Six people were taken to a local hospital and nine people were treated at the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue after a fire involving a DART train occurred Wednesday afternoon. Between 10 to 15 people were evacuated from one of the transit cars after a fire was reported on the train near the Pearl and Arts District station. In other news, a ban on retail products containing THC won overwhelming support for the second time this year in the Texas Senate on Wednesday, even as the shadow of another veto by Gov. Greg Abbott hangs over its passage into law; frustration over the way Texas uses computers to grade students' essays on the STAAR test is building after Dallas ISD officials again saw more than one-third of the exams they submitted for review come back with higher scores; and a whiff of optimism has spilled into the Pleasant Grove community with improvements led by The Loop Dallas, a nonprofit that's steering a mammoth 50-mile trail around the city. Plus Kerr County says crews are still going door-to-door to check on everyone, and they're also still tallying damage from the flash floods, the Texas Senate has failed to take up legislation that would ban the sale of any consumable hemp products that contain THC, Arike Ogunbowale makes Dallas Wings history with 20 points and a career-best 14 assists, and more!

Plus, two people were killed early Thursday morning in separate officer-involved shootings in Haltom City and Lewisville, and the Texas Senate could vote Thursday on a bill that would ban consumable THC.
A near-total ban on consumable hemp-based THC products advanced in a key Texas Senate panel Tuesday, in apparent defiance of Gov. Greg Abbott who last month told lawmakers he wanted them to regulate the $8 billion industry, not outlaw it. Senate Bill 5, by Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, would criminalize gummies, vapes, drinks, snacks and smokable flowers containing any amount of the psychoactive compound THC, including marijuana and hemp. In other news, when Texas public school students return for classes this fall, their clubs and classrooms will be subject to a new DEI ban. Senate Bill 12 — signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott — prohibits diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in K-12 schools; the Professional Bull Riders association is objecting to the bankruptcy proceedings of Phil McGraw's Merit Street Media, as part of an effort to recover disputed claims it estimates at $181 million; and for more than two months, chef Carlos Rodriguez, the owner of Fuego Burger in Fort Worth, has been using a cane due to a fracture he suffered after being attacked at his restaurant. He said he had two fractures and a torn ligament in his knee. He started a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $50,000 to cover his surgery and other injury-related expenses. As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $6,700. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Join Jim and Greg for Wednesday's 3 Martini Lunch as they examine Major League Baseball's return to Atlanta for the All-Star Game four years after Democrats pressured the league to pull the event over Georgia's election integrity law. They also dig into the ridiculously slow wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles County and break down what could be a wild U.S. Senate race in Texas next year.First, they're glad to see the all-star game back in Georgia, where it was originally scheduled in 2021 before Commissioner Rob Manfred moved it under political pressure. Democrats claimed Georgia's election law was “Jim Crow 2.0,” but two election cycles later, record turnout disproves those claims. Jim and Greg ask whether Manfred, the media, or top Democrats will ever acknowledge how wrong they were, or apologize to Gov. Brian Kemp for likening him to segregationists and the confederacy?Next, they fume as little more than a hundred building permits have been issued in Los Angeles County in the six months since the devastating wildfires. Jim says this is a perfect example of how the blue state, big government approach to problems grinds progress to a halt and how Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom have failed. Greg offers insights on why the media won't criticize Newsom and Bass over this. Finally, they look ahead to the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate race, where new polling suggests Rep. Jasmine Crockett could dominate the Democratic primary if she runs. The GOP primary has plenty of its own drama as Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton battle for the nomination. Many in the MAGA base are disappointed in Cornyn but Paxton brings his own baggage, including a very public divorce that was just announced. Please visit our great sponsors:Stop putting off those doctors' appointments and go to https://zocdoc.com/3ML to find and instantly book a top rated doctor today. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Thursday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Superman Fans Go After Clay A fiery and humorous critique of Hollywood’s political messaging, with a sharp focus on the controversy surrounding the new Superman movie directed by James Gunn. The hosts open with a lighthearted jab at CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and his infamous Jeopardy performance, using it as a springboard to discuss media credibility and public perception. The bulk of the hour centers on the Superman movie backlash, where Clay Travis criticizes Gunn’s framing of Superman as an immigrant and the broader trend of injecting progressive politics into iconic characters. Travis argues that Superman should remain an apolitical symbol of universal values like truth and justice, not a vehicle for modern immigration debates. The hosts explore whether Superman is better understood as an asylum seeker rather than an immigrant, given his extraterrestrial origins and adoption by American parents. OH Rep. Jim Jordan Congressman Jim Jordan tout the recently passed Big Beautiful Bill’s middle-class tax cuts, investment in border security, and pro-growth reforms. They argue it will stimulate job creation, repatriate manufacturing, and shield Americans from inflation-driven tax hikes. The show also covers the evolving landscape of college athletics, focusing on bipartisan legislation to regulate NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) compensation. Congressman Jordan outlines a proposed federal framework to protect student-athletes, enforce agent transparency, and establish eligibility standards—aiming to bring order to what he calls a “broken” system. The interview wraps with President Trump’s rumored plans for a UFC fight on the White House lawn. TX Sen. John Cornyn A sobering update from Texas Senator John Cornyn on the devastating Hill Country flooding, which has claimed over 120 lives and left 170 missing. The hosts and Senator Cornyn explore the urgent need for improved flood warning systems and emergency preparedness, especially for nighttime disasters. Listeners are encouraged to support Texas flood victims through fundraising efforts promoted on ClayandBuck.com. The conversation shifts to a shocking ambush on federal law enforcement officers in Alvarado, Texas, where 11 suspects have been charged. Senator Cornyn condemns the attack and links it to escalating anti-police rhetoric, emphasizing the need for strong support of ICE and law enforcement agencies. Illegal immigration and border security take center stage as Cornyn praises the Trump administration’s efforts to restore control at the southern border. He highlights the renewed morale among Border Patrol agents and the shift from humanitarian overload to national security enforcement. Run Jasmine, Run! The high-stakes 2026 Texas Senate race. Senator Cornyn discusses potential challengers, including Ken Paxton and Jasmine Crockett, and the strategic importance of maintaining Republican control in a politically pivotal state. The hosts speculate on whether President Trump will weigh in on the primary, underscoring the national implications of the race. Little Gov. Dan Patrick says this has been a "boring session" for him. Why would that be? Health care workers in Texas would have whistleblower protections for reporting legal, regulatory and ethical violations under a bill the Senate passed Thursday. The lawmakers voted 21-10 to send the proposal to the House. In other news, police are seeking the public's help to find a 76-year-old woman who was taken from an assisted living facility in Denton earlier this week. Karen May Taube was last seen about 5 p.m. Monday. A Silver Alert was issued Tuesday. An arrest warrant has been obtained for Eva Haron of Michigan. Haron and Taube's whereabouts were unknown Thursday, but police said the pair may be traveling together in a white 2018 Ford F150 with Michigan license plate DXZ9489. Also, Post Malone will headline the 2025 Cattle Baron's Ball, an annual North Texas party that's the world's largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. With a chance to end the series at Canada Life Centre in Game 5 in Winnipeg, the Stars offense went cold again, as the Jets secured a 4-0 win to force Game 6. The Stars still hold a 3-2 series lead with the opportunity to end it on home ice on Saturday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It will be easier than ever for parents to opt their children out of public school vaccine requirements under a bill given initial passage in the Texas House late Tuesday. In other news, School leaders and advocates worry that the Texas Senate is dragging its feet to deliver on promises to provide the largest infusion of state dollars into public education; after multiple break-ins and animal thefts at Texas zoos in recent years, state zoos have teamed up with advocacy groups and elected officials to support a couple of bills in the Texas Legislature that could provide some relief. House Bill 1720 and Senate Bill 2969 will strengthen the penalties for trespassing at zoological facilities and create penalties surrounding habitat intrusions; and the Dallas Stars are on the verge of eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup playoffs after a 3-1 win at the American Airlines Center last night. The third member of the Stars' Finnish line, Mikeal Granlund scored a hat trick. It was the third hat trick in the last five games for Dallas but Granlund's first since 2017. The series heads back to Winnipeg for game 5 on Thursday night. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
With less than a 2 percent chance of landing the first overall pick in Monday evening's NBA draft lottery, the ping pong ball popped up for the Mavericks, securing the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft. With that top pick, it gives Dallas the ability to land Duke's Cooper Flagg, the consensus top selection. In other news, Dallas' Office of Equity and Inclusion, which was heavily featured in the region's human rights proposal required to host next year's FIFA World Cup, could be on the chopping block if a Texas Senate bill intended to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion departments in local governments becomes law; the Texas House overwhelmingly endorsed a bill that would fund a grant program for research and medical trials ibogaine, a centuries-old psychoactive drug derived from a plant indigenous to Central Africa, increasingly viewed by the medical and science community as the next big hope in trauma, depression, addiction and brain injury treatment; and the Dallas Cowboys will open the upcoming NFL season on the road against Super Bowl Champ Philadelphia on Thursday, September 4. On Friday's show: Two bills related to abortion passed the Texas Senate this week. One seeks to clarify when doctors can perform abortions if medically necessary under the state's near-total ban. The other would allow anyone who mails or delivers abortion pills to someone in Texas to be sued for $100,000. Both bills must now clear the Texas House. Eleanor Klibanoff of The Texas Tribune provides details on both measures. Also this hour: A recent report ranked Houston as one of the unhappiest cities in America. Really? Whether you agree with that or not, we try to prove them wrong by having listeners and some guests share what they're happy about. Share yours now at talk@houstonmatters.org.Then, from the USDA halting a new rule requiring poultry companies to keep levels of salmonella bacteria under a certain level, to a company using what's essentially an AI-powered mood ring to build emotional trust in relationships, we break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And we talk with the outgoing Houston Poet Laureate, Aris Kian, and her successor, Reyes Ramirez.
The Texas Senate approved a bill Wednesday that takes aim at the State Fair of Texas' gun ban. The policy was put in place last year after a gunman shot three fairgoers in 2023. Tthe bill's author, state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Rockwall, said the move denied “citizens their right to self-defense.” The legislation, headed to the Texas House of Representatives, would prevent contractors from banning guns in government-owned public spaces, unless state law says otherwise. In other news, detainees at the Bluebonnet immigrant detention center in the small city of Anson, about 200 miles west of Dallas sent the outside world a message this week: S-O-S; in a surprising alliance, the Texas oil and gas lobby has joined forces with renewable energy developers to sink a proposal that would require all existing solar and wind generators to guarantee they can provide power when needed; nd the Dallas Stars are one win away from advancing out of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and ending the Colorado Avalanche's season. The Stars won Game 5 in a convincing fashion to take a 3 games to 2 lead in the series that returns to Denver for Game 6 tonight. NHL teams that hold a 3-2 series lead win the series 79% of the time. In the last 30 years in Dallas, they've had even better results, winning 94.1% of the time with a 16-1 series record after holding the 3-2 advantage. Learn more about your ad choices. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick points out that the Texas Senate has pass all top 40 “priority bills.” The Senate has, as of Friday, passed 631 bills while the BurrowCrat House has passed only 182. Both officially began work on the same day but as usual the House plays around with its internal politics for months before getting to the work it must do in the 140-day session. And speaking of convening for legislative work, Senator Birdwell has gotten a bill out of the Senate to the House that allows the Legislature to come back into session after the deadline for the governor to veto bills for the purpose of overriding vetoes. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.More evidence of how much legitimate bail reform is needed, a job the Texas House has failed on in the past: Harris County Magistrates Awarded More than 10,000 PR Bonds for Felonies in 2024.Governor Abbott goes after the City of San Marcos and its anti-Israel resolution.Abbott and Nimm appointed by President Trump to the new FEMA Review Council.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. A bill that would clarify when Texas physicians can legally perform an abortion to save a mother's life unanimously passed the state Senate on Tuesday. Senate Bill 31, also known as the Life of the Mother Act, would allow doctors to intervene and provide abortion care to pregnant women who are experiencing medical emergencies. In other news, Texas health officials reported 17 new measles cases on Tuesday, bringing the total confirmed cases since late January to 663. The state's public health department estimates that fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases — about 1% — are “actively infectious.”; one Monday last fall, only about half of Cleburne students showed up to class. The reason for such low attendance? Families were fearful after threats of violence against Cleburne ISD campuses had zoomed across Snapchat in the days before. Similar scares have become common, a trend that's strained police resources, led to the arrests of young children and interrupted students' focus in the classroom; and H-E-B is ready to open its first namesake store in North Texas. The company will officially launch on May 14 in Melissa at 6 a.m. The San Antonio grocer's new store is at 1230 Central Expressway, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 121. 0:24 - So, it's 2025. I know. I have NO idea why my brain said 2023 and I said it. None. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ This week on tWiRE: This Week in Real Estate, lawsuits, legislation, and market turbulence take center stage. Compass has launched a legal missile at the Northwest MLS, dragging Windermere into the crossfire—claiming the cost of “waging war” is weighing them down. Meanwhile, a Texas Senate bill is aiming to dismantle NAR's controversial hate speech policy, igniting a fresh political battle in the real estate world. Vrbo gets slammed over a misleading Super Bowl ad after a complaint by Airbnb, proving that in the short-term rental wars, no move goes unchecked. On the market side, homebuyer mortgage demand continues to dip amid mounting economic uncertainty, even as mortgage rates ease slightly. Sellers still want $39,000 more than buyers are willing to pay, and home prices are now falling in 11 of the 50 largest U.S. metros—especially in parts of Florida, Texas, and the Bay Area. But it's not all doom and gloom: pending home sales spiked 6.1% in March, hinting at a potential wave of pent-up demand. And in Houston, the legendary “Darth Vader House” finally sold for $3.4 million—set for a villain-to-visionary rebrand.
