rush began. Wilson explores all these angles in her latest piece “How Americans Caught Gold Fever Again.” We talk to Wilson and experts – and a gold prospector –  about the legacy and future of this precious metal. "I put very little value on, well, what will everybody think of that? Or what's the outcome for me in that? ... February is Pro Life Month, and we're honored to welcome Jen Wilson back to the show to talk about Young Lives ministry, why it matters, and how each of us can love young mamas well from right where we are. Jen shares the powerful story of how God planted the seed for this ministry in the middle of her own cancer journey, and how saying yes to this work has radically changed her life. Through Young Lives, teen moms are seen, known, supported, and reminded that they are deeply loved by God and by the people walking alongside them. This conversation is both encouraging and practical. Jen helps us think through what it looks like to step outside our comfort zones, listen for God's call, and respond with obedience, even when it's not easy. As she beautifully says, "It's not easy, but it's an incredible privilege." There are so many ways to get involved with Young Lives through prayer, financial support, providing a meal, helping with childcare, mentoring a young mama, or supporting an upcoming local shopping event later this month. If you've ever wondered how God might be inviting you to love well in a tangible way, this episode is for you. Prenups have gone from a tool of the ultra-wealthy, carrying a whiff of scandal, to a more widespread request for aspirational young couples with few assets. Wilson spoke with celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser, and found that generations who grew up in the era of universal no-fault divorce “just don't trust marriage” as their elders did; “they want it in writing,” and they have developed apps that make it easy. Clauses calling for nondisparagement on social media are a common feature. But the boom in prenups, Wilson tells David Remnick, has led to couples trying to negotiate even intimate issues such as frequency of sex and body-mass index. Jennifer Wilson's “Why Millennials Love Prenups” appeared in the December 29, 2025 & January 5, 2026 issue of The New Yorker.

In the last episode, I told you the story of ten-year-old Dakota Levi Stevens, a smart, creative, charming kid who was dealt a bad hand in life and died at the hands of a foster mother and longtime family friend. Jennifer Wilson is now serving a regrettably short sentence in the Indiana prison system for crushing 91-pound Levi to death with her 341-pound body weight. In this episode, you'll hear my conversation with three of the people who loved Levi the most: Grandma Melissa Mahler; Aunt Ana Parrish; and Uncle Alex Parrish. Levi's maternal family members told me about their family's constant attempts to rescue Levi from the foster care system; their heartache at Levi's bright light being snuffed out by someone they thought they could trust; and their efforts to make changes to help other kids like Levi. This is part two of the heart-wrenching story of Dakota Levi Stevens.Honoring Dakota Levi Stevens on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3953712874915112/ Change.org petition to remove Robert Wilson as middle school principal: https://www.change.org/p/demand-the-removal-of-principal-robert-wilson-from-lake-ridge-new-tech-middle-school Change.org petition to hold DCS accountable for failing Indiana's vulnerable children: https://www.change.org/p/hold-the-department-of-children-and-family-services-accountable-for-foster-child-deaths Levi's Law petition: https://www.change.org/p/let-s-get-levi-s-law-started?recruiter=295397157&recruited_by_id=d285ea50-f8dd-11e4-8573-5be613050eb0 Lake County Candlelight Vigil for Victims of Child Abuse (April 30): https://www.facebook.com/share/16RPD7VvE4/ Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpod You can also follow the podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpodMy Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. By supporting me on Patreon, you'll also access rewards, including a shout-out by name on the podcast and exclusive rewards. Katie Kitamura's fifth novel is “Audition,” and it focusses on a middle-aged actress and her ambiguous relationship with a much younger man. Kitamura tells the critic Jennifer Wilson that she thought for a long time about an actress as protagonist, as a way to highlight the roles women play, and to provoke questions about agency. “I teach creative writing, and in class often ... if there is a character who the group feels doesn't have agency, that is often brought up as a criticism of the character,” she tells Wilson. Other students will say, “ ‘She doesn't have any agency,' as if a character without agency is implausible or in some way not compelling in narrative terms. But of course, the reality is very few of us have total agency. I think we operate under the illusion or the impression that we have a great deal of agency. But in reality when you look at your life, our choices are quite constricted.” “Audition” comes out this week.
