Little Gov. Dan Patrick says this has been a "boring session" for him. Why would that be? Well, maybe it's because the Texas House is doing just about whatever the right-wing Texas Senate wants even though Speaker Dustin Burrows was elected with a majority Democratic coalition. Plus, the fight over Medicaid cuts gets downright nasty in Washington and Sen. Ted Cruz has serious concerns about President Trump accepting a gift of a luxury jet from a foreign government. Health care workers in Texas would have whistleblower protections for reporting legal, regulatory and ethical violations under a bill the Senate passed Thursday. The lawmakers voted 21-10 to send the proposal to the House. In other news, police are seeking the public's help to find a 76-year-old woman who was taken from an assisted living facility in Denton earlier this week. Karen May Taube was last seen about 5 p.m. Monday. A Silver Alert was issued Tuesday. An arrest warrant has been obtained for Eva Haron of Michigan. Haron and Taube's whereabouts were unknown Thursday, but police said the pair may be traveling together in a white 2018 Ford F150 with Michigan license plate DXZ9489. Also, Post Malone will headline the 2025 Cattle Baron's Ball, an annual North Texas party that's the world's largest single-night fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. And the Dallas Stars will at the very least, need another game to clinch their spot in the Western Conference finals. With a chance to end the series at Canada Life Centre in Game 5 in Winnipeg, the Stars offense went cold again, as the Jets secured a 4-0 win to force Game 6. The Stars still hold a 3-2 series lead with the opportunity to end it on home ice on Saturday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It will be easier than ever for parents to opt their children out of public school vaccine requirements under a bill given initial passage in the Texas House late Tuesday. In other news, School leaders and advocates worry that the Texas Senate is dragging its feet to deliver on promises to provide the largest infusion of state dollars into public education; after multiple break-ins and animal thefts at Texas zoos in recent years, state zoos have teamed up with advocacy groups and elected officials to support a couple of bills in the Texas Legislature that could provide some relief. House Bill 1720 and Senate Bill 2969 will strengthen the penalties for trespassing at zoological facilities and create penalties surrounding habitat intrusions; and the Dallas Stars are on the verge of eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in the Stanley Cup playoffs after a 3-1 win at the American Airlines Center last night. The third member of the Stars' Finnish line, Mikeal Granlund scored a hat trick. It was the third hat trick in the last five games for Dallas but Granlund's first since 2017. With less than a 2 percent chance of landing the first overall pick in Monday evening's NBA draft lottery, the ping pong ball popped up for the Mavericks, securing the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft. With that top pick, it gives Dallas the ability to land Duke's Cooper Flagg, the consensus top selection. In other news, Dallas' Office of Equity and Inclusion, which was heavily featured in the region's human rights proposal required to host next year's FIFA World Cup, could be on the chopping block if a Texas Senate bill intended to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion departments in local governments becomes law; the Texas House overwhelmingly endorsed a bill that would fund a grant program for research and medical trials ibogaine, a centuries-old psychoactive drug derived from a plant indigenous to Central Africa, increasingly viewed by the medical and science community as the next big hope in trauma, depression, addiction and brain injury treatment; and the Dallas Cowboys will open the upcoming NFL season on the road against Super Bowl Champ Philadelphia on Thursday, September 4. On Friday's show: Two bills related to abortion passed the Texas Senate this week. One seeks to clarify when doctors can perform abortions if medically necessary under the state's near-total ban. The other would allow anyone who mails or delivers abortion pills to someone in Texas to be sued for $100,000. Both bills must now clear the Texas House. Eleanor Klibanoff of The Texas Tribune provides details on both measures. Also this hour: A recent report ranked Houston as one of the unhappiest cities in America. Really? Whether you agree with that or not, we try to prove them wrong by having listeners and some guests share what they're happy about. Part 1:We talk with Harvey Kronberg, Publisher of the Texas Quorum Report. We discuss how Gov. Abbott has characterized criticism of Israel as 'anti-Israel' policies, and therefore 'anti-Texas' policies. We also discuss the latest Texas Senate-adopted criminalizing the 'morning-after' pill. This, despite Texas having a high maternal mortality rate. Since the Dobbs decision, the number of abortions has increased nationwide. We discuss the upcoming elections in Texas. Cornyn, Paxton, and possible candidates for the governorship. The Texas economy is contracting. The amounts collected by sales taxes have declined. Texas has no income tax. The Texas Senate approved a bill Wednesday that takes aim at the State Fair of Texas' gun ban. The policy was put in place last year after a gunman shot three fairgoers in 2023. Tthe bill's author, state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Rockwall, said the move denied “citizens their right to self-defense.” The legislation, headed to the Texas House of Representatives, would prevent contractors from banning guns in government-owned public spaces, unless state law says otherwise. In other news, detainees at the Bluebonnet immigrant detention center in the small city of Anson, about 200 miles west of Dallas sent the outside world a message this week: S-O-S; in a surprising alliance, the Texas oil and gas lobby has joined forces with renewable energy developers to sink a proposal that would require all existing solar and wind generators to guarantee they can provide power when needed; nd the Dallas Stars are one win away from advancing out of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and ending the Colorado Avalanche's season. The Stars won Game 5 in a convincing fashion to take a 3 games to 2 lead in the series that returns to Denver for Game 6 tonight. NHL teams that hold a 3-2 series lead win the series 79% of the time. In the last 30 years in Dallas, they've had even better results, winning 94.1% of the time with a 16-1 series record after holding the 3-2 advantage. Learn more about your ad choices. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick points out that the Texas Senate has pass all top 40 “priority bills.” The Senate has, as of Friday, passed 631 bills while the BurrowCrat House has passed only 182. Both officially began work on the same day but as usual the House plays around with its internal politics for months before getting to the work it must do in the 140-day session. And speaking of convening for legislative work, Senator Birdwell has gotten a bill out of the Senate to the House that allows the Legislature to come back into session after the deadline for the governor to veto bills for the purpose of overriding vetoes. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.More evidence of how much legitimate bail reform is needed, a job the Texas House has failed on in the past: Harris County Magistrates Awarded More than 10,000 PR Bonds for Felonies in 2024.Governor Abbott goes after the City of San Marcos and its anti-Israel resolution.Abbott and Nimm appointed by President Trump to the new FEMA Review Council.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. A bill that would clarify when Texas physicians can legally perform an abortion to save a mother's life unanimously passed the state Senate on Tuesday. Senate Bill 31, also known as the Life of the Mother Act, would allow doctors to intervene and provide abortion care to pregnant women who are experiencing medical emergencies. In other news, Texas health officials reported 17 new measles cases on Tuesday, bringing the total confirmed cases since late January to 663. The state's public health department estimates that fewer than 10 of the confirmed cases — about 1% — are “actively infectious.”; one Monday last fall, only about half of Cleburne students showed up to class. The reason for such low attendance? Families were fearful after threats of violence against Cleburne ISD campuses had zoomed across Snapchat in the days before. Similar scares have become common, a trend that's strained police resources, led to the arrests of young children and interrupted students' focus in the classroom; and H-E-B is ready to open its first namesake store in North Texas. The company will officially launch on May 14 in Melissa at 6 a.m. The San Antonio grocer's new store is at 1230 Central Expressway, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 121. 0:24 - So, it's 2025. I know. I have NO idea why my brain said 2023 and I said it. None. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ This week on tWiRE: This Week in Real Estate, lawsuits, legislation, and market turbulence take center stage. Compass has launched a legal missile at the Northwest MLS, dragging Windermere into the crossfire—claiming the cost of “waging war” is weighing them down. Meanwhile, a Texas Senate bill is aiming to dismantle NAR's controversial hate speech policy, igniting a fresh political battle in the real estate world. Vrbo gets slammed over a misleading Super Bowl ad after a complaint by Airbnb, proving that in the short-term rental wars, no move goes unchecked. On the market side, homebuyer mortgage demand continues to dip amid mounting economic uncertainty, even as mortgage rates ease slightly. Sellers still want $39,000 more than buyers are willing to pay, and home prices are now falling in 11 of the 50 largest U.S. metros—especially in parts of Florida, Texas, and the Bay Area. But it's not all doom and gloom: pending home sales spiked 6.1% in March, hinting at a potential wave of pent-up demand. And in Houston, the legendary “Darth Vader House” finally sold for $3.4 million—set for a villain-to-visionary rebrand.

On Monday's show: With the passing of Pope Francis, we talk about his time in the role and the legacy he leaves behind. Then, we discuss SB3, a bill designed to ban THC in Texas, and what comes next after it passed the Texas Senate. Also this hour: On this day in 1836, Texas forces won the Battle of San Jacinto, concluding the Texas Revolution. We revisit a conversation about the original Texans who sought independence from Mexico and sparked the revolution. And we revisit a conversation about the Turtle Bayou Resolutions and how they set the stage for the revolution in the first place. Then, veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller answers questions about pet health. And we get an update on the Rockets loss in Game 1 of the NBA Playoffs and other developments in sports from Jeff Balke.
On Friday's show: A bill to greatly expand efforts to lure film and TV production to Texas using incentives paid for by sales tax revenues has passed the Texas Senate and now heads to the House for consideration. We learn more about Senate Bill 22 and what it might do for film and TV production in the state. Also this hour: From backlash over this week's celebrity-studded, all-female, Blue Origin spaceflight, to prospects getting slimmer for a Houston-to-Dallas high-speed rail line, to a human chain moving a bookstore down the street, a single book at a time, we hash out The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And we discuss how to best declutter, downsize, and get rid of all the stuff in our lives.
We jumped right in this week because most of the Texas Impact staff stayed up late Wednesday night to watch SB 2, the Texas Senate's school voucher bill, be brought before the House. There were some great and no-so-great conversations between legislators about the impact of a bill that appropriates a billion dollars that could go to public schools to privately run entities, and many amendments that aimed to fix issues with the bill be ultimately tabled with little to no debate. We are tired, we are cranky, but we are glad to have Bee Moorhead, Texas Impact's Executive Director, with us to parse through what happened Wednesday night, how we got here and what conversations might look like in the aftermath of the passing of SB2—Spoiler Alert: they may be awkward, but nevertheless important. Once again, Democrats are outnumbered in the Texas Senate, leaving them little to do to fight Republican priorities. It's a winner-take-all session, according to our guest, Sen. Sarah Eckhardt, D-Austin, and things are looking “pretty nasty, brutish, and short.” So, where does she get her encouragement? And, where does she think Democrats can effect change? Eckhardt joins host Nikki DaVaughn to discuss it all, plus how she's seeing Trumpism play out in Austin. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The Texas Senate passed SB1, it's version of the Texas budget, unanimously – no wonder Dems went along as some say it is 40% larger than the last two state budgets. As the days on the Texas Legislative calendar tick away, lawmakers' pace of work is speeding up — and they're still keeping at least one eye on Austin. While the bill to turn Austin into the “District of Austin” probably won't go far, one that would ban all consumable hemp products in the state has already passed the Texas Senate. Other legislation targets Project Connect, short-term rentals, and strangely enough, “furries,” or dressing up like animals, in Texas schools. On Monday's show: State government can move fast or slow. Consider the speed with which the Texas Senate passed a bill calling for public schools to display the Ten Commandments, and how, so far, Gov. News 88.7's Andrew Schneider updates us on both stories. Also this hour: We discuss the latest developments in residential real estate here in Greater Houston, which has long been a seller's market, with the help of Florian Martin of the Houston Business Journal and real estate agent Kristin Pomroy. Then, columnist Dwight Silverman talks about some recent developments in consumer technology. And Jeff Balke tells us about the UH Cougars men's basketball team making its sixth straight appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and updates us on Houston sports.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick warned sellers of gummies, vapes, drinks and other retail products containing synthetic THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana – should shut their doors “voluntarily” or the state would be doing it for them. Hours later, the Texas Senate approved its bill creating a total ban on the products in a 24-7 vote, sending it to the House. In other news, a Texas House of Representatives committee moved forward a bill Wednesday that would stop non-disclosure agreements from being used to silence sexual abuse survivors; the second Joe V's Smart Shop in North Texas is expected to open its doors soon. The price-conscious grocery store, part of H-E-B, is set to welcome customers on Wednesday, the 26th; And in less than six decades, hunters have contributed more than five billion dollars for conservation in the state, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. One of the ways Texas is raising money for conservation is through exotic hunts. The Dallas Morning News shadowed a hunt in Texas Hill Country for two exotic breeds of antelope to learn about conservation and how hunting, especially on state land, can support wildlife research and habitat management across Texas.
