This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' encore ! This week, we're headlights on a southbound train. Our hosts FiG and Knob are heading to Louisville, Kentucky. It's July 6th, 1990, and the Grateful Dead are playing at Cardinals Stadium. Along the way, discussions abound about the mixolydian scale, Dead and Co's San Francisco shows, and what makes Standing on the Moon so good. This week on the Deadpod a fine show from the spring of 1982, one often overlooked due to the notoriety of the next night's performance. This show, from April 17, 1982 in Hartford Connecticut features quite a nice first set, with fine versions of Bird Song and Jack-A-Roe (which was still relatively new at the time). I also would call your attention to the arrangement of El Paso, which is played at a much slower tempo than the usual polka arrangement, and benefits from that difference, I think. Also an interesting set closer here with 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter'. The first two songs in this set are from an audience source, the rest come from a soundboard. Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday One New Minglewood Blues [7:46] > Sugaree [12:10] > El Paso [5:19] Jack-A-Roe [4:48] Little Red Rooster [8:51] Tennessee Jed [8:44] It's All Over Now [8:18] Bird Song [9:27] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:44] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042525.mp3 My thanks for your support.
Happy Valentine's Everyone! This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA. Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there.. The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really seems to be enjoying this one as he leads the charge throughout.. A sweet Stella Blue follows then an unusual ending as instead of Around and Around we get Man Smart, Woman Smarter into Johnny B. Goode not as the encore but as the set closer. The US Blues encore is a snappy ending to the enening.. A fine second set awaits you on this week's Deadpod as we explore the second set from the band's performance at the Cumberland Coutny civic Center in Portland Maine on September 17, 1982. This is a matrix recording - but the first two songs are a mix of several audience sources as the soundboard for those doesn't seem to exist.. 'Touch of Grey' and 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' are played uptempo and crisply..Their followed by a beautiful rendition of 'High Time'; Jerry's emotive vocals just hint at how expressive this set will be. 'Estimated' follows, then a delicate 'Eyes of the World'. Following drums and space Weir teases a Spanish Jam but they eventual let Phil take the helm and lead them into the powerful 'Other One' intro.. the crowd loves it and when they finish and go into 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' there is a fair amount of sing along.. The highlight of the set in my opinion is the tremendous version of 'Morning Dew' that follows.. Jerry is at his most expressive here.. words won't do it justice. A fine 'Sugar Magnolia' closes the set and a 'US Blues' encore caps the evening... Grateful Dead Cumberland County Civic Center Portland, ME 9/17/1982 - Friday Two Touch Of Grey [6:33] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:46] ; High Time [7:16] ; Estimated Prophet [12:27] > Eyes Of The World [8:53] > Drums > Space [3:58] > The Other One [10:56] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:37] > Morning Dew [8:52] > Sugar Magnolia [8:43] Encore U.S. Blues [4:58] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod091324.mp3 May the music lift you up .. thanks for your kind support.
Holy Smokes! It's Labor Day weekend! Hopefully this second set from the second Field Trip at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds can help you get in the mood for some fun and frolic as we celebrate the passing of another summer... This one starts with the debut of 'Keep Your Day Job' -- and not in the encore slot! Another debut - 'West LA Fadeaway' is also on the menu here. The pre-drums 'Playin In the Band' lifts things up while the post drums 'Wheel'>'Other One' is probably the highlight of this set.. Jerry pulls out a very unusual 'Dupree's Diamond Blues' as the encore here which I'm sure delighted the faithful.. Hey Now, this week we'll play the second set from the band's performance on April 7, 1987 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. 'Box of Rain' is the opener here, a rather unusual choice. A short 'I Need a Miracle' follows into 'Bertha'. 'Ship of Fools' slows things down, but they then go into another crowd favorite, 'Man Smart, Women Smarter' before going into a fairly lengthy drums and Space. Out of Space, they bridge into 'Gimme Some Lovin' which then segues nicely into a fine 'Morning Dew'. A nice 'Throwing Stones' > 'Not Fade Away' combo closes the set but the band returns for a pleasing rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn'. Grateful Dead Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford , NJ 4/7/1987 - Tuesday Two Box Of Rain [5:08] I Need A Miracle [3:20] > Bertha [6:23] Ship Of Fools [8:03] Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:21] > Drums [10:31] > Space [11:#03] > Gimme Some Lovin' [4:46] > Morning Dew [10:43] > Throwing Stones [8:52] > Not Fade Away [5:02] Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:21] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041423.mp3 "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine... A fine first set from a beautiful venue is on tap for this week's Deadpod. This performance, from August 3, 1982 at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City Missouri, features a most excellent first set. Jerry brings the 'Mississippi Half-Step' to life by shaping the sound quite sweetly, and in particular the transition into 'Franklin's Tower' is not to be missed. Note the fine interplay with Phil here. It is difficult to pick out highlights in this set as everything is quite good, but note the beautiful 'Peggy O'. There's a nice transition beween 'El Paso' and 'Cumberland Blues', which is also a smoker. Jerry does 'Althea' justice with some nice soloing, and the 'Big Railroad Blues' into 'Man Smart' is an unusual pairing. All in all I think this is a fine example of the period and hope you enjoy it! Grateful Dead Starlight Theatre Kansas City, MO 8/3/1982 - Tuesday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [8:43] > Franklin's Tower [11:40] > New Minglewood Blues [7:00] ; Peggy-O [7:37] ; El Paso [4:45] > Cumberland Blues [5:44] ; Althea [8:46] ; Cassidy [6:06] ; Big Railroad Blues [5:55] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:27] ; Might As Well [4:29] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081222.mp3 Thanks for listening and of course for your kind support!
This week's Deadpod features a fine recording of the second set from the Rex Benefit that took place on March 13, 1985 at the Berkeley Community Theater. The boys give us a most excellent start with a fine 'Music Never Stopped' into 'Franklin's Tower'. While Jerry flubs a few lyrics here, he more than makes up for it with his fine soloing work. Bobby continues the first-rate performance with a great 'Estimated Prophet' into a bluesy 'Spoonful'. Hamza El-Din joins on drums and space as well as on 'Ollin Arrageed' which inexplicably, goes into a 'Man Smart/Woman Smarter'. Jerry delivers a decent 'Black Peter' but it seems clear to me that they are running out of steam by the 'Good Lovin' finale. A very nice 'Brokedown Palace' encore redeems that however and I'm sure sends everyone home smiling.. Grateful Dead Berkeley Community Theatre Berkeley, CA 3/13/85 - Wednesday Two The Music Never Stopped > Franklin's Tower > Estimated Prophet > Spoonful (1) > Drums (2) > Space (2) > Ollin Arrageed (2) > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) (2) > Black Peter (1) > Good Lovin' Encore Brokedown Palace Comments Rex Foundation Benefit ; (1) w/Matt Kelly ; (2) w/Hamza El-Din You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031822.mp3 Happy Vernal Equinox! thanks for your kind support.
This song, composed and recorded by Normal Span (King Radio) 1936, is aptly the title of our Women's Day Special episode. Many a crooner has rendered this song in their voice - from Joan Baez to Harry Belafonte to the Carpenters, Robert Palmer and even the Grateful Dead. In this podcast, the women outnumbered the men. Did we need to prove a point? Not at all. We just did it because we could. And you should too - at every possible opportunity. So why do we say that? If all countries matched our gender parity measure, we could add $12 trillion a year to the global GDP. What's more, India could add $700 billion of additional GDP in 2025, upping the country's annual GDP growth by 1.4 percentage points. So said a McKinsey Report in 2015. If that's got you hooked, then tune in to our next episode, where we banter with Aditi Rele and Aparna Saxena, two influential Women In Tech. Also, Record Your Questions / Feedback Here. Or email us at 3TB@unblox.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
This week we end the 'weekend at the beach' .. and the Days Between... with the second set from the band's performance at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on July 22, 1984. The boys break out a rockin' Samson and Delilah in honor of the Sunday, then make a sharp turn into 'Ship of Fools'. Following that, Brent breaks out 'I Just Want to Make Love To You' for the first time the band has played it since 1966. The heart of this second set goes to the Terrapin>Drumz>Space>Morning Dew that follows.. strong and out there! A nice Throwing Stones> Not Fade Away follows and the band treats the fans to a double encore of 'In the Midnight Hour' and 'Brokedown Palace'. A nice way to end the Summer Tour of 1984.. I hope you agree. Grateful Dead Ventura County Fairgrounds Ventura, CA 7/22/84 - Sunday Two Samson And Delilah [7:20] ; Ship Of Fools [7:10] ; I Just Want To Make Love To You [4:57] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:54] ; Terrapin Station [12:50] > Drums [9:27] > Space [11:07] > Morning Dew [10:36] > Throwing Stones [8:29] > Not Fade Away [9:46] Encore In The Midnight Hour [4:17] > Brokedown Palace [5:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080720.mp3 'Love is Real .. This week we feature the second set from a fine late '89 Grateful Dead show - from the Great Western Forum on Sunday, December 10, 1989. In my opinion the meat of this set comes right out of the gate with a exquisite 'Jack Straw' followed by a wonderful, driven 'China Cat Sunflower'. The 'I Know You Rider' is no slouch either and the combo is, in my opinion the highlight of this set. The always-fun 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' leads into a rather lengthy Drums and Space. The 'Wheel' comes out of space, but it lacks the spark of some versions. 'I Need a Miracle' follows and despite some hiccups, Jerry brings out 'Stella Blue' and does a respectable version here. 'Good Lovin' closes the set with the crowd on their feet, and the boys leave us with an excellent 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' to close out the evening. Grateful Dead 1989-12-10 Great Western Forum - Inglewood, CA - Sunday Two Jack Straw [5:31] > China Cat Sunflower [6:52] > I Know You Rider [7:05] % Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [8:31] > Drums [12:20] > Space [7:21] > The Wheel [5:16] > I Need A Miracle [4:53] > Stella Blue [9:07] > Good Lovin' [7:00] Encore It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:09#] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod042420.mp3 Don't forget to follow us on facebook - there I post the info on events such as the Dead's 'Shakedown Street' series of live concerts on Nugs net on Friday night and this week, Dead & Co. from CitiField with Meyer on the Wolf... be safe and take care of yourselves and others.. thanks for being here
March will come in like a lion for us with the second set from the band's performance at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles CA from February 11th, 1989. We are treated right off to a superb China>Rider, with a very nice jam into Rider. I love hearing Brett here.. what better song to bring in March than 'I Know You Rider'? and Jerry sells that 'northbound train' line :) . 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' follows - that bouncy tune always got everyone dancing! 'Standing on the Moon' follows, certainly not in the slot we might expect it, but this is only its 3rd performance, but one of the best.. also probably the main reason I wanted to play this set.. a nice, stretched out 'Estimated Prophet' follows.. they then travel to Space, but Brent brings out 'I Will Take You Home' first, which always pulls at my heartstrings.. a very interesting drums follows, with Bill and Mickey being joined by Airto Moreira, Diana Moreira, and Flora Purim for some very spacey African sounding vocal stylings. The guests leave for Space, but Airto returns for 'Eyes of the World'. The post-drums is quite long by later-day standards, as Eyes finds a unique closing jam to lead into 'I Need A Miracle' then a soulful 'Black Peter' goes into a rousing 'Lovelight' to end the set. The crowd is treated to Phil bringing out the 'Box of Rain' for the encore to end a truly classic set. Grateful Dead Great Western Forum Inglewood, CA 2/11/89 - Saturday Two China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider>; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Standing On The Moon ; Estimated Prophet >; I Will Take You Home>; Drums* >; Space >; Eyes Of The World** >; I Need A Miracle >; Black Peter >; Turn On Your Love Light Encore Box Of Rain Comments * with Airto and Diana Moreira, Flora Purim; ** with Airto Moreira You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030218.mp3 'thoughts and prayers are not enough' Thanks for your support of the Deadpod my friends.
This week we feature the second set from the band's performance on April 10th, 1983 at Morgantown, West Virginia. This is a fine sounding, energetic set, in which I think Brent's contributions really shine. I love the intro out of space into 'the Wheel' and of course the 'China Doll' that comes out of the return into 'Playin'. The jamming in Playin' may not quite get out there as far as you'd like but overall this is a very fun well-played show. I hope you agree.. Friday the 13th finds us featuring the second set from the band's performance 30 years ago at Cal Expo on May 3rd, 1986. A nice bouncy Scarlet starts us off, with some pleasing trills from Brent (if you enjoy his additions).. the transition into Fire is one of the highlights of the set.. quite unusual.. Jerry gives a great reading of 'Fire on the Mountain', his voice in relatively good condition, just a bit strained.. They follow with 'Man Smart, Women Smarter'.. which always got the crowd up on their feet then an unusually placed 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' leads us into Drums.. Long and quite interesting I think you'll enjoy the energy here. they glide into 'The Other One' out of Space.. at times I wonder if they will find the 'one' but they do..and times I wonder where Garcia has gone.. . This leads into a slow and introspective 'Comes A Time'.. Jerry sounds quite nice here.. they follow with a set, and show closing, Sugar Magnolia.. it ends with some wierd Healy effects and an announcement about broken guitars and frozen fingers and no encore tonight.... given what happens to Jerry in a cou ple months (his diabetic coma) we have to wonder if this was a foreshadowing.. Nevertheless this is quite good for the time period and I sure hope you enjoy it! Happy Valentines' Day Weekend! This week's second set from Lake Placid New York, October 17th, 1983 should bring a warm smile to any lover's heart as it contains a really wonderful 'To Lay Me Down'.. one of the most romantic of all Garcia's songs. Of course I don't want to minimize the enjoyment the remainder of this set will bring you. They start off with 'Touch', then move into 'Samson and Delilah'.. then the aforesaid 'To Lay Me Down' starts a nice combination as it rolls into 'Man Smart (Woman Smarter)' and Terrapin Station pre-Drums. Following Space, we get a fine version of 'The Wheel', a rocking 'Miracle' then they 'Go Down the Road Feelin' Bad' into a set-closing 'Good Lovin' That one features some interesting improvisation by Bobby.. listen for it.. They return for an unusual 'Revolution' encore to finish their one and only trip to the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid.. Sometimes we all need to be flexible, right? Well this week I hope you'll forgive a change of plans. I'm going to push back the second set of 3/11/93 for a week to bring you a show that was played 26 years ago on November 5th, 1985 at The Centrum in Worcester, MA. I decided to bring you the *entire* show this week -in honor of the birthday of a friend of the Deadpod and because I hadn't done that in awhile.. We can't do this without your generous support!! ALSO - I have some copies of the fabulous new release - Three from the Vault to send to you as a thank you gift for anyone who contributes $50 or more.. But any amount is a huge help!!! Thanks for your consideration..
