Layoffs at the agency, which releases weather forecasts and monitors extreme weather, could have serious implications. Also, funds for climate and sustainability-focused farming projects have been indefinitely frozen, even though the USDA has already signed contracts.10% Of NOAA Staff Laid Off, With More Cuts PossibleThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, better known as NOAA, impacts and provides services for Americans every day. The agency releases daily weather forecasts and monitors extreme weather, and it also conducts research into global weather and climate change.Along with many other federal science agencies, NOAA is being subjected to layoffs in the name of cost-cutting: 10% of the agency's workforce has been laid off, with 1,000 more cuts potentially to come. According to Dr. Timothy Gallaudet, acting NOAA administrator during Trump's first term, this is likely to lead to declines in quality of service and access to information about weather events.Host Flora Lichtman speaks to Umair Irfan, science correspondent at Vox, who has been covering the turmoil at NOAA. They also discuss other science stories of the week, including the death of prolific blood donor James Harrison.Frozen Climate And Conservation Funds Leave Farmers In LimboAround the country, farmers are planning and planting this year's crops. It can be uncertain work, made even more tenuous by some of the Trump administration's changes to climate and conservation policies. The administration has frozen billions of dollars in grants to farmers for sustainable agriculture, conservation, and “climate smart” projects. In some cases, farmers had already signed contracts with the government and begun work on these projects. While some funding from the Inflation Reduction Act was recently released, many farmers across the country are still in limbo.Host Flora Lichtman talks with Patrick Brown, a farmer in Warren County, North Carolina; and Dr. Kitty O'Neil, an agricultural climate resiliency specialist at Cornell University's Cooperative Extension about the future of farming in a changing climate.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. El australiano James Harrison murió semanas atrás a sus 88 años después de casi 1.200 donaciones de plasma.
Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 3-06-2025: Dr. Dawn addresses an email about coronary artery blockage, explaining that a 70% calcified plaque in the LAD vessel might be better managed with medication than stenting, and recommending statin therapy to prevent further plaque formation. A live caller with a history of staph aureus infection describes unusual fingernail changes and fungal infection following prolonged antibiotic treatment, with Dr. Dawn suggesting an in-person examination for proper diagnosis. The show highlights the remarkable story of James Harrison, an Australian blood donor whose special anti-D antibodies saved 2.4 million babies from hemolytic disease, donating blood 1,173 times over his lifetime. Dr. Dawn provides practical advice for reducing microplastic consumption, recommending glass containers over plastic, avoiding bottled water, and warning about unexpected sources like Himalayan salt, scented wax melts, and plastic tea bags. She evaluates cold water plunge therapy for weight loss, citing research showing only temporary benefits for inflammation reduction and stress relief, but potential dangers for people with heart conditions. The show addresses concerning developments with bird flu (H5N1), highlighting the discovery of the virus in rats and questioning why rapid testing kits aren't being developed and distributed proactively. Dr. Dawn criticizes FDA food safety regulation, particularly the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) pathway that allows manufacturers to self-determine ingredient safety without proper vetting. She discusses fascinating research on the NOVA1 gene, which changed dramatically 250,000-500,000 years ago and appears linked to complex vocalizations and potentially human language development. The show recommends "solo freedom dancing" as an effective exercise option, while warning that noise-canceling headphones may impair the brain's ability to process complex sounds, leading to auditory processing disorders. Dr. Dawn explores a breakthrough in synthetic microbiome therapy that shows promise in combating C. difficile infections by identifying specific bacterial strains that suppress the harmful bacteria. She shares news about a promising oral norovirus vaccine tablet that's shown effectiveness in clinical trials for both younger and older adults, potentially addressing a disease that causes 70,000 hospitalizations annually. The show concludes with clarification about vitamin A and measles, noting that while it can help prevent complications in malnourished children, it doesn't prevent infection and can be dangerous at high doses, especially for pregnant women.

It's Thursday, March 6th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaragua violated religious freedom 222 times last year Christian Solidarity Worldwide released a report Monday on the continued deterioration of religious freedom in Nicaragua. The report documented 222 cases of religious freedom violations in the Central American country last year. Authorities have prohibited churches from holding public religious processions. Pastors must report to designated police officers and submit their weekly plans. Christian Solidarity Worldwide noted, “Preaching about unity or justice or praying for imprisoned religious leaders or even the general situation in the country, for example, can be considered as criticism of the government and treated as a crime.” Nicaragua is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. South Korea's birthrate up South Korea's birthrate rose last year for the first time in nearly a decade. The country witnessed 238,300 births in 2024, up 3.6% from 2023. South Korea's fertility rate was 0.75 children per woman last year, up from 0.72 in 2023. It was 1.24 in 2015. South Korea is known for having one of the worst fertility rates in the world. The government has introduced pro-marriage policies in response. UK Christian groups organize Nat'l Day of Prayer Against Assisted Suicide Religious organizations in the United Kingdom are organizing a National Day of Prayer Against Assisted Suicide on March 25. The Christian Institute is leading the initiative in partnership with Affinity, CARE, the Christian Medical Fellowship, and the Evangelical Alliance. The U.K. parliament is currently considering a bill to legalize the killing of terminally ill adults who want to end their lives. Ciarán Kelly, the Director of The Christian Institute, said, “Now is a key moment to pray for the failure of efforts to legalize assisted suicide for ill and vulnerable people.” 40 Days for Life kicks off in 660 cities worldwide Pro-lifers around the world joined in the 40 Days for Life prayer campaign starting yesterday. People are praying for an end to the murder of unborn babies in 660 cities. The abortion mill in one of those cities is already expected to shut down. The Bloomington Police Department informed 40 Days for Life that the Planned Parenthood locations in Bloomington and Decatur, Illinois are closing for good. Colossians 4:2 says, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” Trump opposes transgenderism in speech On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump delivered an address to both chambers of Congress. His speech lasted over an hour and 40 minutes, a record for presidential addresses to Congress. Trump celebrated his first 43 days back in office. He criticized transgenderism and illegal immigration while promoting government cuts and tariffs. Trump called on Congress to ban so-called sex-change surgeries on children. TRUMP: “Shortly after taking office, I signed an executive order banning public schools from indoctrinating our children with transgender ideology. (applause) I also signed an order to cut off all taxpayer funding to any institution that engages in the sexual mutilation of our youth. (applause) “And now I want Congress to pass a bill permanently banning and criminalizing sex changes on children and forever ending the lie that any child is trapped in the wrong body. (applause) This is a big lie. And our message to every child in America is that you are perfect, exactly the way God made you.” (applause) According to a CBS News survey, a massive 76% of those watching said they approved of Trump's first second-term speech to Congress, reports One America News. Supreme Court votes against Trump's freeze of $2B to USAID The U.S. Supreme Court sided with a lower court against the Trump administration yesterday in a case involving USAID payments. The lower court ordered the administration to unfreeze $2 billion in foreign payments. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4. Justice Samuel Alito led the dissent, writing, “Does a single district-court judge who likely lacks jurisdiction have the unchecked power to compel the Government of the United States to pay out (and probably lose forever) 2 billion taxpayer dollars? The answer to that question should be an emphatic ‘No,' but a majority of this Court apparently thinks otherwise. I am stunned.” Australian man with the golden arm dies at 88 And finally, a beloved Australian blood donor died recently at the age of 88. James Harrison was known as the “Man with the Golden Arm.” His blood contained the rare antibody called anti-D. The antibody is used in a medication for pregnant women whose blood might attack the unborn baby. Harrison donated blood and plasma 1,173 times between 1954 and 2018. He's credited with saving the lives of 2.4 million babies! Stephen Cornelissen with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service said, “James was a remarkable, stoically kind and generous person who was committed to a lifetime of giving and he captured the hearts of many people around the world.” In Acts 20:35, the Apostle Paul said, “And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.' ” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, March 6th, in the year of our Lord 2025. If you had the chance to save millions of lives, you'd do it, right? That's exactly what James Harrison did.Known as The Man with the Golden Arm, James had a rare antibody in his blood that helped protect unborn babies from a deadly blood disorder. After receiving life-saving transfusions as a teenager, he spent 63 years donating plasma every two weeks - saving over 2 million lives, including his own grandchildren.James passed away this month at 88, but his legacy lives on. Scientists have used his blood to recreate the antibody, ensuring that millions more babies can be saved!
James Harrison gave blood and plasma more than a thousand times for six decades. Harrison's plasma contained a rare antibody, anti-D, given to pregnant women whose babies are at risk of developing a blood disease. - ハリソンさんは18歳から81歳まで、60年以上にわたり、定期的に献血を行いました。彼の血漿に含まれた希少で貴重な抗体「アンチ-D」は、200万人以上の赤ちゃんの命を救いました。

Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show joined the show. The guys joked about the near media fight that took place in Indy ahead of the scouting combine. Mark told the story about being confused for another big guy named Mark in town and how he almost got beat up by James Harrison. The Steelers have reportedly checked in on Deebo Samuel. Mark thinks the Steelers should call the 49ers about their WR availability. Mark thinks Omar Khan learned his lesson from last year and won't wait around on deals to happen. Mark believes George Pickens will be back next season, but admitted that things could go south at any given time. Mark talked about the challenges of handling Pickens in a lame-duck season. The guys discussed some of the Pickens antics from last season, including the odd story from Christmas Day. Are the Steelers going to bring back Najee Harris? Kaboom doesn't think it makes a lot of sense. Is Nick Chubb in the conversation? More w/ Kaboly – Mark still likes the idea of Justin Fields back, but he thinks Fields will choose to go elsewhere. If that happens, the Steelers will likely contact Russell Wilson about a deal. The Aaron Rodgers conversation began and Mark is in favor of the idea if things fall through. Mark is surprised Poni is so upset over the Matt Stafford news. More w/ Kaboly – The guys questioned Mark on the Steelers' facilities, which yet again graded among the lowest in the league. A sauna is a new thing for the Steelers in 2025. The Pitt side of the building is very nice, but the Steelers don't have the same amenities. Mark doesn't think the space is doable, but said the Steelers can get out of the lease in a few years. How important are the formal meetings at the combine? Mark isn't sure if Javon Hargrave has a lot left in him in what could be a reunion the Steelers seek in free agency. Mark would bet against the Steelers taking a corner in the 1st round. What if a player in the draft falls to 21 and he's not necessarily a need? The guys asked Mark about the show Pat McAfee and the boys will be bringing to town. Mark's son clogged another toilet yesterday.
On this all new episode of Not Just Football with Cam Heyward we dive into the combine news and what it actually might mean if Matt Stafford were to be available this off season. Then we are joined by Steelers legends Jerome Bettis, James Harrison and Charlie Batch. Finally we close out the episode with NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino. Learn more about your ad choices. “I never really wanted kids because I never wanted to care more about somebody than I did myself. And when I had them, I became vulnerable. I was no longer invincible. I think that was something I needed.” James Harrison 2x Super Bowl Champ and 5x Pro Bowler on his biggest Pivot After the sports world just witnessed one of the best defensive performances by a team in a Super Bowl with Philadelphia's win, we can't help but remember the infamous 100 yard interception return by James Harrison in Super Bowl XLIII and how maybe the All Pro Line Backer was onto something when he said, "Offense win games, Defense win championships." The Super Bowl hero and former Pittsburgh Steelers All Pro sits with his old teammate Ryan Clark, along with Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor, for a wide open and wide ranging conversation about his NFL journey, his unmatched intensity on and off the field and how fatherhood saved his life. Starting out the gate, the question is asked: Is James Harrison actually scary, or just misunderstood? Channing has funny banter as the guys debate James' intense, no-nonsense demeanor and how he maintained this alter ego. Harrison shares how he was raised to believe that kindness could be mistaken for weakness and lived by that mantra with his on-field play reflecting it. Harrison opens up about his struggles early on in his career from playing at Kent State to NFL Europe to getting cut multiple times, and almost walking away from football. But his relentless work ethic instilled from his parents and a 'chip on the shoulder' mentality fueled his efforts. He shares how Steelers Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau played a crucial role in shaping his career, admitting that without him, “There is no James Harrison.” Harrison doesn't hold back when discussing some of his hardest hits and biggest fines, including a notable play involving Josh Cribbs that cost him $75,000, which he feels he shouldn't have paid, but perhaps someone in the room who was truly responsible for it, should have paid, as he gives a look to Ryan. The guys get into a deeper conversation about how the locker room and playing mentality was different during their days vs today's era. He reveals in a shocking story, what ultimately led him to leave Pittsburgh to play with AFC rivals Patriots and then Bengals. Always living on the edge with a reckless abandon approach to all aspects of his life, Harrison opens up on how becoming a father didn't just soften him, but changed his entire outlook financially, mentally and even safety wise. In a heartfelt moment, James shares the 180 his life took after becoming a dad and how 100% honesty is what guides his parenting skills, even when some things are better off not said! From parenting advice to chatting about James' potential MMA/boxing match with Chad OchoCinco Johnson, the guys' conversation goes from laugh out loud moments to tears filling up discussing the evolution of life as the men have grown older. This episode has it all whether a football fan or curious about life, family, growth as we peel back the layers of James Harrison- the fierce competitor, the devoted father, and the man who never backs down from a challenge. On the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the team's offensive line heading into the NFL offseason. How much pressure is on Broderick Jones to perform to his potential in 2025? What skills must he master to get there? And is he a viable long-term piece of the offensive line of the future? Can Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu already be considered cornerstones for the next decade, despite being drafted just last year? What is Frazier's upside? Can he be a Pro Bowl or All-Pro caliber player after a promising rookie campaign? And where does Mason McCormick fit into the long-term picture amid likely flux at guard with Isaac Seumalo and James Daniels playing on expiring contracts? Our duo weighs options for GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin. Later, the guys react to the NFL awards announced Thursday. Did T.J. Watt deserve DPOY over Patrick Surtain II? Were Hines Ward and James Harrison worthy of more Pro Football Hal of Fame consideration following the announcement of a class that included Sterling Sharpe, Eric Allen and more? And what should be make of the Bills' Josh Allen winning MVP over the Ravens' Lamar Jackson and the Eagles Saquon Barkley? Then in the third segment, Adam and Ray preview the Super Bowl from a Steelers perspective. Should fans be rooting for the Eagles to stop Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs from claiming a history-making third consecutive championship? And which team will win the game?
Post-Gazette spots columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. How will the Steelers' 1970s dynasty -- featuring legendary names like Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris -- compare to what Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs have done this decade if the Chiefs are able to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl? And how can we expect the game to play out? Will Mahomes' greatness win out again? Or could Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles find the magic to take him down? Later, Paul tackles some other hot Steelers topics. How excited should fans be for the 2025 game in Dublin, Ireland? Was T.J. Watt snubbed in DPOY voting, with the Broncos' Patrick Surtain II taking the honors? And how do the Pro Football Hall of Fame resumes of Hines Ward and James Harrison compare to those of 2025 inductees like Sterling Sharpe and Jared Allen?

On the weekly Chipped Ham & Football podcast, host Adam Bittner welcomes Ed Bouchette, former Steelers insider for the Post-Gazette and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, to react to the team's 2024 season and where it goes from here. Is Mike Tomlin closer to a messy exit like Chuck Noll? Or a Super Bowl-winning revival like Bill Cowher? How would Dan Rooney have handled the team's current playoff wins drought differently than son Art Rooney II as owner, if at all? And is Tomlin's long tenure more about loyalty? Or belief in doing business the way ownership would like to? Ed tackles those questions, then weighs in on roster issues. Why does he prefer Justin Fields over Russell Wilson or outside options at quarterback? What are his feelings about WR George Pickens and whether GM Omar Khan should explore trading him this offseason? Is it time to break up the defensive core of Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick? And why does Ed like Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton as young players who can grow into bigger roles? Then our duo wraps the show with some Hall of Fame talk with a focus on Hines Ward and James Harrison.

Director Steve McQueen's new film, Blitz, is full of stunning visuals. The audio team was tasked with coming up with sounds that could match, and often exceed, the beauty of the images they are accompanying. The war surrounding our main characters is often happening off screen, as the bombs are raining down as a catalyst for the human drama happening in underground shelters and tube stations. The team had to dream up the sound design of steam trains, massive fires and explosions galore. All of this while creating a realistic sound scape for 1940s London. James Harrison and Paul Cotterell both served as Blitz's re-recording mixers and supervising sound editors and they are joined in this talk by production sound mixer Jahn Casali. Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news. Do former Steelers Hines Ward and James Harrison belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Why do voters not see enough in their decorated resumes? And how should their resumes stack up against 2025 class finalists including Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith and Terrell Suggs? Later, Paul gives his thoughts on the crucial NFL Week 18 matchup with the Bengals on Sunday. Then offers some thoughts on the College Football Playoff quarterfinal results. Are James Franklin, Drew Allar and Penn State serious threats to win the title after their Fiesta Bowl win against Boise State? Can anyone beat Ohio State after the Buckeyes' dominant win over No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl? And should the SEC take a perception win after costly bowl losses?
Pittsburgh Steelers fans have been showing their true colors this past week, and it's not Black and Gold, it's cowardly yellow. We'll put the Mike Tomlin haters to bed once again. What will take for the Steelers to have a 'successful' season? It depends on who you follow on social media. George Pickens is once again under the microscope. Some think a recent gesture shows he already wants out of Pittsburgh. Others say it's time to trade him. A losing streak is always a good time for the revisionist historians to emerge. This time the conversations centers around Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. Finally, why Hines Ward and James Harrison may never make the Hall of Fame. What Yinz Talkin' Bout is the conversation about the Pittsburgh Steelers social media conversation, exposing all the week's hot and toxic takes. Hosted by Kyle Chrise and Greg Benevent.
