In 1954, hundreds of Glasgow schoolchildren armed with makeshift weapons stormed the Southern Necropolis, hunting a towering, iron-toothed vampire they believed had already claimed two victims.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/GorbalsVampireREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/4xtvswmmFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: What caused hundreds of Scottish children in the 1950s to suddenly become vampire hunters? (The Gorbals Vampire) *** Over the years, from ancient to more modern times there have been a number of incredible cases of mass hysteria. Some are so unbelievable it's difficult to understand how they happened at all. (Ancient Cases of Mass Hysteria) *** Zachary Davis had a history of mental disturbance, but no one could have predicted the horrors he was truly capable of. (The Disturbing Story of Zachary Davis) *** When poor travelers are found dead in the frozen winter, could it be that there is something more to their story? Could they have been killed not by the cold, but by a demon of the snow? Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: January, 2019Weird Darkness moves from a 1950s Scottish vampire panic and centuries of mass hysteria through a Tennessee teenager's matricide, the vengeful Japanese snow demon Yuki-Onna, the bloodiest cabin in the Arizona desert, and a New York hermit who cooked the man he murdered. It opens on the evening of September 23, 1954, when hundreds of schoolchildren poured into the Southern Necropolis cemetery in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, Scotland, armed with sharpened stakes and knives to hunt a creature they called the vampire with iron teeth, blamed for abducting and killing two missing boys. Police could not clear the children from among the headstones, and only the rain finally drove them home, though the hunt resumed over the next two days. Although no children were actually missing, newspapers and Parliament blamed American horror comics such as Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror, a panic that drew in Labour MP Alice Cullen and led to the 1955 Children and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act, while others traced the iron-toothed monster to the Book of Daniel or to the Glasgow Green bogeywoman Jenny Wee. From the Gorbals the episode widens into centuries of mass hysteria: the first recorded case on an Egyptian papyrus dated to 1990 BC, children in a 1676 Dutch orphanage who barked and crawled like dogs, the 1374 dancing plague known as choreomania that seized the German town of Aachen, the Swedish witch panic of 1664 to 1676 and its children flown to the devil's meadow of Blakula, and French convent nuns who meowed in unison until soldiers threatened them with rods. The same survey takes in the 1630 poisoning terror of Milan that sent the barber Mora to torture and execution, the 1771 Okage Mairi pilgrimage that drew five million Japanese to the Ise Grand Shrine of Amaterasu Omikami, Richard A. Locke's 1835 Great Moon Hoax describing winged bat-men called Vespertilio-homo in the New York Sun, the Salem witch trials of 1692 that hanged nineteen people after the slave Tituba's confession, and the Hammersmith ghost of 1804 that ended when Francis Smith shot the plasterer Thomas Millwood dead in the dark. From there the focus shifts to Sumner County, Tennessee, where on August 10, 2012, fifteen-year-old Zachary Davis killed his sleeping mother, Melanie, striking her nearly twenty times with a sledgehammer he had carried up from the basement, acting on what he believed was the voice of his dead father. His father, Chris, had died of ALS in 2007, after which Vanderbilt psychiatrist Dr. Bradley Freeman diagnosed the boy with schizophrenia and depression before Melanie pulled him out of therapy. After the killing Davis doused the family game room in whiskey and gasoline and set it ablaze to kill his sixteen-year-old brother Josh, who woke to a smoke alarm and escaped while Davis fled on foot and was found roughly ten miles away. He told investigators he felt nothing when he killed her, laughed during a televised interview with Dr. Phil McGraw as he described the weapon and the wet sound it made, and was sentenced to life in prison after Judge D. David Gay told him he had gone to the dark side, with parole possible only after fifty-one years.Next the episode crosses into Japanese folklore and Yuki-Onna, the Lady of the Snow, a vengeful Onryo spirit said to have begun as a pregnant woman left to freeze in a mountain storm and to return on snowy nights as a tall, pale figure with blue lips and long black hair who floats over the drifts without leaving footprints. Her most famous tale follows two woodcutters, the old Mosaku and the young Minokichi, who shelter in a mountain hut where Yuki-Onna breathes a killing cold over Mosaku but spares Minokichi on the condition that he never speak of her. Years later Minokichi marries a woman named Oyuki who never seems to age, and when he finally recounts his strange night in the hut, Oyuki reveals that she is the snow demon herself and vanishes, sparing his life only for the sake of their children. After that the episode turns to the desert of Cochise County, southwest of Tombstone, Arizona, where the ruined adobe Brunckow Cabin earned its reputation as the bloodiest cabin in Arizona through at least twenty-one deaths. The German miner Frederick Brunckow built it in 1858 to work a San Pedro silver claim and was murdered there by his own laborers, killed with a rock drill driven into his abdomen alongside the chemist John Moss and the miner James Williams. The owners who followed met similar ends: Milton Duffield, the first U.S. Marshal of Arizona Territory, was shot dead at the cabin by James T. Holmes during an eviction, N.M. Rogers was killed by Apaches, and five thieves who hid there gunned one another down in a quarrel over stolen loot. Ed Scheifelin used the cabin as a base camp in 1877 before he founded and named nearby Tombstone, and visitors today report an apparition that fades when approached and the phantom sound of mining machinery drifting through the ruins. The episode closes with Oscar Beckwith, a seventy-two-year-old hermit living in a squalid shack in Austerlitz, New York, who on January 10, 1882, killed his mining partner Simon Vanderkoek over a soured gold claim near Alford, Massachusetts, then dismembered and cooked the body. A neighbor named Harrison Calkins smelled burning flesh at the shack and was told Beckwith was only frying pork rinds, but he returned the next day to find the mutilated remains, a blood-stained axe, and charred bones in the stove. Beckwith fled to Canada and evaded capture until the detective J.B. Gildersleeve tracked him to Bracebridge, Ontario, in 1885, by which time rumor had branded him the Cannibal of Austerlitz. Six trials sent him to the gallows in Hudson, New York, on March 1, 1888, where at seventy-eight he became both the oldest man and the last person hanged in the state, struggling at the end of the rope for eighteen minutes before he died.

Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 23rd of April Last week's HF propagation was dominated by the effects of a high-speed stream from a large coronal hole on the Sun. This pushed the Kp index up to 4 and 5 at times, with the result that maximum usable frequencies, or MUFs, were lowered. The ionosphere struggled, and often the MUF over a 3,000km path was below 21MHz. Yes, there were some openings up to 10m, but they were generally weak. Checks showed that paths opened up to Brazil, Kenya and Chile on the 10m band using FT8, but the signals were well down in the noise and barely workable. Get used to this, as it could be the norm for the next few years! Meanwhile, the solar flux index increased to 116 by Thursday, the 16th of April, no doubt aided by active sunspot group 4420. Next week, NOAA forecasts that the solar flux index could rise to 125. It also predicts that the Kp index may remain low due to a lack of coronal hole activity. Fingers crossed that we don't have any coronal mass ejections over the next week. If this pans out as predicted, we could have some decent HF conditions over the next seven days. Yes, the MUFs may be lower, but 14, 18 and perhaps 21MHz could be usable, with very occasional openings on 24 and 28MHz. DX to be worked this week includes TX9W from the Marquesas Islands; VP9KF in Bermuda; 7P8WR from Lesotho; C5B, C5C and C5D in The Gambia; D60DX in Comoros; and JD1BMH operating from Ogasawara And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The strong region of high pressure will remain with us for the next two weeks. So tropo should be considered a first-choice mode for a while. The main criteria for the quality of any resulting tropo is moisture. This is because moisture is a component in the calculation of the refractive index of the air. High pressure usually produces dry air above any temperature inversion, but we may not always get the moisture below the inversion. The end of last week was good with reports of beacons in Norway and Sweden into JO02 on 1.3GHz because of moisture present below the inversion. However, if the dry easterly wind returns, it may not go so well. Meteor scatter should continue to be uplifted by the declining Lyrids meteor stream, which peaked last week, and rain scatter is off the menu since the charts are dominated by high-pressure systems. Aurora is showing as occasional weak alerts, but apart from the odd fluttery signals on the LF bands, nothing too interesting at the moment. As usual, watch for the Kp index going up to 5. Keeping the best until last, we are approaching the period when Sporadic-E usually becomes a mode of interest. Work is well underway on a rewrite of the Propquest website, which should be ready soon. This will be the go-to place for the daily updates during the 2026 Sporadic-E season. EME now, and the Moon is moving into a lower noise position. Declination is high, but falling, and path losses will increase as we move away from the Moon's perigee, its closest point to Earth, which occurred on Friday, the 17th of April. Apogee, the Moon's furthest point from Earth and the point of highest path losses, occurs on Sunday, the 17th of May. And that's all from the propagation team this week.
John Moss takes a trip into the archives to bring you a programme from the 1990s, where David Callister and Terry Cringle share memories of the "Golden Age of Cinema".
For Remembrance Sunday, John Moss reflects on the reason why we pause today to recall those who laid down their lives, in particular those from a small island.
*ADVISORY: not for the fainthearted*.... John Moss marks the spookiest time of year with a deep dive into the local connections to one of the most enduring and terrifying monsters in literary and movie history.
76-year-old John Moss was apparently trying to throw police off the scent. Despite the sign hanging on the front of his house that said "Absolutely no drugs allowed on the premises" detectives found plenty inside. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
John Moss takes a look at the history of the ancient Tynwald Ceremony at St John's.
A bit of TT history...not on the course itself, but behind the scenes, with those who paint the picture for the thousands listening. Hear how Manx Radio brought the races to the people back in the day, as John Moss revisits an archive interview with Geoff Cannell, Charlie Webster and host David Callister.
In a special programme for Remembrance Sunday, John Moss reflects on the freedom we have today, because of war and conflict down the years.
Just under a quarter of a century ago, a maritime disaster shocked the Manx community. But it also united the Island with a small community across the Irish Sea. Why did the Solway Harvester sink? John Moss returns to the opening days of the winter of Millennium Year, 2000.

'Heart' of trail to lie north of Breakneck Officials from the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail on April 3 expressed a willingness to limit access to its planned Cold Spring-to-Beacon connector if visitors overwhelm it and threaten the environment or local communities. In a two-hour program, staff and consultants for HHFT, a subsidiary of the Poughkeepsie-based environmental group Scenic Hudson, outlined potential ways to reduce the impacts of the planned 7.5-mile linear park paralleling the Hudson River, Metro-North train tracks and Route 9D, a state highway. They said the path's "heart" and focus would lie between Breakneck Ridge and Dutchess Manor, at the southern tip of the Town of Fishkill, although plans call for a trail to begin in Cold Spring. The discussion, held at Dutchess Manor, centered on "visitation management," which John Moss, a consultant from ORCA (Operation Research Consulting Associates), said entails "balancing supply and demand. We don't want attendance to ever outpace the ability of the park or trail to support it." He added that "we recognize that it may be necessary, in a worst-case environment, to control entries into your trailhead, into your parking lot, to manage demand." Moss said he came to Cold Spring for firsthand research on busy weekends in 2023 and saw the crowds exiting Metro-North trains, the overflowing sidewalk trash cans, the long lines at the public restrooms on Main Street near the train tracks, and the traffic. "I completely understand what we've been up against," he said. Along with the other HHFT representatives, Moss suggested strategies to alleviate problems, such as signs to guide visitors; bathrooms at Dockside Park, Little Stony Point and the Breakneck and Notch trailheads; a visitor center at Dutchess Manor; 600 parking spots (including 235 new spaces); and a trailhead shuttle. "No Fjord Trail parking is intended in Cold Spring" and more parking between Cold Spring and Beacon will ensure that "it's not one big, aggregate mall parking lot in the middle of the trail corridor," Moss said. He said HHFT will manage and maintain the restrooms, shuttle operations, parking lots and other trail facilities. Al Shacklett, also with ORCA, said that, even without the Fjord Trail, heavy tourism is expected to continue and "conditions you see today are going to get worse" outside the Cold Spring restrooms. At present, about a third of village visitors are hikers, Shacklett said. He said that, in recent years, interest in Breakneck Ridge has appeared to drop while increasing at the Washburn trail, opposite Little Stony Point, just outside the village limit. With the Fjord Trail, he said, hikers will be steered toward picking up the trail at Breakneck, where the train stop is being upgraded. With those changes in place, Shacklett estimated that 50 percent of the hikers who now take the train to Cold Spring will instead continue to Breakneck. In that case, "we still have a surge, but the surge is much mitigated by the shift" from one station to another, he said. Shortly after the meeting, members of a Visitation Data Committee established to help HHFT with analysis issued a statement that outlined its concerns with recent Fjord Trail materials, including a claim that visitation to Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve had increased by 7.6 percent between 2016 and 2023, although, the committee members said, the state parks department reported a 10.7 percent increase. The five committee members, who include Nelsonville Mayor Chris Winward, argued that HHFT and its consultants had inadequately considered the effects of social media and marketing on visitation and the Highlands' proximity to population centers. "We hope that HHFT will revise their research" so that future reports can be "more reliable," the committee said. Responding on Monday (April 8), Amy Kacala, HHFT's executive director, called the committee's reaction "premature" because its "discussion and review of the visitation projection ...

John Moss is the CEO of Flintfox International, a pricing software company with world class IP in the areas of pricing and revenue management. He's previously worked as the Chief Strategy Officer and also General Manager of MYOB. John is also trained to use explosive and radioactive devices. In this episode, John talks about the work they do at Flintfox. He explains why pricing models should change in line with the updates constantly happening at present on software. Additionally, Mark and he discuss the complexity of pricing, especially in these days of high inflation. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Discover why pricing models in software businesses should change from time to time Understand the current situation and complexities in pricing, especially in this time of high inflation Find out how much of a game-changer it will be to have organizations focus more on pricing and not just in cost reduction “For many organizations, pricing has been off to the side and somebody who's got a quantitative bent will do that and look into it. I think there's an increasing need to employ experts in the organization that understand pricing, that understand pricing models, how you create value, and can help you manage through the current period of uncertainty.” – John Moss Topics Covered: 01:18 – How John got into pricing 02:37 – Lessons learned as they transitioned from transactional to subscription pricing 04:14 – Talking about the work Flintfox does 06:51 – What makes Flintfox different from other pricing software companies? 09:40 – Discussion about the complexity of pricing nowadays 11:20 – Avoiding channel conflict and posting things for the public to see 13:25 – The challenge of increasing prices during this period of inflation 18:02 – John, business software, and value-based pricing 22:36 – Pricing table topics: “Fixed costs never matter to pricing. Never, never, never.” 25:04 – John's pricing advice Key Takeaways: “Software is no longer build something, release it, and it stays stable and constant forever. Software nowadays is constantly evolving and changing, and so the pricing model for that product had to change as well.” – John Moss “It's increasingly important, I think, to have a good data set and an integrated data set to be able to understand exactly how your product portfolio is performing and what margins you're making.” – John Moss “We're seeing more people have the confidence to put through a higher increase in the expectation that they do it once and maybe it lasts for 9-12 months, as opposed to putting through 3% now and then come back in two or three months' time for another 3%, which that sort of attritional increase is probably less well received by customers than a big bang.” – John Moss “It's a consequence of software. What young people and you and I now expect is that software gets better all the time. I mean, we all see it every day. Every app we have on our phone gets updated all the time incrementally. But some of these applications do improve functionality quite significantly over a number of years. And so that's what you're paying for, effectively – the fact that the developers are still working on this product.” – John Moss People / Resources Mentioned: Flintfox International: https://www.flintfox.com/ MYOB: https://www.myob.com/ Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/ Connect with John Moss: LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnrmoss/ Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

One's mokuhanga journey takes many twists and turns. One can begin that journey at any age, at any time. For Andrew Stone that journey began at the age of 40, where in the last fifteen years or so, Andrew has done a deep dive into the nuances of the art form, from technique, to tools. His exploration into what makes mokuhanga, mokuhanga, is fascinating and important. On this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with mokuhanga printmaker and baren maker Andrew Stone. We speak about his Florence Baren Project, his own mokuhanga, his life in Italy, his meeting with baren maker Hidehiko Gotō. We discuss his philosophies on mokuhanga and baren making, what it takes to make such a beautiful tool like the baren, and how they function and work. In a 24hr period that saw no more than 3 teams sit a top the Premier League we have a look at both Manchester clubs wins, and Leicester's win over Chelsea. We're no stranger to offside discussions in football, but Bernardo Silva's opening goal has opened a whole new can of offside worms. (The worms weren't offside, but spoiler Rodri was) We discuss just how it was allowed to stand, and why it probably shouldn't have. Elsewhere in that game after much deliberating it turns out Dean Smith wasn't concerned for John Moss' Christmas day haul. Over at Craven Cottage, United returned to the summit with another Paul Pogba banger. Does he see this as his best chance at a league title with the Red Devils? And also, why swimming pools in football stadiums is a terrible idea for all involved. And finally Leicester City are title contenders and will remain so. Why we think expectations are too high at Chelsea, and West Ham get a small mention. There's is also Copa Del Rey action, and a little bit of history as well.

John Moss, Senior Vice-President with CBRE Canada, joins the podcast this week to discuss his enormous passion for retail, and how the work he does with tenants and landlords helps to build great experiences for communities across Calgary as well as how he’s always striving for a win-win.John’s passion for the retail and service industry begins with the start of his own career, having spent 14 years in the restaurant & hospitality industry. After a job at a movie theatre John started a job as a bus boy at Tony Roma’s at 14 years old, where he worked for the next 7 years and continued in the restaurant industry after moving to Calgary. He’s worked at a number of Calgary fixtures such as Cowboys, The Whiskey, and The Palace, and during his time worked basically every role possible in a restaurant from serving to bartending to dishwashing to managing. His break into commercial real estate came after completing his Commerce degree at MRU, and a regular client of his working in real estate saw potential in him and encouraged him to change industries. John Moss, Senior Vice-President with CBRE Canada, joins the podcast this week to discuss his enormous passion for retail, and how the work he does with tenants and landlords helps to build great experiences for communities across Calgary as well as how he's always striving for a win-win.John's passion for the retail and service industry begins with the start of his own career, having spent 14 years in the restaurant & hospitality industry. After a job at a movie theatre John started a job as a bus boy at Tony Roma's at 14 years old, where he worked for the next 7 years and continued in the restaurant industry after moving to Calgary. He's worked at a number of Calgary fixtures such as Cowboys, The Whiskey, and The Palace, and during his time worked basically every role possible in a restaurant from serving to bartending to dishwashing to managing. His break into commercial real estate came after completing his Commerce degree at MRU, and a regular client of his working in real estate saw potential in him and encouraged him to change industries. He'd take his passion for the retail and service industry with him to CBRE, where he specializes in helping tenants find locations, negotiate deals, and enter the market with great brand awareness. “As i learned about the industry it was apparent that I needed to stay in retail"With the Alberta economy opening back up we also discussed the types of innovations he has seen in the industry both during the quarantine and now during re-opening, and how important it is for us to support local so not everybody has to be a victim of Amazon. For everyone persuasion forms a huge part of what we all do. We tend to think that this is territory just for salespeople. There is a great deal we can all learn about how to move others to our point of view. In this session, we will focus on the techniques we can apply to get people there. There is a whole range of myths about how persuasion works and many are just that, myths that don't work.

Saints were painfully close to taking all three points on Saturday at Goodison Park. After taking the lead through a well worked team goal finished off by Nathan Redmond at the back post, Saints took the 1-0 lead into stoppage time, though they were light a man after Yoshida was sent off for picking up a second yellow in the 85th minute. Even after McCarthy made a spectacular save to deny Leighton Baines from a central free kick, John Moss let stoppage time enter the 6th minute of the 4 (no, that’s not an error), and, with the last kick of the match, Tom Davies’ effort from the top of the box took a deflection off of Wesley Hoedt and past an already committed McCarthy. The draw pulled Saints out of the relegation zone and puts all the pressure and focus on Tuesday night’s clash with Swansea and the Liberty Stadium. Harry Holder (@nadaIesque on Twitter), admin for @TheSaintsReport, joined me to discuss the match and how the other results affect Saints standing in the table. S5E9: After 38 Years Still Behind Bars for a Triple Murder that the Real Killer Confessed to on the Day of the Crime: The Unreal Saga of John Moss In December 1979, a triple murder shook the small town of St. Albans, WV. John Moss III was convicted in 1983 and sentenced to life in prison, and he has since served 38 years for this crime that he did not commit. Jason Flom teams up with Georgetown University Professor of Government and Law, Marc Howard, and his student, Jessica Scoratow, to interview John Moss from behind bars in West Virginia and unravel the saga behind this tragic miscarriage of justice. On December 13th, 1979, in St. Albans, WV, twenty-six-year-old Vanessa Reggettz and her two young children, Paul Eric and Bernadette, were strangled to death by electrical cords. The murders were gruesome–Vanessa was brutally beaten and stabbed with scissors, Paul Eric was left in a bathtub, and Bernadette was hung from a door. Paul Reggettz, the husband of Vanessa and the father of Bernadette and Paul Eric, was immediately taken into custody and after being interrogated for hours, he confessed in graphic detail and reenacted the crime for investigators. Reggettz was indicted on three counts of first-degree murder and held in pre-trial detention for eleven months. Charges were dropped, however, when John Moss, a 17-year-old former neighbor, was arrested for the murders instead. In October 1980, West Virginia State Police investigators traveled to interview John Moss in Ohio, where he was being held in juvenile detention for an unrelated crime. John denied any involvement in the murders, and the troopers took a blood sample from him without his parents’ consent or a court order. They returned to pick him up five months later to take him into custody. The policemen in the car claimed that John confessed to the murders. He then gave a tape-recorded confession. The police stated that John confessed again a third time, but there is no recording or written record of the confession. John maintains that he was coerced, beaten, and threatened during interrogations. Armed with these confessions, however, Kanawha County, West Virginia authorities charged John Moss with three counts of first-degree murder and brought him to Charleston to stand trial for the Reggettz slayings in 1985. Importantly, there was blood at the scene of the crime that did not match any of the family members, and the blood was found to match Moss’s blood type. The blood sample was tested by Fred Zain, the infamous lab technician later convicted of falsifying blood evidence in over 134 cases spanning decades, and later destroyed after the conviction. On April 30, 1983, John Moss was convicted of the murders after fourteen hours of jury deliberation and sentenced to three life sentences without the possibility of parole in 1985. He was convicted again in 1990 after his first trial was thrown out for judicial errors in jury polling and prosecutorial misconduct. John Moss has been incarcerated in West Virginia for 38 years, filing numerous appeals alleging ineffective assistance of counsel and challenging Fred Zain's testimony, the validity of his confessions, and arguments about the purportedly stolen items. His appeals have thus far been unsuccessful, and without new evidence, his options for further appeals are limited.
