William Gell's 1906 poem, Mannin Veg Veen, has brought us to Port Erin, and here we pause to look at the work of a frequent visitor to the Island, and particularly to Port Erin, the writer Arnold Bennett. We then compare what he has to say about the view from Bradda with what William Gell writes, but Gell bustles us up the coast to St Patrick's Isle.We conclude the Manx translation of the story by the Brothers Grimm about the band of six, of whom five are men of extraordinary specialist traits, and they're led by a disgruntled soldier, discharged from the army after sterling service, who's determined that the king will pay over all his treasures before he's done with him. The next story is about a greedy but crafty cook called Grethel. As y kiaull ain 'syn earroo shoh jeh'n chlaare -CLASH VOOAR - Kione SpaineyPISKEY LED - Come all good Cornish boysDAMIEN MULLANE - EvokeBENDITH - Can am gariadJANICE BURNS & JON DORAN - Up an' awa'ZONK - HuanadCAARJYN COOIDJAGH - Manannan Beg balladANNIE BAYLIS - Karten bostBOYS OF THE LOUGH - A midwinter waltz/Bridgie Con Mat's/ The lakes of Sligo/Thadelo's polka

From the Calf, William Gell's attention switches to the Chickens in his 1906 poetic tour of the Island, Mannin Veg Veen. Going round to Port Erin, we look at William Milner's association with it, including the tower on Bradda Head. Though Gell doesn't mention him, we also look at Arnold Bennett, who set a chapter of his 1902 novel, Anna of the Five Towns, in Port Erin, and that was by no means the only work of his set in the village. In a translation into Manx, we're looking at the rather odd tales of the Brothers Grimm, and a disgruntled discharged soldier has collected a motley crew of five people with extraordinary gifts. A king has offered his daughter in marriage to anyone who can beat her in a race, and our ex-soldier puts up one of the band - but if he loses, they both lose their heads!Shoh yn kiaull t'ain y cheayrt shoh -DIAOULEZ AR MENEZ - La quadrature du rondCHRISTINE BREGAZZI - A sea visionMIKE O'CONNOR - The Zeak waltzALTAN - Ma theann tu 'un aonaighCILMERI - CilmeriANNA MURRAY - Traditional wedding reelMONA KERYS - An durzunellMATT CREER - Ny boallyn shohMIKE O'CONNOR - Come to Good

101-year-old Port Erin resident James Fenton was a Bombardier with 178 Field Regiment of the Royal Artillery during WWII. At the age of 20, he was sent to fight in the steamy jungles of Burma as part of the 14th Army, the so-called “Forgotten Army”. Listen now to James's incredible story in full, as part of Remembrance 2023. James recalls his exploits in Primary Training and thoughts on life when he was posted to the far east. From dealing with the hazards of malaria ridden mosquitos, snakes and scorpions to the daily onslaught of shelling by the Japanese army. James always had a passion for art and photography and recalls developing films whilst under a tarpaulin as the enemy sent wave after wave of mortars into his camp. After the war and a career in design, James moved to the Isle of Man to open the photographic museum in Port Erin.

The title of the exhibition, The Winkle Pickers, refers to the nickname that many residents of Port Erin gave to those who worked and studied at the Laboratory. It was a great tragedy that such a well respected institute had to close in 2006 and good to hear from winkle pickers Peter Duncan, Andy Brand, and Jeremy Paul and Hugh Davidson from the Rushen Heritage Trust.

On today's programme, we explore the role of the Permanent Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, in conversation with Graeme Easton, a parishioner of St Columba's church in Port Erin. On Saturday 23 July in St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Hill Street, Douglas, Graeme will be ordained as a Permanent Deacon, by Bishop Tom Williams, an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Liverpool, of which the Catholic Churches on the Island form a part. Graeme talks about the selection process, his training, and his future role in Church life on the Island. Along the way, he dispels some of the misunderstandings about what a deacon is - and what he is not! There's a warm welcome for all to come to share in Graeme's ordination Mass on Saturday 23rd at 5pm - it's in St Mary's Catholic Church on Hill Street, Douglas and music will be provided by Rushen Silver Band. And if you're interested in learning more about becoming a Permanent Deacon, there's a MEN'S INFORMATION MORNING next Saturday, 23rd July, in St Anthony's Parochial Centre, Onchan from 11am to 1pm, when Director of the Permanent Diaconate, Canon Chris Fallon, and his team, will be making a presentation on the role of the deacon, and answering any questions. There's no need to reserve a place - just come along - and wives are most welcome too. Adam Laughton is part of the team at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-on-Avon - a venue which showcases genres of music traditionally considered highbrow, while ensuring performances are fully inclusive, with workshops, events and rehearsal space to encourage teenagers to take up classical instruments and join youth orchestras and singing groups. On our playlist, Adam picks a live recording performance by Bristol's Fitzhardinge Consort. NB: Always pick and gather responsibly - don't take a lot of one item from the same place, don't uproot plants, never go on to private land without permission and of course, obey all relevant regulations regarding CoVid-19.
