In honor of Women's History Month, this week we're focusing on the history of women's hair loss treatments and solutions, from ancient times to cutting-edge modern-day solutions. Women's HIstory of Hair Loss Treatments Hair has always been tied to identity, beauty, and confidence, which is why hair loss in women hasn't always been discussed openly. Ancient Egyptians used animal fats and oils in hopes of stimulating hair growth, while Roman women wore wigs often crafted from real human hair. Some of history's so-called remedies were far from glamorous—Cleopatra's hair loss treatment reportedly included bear grease and ground horse teeth. Even into the early 20th century, women had few options beyond hairpieces and home remedies. It wasn't until more recent decades that medical advancements paved the way for effective treatments tailored to women's hair loss. Causes of Women's Hair Loss Hair loss in women often differs from men's hair loss in a few key ways. Instead of receding hair lines around the forehead and temples or crown, women's hair loss typically manifests as diffuse thinning, widening part lines, and decreased volume. The causes can vary—hormonal changes due to pregnancy, menopause, or PCOS can trigger noticeable shedding. Nutritional deficiencies, such as low iron or vitamin D, can weaken hair, while stress and autoimmune disorders may contribute to excessive hair loss. Genetic factors also play a role, as female pattern hair loss tends to develop gradually over time. The good news is that understanding the cause is the first step toward finding the right hair loss solution. Science-Backed Hair Loss Solutions for Women Today's treatments offer real hope for women experiencing hair loss. Minoxidil remains the only FDA-approved topical treatment for female hair loss, helping extend the hair's growth phase for thicker, healthier strands. Oral medications like spironolactone can help balance hormones for those whose hair loss is driven by excess androgens. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is another promising option, using light to stimulate hair follicles and improve scalp circulation. PRP therapy, which involves injecting platelet-rich plasma into the scalp, has gained popularity for its potential to encourage regrowth. For those seeking instant confidence, hair systems and toppers provide a natural-looking, long-term solution. Innovations like Xtrands from HairClub seamlessly integrate additional strands into existing hair, offering an immediate volume boost. Finding the Right Solution for You If you're struggling with women's hair loss, you're not alone. Over 50% of women will experience some degree of hair thinning in their lifetime, but there are more options than ever before. Whether it's a medical treatment, a cosmetic solution, or a combination of both, the best approach depends on the cause of your hair loss and what fits your lifestyle. To hear firsthand stories from women who have found success, check out our past episodes featuring Meg Weatherman and Carol Combs (links below). No matter where you are on your hair journey, solutions exist—and there's hope. Resources Book a Free Consultation today! Thanks for listening to HairPod. We hope you enjoyed this episode. When we think of heroes, we might picture warriors or kings—but what about mothers? This episode dives into the lives of two extraordinary women who forever changed the course of Israel’s history: Deborah, a national leader, and Jael, a stay-at-home mom. Both women stepped boldly into their God-given roles and proved that no position is too small or too great for God to use. In this inspiring finale to our series on women in Scripture, Catherine is joined by Dr. Sandra Richter, renowned Bible scholar and creator of the video series The Epic of Eden: Deborah, Unlikely Heroes in the Book of Judges. Together, they shed light on the lives of these women and the profound lessons they offer for today’s believers. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: Deborah: A Mother in IsraelDiscover how Deborah shattered societal norms to lead her nation as a judge, prophet, and military strategist—all while embracing her identity as a "mother in Israel." Jael: The Unexpected HeroLearn how Jael, armed with nothing but household tools, courageously defeated Sisera, proving that faith and bravery can transform even the simplest actions into acts of divine deliverance. God’s Calling Transcends CultureExplore the patriarchal backdrop of ancient Israel and how God’s plans for Deborah and Jael defied the expectations of their time. A Message for TodayWhether leading in the public sphere or influencing from the heart of the home, Deborah and Jael show us that God uses mothers to accomplish His purposes. Their stories challenge and encourage us to step boldly into the roles God has called us to. Setting the Record StraightGain fresh insights into Barak’s character and how his partnership with Deborah highlights the value of faith-filled collaboration. Why This Matters:Deborah and Jael’s stories remind us that God doesn’t measure significance by status or title. From the highest leader in the land to a mother in her tent, God equips and calls women to vital roles in His Kingdom. Modern Application:Parents, take heart! These narratives inspire us to lead with courage in our homes and communities, trusting that God can use our actions—big or small—for His redemptive work. I am Kelley Mathews, your host today. And with me I have Becky Loyd. Becky is with Lifeway, but I feel like you've had a new title change here recently. Can you give me a sense of what you're doing now? Becky >> Yes, I have had a new title change, but I am acting as my previous title as the director of Lifeway Women. So I have actually been at Lifeway for 24 years, if you can believe it. I worked a lot my time in our kids ministry area until about 2010. And then I grew up and graduated to work with adult and women's ministries. And just in the past few months, I don't know if this is growing up or I don't know exactly what this is, but I am working on our really strategic planning for all of Lifeway. So working across all of our different ministry areas and making sure we're aligned going in the same direction to serve church leaders. It's interesting, I was called to ministry. My dad was a Minister of Music. So ministry is in my blood and when I was about to kind of enter the workforce, I had a moment where it was, should I go to seminary? And I applied and did all the things and then I ended up in business school. And so I've been doing. You hate to call it the business of ministry but that's really the gifting that God gave me. And so I have been working at Lifeway serving church leaders and churches for the last 24 years. And it's been the time of my life. I love it. Kelley >> Fantastic. And no one at a business like that would want to ignore such talent on the business end of things because it's certainly needed. So that's awesome. So we heard of you because of your time as director of the women's ministry there, and there is a survey that was put out. Before I go there, I understand you're an LSU tigers fan? Becky >> Well, yes, I did get my undergrad and graduate degree from LSU. Go Tigers. Kelley >> Well, go Tigers. Same here. So we have a lot in common already just like that. Becky >> Woo-hoo! Kelley >> I know. I love it. Couldn't resist. Sorry. But also, I have been in the Baptist world in ministry and women's ministry. And so I feel like this connection is pretty natural here. And I was very interested to see the report that came out just last year on the state of women or the state of ministry to women. So let's talk a little bit about that and what caused you and your team to put it out. Becky >> Yeah, it's really interesting. Lifeway is an entity that serves all parts of the local church - worship ministry, kids ministry. We serve many, many different parts. And as a person who my job is really to advocate for the work that we are doing for women at Lifeway, I found myself saying over and over again, women are underrepresented on the church staff. I think I said it so many times that the guys just kind of rolled their eyes. When I'm in a meeting and my guys don't forget,

Black women are just ELITE, but I'm sure you already know that. As the sista-streak continues we get to discuss some very interesting black women experiences. Sheryl Lee Ralph and Quinta Brunson made a historic moment, the awkward black girl phase is living and thriving babyy!! Black Ariel ain't never hurt nobody!! Touching on Hollywoods issue with representation, I strongly feel had Tyler Perry done this production thing would be.. DIFFERENT. No shade but we have to stop supporting companies that literally hate the black culture. A deeper topic really had me in my feels, and I need some honest feedback on it. This week on Inside Appalachia, we'll listen back to an encore episode, all about how women in the mountains spearheaded movements to battle racial injustice, defend healthy communities, and fight for the rights of all Appalachians. We'll talk with the author of a book called “To Live Here You Have To Fight,” hear from podcaster Anna Sale, and visit a camp that teaches young people to play rock music. Women aren't front and center when we usually hear about the region's history, but they've been influential in everything from the coal industry to labor movements to preserving traditions. Today, women are building on this history -- continuing to be role models for society, while taking our Appalachian roots into the modern day. In this episode, we'll learn about several of them, and what their stories reveal about modern movements for change across our region.

How Women Led Appalachian Movements for Social Justice Appalachian history is full of sharp, groundbreaking women who changed the lives of people around them. In the 1960s, a lot of mountain women got involved with the federal War on Poverty to help people access welfare benefits. That led them into partnerships with civil rights activists, disabled miners and others. They teamed up to fight for everything from poor people's rights to community health to unionization. History professor Jessica Wilkerson tracks that history in her book, “To Live Here, You Have to Fight: How Women Led Appalachian Movements for Social Justice.” Wilkerson spoke with Inside Appalachia co-host Mason Adams about what led those women into activism — and what their stories tell us about the world today. “They argued for valuing the common good, and at the end of the day, that's what these women that we're talking about were fighting for,” Wilkerson said. Her book also explores how modern-day movements in Appalachia build on these traditions that were led by women. “In many ways, we're fighting many of the same battles around environmental justice, around basic quality of life.” Empowering Young People Through Music Girls Rock Whitesburg in Whitesburg, Kentucky is a music camp for female, gender-fluid, non-binary and trans youth. Throughout the course of one week, campers learn an electric instrument, form a band and write songs -- which they perform in front of a live audience at the end of the week. While the camp focuses on electric music instruction, participants also learn how music is tied to social justice. Back in 2019, Folkways reporter Nicole Musgrave followed two girls who came to camp and who reinvented a traditional protest song. Women-Led Puppetry Group In Knoxville Throughout history, puppets and marionettes have been used as an accessible means to tell rowdy stories, poke fun at authority figures, and provide cheap entertainment. Puppetry blurs the line between play and politics, between protests, pageants and parades - all of which have a storied history in the South. We'll hear a story from one of our Folkways reporters Katie Myers, on how a group called Cattywampus Puppet Council in Knoxville, Tennessee, is building on that tradition. Let's Talk About Hard Things West Virginia native Anna Sale is host of the popular podcast “Death, Sex & Money.” It's a show that talks about, as she says, “the things we think about a lot and need to talk about more.” Sale's new book, Let's Talk About Hard Things is about having frank conversations about topics that can make us uncomfortable, including relationships and death. “If you are ill, what are the kinds of last conversations you want to have with the people you love? And not try to act like it's not happening,” Sale told Inside Appalachia co-host Caitlin Tan.

Many Christians interpret some commands, like 1 Corinthians 11:6 and 1 Timothy 2:9 as situation-specific, while interpreting others, like 1 Corinthians 14:34 and 1 Timothy 2:12 as timeless. There may be good reasons for understanding some of the commands in the epistles as timeless and others as situation-specific. However, this episode encourages Christians to take seriously the situational and occasional nature of the New Testament letters and strive for consistency in biblical interpretation. Furthermore, it encourages Christians to think and to study deeply the biblical documents.
Our custom may be to interpret scripture as timeless and universal. We may tend to read the New Testament letters, for example, as containing specific commands and prohibitions that have direct application for all people in all ages. But should we? Since the letters are occasional or situation-specific documents, written to address specific problems in certain first-century churches, should we treat the specific prohibitions and commands there as directly applying to us? In this episode, Kerry and Becky take a look at 1 Timothy 2:9 and why they believe the prohibition in that text does not apply to women of all time.
