On Sunday, July 2, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Giovanni Serrato shared a message about Jesus' instruction to establish our lives wisely, building them on a firm foundation on Christ who is our Rock.Luke 6:46-49 (ESV)“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”https://bit.ly/Luke6_46-49ESV
On Sunday, June 18, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Brook Fonceca shared a message about Jesus' instruction to not judge one another. We look at why we judge, what judging does to us, and following Jesus' example in response to judging.Luke 6:37-42 (NIV)“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.https://bit.ly/Luke6_37-42NIV
On Sunday, June 11, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about loving your enemies and regarding them as friends because our enemies reveal our hearts, God's heart, and they set you free to become like Jesus. “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.Luke 6:27-36 (NIV)https://bit.ly/Luke6_27-36NIV
On Sunday, June 4, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Brook Fonceca shared a message from Jesus' command, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) When we choose to take a stance of non-violence, we have the opportunity to discern the situation, recognize the need, and employ our resources to stand in the gap for someone, honoring them and loving them as Jesus does. “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. On Sunday, May 21, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about Jesus' first public teaching, continuing with the final passages of the Beatitudes about enduring rejection for Jesus' sake. Jesus teaches that rejection will come to those whose lives are dedicated to the Lord. We are part of a long line of those who know rejection, but who have also turned that rejection into an opportunity to rejoice. Jesus reminds us that our rejection in this world will result in a blessing in God's kingdom and in heaven to come. Luke 6:22-23, 26 (NIV)Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult youand reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.https://bit.ly/Luke6_22-23_26NIV
On Sunday, May 28, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about Jesus' first public teaching, continuing with the passage after the Beatitudes about loving your enemies. Jesus teaches that we have the opportunity to break the cycle of violence by loving, serving, blessing, and praying for those who hate and mistreat us. This is the Gospel way of God's kingdom.“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.Luke 6:27-28 (NIV)https://bit.ly/Luke6_27-28NIV
On Sunday, May 14, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about Jesus' first public teaching, which is the Beatitudes, and explains how to know we are blessed. 1. The blessed know their need for God. 2. The blessed long for connection with God.3. The blessed trust God with the now and the future. Luke 6:20-21 (NIV)Looking at his disciples, he said:“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”https://bit.ly/Luke6_20-21NIV
On Sunday, May 7, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about how Jesus healed many people on one occasion. From this story, we see that Jesus wanted to teach his disciples how to see the people as he does, to see their needs, and to acknowledge Jesus as the source of their healing. Luke 6:17-19 (NIV)He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.https://bit.ly/Luke6_17-19NIV
On Sunday, April 30, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice led us through an exploration of three themes found in this passage. 1) The key to Jesus' life and ministry was prayer, submitting himself to God his Father. 2) When Jesus had important decisions, he would spend the night in prayer. Jesus' example is saying to God, “Not my will, but yours be done.” 3) The decision in this passage was for the Twelve Disciples, but we discover that we are chosen by God in Christ when people have prayed for us to know Jesus. Prayer is the key to bringing our loved ones into God's family.Luke 6:12-16 (NIV)One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.https://bit.ly/Luke6_1-11NIV
On Sunday, April 23, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message reminding us that Jesus came to set us free from the Law. As we let Jesus set us free, we're invited to allow him to silence our inner critic. Finally, Jesus wants to lead us with love, grace, compassion, and truth so that we might be his representatives in our world. Luke 6:1-11 (NIV)One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.https://bit.ly/Luke6_1-11NIV

On Sunday, February 27, 2022, Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message in person and online via YouTube Live. Pastor Stuart continues our series in the Gospel of Luke, encouraging us to set aside the Sabbath for relationships, pausing, and building trust with the Lord and those closest to us. Luke 6:1-5 (NIV)One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you." These commands, and others from Jesus, sound downright impossible to many of us. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus says the blessed are the poor, hungry, weeping, and hated. So who isn't blessed? Those who are rich, full, laughing, and spoken well of! Sabbath and the People of God Thomas Robinson, Luke: Anointed with God's Spirit 15, November 7, 2021 Luke6:1-16 Trans.TR Jesus' Disciples Pick Grain on the Sabbath 1 And it happened one Sabbath, that Jesus was walking through the standing grain, and his disciples started plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 Now, some of the Pharisees asked them, “Why are you doing what's not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 Then in response Jesus asked them, “Didn't you ever read what David did when he himself was hungry, along with those with him? 4 How he entered into the house of God, and then taking the Loaves of the Presentation, he ate them and gave to those with him [1 Sam 21:1-6]. And it's not lawful for any to eat those loaves, except only the priests?” 5 And he used to say to them, “The Son of the Human is Lord of the Sabbath.” Jesus Restores a Man's Crippled Hand on the Sabbath 6 And it happened on another Sabbath, that he entered the synagogue and was teaching. Now a man was there, and his right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees were closely watching Jesus, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, because they wanted to find a reason to accuse him. 8 Now he himself understood their ways of reasoning, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the center.” And he rose and stood. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I'm asking all of you, whether it's lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But these men were filled with mindless fury and they began talking intensely with each other what they might do to Jesus. Jesus Names Twelve Disciples as Emissaries 12 And it happened during these days that he went out onto the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in that prayer with God. 13 Then, when day came, he called together his disciples and selected twelve of them, and these he designated “apostles”: 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter (“Rock”), and Andrew his brother, and James (Jacob) and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called a zealot, 16 and Judas (Judah) the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a betrayer. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Exodus 20:8-11 From the Ten Commandments 8 Remember the Sabbath day, and consecrate it. 9 Six days you shall serve and do all your labor/occupation. 10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God; you shall not do any of your labor – you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day. Therefore, Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it. [Gn 1:1 – 2:3]

Mark2:23-28, Matt.12:1-8, Luke6:1-5. The Pharisees are following Jesus north to Galilee. They find fault with Jesus's disciples picking and processing grain on the sabbath. The Pharisees problem is the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law.

How could Joseph ever forgive his brothers for selling him into slavery and telling his father that he was dead? How powerful must that love be to break through the walls of hatred we can build around our hearts? Jesus tells us that we must love, do good to, bless, and pray for those that hate us. It is that love called agapao, the love that is wholly unmotivated by any hope of return, that we are expected to show for those that despise us. That's the point of it all: We are loving not to save their souls, but ours. Once we love like that, fully and wholly with the love God has for us, there is no turning back. The Scripture references are Genesis 45:3-11, 15, Psalm 37:1-9, and 1 Corinthians 15:35-38, 42-50. The Gospel reference is Luke6:27-38.
