Also known as the devil dog, the mud devil, and the Allegheny alligator, its names testify to the strangeness of what turns out to be an giant aquatic salamander that is at once both repulsive and magical, depending on who you're discussing them with.   The slimy brown monsters are the largest salamanders in North America and thrive in only the most healthy streams. They are thus indicators of poor water quality, a concern in parts of West Virginia where the hellbender lives.   Due to the impact of disease and habitat loss, the animals are listed as a vulnerable species though groups like the New River Conservancy are working to reverse the condition. In 2023, she and her husband, Wayne Bressler, opened Boxer Craft House on South Mildred Street in Ranson. The family-owned store, recently voted No. 1 quilt shop in West Virginia, became a reality with help from the West Virginia Small Business Development Center. In Monongalia County, Mylan Park draws anywhere between 800,000 and 900,000 people a year to sporting events. Ron Justice, president of the Mylan Park Foundation, also emphasized the local economic benefits, citing job creation and increased spending in restaurants and hotels. On a similar path, Summersville is planning a large outdoor sports complex. And Charleston is preparing for a new indoor sports complex, which will transform part of the Charleston Town Center Mall.  “Sports tourism nationally is recession-proof. Families will always travel for their kids to play travel sports,” said Tim Brady, president and CEO of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Many environmental organisations have welcomed this possibility and highlighted its importance.  Rawan spoke with Bianca Ranson from forest and bird about what this new bill would mean, why it is important and how it incorporates local iwi and hapu values.

At the center of this stands Maceo Pinkard, a native whose impact on music reverberates through the decades. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1897, Maceo Pinkard was a pioneering songwriter whose journey began at the Bluefield Colored Institute. A prolific songwriter, he went on to form a music publishing firm in New York City. Pinkard's impact on music was profound and far-reaching. He composed iconic tunes such as “Them There Eyes,” which was famously popularized by the legendary Billie Holiday.  However, it was perhaps his collaboration with bandleader Ben Bernie and lyricist Ken Casey that cemented his place in history. Together, they created the timeless classic “Sweet Georgia Brown,” a song that would become synonymous with the Harlem Globetrotters and be recorded by an impressive list of artists spanning generations. About Craig Ranson Craig Ranson is the Senior Vice President of Installed Base America for Framatome Inc. In this role, Ranson is responsible for the Installed Base Business Unit's continued development and overall delivery of innovative products and services, component upgrades, and engineering solutions to sustain and enhance the nuclear energy facilities in North America. Ranson began his career with the company in 1991 as an intern, which led him to the Reactor and Services organization in 1992, supporting the development of advanced robotics and remote tooling. After leaving the company in 1997, Ranson returned in 2001 to what became AREVA Nuclear Services, performing operations and engineering work in the Outage and NDE Services group. In 2010, Ranson was promoted to Vice President of NDE Solutions and later as Vice President of Component Repair and Replacement Services. In 2014, Ranson was appointed Chief Operations Officer for AREVA Inc. and served as interim Chief Commercial Officer where he was responsible for the entire operations and customer relations for North America. In August, 2016, Ranson was appointed Senior Vice President of Installed Base Services Business Unit, responsible for all operating and engineering services for existing operating plants. Effective January, 2017, Craig Ranson became the Senior Vice President of Installed Base America. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Ranson holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
