In a world where so much is out of your control, it’s all too easy to find yourself in a place of stress and anxiety. There is sickness and disease, there is poverty and corruption and if you continue to focus on these things, you can quickly become overwhelmed. We now know the negative impacts of stress on our bodies, but if you don’t intentionally focus on something else, that stress will continue to imbed its effects into your mind and body. What can you do to make a positive change? You might not be able to control global events, but you can control the way you approach them. You can control the way you think, the way you speak, and the way you treat others.  You might feel like you don’t have control over events in your life, in your relationships or your business, but you do. We all have the power to choose what happens in our lives and it starts with GRATITUDE. There are numerous studies about the power of positive thinking but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. When things are falling to pieces, it can feel like a battle to break out of negative mindsets and dismantle the power of the inner critic. Our guest today is Vivian Kaye, Founder and CEO of KinkyCurlyYaki and a woman who manifests the power of gratitude. Vivian first discovered the power of gratitude in January 2019 when she started using a ‘5 minute gratitude journal’. Finding herself in a low place, she realized that she needed to change something and decided to make the gratitude journal part of her daily routine. By the end of the year, she was amazed at the success and abundance that she had experienced and upon reflection she realized it was all attributed to her practice of gratitude. Vivian shares with us 5 amazing tips of how practicing gratitude will impact your life for the better. We’ve all heard about self care, but this is more than just massages and candlelit baths.  Gratitude goes beyond the external and into the soul, a reprogramming of your subconscious. When you practice gratitude, you will experience a true manifestation of success, abundance and happiness in your life. The outworking of this is immeasurable. What better way to change the world than to change yourself first?   LINKS WE MENTIONED: Vivian Kaye’s 7 Day Gratitude Challenge Vivian Kaye instagram: @itsviviankaye

What do Coke, McDonalds, KFC, Dr Pepper (and many others) all have in common? Besides calories, they all have a secret, well-protected formula behind their biggest selling items. A closely-guarded recipe to success. Well on today’s episode, Kentucky Fried Kribashini and Dr Rebeka open their vault and reveal their 11 secret herbs and spices on designing, renovating and building for profit: Buy, renovate, sell at a profit… Mind blown! But of course, there is more to it than that. The BuildHers talk through the ingredients to their most financially delectable projects to help you replicate their success at home. Renovating for profit is a widely held career dream as well as a retirement aspiration for many due to the universal love of selecting, sprucing, and selling. However, there are many facets to this revenue stream that must be taken into account by any aspiring renovator wanting to turn some real profits. Rebeka and Kribashini talk through their plan to success in renovating for profit and if you think it is void of hard work, you are sadly mistaken. Uniqueness, homework, open-mindedness, adaptability, community - all these form important pillars to succeeding at renovating for profit. Admittedly, applying these as a one-size-fits-all solution is impossible as there are tremendous fluctuations in market demand, renovator preference, and personal branding which is why the BuildHer Collective offers a free 20-minute consult where your specific scenario can be set into BuildHer’s secret framework to success. Property before Prada, houses before handbags, developments before diamonds. These are some of the messages being delivered by our mortgage-broking, numbers-nerd, lending-wizard Katherine Persoglia as she chats to Building with BuildHer’s own Kribashini about property finance. Securing that first home loan is a scary step to take for anyone - even for the ladies on our show - and it is easy to make mistakes (again, even our own Kribashini and our honoured guest Katherine made mistakes on their first loans, tune in at 4:26 to hear it). Complicating this is the jargon that so often accompanies discussions with banks and lenders. This makes for a very stressful and risky time for anyone looking to finance their first property. Katherine is a 17-year veteran of property finance, a field she came across during her own extensive developing-for-profit career beginning at the age of 19! Her passion for profitability and helping others made her a perfect mortgage broker and paved the way for Property Before Prada, her enterprise of economic efficiency in the field of property finance. Under this umbrella, she also offers easy to follow, jargon-free advice, masterclass night-school programs, and corporate wellness programs. The girls discuss Katherine’s origin story, traps for young players in the home loan and property finance game, managing expectations on the complexity and dynamic nature of property financing, money management in the time of Covid, and how to identify opportunities for those with some funding available now. How do you make a house into a home? What is that indescribable feeling you get from a beautifully, purposefully styled space and how can you create it in your projects? How many questions can I throw at you before you get sick of this teaser? The answers to these questions and more in this week’s episode of Building with BuildHer featuring Tara Wokulski - an accomplished interior stylist and founder of Melbourne-based interior styling studio, Coco Camellia. Tara began life as a nurse and turned her fierce work ethic and healing powers towards interior design to cure the disease of hypo-stylism (translation: lack of style). The catalyst for this change of scenery was the unfortunate rocky start to life for Tara’s first born which made it too hard for her to return to her nursing work. Her father-in-law offered her a granny-flat style space on their property to free up her money for their little one’s hospital bills. During some downtime, Tara felt it important to make this space their own; to make it their home. This meant styling, and it was this experience that sparked a joy of interior design and birthed her ever-evolving social media gallery of her life’s work to date. Her social media presence rapidly grew soon becoming an educational resource for others striving to turn the place they live in into their home. Given the financially tumultuous phase of her life that her love of styling grew out of, her early work was centred around value for money, an element she has carried with her throughout her career to date: styling on a budget. Appropriately, we met Tara on Instagram, perusing her amazing work, and a personal and professional relationship blossomed quickly after that. Tara talks about styling on a budget, being aware of trends but not defining your style with them, keeping timelessness in mind, and hiring the right stylist for your job. And remember, rugs under couches, not in front of them! TOPICS WE COVER AND WHEN TO FIND THEM: [2:38] - Tara’s origin story [5:45] - Styling on a budget [7:00] - Selecting timeless pieces instead of following trends [8:20] - Investing time to ensure longevity in your design [10:04] - Working within your own budget no matter if it’s small, medium or high [10:34] - Understanding what your key pieces are and how they can be applied to your budget to incorporate the higher-end timeless pieces with the lower budget pieces [10:54] - Where to start when wanting to upgrade the style in your home [11:30] - Using sheer curtains to vary the mood and light in a room [13:10] - How updating the wall colour with a fresh paint job immediately changes the feel of a room/house [14:20] - The use of rugs to unite zones within a space [15:30] - Knowing how to place furniture to make a room feel bigger [17:34] - What to make sure you have organised before hiring a stylist or designer [18:30] - Picking a stylist that suits your personality. Who would you want working on your heart? An orthopaedic surgeon? A dermatologist? No, you want a cardiac surgeon - a specialised expert in the field. The same goes for kitchens - the heart of the house. You don’t want just any interior designer, you want someone specialising in kitchens so you’re not left with a bum ticker. Our guest today is Rachel Collard (get ready for the accolades) - a BuildHer Collective member, a qualified interior stylist, with an award-winning career in kitchen design, a stint on The Block, mother of three, and formally trained psychologist (phew!). This woman knows how to understand clients’ needs in the kitchen and how to put that into practice. More importantly, she knows well the functionality that is so dearly needed in a great kitchen. She has spent just shy of a decade designing kitchens for Freedom and founded Co.Kitchens in 2016 - a boutique, Melbourne-based company offering custom kitchen design consultancy. Speaking to the importance of the kitchen, Rachel herself says, “Kitchens are the soul to every home – it’s where some of the best memories are created and traditions are passed down from generations: everything else should just work to compliment the true heart of the home.” This critical space is often the giver-of-first-impressions to prospective buyers and is thus analysed with great care prior to making any offers on the property. If the kitchen does not need to be done, the rest of the house will be easily customised and personalised. However, if flaws are seen in a kitchen’s design, it is often a dealbreaker. Rachel and Rebeka discussed the importance of hiring a stylist for the kitchen design phase, designing for functionality and aesthetics on a budget, the rookie mistake of forcing what’s trending into your kitchen, and having foresight in your design. TOPICS WE COVER AND WHEN TO FIND THEM: [2:52] - Key takeaways for designing your kitchen for the first time [3:27] - Functionality and how you work as a family [3:54] - Pros and cons of a butler’s pantry [5:36] - Rebeka’s shocking admission to leaving the house with the oven on [6:06] - Getting your architect/draftsperson and your kitchen designer in at the same time [7:01] - If you’re using a draftsperson, a designer can help to solidify the drawings and protect practicality [8:35] - The finality of kitchen design and getting it right the first time [9:27] - Designing for the way your family uses the kitchen [10:54] - Appliance placement taking into account activity in the kitchen [12:33] - Finding the right designer/architect/contractor for your job and the way you see your kitchen working [13:29] - Incorporating a mudroom into your design for busy families to best accommodate the natural flow [14:56] - Balancing our budget and expectations of what we can achieve [15:19] - Two minds are better than one - collaborating with a stylist will help you find any flaws in your design before you start building/renovating [16:41] - Drawing on inspiration from other designers. Everything has been done before - it’s about making little changes to suit your specific needs [17:54] - Spending a lot of money doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get the best looking kitchen [19:07] - Don’t get stuck on what’s trending: focus on what you love [19:34] - Factoring in longevity at the design phase: consider features that can be refreshed to allow budget-friendly periodic updates [20:43] - Choosing kitchen appliances when it comes to budget and price per item [23:25] - Rachel, Rebeka, and Mel’s roles in the BuildHer Collective and ways to get in touch LINKS WE MENTIONED: Co.Kitchens by Rachel Collard website Check out the BuildHer freebies page and book your free 20min consult BuildHer Collective website BuildHer Collective on Instagram

Who here trusts their bullshit-detector? Their in-built radar that picks up lies, false-promises, exaggerations, inflated sales-speak, and the untrustworthy. We have all got one and this particular piece of kit is one you need by your side on every job site. When presented with a problem, it is not uncommon for trades to play the blame-game. “My plastering isn’t perfect because the carpenter didn’t square the walls”, “I wouldn’t have chosen that grout”, “Your building surveyor should have picked that up before I started”, “Your draftsperson didn’t specify that in the drawings.” And it goes on. On-site, you need to know who to trust and calling “Bullshit” on blame and problem-focused discussions is a big part of that. Join Rebeka and Kribashini as they shoot for the Guinness world record for saying “Bullshit” the most in a single podcast episode. Learn how to detect and call-out unproductive behaviour on your build site to create a solution-oriented culture that fosters successful projects. TOPICS WE COVER: There are many ways to complete a task. Watch for tradies that belittle the previous tradesperson’s job to gain your trust Following on from this, detecting blame-centred discussions and putting a stop to them “I could’ve done that cheaper” is not helpful to hear - call bullshit! Focusing on the task at hand, not what someone else has done in the past The age-old battle between carpenters and plasterers Most things aren’t that big of a deal and can be fixed. We made a Mother's Day episode without even meaning to! This week we're keepin' pregnant women out of jail, creating art for moms and kids awaiting their asylum hearings, advocating for medical cannabis for more Texans, and trying to protect black and brown lives from an unfair criminal justice system. Good thing we didn't wear mascara today. PRESENTING SPONSOR: Today's episode of The Rabble is brought to you by… ROUSER! Did you know that you can hire us to throw events? This past Sunday we threw a book launch party for political photographer Casey Chapman-Ross, who said it was beyond everything she'd hoped for. We turned out a couple hundred people to The Butterfly Bar here in Austin, where we moderated a panel of fierce female activists, played a trivia game about where famous Texan rabble-rousers got their start, and heard from pint-sized lemonade stand activists. We get real about the frustrating aspects of periods, from clots to cramps, from bleed-outs to perimenopause and that tricky moment you realize that your white hot rage about your husband not emptying the dishwasher might actually be fueled by PMS. Oops.  Links We Mentioned in Episode 2 Kristen has had good success with methylated folate supplements to regulate hormones.  Sarah is a fan of magnesium supplements to mitigate PMS symptoms.  We recommend the book Female Brain Gone Insane for anyone in that tricky late 30's – 40's phase of perimenopause.  The Flo app is perfect for tracking your cycle and everything that goes along with it. We discussed period panties and the diva cup. In our next few episodes, we are talking about the Meyer's Brigg's personality types. If you've never figured out your type, check out this Meyer's Briggs online test for free. It's fascinating and informative. We stand witness that Wonderbrow is worth the hype.
