With the summer months beginning to roll in, now is the time of year that sees cricket on the Isle of Man start to flourish. With the local league season now underway, there was also a chance for the potential next generation of players to get a flavour of the sport during the recent 2025 Manx Youth Games. And that raised an important question about an ongoing challenge - what can be done to boost youth participation in cricket here?Isle of Man Cricket Association's Cricket Development Officer Greig Wright explores this matter with Manx Radio's Darren Timson

Paul Craine has been researching our population for well over 40 years and he's concerned about the Manx birth rate falling to it's lowest since 1920. Births in the Isle of Man are now 43.9% lower than in 2010 with just 574 babies born last year. What's causing this trend and how concerned should we be about it? Paul Craine joins me on this evening's Agenda at 5.30pm on Manx Radio to consider these weighty issues. Demographer Paul Morland outlines the extent of the global decline in births and concludes that: “…governments can have no higher priority than addressing the demographic question”. He advocates “…the making of a pro-natal (pro-birth) culture” and suggests that this is “a role for all of us”. Reckon I'm getting too old for that sort of thing.

Retired law lecturer Peter Murcott is concerned about Michelle Haywood's private member's Bill which provides for Safe Access Zones and Protected Public Places. He believes that if enacted this law would lead to a significant erosion of free speech and could criminalise people merely for living in their own homes. If his interpretation of the Bill is correct than this should be a concern for us all, but is he right? He presents his case to Agenda this evening at 5.30pm on Manx Radio with me Phil Gawne. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to go about your business without being harangued by a vociferous campaigner? I guess the answer is yes but who decides what's reasonable and is this Bill pushing us down the slippery slope to an authoritarian regime?

When it re-opened after the time of Covid, and Island-wide church closures, the Promenade Methodist Church in Douglas formed a Working Party of church members, to forensically examine all aspects of church life - its purpose, its finances and most importantly its future - they asked some searching questions, and even considered whether the best stewardship would be to sell the site, re-invest the proceeds in other Methodist church ministries, and form a new worshipping community elsewhere. But after much research, talking and listening it was agreed that the church on the Prom should remain - a beacon of hope - its illuminated cross visible from the ferries coming into Douglas harbour - but its outreach should now be re-shaped to meet the needs of today's local community. And so The Prom Space was born - same church - but with a new purpose! And on today's programme, two members of that Working Party - Stephanie Gray and Amanda Walker - talk about the past, the present and the future - at The Prom Space! There's also a mention of Holocaust Memorial Day on 28th January, commemorated by a special programme here on Manx Radio as part of our Island Life series of programmes, presented by Siobhan Fletcher at 5:30pm on 28/1/25 and available afterwards as a podcast.
Doctors employed by Manx Care are planning to take industrial action primarily to achieve a 12.5% pay increase. A ballot last month showed 95% of the 121 doctors who voted supported the move as they feel that their concerns are not being taken seriously enough. They tell Perspective why they are threatening this unprecedented action and they don't hold back on their views about Manx Care's leadership. That's Perspective this Sunday at 12 noon on Manx Radio with me Phil Gawne. If an apple a day keeps the Doctor away I expect the Health Minister has been eating lots of apples this week.
