Justin Sunseri tackles a common belief among his clients—the necessity of identifying the root cause of anxiety, anger, or depression to address these feelings. Justin reads and responds to a community member's query about 'safety anchors' and their effectiveness when the source of anxiety is unknown. He explains that while knowing the trigger can be helpful, it is not essential for alleviating anxiety. By permitting emotions and listening to what the body needs, individuals can reduce the intensity of their feelings. Justin emphasizes reframing the idea of 'fixing' emotions to 'unsticking' them and validates the importance of feeling and acknowledging emotions in the present moment. Navigating the Middle Ground: Open-Mindedness vs. Firm Beliefs

Encouragementology

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are trying to achieve a balance between open-mindedness and firm beliefs as we navigate the middle ground. Staying true to your convictions is one position you can take but how does that stance affect the way you embrace new ideas and differing opinions? Ever feel like you're walking a mental tightrope, trying to keep an open mind while staying true to what you believe? It's like trying to balance on a seesaw with a curious toddler on one end and a stubborn goat on the other—challenging, unpredictable, and sometimes a little funny in hindsight. In this episode, we're exploring how to navigate the middle ground between welcoming new ideas and standing firm in your values. We'll tackle the fear of being too easily swayed, the risks of being stuck in your ways, and that frustrating paralysis that comes from overthinking it all. Let's dive in, find our balance, and discover how to approach life's challenges with curiosity and confidence.  Let's make sure we all understand the definition of Open-Mindedness: The willingness to consider new ideas and perspectives. Misconception: Being open-minded means accepting everything without question. Feel risky? If so, you might have fear around: Losing your identity. Being coerced into decisions you wouldn't normally make. The slippery slope of “people-pleasing” or over-compromise. I hear you—it's exhausting trying to make sense of the conflicting messages we're bombarded with daily. “Stand your ground!” but “Embrace diverse ideas.” “If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!” yet “You're narrow-minded if you don't change your mindset to fit everyone else's.” Whoa, slow down! Where do we even start? For me, it's all about a multi-pronged approach. I pray, listen to my heart, try to see the bigger picture, and seek knowledge—always in that order. I trust myself, but let's be real, I don't know everything, and I can't navigate life's challenges alone. When I feel that pressure or tension to believe something or act a certain way, I take a step back and ask, “Why?” Why am I feeling this way? This simple pause keeps me from rushing into conclusions or making impulsive decisions. Here's the thing: I think many of us adopt an idea and fiercely protect it before we've really researched or tested it. It's human nature to want to feel confident and certain, but what if we took a moment to explore, question, and truly understand? That's where real balance and growth begin. At Psychology Compass I found how you have to Contradict yourself to become more open-minded On Forbes, Dr. Alice G. Walton offers 7 Science-Backed Methods To Get You Out Of Your Head On The Table's YouTube channel, I found Changing Your Mind: Virtue or Vice.  So what happens when you find yourself in this overwhelming push/pull situation in your thinking? What causes it and how do we overcome it? Fear of Making the “Wrong” Decision or Offending Others The Issue: Many of us freeze at the thought of making a decision that might upset someone or turn out to be a mistake. This fear can be paralyzing, leading to second-guessing or endless deliberation. How to Overcome It: Embrace the idea that no decision is ever truly final—most can be adjusted or revisited. Shift your mindset from “right vs. wrong” to “learning and growing.” Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for progress. Being Stuck in Indecision Due to Conflicting Inner Voices The Issue: One part of you says, “Stay safe and stick to what you know,” while another whispers, “Take a risk and explore new possibilities.” This inner tug-of-war can leave you immobilized. How to Overcome It: Practice tuning into each voice without judgment. Ask yourself, “What's the worst-case scenario? What's the best-case scenario?” Write these down and weigh the options. Sometimes seeing your thoughts in writing can bring clarity. Here are some more practical ways to break free: 1. Pause and Reflect Without Judgment When faced with pressure or indecision, step back and take a breather. Don't rush into action or self-criticism. Use simple tools like deep breathing, journaling, or a quiet walk to clear your head. 2. Set Boundaries: Know When to Listen and When to Step Away Not every conversation or input requires your full engagement. If external opinions are overwhelming you, give yourself permission to politely step back. A simple, “Thank you for sharing—I need some time to think this through,” can go a long way. 3. Practice Mindful Decision-Making Approach decisions with intentionality. Focus on what aligns with your values and goals rather than what pleases others. Break larger decisions into smaller steps to make them feel less daunting, and celebrate each small step forward. CHALLENGE: Pause and reflect the next time you feel pulled in opposite directions—take a moment to tune into your heart, weigh your values, and explore new perspectives without judgment. Commit to standing firm in what matters most to you while staying open to growth, knowing that true balance is found in the space between.   I Know YOU Can Do It!

In this episode, Sara talks about being in the Fog vs. Being Stuck. Being Stuck means you cannot even move (yet), but in the Fog means you are not stuck, you are moving, you just may not be sure which direction to go in. Here, she speaks of being in the Fog-finding your direction or your north star. Sara also compares it to her experience, literally being lost in the fog out in the ocean on her paddleboard, and the metaphor of how she found her way back to shore. Many of us would lose it, not being able to see what's in front of us, or know how to get back “home”. Sara kept her cool, and you will hear what tools (and dolphins) she called upon. Though afraid, she did not let fear immobilize her. She responded, but did not react. She also listened to her intuition. And she asked the universe for help. This event imprinted exactly the tools for when you are feeling lost in the fog in life. Stay level, do not react, be confident, ask for help, listen to your intuition. You will find your way “home” to yourself and to the place you are supposed to be. Here are Sara's tips for navigating the fog: 1.Pay attention to your surroundings. You are the captain of your own life. If this chapter is not working, start a new one. Look at the people around you and do not hesitate to ask for help. 2.Know your values. Don't listen to outside noise, listen to yourself. Ask “who am I?” “How do I choose to live?” And these inner knowings will help guide you. Being STUCK means you know you're in a bad place, but you don't have the power to do anything about it. Most people get stuck sometimes, but those who were abused or neglected in childhood have extra susceptibility to staying in bad jobs and harmful relationships. It may be driven by financial insecurity, health problems, shame, fear of being alone, low self-esteem, or the freeze response. Join us in a conversation on:  Shadow Work in a high-consciousness field, qualities of a high-consciousness field, and indicators of a rise in consciousness. What is the shadow? We define it as unconscious aspects of the self that we might see as “negative”. Are your shadows unconsciously running the show? How do they show themselves? Some ways of recognizing your shadow: Being Stuck in an area of your life or experiencing the same situation over and over, triggers and taking note of your reactions, and noticing the body sensations instead of calling them emotions. How triggers can be opportunities to move closer to peace and ways to learn about self We provide 5 practical steps to assist in moving through shadow. We discuss acknowledging shadow as part of the human condition, that it's within us, and identifying where these show up in our lives. The Benefits of Being Stuck is a series highlighting the topics of obedience, evangelism and the power to overcome through the books of 1st Samuel. The series begins with a quick overview of the book and then diving into the three main characters that will be taught each week of the series Samuel, Saul & David in a day when we are hesitant to be obedient to any authority, our obedience to God often is the missing piece that leads to freedom. God wants us to follow his ways and we remain stubborn and desire our ways. Obedience is muscle memory. Following the guidance of God is something that we have to train ourselves to do. 1 Samuel 15:1-35 #HillChurchMcminnville

Episode 33C-PTSD and Being Stuck in the MudNot the first time, probably  not the last.August 2, 2021This week I am talking about being “stuck in the mud”. I'm spinning my wheels and I got no traction. It's beginning to trouble me. The good news is that doing this podcast is regenerative for me. I know I have been really inconsistent these past couple of months, but I believe I am on the upswing after increasing my Fluoxetine to 40mg/day. This seems like an appropriate dose for the moment. Don't think that the medication is the only thing that is making a difference. I have had a lot of time to think and thinking I did. I thunk and I thunk and I thunk. Now I'm exhausted from all of the thinking.Today's episode: C-PTSD and Stuck in the Mud details these struggles as well as some ideas to break the logjam. I'm not completely out of the woods yet, but the sun is shining and my mood is improving, poco a poco. I am encouraged. If it weren't for this podcast, I would not be able to say this. I owe much of my improvement, which is marginal at best, to my listeners. You folks who consistently listen to Out of My Mind in Costa Rica. You have my heart and my dedication. Now, let me share a few websites that help to put an exclamation point onto this week's episode. My friend, the friend, whom I highlighted a couple of weeks ago, recommended a book by Pema Chӧdrӧn, entitled When Things Fall Apart. It is a Buddhist perspective on coming to terms with and resolving life's most painful moments. Its approach is familiar but the practices she described are revolutionary. Last week, we kicked off a new series on Being Stuck. In last week's episode, we looked at it at a high level and from the perspective of how ‘staying stuck' is soothing you or making you feel better.I thought that was an interesting way to look at it because most of the time when we talk about being stuck or getting unstuck, we look at “how” to do it.I started this series by talking about how staying stuck might be serving you. And not serving you in that staying stuck is going to get you where we need to go. It's not.But instead, how staying stuck is a technique we use to avoid discomfort. Staying stuck makes us feel better. Calmer. In control. And given the pace of change today, I think more and more people are living stuck. It's a choice we make. Sometimes it doesn't FEEL like a choice. But it IS a choice. A choice we make so we can FEEL better. We're going to be talking about it all through April. But in each of the next four episodes, we're going to take one reason we get stuck and we're going to go deep. We're going to examine stuck-ness and look at how we get there. Because it's about how our BRAIN works. As you know, on this podcast and in my business, we look at how to build a meaningful career from the inside out. And I know this is different from a lot of other business and career coaches. But what I know for sure is that having an amazing career. One that is meaningful and aligned with what you REALLY want. And one that plays well with and complements your life, is about mastering the art of how you think. It's about overcoming our insecurities and irrational fears and false or limiting beliefs and training our brain to instead think powerful, confident thoughts that serve you and are aligned with where you want to go.And this will transform everything about your career and life – relationships, achievements, satisfaction, skills, possibilities – and so much more. But today, we're going to tackle something that affects so many of us and that is the Fear of the Unknown.Because this is one of the big reasons people choose to stay stuck. Choose to put their dreams aside. For me, this is a topic that's near and dear to my heart because I've experienced it first-hand.I know that when people who know me look at my journey from the outside, hearing me say that I've struggled with Fear of the Unknown kind of doesn't make sense. After all, the golden thread that runs through my life is CHANGE.I claim to LOVE change. And I do.But the truth is, I like change on MY terms. When I can control it.When I believe I'm in charge of whatever change is happening and can vet what's coming and DECIDE that I feel comfortable with it.And my life is proof of that.I started as a hairstylist paying my own way through a private college and over the next twenty years, I became a multi-six figure-earning corporate brand strategist.  Along the way, I lived in 10 different cities and I've lost track of the number of houses I've bought. So I really believed I was ALL ABOUT change. I told myself and others that I loved it. And I could kind of never relate when people said they were afraid of it.So, imagine my surprise when I had an idea for my business – way back in 2011 by the way – and then found myself struggling get the courage to finally DO IT.And as I began to explore the whys behind that, I had to face the truth. I was afraid to make the move to entrepreneur.  Well, let's just say that I finally got the whole “being stuck” thing. And I came to understand – at a very deep level – what it felt like to really FEEL that fear of the unknown. If you can relate to this, you'll find this a very helpful episode.
