We hear about the old days in Onchan village in the days of our poet, William Gell's, father, and the fiery but beloved vicar, Rev John Howard. In Manx we hear more from the Brothers Grimm. We also hear music and song from the Celtic countries throughout the programme.
There is a version in the Manx language of one of Grimm's fairy tales, and William Gell's 1906 poem, Mannin Veg Veen, takes us to his birthplace, Onchan. All with a selection of music from the Celtic countries.

In 1906 William Gell of Onchan had his third book published containing his lengthy poem, Mannin Veg Veen, which made a poetical tour of the Island. In honour of the Three Legs, William Gell decided to write his poem in rhyming triplets. However, before embarking on the tour, we look at a full-page photograph, the title page and William Gell's dedication and Preface. We come to the final episode in our Manx translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris valiantly pushing forward through the Szganee to reach the leiter-wagon on which is the box containing Count Dracula. Rev'd Canon Brendan Alger will be remembered by many for his long and active ministry on the Island as Parish Priest of St Mary of the Isle, Douglas, and Dean (or leader) of the Roman Catholic Churches on the Isle of Man from his arrival in 1989 to his retirement in early 2011. We mark his recent death - peacefully at his home in Onchan - with extracts from a service which he led, including his sermon, and music from St Mary's Church Choir. Throughout his life, Canon Brendan was a keen historian - and this is reflected in a celebration of the early Christian Saint Aidan in compelling stories from David Adam and music from folk singer Andrew Lobb Plus our usual notice board - and another invitation for you to choose your favourite hymns for inclusion in future editions of the programme. In conversation with them both on today's programme I discover what they hold in common, and where their respective ministries have led them ....and it seems to be a shared passion for the Holy Land! Many churches see science as the enemy - a challenge to belief in God. But what if science and religion were not opposites at all? Instead - what if they needed each other? The man who asked THOSE questions is Revd Professor David Wilkinson - Theologian, Physicist and current Principal of St John's College, Durham, and he's coming to the Island next weekend. In this programme, Rev'd Steve Ingrouille, Methodist Minister based in Onchan, who studied under Professor Wilkinson and invited him to the Island, shares some of his own thoughts and experiences regarding science and religion - and we hear from Revd Professor Wilkinson himself. Details of his programme on the Isle of Man are as follows :- Friday 27 January - Evening at IOM Observatory with Revd Professor David Wilkinson "The Big Bang, Hawking and the Multiverse" Call/Text Gary on 07624 496672 or email stars@manx.net to reserve your place Saturday 28 January - Island Spirituality Network St John's Mill - from 10am to 1pm No need to book - just come along Revd Professor Wilkinson is guest speaker, and has chosen the title for this morning "Wonder, Wisdom and Worship - God's gift of science" Saturday 28 January - Onchan Methodist Church - 6.30pm David will share his testimony, speaking about how he holds science and faith together with integrity in his life. We learn a little more about Captain John Taubman of The Nunnery, before David Robertson points out other fine houses for hospitality in the neighbourhood of Douglas - Captain Southcote's Ballaughton, Lord Henry Murray's Atholl-lodge on Port-e-Chee and The Hague in Onchan, formerly the home of the late Richard Betham. We return to Captain Taubman for his work in agriculture. Professor Van Helsing has arranged for some flowers to be sent for Lucy Westenra from his friend's glasshouse in Haarlem. Lucy is rather nonplussed to find that they're garlic, but the Professor assures her it's no joke and that he and Dr John Seward will decorate her room with them and make a wreath to wear round her neck. Blein vie noa! Happy New Year! Welcome to a specially extended New Years Day edition of At Your Service - looking back at some of the guests, stories and music that featured on the programme during 2022. Philip Longworth has never let his sight problems be an obstacle to serving others - and now he's living and working on the Island - with a mission that's church-based but aiming to benefit everyone! We hear a moving story from Holocaust Memorial Day 2022, and love was very definitely in the air in the programme closest to Valentines Day! Listen again to a beautiful story of love, patience, prayer and trust in God - it's the story of a Nepalese baby girl, and a little boy called Finn. At Easter time, composer John Rutter was so moved by the situation in Ukraine that he responded with some deeply moving music - here's a chance to listen again, and to pray for peace with Louise Whitelegg, our local Christian Aid representative. The important subject of mental health was mentioned by different guests a number of times during the year, but it was the painfully honest account of his own mental health problems which touched people most deeply ..... listen again as Onchan-based Methodist Minister Rev'd Steve Ingrouille tells his true story. The Feast of Celtic Saint Columba is remembered in music by Marlene Hendy and Dilys Sowrey, and we re-visit the time when the late Bill Turnbull and the BBC TV Songs of Praise team recorded a programme the Island during our Island of Culture Year - 2014. This extract features Bill in conversation with John Kennaugh, talking about his love of our national poet T.E. Brown - and his love of the Manx countryside. We end with an invitation from Manx Language Development Officer Ruth Keggin-Gell - and with a very short reflection to send us out into another year. It was very difficult to know what to include in this review programme - so I chose the features which had attracted the most comments - but every guest and every topic was special in its own way, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to the programme. And thank YOU for downloading/listening ! Our usual notice board will resume next Sunday - so do please email me with information for it: judithley@manxradio.com

On 22nd October, Mrs Olive Dobson died peacefully, after a short stay in hospital. Olive was 92 and is probably one of the longest-serving church organists the Island has ever known. Olive was the organist at Abbeylands Chapel for 81 unbroken years, and for 47 of those years she was also organist at the Methodist Church on the Main Road in Onchan. This programme is a celebration of Olive's dedicated service, using an interview she gave in 2016, to mark her 75th anniversary as organist at Abbeylands - It's a fascinating insight into her life, her music and the changing face of church over those long years. The programme also features some of Olive's favourite hymns. On today's programme, we explore the role of the Permanent Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, in conversation with Graeme Easton, a parishioner of St Columba's church in Port Erin. On Saturday 23 July in St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Hill Street, Douglas, Graeme will be ordained as a Permanent Deacon, by Bishop Tom Williams, an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Liverpool, of which the Catholic Churches on the Island form a part. Graeme talks about the selection process, his training, and his future role in Church life on the Island. Along the way, he dispels some of the misunderstandings about what a deacon is - and what he is not! There's a warm welcome for all to come to share in Graeme's ordination Mass on Saturday 23rd at 5pm - it's in St Mary's Catholic Church on Hill Street, Douglas and music will be provided by Rushen Silver Band. When a Methodist Minister retires, tradition says that they are 'sitting down'. So, having completed 9 years as Chair of the Isle of Man District of the Methodist Church, Reverend Richard Hall is 'sitting down' and he and is wife Ruth will shortly be leaving the Island. On today's programme, Richard reflects on his life as an ordained minister, hints at some of the challenges facing the Methodist Church, and chooses some music which is particularly meaningful to him. Mrs Olive Dobson first played the harmonium in Abbeylands Chapel on the first Sunday in July, 1941, for the Sunday School Anniversary Service - when she was just 11. 80 years later she is still playing in Abbeylands and shows no sign of stopping any time soon! She was also the organist in Onchan Methodist Church - the plan was for her to play whilst they looked for another organist, following the departure of Gordon Astill to the Parish Church ..... The temporary arrangement lasted for 50 years, during which Olive played in the morning in Onchan and afternoon and evening in Abbeylands! Olive tells her story of remarkable, quiet, steady dedication, on today's programme There's also lots of notice board information. This month's programme falls during our Island circuit-breaker lockdown, so astronomer Howard Parkin cannot be in the Manx Radio studio as usual. Instead, he's in his garden in Onchan, gazing at the skies. Sadly there's too much cloud cover, making 'live' stargazing too difficult - but Howard has plenty of information about what we can see during the month of February, weather permitting of course! Howard also has updates on some major space stories, and there's breaking news about asteroids heading for the earth's orbit in early February - but don't worry - we won't be able to see them and they won't do us any harm! Howard has a fact sheet available now - it's a month-by-month guide to stargazing over the Island. If you'd like a copy, email Howard on howardparkin@manx.net

Once again, our resident Astronomer Howard Parkin starts this month's programme with some stargazing 'live' from his garden in Onchan. Howard explains what (given the right weather conditions!) we can look out for in our wonderful dark skies during the month of June. This month's music track is Cilla Black with Across The Universe - a very appropriate choice, as, in the second part of the programme, Howard will be reflecting on the successful launch of the SpaceX Dragon, on its journey taking two American astronauts to the International Space Station - he'll be explaining just why this is so important, and what other space exploration projects are being developed now.
After an extended break because of the 'c word', the #ManxFootyPod returns with an update on #FCIsleofMan and how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected its plans to join the English #nonleague system. Guest Paul Jones also reveals that memberships open for the club, and umbrella organisation Sporting Club Isle of Man, on Monday and the benefits that come with them. *There's no Disco Dave in the special lockdown episode, but don't worry he's safe and well in his Onchan holiday home.
In order to maintain social distancing, Howard can't be in the Manx Radio studios for this month's edition of the Manx Sky at Night, so instead he's recorded a programme at his home in Onchan! First he takes us into the garden to do some actual stargazing - listen to this podcast outdoors at about 10pm on a clear night, using your smartphone or tablet, and Howard will guide you round the night skies during May - then we're back indoors for the second part of the podcast, as Howard brings us up to date with the latest space exploration news. There's also information about the new series of half hour sessions, called The Universe from the Isle of Man, which Howard is offering as part of the #LockdownLearning programme being offered by the University College Isle of Man - free sessions on a variety of subjects, available via Zoom - something to interest everyone during this time when we're staying at home. Two were returning members, voted back in to serve another five-year term, and two were new faces. Kerry Sharpe, Bill Henderson, Peter Greenhill and Rob Mercer were the successful nominees, now set to serve until February 2025. In this episode, we learn a little more about the people that got in - and a bit about some of those that didn't. On Monday evening, there was a rare opportunity for the general public to put their questions to the LegCo candidates. Liberal Vannin hosted a Q&A session at the Manx Blind Welfare headquarters in Onchan, which was almost full to capacity. The two-hour discussion, from around 7:30 to 9:30 on Monday evening, was hosted by Liberal Vannin's chair, Michael Josem. During the programme, we hear extracts from that discussion, including some of the candidates' thoughts on some key issues, and we listen in to the moment the nominees found out their fate.
Douglas and District manager Arron Delaney and club captain Stephen Mulhern join us this week to look ahead to Saturday's #WoodsCup quarter-final with Onchan. The pair also reflect on D and D's season as a whole and Delaney's promotion into the first-team manager's spot in November. Mulhern reveals a previous brush with celebrity and an appearance on #BGT in 2017, plus the duo answer your social media questions including the big one; 'Would you rather have candy floss hands or biscuit feet?' If that wasn't enough excitement for you, there's also a look ahead to this Saturday's big games #CombiCorner and, of course, #Davereadstheweather. - #isleofman #manxfootball #podcast #nonleague #grassrootsfootball
This week's #ManxFootyPod is a #WoodsCup special, as we look ahead to Saturday's prelim round ties in the competition with Onchan manager David Rees (pictured) and combi keeper George Corrin. The pair also reflect on the Os' up-and-down campaigns in #JCKDivisionTwo and #JCKCombinationTwo. We also look ahead to the weekend's rearranged games in #CLPL and #ECAPFACup, while Dave hits us up with #CombiCorner and #DaveReadstheWeather. Warning - the latter doesn't make for pretty listening. - #IsleofMan #ManxFootball #podcast
Michelle Storton is Education Officer for Manx BirdLife and in her role, she is often ‘out in the field’ with young people, delivering birdwatching sessions to schools. As we are right in the middle of the RSPB Big Schools' Birdwatch it seemed the perfect time to go along with Michelle to witness one of her class visits. So Christy put on her warmest coat and went along to Ashley Hill School in Onchan, to see what she could see... The class visits include a short inside session about how to look for birds, what to look for and the different skills involved and the Schools Birdwatch runs until 21st February. Beth Espey, Howard Caine and Christy DeHaven present the latest episode of our Village Hall series from Onchan Village Hall.
An Onchan commissioner resigns, accusing board members of trying to undermine him and creating a bad atmosphere at meetings. But the local authority's chairman insists members are told to treat each other with respect, and heated discussion is part of the job. Two politicians/businessmen unveil plans for a £6 million commercial sports centre at King Williams College, insisting the facility will be available to all on an equal basis. We speak to commissioner David Parnell, and MHK Ralph Peake.
Bob Carswell delivers a weekly programme of great Manx Gaelic broadcasting and entertainment. William Gell takes us to a fish hatchery in Port Erin, introduces us to the Quayles of Crogga and William Christian of Ronaldsway (and takes a strangely dim view of Illiam Dhone, it must be said), calls in at King William's College and then remembers Sir James Gell. Although an Onchan man, William Gell spent some of his school days in Ballasalla, from where he attended Malew Church under the Rev William Gell. Our Manx story is a tale of greed overcome by hard technology. On this episode – new data on how many homes are needed in Douglas, Onchan, Braddan, Marown, and Laxey has sparked debate among politicians, It's ahead of the pre-inquiry meeting into the Eastern Area Plan, a document which once complete, will set out how land is zoned in the most populated part of the Island. Middle MHK Bill Shimmins is at odds with Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas on the issue of housing need, we hear from both of them.
A loss of planning status has left some in Crosby angry, as a development continues in the center of the village, and a proposal to link Onchan and Douglas with a new active travel route has put forward by the government as part of its active travel strategy.
Christy was joined on the Rock on 2nd Nov by Annie Kissack - teacher, composer, writer, singer, poet - whose life long passion for her native language music and dance was instilled in her by meeting much lauded folklorist Mona Douglas. Annie continues to play a hugely important part in keeping Manx culture alive - not least informing, educating and shaping future Manx generations with her work at the Bunschoill Gaelgagh, but also from her work Directing and writing for Manx language choir Caarjyn Cooidjagh, amongst other talents. Annie shared wonderful memories of her life growing up in Onchan, of her time with Mona and other notable Manx preservationists, of her time at University in Wales and the life lessons she learned there and, of course, she shared some equally wonderful pieces of music - from Manx staples, to Latin American baroque!
In 1893, Grover Cleveland discovered a cancerous tumor on the roof of his mouth. It was feared that public knowledge of the president's illness might set off a financial panic, so Cleveland suggested a daring plan: a secret surgery aboard a moving yacht. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the president's gamble -- and the courageous reporter who threatened to expose it. We'll also audit some wallabies and puzzle over some welcome neo-Nazis. Intro: Robert Louis Stevenson inadvertently borrowed much of Treasure Island from Washington Irving. When Graeme Gibson donated his parrot to the Toronto Zoo, it suddenly called after him. Manx Wildlife Week, Onchan’s Centenary Park & the impact of the weather on dairy farming
On 26th Jan 2018 our guest on the Conister Rock was the Island's very own 'starman' and astronomer Howard Parkin, an Onchan resident with his sights firmly set on the Dark Skies. Howard’s life seems to lead him on adventures at every turn – from live links with astronauts on the International Space Station, to the time when, in an attempt to have a fairly laid back family holiday, he actually found himself caught up in the mourning of notorious political figure Fidel Castro! But today, we settled back and listened in awe as he talked about the universe, about other life forms, light pollution and - of course - the Origins of Howard himself. With music ranging from the The Eagles to King Crimson, it was a fascinating hour and well worth listening back.
In-form #JCKDivisionTwo side #Onchan provide the guests for this week's #ManxFootyPod. Club stalwart Tristan Ringham (pictured) and first-team goalkeeper Rob Slinger talk about the Os' recent upturn in form and reveal what's behind the club's sudden success. The boys also discuss the second tier's promotion contenders as well as looking ahead to all Saturday's big games in Division Two and the #CLPL. #manxfootball #nonleague #football #isleofman
