Find out more about Daily Strides Premium HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/dsp Being on a horse who is determined to run as fast as he possibly can towards every pole, fence, or jump that he sees is nerve-wracking! There are many reasons your horse might do this. And assuming that you have ruled out discomfort or pain, then retraining can begin. Unfortunately, retraining a horse who has become practiced in rushing jumps is a long and slow process. It requires time and consistency. And often requires the rider to make some changes as well. In this episode, plucked directly from Daily Strides Premium, we will focus on you, the rider. My goal here is to help you identify where you might just be 'enabling' or even encouraging your horse's tendency for rushing jumps! I know this sounds a little bananas, but it happens more often than you think! This is an audio horse riding lesson and can be listened to as you ride your horse to help you become more aware of what you are doing in the saddle and how this may be influencing your horse. Read the full post & get all links HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1341-retraining-rushing-jumps-working-on-the-rider-first/ Re-schooling Rushing Jumps on the Flat If you have been struggling with this challenge, the month of October 2024 in Daily Strides Premium is dedicated to working on this. This episode is the first lesson from a week of audio horse riding lessons titled "Re-Schooling the Basics for Both Horse & Rider on the Flat". In this group of lessons, we begin working towards re-training a horse who is rushing fences by working on the basic aids, responsiveness and, equally as important, how the rider thinks. Remember, re-shooling a horse usually also involves re-training the rider to think and act differently. The horse will respond better if the rider changes their approach and is consistently correct in what they are doing and asking…. These lessons will help you to develop better habits and responses. What happens when an army officer who has never ridden a horse (but has jumped out of planes) marries an event rider? He starts eventing, of course! In the first installment of our newest series, “OTTB Underdog Stories,” we explore how Brian Roberts began riding just over three years ago, taking on an OTTB with a tricky reputation. Now a successful training level eventing pair, Brian and his OTTB, Bombino, are a fixture at Area 2 events. We discuss his journey, from his first trip to the tack shop for a “riding starter kit” to learning about Bombino's signature move at their first event. We also delve into how the most talented horses can also be the quirkiest. Through it all, the partnership of Brian and Bombino shines through. We appreciate Brian's fresh perspective on horses, his experience starting a challenging new sport later in life, and his humorous outlook on life. We hope you will join us for this fun episode!
Special Guest June Hillman shares the legacy of Castle Rock Farm, her partnership with Thoroughbred aftercare organization Turning for Home, and so much more in this episode!June is no stranger to Thoroughbreds - she is part of their entire lifecycle, from conception to foal, racehorse to OTTB restart. She has been the manager of Castle Rock Farm in West Chester, PA since 1995 and has handled TB stallions such as Patton, Harry the Hat, Partner's Hero, Power by Far, Awad, Alyten, and Rimrod. The farm breeds and raises about 10-15 baby racehorses each year nowadays, and June handles them from the moment they are born, helping to shape them into what she affectionately calls "Good Citizens." This is especially helpful when they return after their racing careers and June transitions them into their new homes as sporthorses. She is also partnered with Turning for Home, a racehorse retirement program based out of Pennsylvania's Parx Racetrack. Through TFH, June rehabilitates, retrains, and rehomes many OTTBs each year. She prides herself in taking the time to learn about each horse as an individual, and carefully place them in appropriate homes. In this episode, we also talk about how no horse is perfect, and often those with blemishes, old injuries, or the need for a little maintenance gets them passed over by potential new homes. We highlight a current OTTB that June is retraining, "Angel" or Angeli Blu, a 2019 bay TB gelding by Air Force Blue (War Front/Danzig) out of the Irish TB Cabin (Galileo/Sadler's Wells). Angel is the type of horse that you just want to ride every day!June can be contacted through her Facebook page, where she also posts her horses for sale. You can find about Angel in his ad here. Become more consistent in your riding with Daily Strides Premium There is this lovely place that you will reach with your horse in your training where you are working together. Both of you are invested in creating a desired outcome. This point is usually when you can begin to create and maintain consistent contact. It's like an unwritten agreement between the two of you. And once consistent contact is created and can be maintained for longer periods, you can then begin to think about how that energy will work for both of you from this point… Impulsion is a word that is bandied about a lot when it comes to horses and riding. Many riders, incorrectly, associate it with speed. The faster you're going the more impulsion you're creating. However, this couldn't be further from the truth… And how you influence the channel for this energy is where it all begins… This episode of the Daily Strides Podcast sets up a whole week of 5 lessons titled 'Engaging the Energy in a Correct Channel'. If you would like the rest of the lessons for this training, you can get them inside of Daily Strides Premium. Contact is something so many riders want to achieve when working with their horses. However, it's always worthwhile remembering that your horse was not born knowing how to be ridden. This means that contact is something both of you must learn about and then refine through your work together. For many horses, the challenge is made even more difficult when they have been taught something completely different about contact because they had a previous career. Especially if that career was racing. When working with horses, especially ex-racehorses or OTTBs, we need to understand that there will be both training and re-training involved. And sometimes, the retraining can be a little more challenging than the training due to your horse wanting to ‘revert', especially when they feel stressed or anxious. This episode is the first episode in a week of audio horse riding lessons from Daily Strides Premium.
