Top Gun turns 40, and we can't talk about it without talking about the soundtrack that still punches through your speakers. From the first seconds of Kenny Loggins' “Danger Zone” on the aircraft carrier, we trace how 80s movie music uses needle drops to build character, tension, romance, and pure momentum. We get into the details that make the Top Gun soundtrack legendary: the way the Righteous Brothers' “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” revives an older classic for a new generation, how Berlin's “Take My Breath Away” becomes a musical signature for Maverick and Charlie, and why “Great Balls of Fire” remains one of the most unforgettable bar-scene singalongs in film. We also swap quick takes on the movie itself, the sequel callbacks, and why sometimes the music ages even better than the action. Then we jump into our Music in My Shoes picks and stories, including a huge milestone for the show: listeners in 100 countries. Along the way we hit The Kinks, The Doors, Peter Frampton's live-album magic, the Psychedelic Furs “Pretty in Pink” re-recording drama, Robert Palmer's “Addicted to Love” and the power of MTV-era visuals, plus a billion-views moment for the Outfield's “Your Love” and a spring break memory that drilled it into one of our brains forever. Wrap it up with No Doubt's “Just a Girl” and the eternal question of what you love hearing versus what you'd actually put on your own playlist. If you like music history, Billboard chart trivia, and the stories behind the songs, subscribe, share this with a friend who wore out their Top Gun cassette, and leave a review so more listeners can find us.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. Stijn Schmitz welcomes David Skarica to the show. David Skarica is Contrarian Investor and the Founder of Profit From Pessimism. In this wide-ranging discussion, Skarica offers insights into current market dynamics, focusing on gold, commodities, and investment strategies. Skarica views the current gold market as part of a long-term macro trend that began in 1999, with potentially another four to six years of growth ahead. He attributes this potential to global debt levels, which have reached unprecedented heights. Central bank buying and potential retail investor interest are additional factors supporting gold’s trajectory. While gold has already seen significant appreciation, Skarica believes we are only in the first or second stage of its bull market in terms of pricing. Regarding mining stocks, Skarica is particularly interested in smaller miners near production or with strong cash flow potential. He sees opportunities in junior mining companies that can potentially increase their market capitalization significantly. His investment approach focuses on finding undervalued companies with asymmetric risk-reward profiles, preferring to make concentrated bets on a handful of carefully selected investments. Stijn also explores energy markets, with Skarica noting potential opportunities in oil, natural gas, and even renewable energy sectors. He suggests that the ongoing geopolitical tensions and increased energy demands from technological developments like AI could support higher energy prices and create investment opportunities. Skarica’s investment philosophy emphasizes contrarian thinking, patience, and seeking value in overlooked or undervalued assets. He warns against over-concentration in any single investment and recommends diversification across sectors and careful position sizing. At the age of 16, he read the small booklet “The Plague of the Black Debt”, by James Dale Davidson, which was given to him by his uncle. David was always a sports stat nut, loving football, hockey and baseball stats, which lead to David becoming intrigued with economics and markets. David is such an avid Football and Las Vegas Raiders fan — his principal in grammar school was Bernie Custis, who was the late Raiders owner Al Davis’ roommate at Syracuse University, and the first ever African American quarterback in college and pro football history — that he also runs his own football vlog, Raiders Greats, which discusses great Raiders player of the past. He also is a soccer fan who supports Leeds Utd., as his father was born in Leeds, England. In 1996, at the age of 18, David became the youngest person on record (that he knows of anyhow) to obtain the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) license to trade investment securities. In the late 1990s, David felt that the market was becoming another epic bubble similar to the bubble of the 1920s, so he decided at the tender age of 20 to write his first book, Stock Market Panic!, which was published in 1998. Over the next decade, gold soared from $250 an ounce to nearly $1900, while the S&P 500 lost value. In the same year that this book was published, he decided to start his newsletter, Addicted to Profits. The newsletter's name was a spin on Robert Palmer's famed song Addicted to Love. The irony was Robert Palmer recorded this song in the Bahamas ay the famous Compass Point Recording Studio, and David himself would end up moving to the Bahamas in 2005 (another Irony about David moving to the Bahamas is that his mentor Sir John Templeton also resided there).

Back in 1980, Robert Palmer was already trying to figure things out with his jam, "I'm Just Looking for Clues." Fast forward to today, and here we are, diving into the murky waters of podcasting where someone is asking why their downloads are nosediving. This isn't just a casual inquiry; it's a cry for help amidst the chaos of the podcasting world! The Gut Punch of RealityI mean, who hasn't felt that gut punch when you realize your audience is slipping through your fingers like sand? So what do we do? We go on a hunt for those elusive clues, just like Palmer did, except our clues are more about audience retention than romance. As we dig deeper, we realize that now is NOT the time to pump up promotions. Yeah, you heard me right. If your downloads are dropping like it's hot, the last thing you wanna do is throw money at ads. It's like trying to sell a broken car; nobody's gonna bite. Why Is Your Leaving?Instead, let's focus on the core issue: why are people bailing? It's a classic case of ‘fix the holes in your ship before you set sail again.' Let's talk about asking your listeners directly: Are we still vibing? Did I lose you at minute 10? You'd be surprised what a simple survey can tell you about your audience's listening habits. Look at Your Podcast Completion PercentageAnd trust me, if your retention is below 70%, that's not just a warning sign; it's a full-blown emergency! We also touch on how the podcasting game is a lot like stand-up comedy. You don't just jump on stage and hope for the best; you gotta test those jokes first! Just like comedians tweak their routines based on audience reactions, we need to refine our content based on listener feedback. If you're not willing to do the groundwork, you're basically setting yourself up for a flop. Get The Content Working Before Your PromoteSo, buckle up, because before we throw our next promotion, we need to ensure that what we're offering is something that listeners actually wanna stick around for. Remember, the key to growth isn't just about shouting louder; it's about crafting something worth listening to.Takeaways:In podcasting, if your audience is dropping, it's not the time to promote. You should ask your listeners what they think about your show to get feedback.Tracking listener engagement is super important, and stats can help you understand why they leave.Promoting a podcast with declining numbers is like trying to sell a bad movie; it just doesn't work.Audience feedback is key; knowing where they tune out can help fix your show. You want your completion rate above 70%, but aiming for 80% is the golden ticket.Links referenced in this episode:podcastsconnect.apple.comcreators.spotify.comSchool of PodcastingThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

They reveal how they've approached playing each other's material on tour, their creative process while recording remotely, and the challenges of sequencing their nearly-completed album. The conversation takes entertaining detours into their Long Island roots, experiences playing Eddie Van Halen's music, memories of recently departed guitarists John Sykes and Ace Frehley, and amusing stories of bizarre industry suggestions they've received throughout their careers. Following that, Duran Duran's John Taylor opens up about forming The Power Station with Andy Taylor, Tony Thompson, and Robert Palmer. He shares fascinating stories about the band's formation, their creative process, and how they captured lightning in a bottle with their self-titled album. Taylor discusses Tony Thompson's incredible drumming, Andy Taylor's guitar prowess, and how the project allowed them to explore a harder rock sound. He also touches on his time with Neurotic Outsiders, Andy Taylor's current health battle, and Duran Duran's enduring legacy and upcoming projects. Percussionist Lenny Castro has made a career out of being an ingredient that makes everything he touches better. He's been one of the most in-demand musicians of the last 50 years and was even an official member of Toto for many decades. Would classics like "Africa" and "Rosanna" be what they are without him? Doubtful. He's also the best thing about Christopher Cross's "Ride Like the Wind" and ONJ's "Physical". We also discuss a bunch of his session work with people like Stevie Wonder, Robert Palmer, and Fleetwood Mac. He's "mostly" retired now but keeps getting pulled in because he's so good and even just completed a tour with John Mayer. He's the best and we're lucky to hear from him. In 1978, Paul and saxophonist Arno Hecht founded the well-known group called the Uptown Horns. As their visibility increased, the band was recruited for rock and roll gigs and played many of New York's most famous clubs. Paul and the Uptown Horns went on their first rock and roll tour with the J. Geils Band in 1981 and that led to many other opportunities including engagements with The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Joe Cocker, James Brown, Pat Benatar, and Ray Charles. The band lists recording credits on over 150 albums including James Brown's Grammy Award winning "Living in America" and tracks for Joe Cocker, Albert Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Palmer, Lou Reed and REM. In addition to continuing to play music, he began writing and found critical success with Hoboken to Hollywood, which earned him the 2011 Ovation Award for Musical Direction. Paul was also awarded Best Musical Direction by Stage Scene LA for Louis & Keely: Live' at the Sahara, which had a record run, playing to sold out audiences at the Geffen Playhouse. "Hollywood" Paul earned his nickname back in the 1980's due to his prodigious knowledge of film lore. Though his extensive contributions to the LA music scene have also helped add to that fabulous moniker. Paul's fame is within the world of Rock and Roll. On his latest album, "The Litteral Truth," he brings us a collection of songs that inspired his personal musical development. The Brecker Brothers, Edgar Winter and Steely Dan are a few of the artists we cover on the record, and revisiting these great cuts and reinterpreting them was a joyous excursion for all involved. Paul is a fun and talented man, and his records are spreading the joy of knowing him. -Bill Bodine   Episode Links: Outrageous 8 Records Find the albums here: The Litteral Truth Legacy Instagram (@paullitteralmusic) YouTube channel The Other Side of the Bell Episode #92 - Paul Litteral (first appearance)   Bob Reeves Brass Upcoming Events and Appearances: Trumpet Festival of the Southeast, Jan. 17, 2026, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Texas Music Educators Association Conference, Feb. 11-14 2026, San Antonio, Texas Dylan Music, Feb. 26-28, Woodbridge, New Jersey   Podcast Credits: "A Room with a View" - composed and performed by Howie Shear Podcast Host - John Snell Cover Photo Credit - Paul Litteral Audio Engineer - Ted Cragg

Warning: this episode contains strong language and a term of racist abuse.  Just when we thought the disasters of the government couldn't get any worse… New Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has made it her “moral mission” to raise Nish and Coco's blood pressure. Cruel new plans to end the permanent status of refugees and curb housing and support for asylum seekers do perhaps justify the government's slogan of the biggest overhaul of the system “in modern history” - but at what cost? But - not to be outdone in terms of parties completely out of touch with reality - Your Party's latest act of in-fighting leaves Nish and Coco with palms glued to their faces. Let's face it - things have never been anything but fractious within the upstart political movement, but as their conference approaches the wind has never seemed further from their sails.  And ahead of the budget next week Chancellor Rachel Reeves is entertaining big cuts to the Warm Homes Plan in efforts to bring down energy bills. We start with the Wishing Stones, the post-C86 combo for whom John played guitar in the late '80s, and progress swiftly to the subject of his caustic 2008 classic Kill Your Friends — the UK's drug-riddled music industry, in which he toiled through the '90s. After John talks about his uncanny 2005 novella Music from Big Pink – inspired by the Band album of the same name — we switch to the week's featured artist (and vocal inspiration to The Band's Richard Manuel) Bobby "Blue" Bland. We then pivot to the sublime writing of Deep Blues author and New York Times pop critic Robert Palmer, who would have turned 80 this summer. We mark the 50th anniversary of the deeply unloved Metal Machine Music by listening to — and discussing clips from — a 1996 audio interview with the inimitably supercilious Lou Reed. David Skarica discusses his book "Mega Returns: Profit from Maximum Pessimism," highlighting key themes such as the end of asset price inflation driven by excessive debt and government spending. The conversation begins with an exploration of how COVID-19 and the 2008 financial crisis fueled a period of unprecedented debt, leading to inflated asset prices across sectors. Skarica emphasized the dangers of governments overspending during COVID, particularly in the U.S., where interest payments now surpass defense budgets. A concerning sign of fiscal strain. He warned that rising debt levels globally, especially in Japan and emerging markets like Canada and Australia, could trigger a debt crisis, potentially leading to hyperinflation. Investment strategies were a focal point, with Skarica advocating for precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, and palladium as hedges against inflation. He also suggests specific ETFs for corporate bonds and options trading as actionable strategies. Additionally, he highlighs opportunities in emerging markets, particularly India's growth potential and Argentina as a turnaround play. Green energy and technology are discussed with cautious optimism. While skeptical of some trends, Skarica identifies opportunities in green energy companies and rare earth metals. He remains cautious about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, noting their volatility but acknowledging their role as a hedge against dollar devaluation. Finally, Skarica underscores the importance of monitoring bond markets for signs of economic stress, particularly rising yields, which could indicate broader financial instability. His insights provide a comprehensive view of current market dynamics and actionable strategies for investors navigating a complex financial landscape. At the age of 16, he read the small booklet “The Plague of the Black Debt”, by James Dale Davidson, which was given to him by his uncle. David was always a sports stat nut, loving football, hockey and baseball stats, which lead to David becoming intrigued with economics and markets. David is such an avid Football and Las Vegas Raiders fan — his principal in grammar school was Bernie Custis, who was the late Raiders owner Al Davis' roommate at Syracuse University, and the first ever African American quarterback in college and pro football history — that he also runs his own football vlog, Raiders Greats, which discusses great Raiders player of the past. The newsletter's name was a spin on Robert Palmer's famed song Addicted ...

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. ABOUT JIMMY JAM & TERRY LEWISWith 26 Billboard #1 R&B hits and 16 Billboard #1 pop hits to their credit, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are perhaps the most influential and successful songwriting and production duo in modern music history. With a total of 41 Top 10 hits in the US, Jimmy and Terry were named ASCAP Songwriters of the Year a record-breaking nine times. They are perhaps best known for their work with Janet Jackson, beginning with the Control album, which earned the duo a Grammy for Producer of the Year. Between 1986 and 1994 they scored thirteen #1 songs with Janet on either the R&B or pop chart, including “What Have You Done For Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You,” “Control,” “Let's Wait Awhile,” “Miss You Much,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Escapade” “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” “That's the Way Love Goes,” “Any Time, Any Place,” and “Again,” which earned Jimmy, Terry, and Janet an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Jimmy and Terry got their start as musicians with Morris Day and the Time, the Prince-produced band whose biggest hit was the Jam and Lewis-penned “Jerk Out.” They made the transition to a successful songwriting and production team working with the S.O.S. band, which landed a #2 R&B hit with “Just Be Good to Me.” From there, they made their mark on pop and R&B hits for decades to come. In addition to their work with Jackson, the duo wrote and produced the #1 pop singles “Human” by Human League, “Romantic” by Karyn White, “Thank God I Found You” by Mariah Carey, and the Boyz II Men singles “On Bended Knee” and “4 Seasons of Loneliness.” Additional R&B chart toppers include “Encore” by Cheryl Lynn, “Fake” by Alexander O'Neal, “Everything I Miss at Home” by Cherelle, “Sensitivity” by Ralph Tresvant, and the Johnny Gill singles “Rub You the Right Way” and “Wrap My Body Tight.” Other highlights from their catalog include New Edition's “If It Isn't Love” and “I'm Still in Love With You,” “No More Drama” by Mary J. Blige, Robert Palmer's hit pop cover of their Cherelle single “I Didn't Mean to Turn You On,” and recordings by Gladys Knight & The Pips, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Usher, Spice Girls, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Sting, Elton John, Beyonce, Rihanna, Rod Stewart, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, Willie Nelson, and many others.Always versatile, the duo has earned Grammy awards for Best R&B Album for Chaka Kahn's Funk This, Best Gospel Song for Yolanda Adams' “Be Blessed,” and Best Dance Recording for Janet Jackson's #1 pop and R&B hit “All For You.” Additional Jackson hits that were written and produced with Jam and Lewis include the Janet and Michael Jackson hit “Scream” and the #1 singles “Together Again,” “I Get Lonely,” “Doesn't Really Matter,” and the Nelly duet “Call On Me.”In total the team has earned over 100 gold, platinum, multi-platinum and diamond album certifications from the RIAA, have received more Producer of the Year Grammy nominations than anyone in history, earned the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
