POPULARITY
We lost one of the kings of pop culture, a much beloved creative force, and one of the people who was responsible for making comic books what they are today. He made us believe in characters who were larger than life, but somehow still down to earth, and shone a light on prejudice (X-Men), diversity (Black Panther, Luke Cage, Jean Grey, Black Widow, She-Hulk), mental health (Hulk, Ant-Man), and physical disability (Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Iron Man), at a time when such issues were ignored or disparaged. On this week's episode Andrew, Mick and Rob pay tribute to one of the 20th and 21st century's greatest pop culture icons - the late, the great Stan Lee, who made us believe in heroes again and again. After a sombre start it's time to talk about what we've been reading, which this week are Sullivan’s Sluggers by Mark Andrew Smith & James Stokoe, EXO by Jerry Frissen & Philippe Scoffoni, the first volume of The Seven Deadly Sins spinoff manga series Seven Days by You Kokikuji, the first volume of Boarding School Juliet by Yousuke Kaneda, Deadpool: Assassin and the Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network anthology. This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is??Gladstone???s School for World Conquerors, by??Mark Andrew Smith and Armand Villavert Jr. Set in a top secret school for young and aspiring super-villains (themselves predominantly the offspring of super-villains), the series follows the hijinks and adventures of a group of students. All is???as is so [???]
Pairing with "Attack the Block,” the short stories this time around deal with conflicts surrounding the topic of race juxtaposed with the ugliness that racial prejudice can bring out in people. Andrew's pick is a Neo-Pulp adventure in the vain of Conan meets Flash Gordon, where we see what lies within the "Lost Vaults of Mars.” Sometimes the cost of everything is everything as we get into a heavy discussion of race and politics when talking about "Space Traders.” MangaMatt closes the episode with a Kickstarter-funded horror-action comic pitting a down and out baseball team against a town of demonic derelicts in "Sullivan's Sluggers". Jermaine, Stephen, Frank and Griffin are joined by AWP new-comer Michael Hammett for a little segment we like to call "Hammett Time!". But first everyone needs to work out their differences over the latest Kickstarter controversy, and then it's a Marvel-free installment of Comics at the Table for the first time in the show's 20 month history! Show Notes: Sullivan's Sluggers on Kickstarter. "The A to B Manifesto. The creator as retailer." from Mark Andrew Smith's Tumblr. "Big hauls on Kickstarter no longer a rarity as Sullivan's Sluggers clears the bases" at Comics Beat.com. The gang recording the show, with photography by Jody. Comics at the Table - Mind MGMT #1, Batman Incorporated #1, Youngblood #1, Justice League Dark #9, Batman the Dark Knight #9 and All Star Western #9.
Much doom and gloom and all-around depressing stuff the first hour as we wade hip-deep into The Walking Dead volume 14 from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard (NOTE: If you want to skip ahead, you'll be fine if you jump to the 47:20 minute mark!), after which we elevate with elaboration on Falling Skies, Will Pfeifer and Jill Thompson's excellent Finals under the Vertigo Resurrected banner, Baltimore: The Plague Ships by Mignola and Ben Stenbeck from Dark Horse, the I...Vampire! serial by J. M. DeMatteis and Tom Sutton from the pages of House of Mystery, Wolverine and Jubilee, Rogue's X-marks, Deathmate, Joe Casey's Butcher Baker #3 and Marijuanaman from Image and Infantry under the DDP Aftermath imprint, 28 Days Later, Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth volume three, Avengers Academy Giant-Size, Aspen's Executive Assistant Iris Volume 1 from David Whol and Eduardo Francisco, Hickman's Red Wing, Scarlet, Gladstone's School for World Conquerors by Mark Andrew Smith and Image, and a whole mess more!
April 28,2011 - Mark Andrew Smith lives and teaches English in Taiwain, but over the past few years he's amassed a number of credits and accolades in the comics industry. He co-created the Eisner Award winning Popgun anthology series and developed a number of creator-owned works through Image Comics. 2011 sees the debut of a new all-ages ongoing called Gladstone's School for World Conquerors as well as a second volume of his celebrated New Brighton Archaeological Society. Mark talks to us about the perils and pitfalls of producing all-ages work and discusses both failures and successes in crowdsourcing through Kickstarter.
