In today's episode, I'm diving deep into a topic that might make you feel a bit uncomfortable: disconnecting and unplugging. If you're anything like me, you've probably found yourself endlessly scrolling through social media, feeling overwhelmed, and possibly even inadequate. The truth is, most of us are online more than we should be, often not in ways that benefit ourselves or our businesses. This episode is about recognizing the cycle of social media addiction, understanding the real costs—like decision fatigue and burnout—and implementing boundaries. I'll share personal insights and practical steps that have helped me, such as having sacred offline time and aggressively unfollowing sources of negative comparison. Let's explore how taking time offline can actually spark creativity and clarity in our businesses. Trust me, your best ideas are waiting for you off the screen! **Key Takeaways:** 1. Unplug regularly to clear your mind and spark creativity. 2. Avoid decision fatigue by making routine decisions easy. 3. Be proactive, focusing on your business strategy. 4. Set offline boundaries to recharge. 5. Unfollow negativity; protect your self-esteem.
When you scroll through social media, how does it make you feel? If the answer is angry, exhausted, or scared, that's not going to help you in business or life. On this Mindset Monday, I'll take you through why it's time to start cleaning up what you follow on social.
We've come a long way. But not necessarily in the right direction. From the the nostalgic days of AOL Instant Messenger to 2026's high-stakes, algorithmic landscape, constant connectivity has fundamentally shifted our attention spans, our peace of mind, and the way we show up for our families. Worse, the desire to show up online often takes us directly out of real life. It's no surprise, then, that we're feeling the mental and emotional weight of the "scroll". We don't have to throw our phones in a lake to find the reprieve we desperately need. On today's show author Emily Feldpausch argues that it isn't about rejecting technology. It's about reclaiming the intentionality that the algorithms try to take away. Here's a preview: [5:00] Reflections on the shift from the early days of AIM and MySpace to the current user experience that often feels designed against us [8:45] How being always on has eroded our collective sense of peace and altered the dynamics of modern family life [18:00] How to stop checking in and start being present [23:00] A candid look at 2026 internet culture, from shopping hauls to harmful beauty standards. Send us Fan MailMy guest this week is the wonderful Brianna Madia. Back in 2016, with her then husband and her dogs, Brianna moved into their 1990 Ford van and started sharing her life on Instagram. Her following grew quickly and she became one of the first van life influencers — which has led to brand deals and three book deals — as people became fascinated with her colourful, interesting and adventurous life, much of which was spent in the desert in deepest darkest Utah. Then, one fateful day, one of her beloved dogs, Dagwood, was caught under the wheel of their van in a tragic accident, with her ex-husband at the wheel and her in the passenger seat. They drove 6 hours to get Dagwood to a vetinary hospital to save him. In the meantime, Brianna's Mum started a Go Fund Me page to help with the extortionate cost of the vet bills, and Brianna's generous followers kindly covered the cost; however, in an attempt to protect her ex, she didn't initially tell her followers that it was him at the wheel. Dagwood survived, but the whole thing was the beginning of the end of her relationship, as well as the start of a pretty dark phase in her life. Following their split, Brianna subsequently came clean about the fact that her ex had been driving the van when Dagwood was run over, and what followed was a hate campaign of vitriol and bullying that saw an entire community form on Reddit purely to take her down - resulting in losing several brand deals. The worst thing was that Brianna discovered that her ex had actually joined the Reddit thread and was fueling the fire of all of this hate. Brianna's brilliant new book, Homesick Nomad, is the story of what followed, including a new - but unconventional - relationship with a man called William. Brianna, who is childfree by choice, still lives in her trailer in the desert in Utah, while William lives in Oregon. In our conversation we talk about so many things including some of what she went through with regards the hate she received and essentially being cancelled on the internet, her love of solitude, her choice to not have kids, and last but not least her beloved dogs, including Dagwood who sadly passed in November last year. Freedom comes from systems.Full show notes hereThe DisruptersWith Liz FarrFor CPA TrendlinesSharrin Fuller isn't your typical accountant. For one, she's not a CPA. She doesn't have an accounting degree. She didn't even go to college. But despite lacking what most consider the usual credentials and following “the most unconventional and broken path possible,” she managed to build and sell two successful accounting firms. Fuller recounts this story in her new book, Unfollow the Rules: The Messy Truth About Burnout, Bad Decisions, and Building Until It Works. Her book was originally intended to be a how-to guide, but halfway through the process, she changed her mind. “I don't want to write this book telling people this is how you should do it,” she explains. “I needed to be vulnerable so people could understand how I got to the point that I got to.”

“For most of our lives, women have been told that if we look a certain way and behave a certain way, the world will unfold for us. Only to reach midlife and find that, for most of us, it isn't true, and the booby prize is that apparently we now have to spend yet more time and money obsessing about how to claw our way back to a place of acceptance that never existed.” In this episode I speak to Poorna Bell — award-winning journalist, author, and former UK executive editor for HuffPost — to talk about her new book She Wanted More, the cultural shift happening among women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and why the conversation around midlife needs to change. Poorna describes the atmosphere before her 40th birthday as apocalyptic, with friends talking about it like the end of the world, and society treating 40 as a cliff edge. Surprisingly, to her, the world didn't end. In fact, things got better. Over the five years since, she's watched her life move on an upwards trajectory, something society never told her was possible. She Wanted More is her response to that gap between what women are told about midlife and what actually happens when you're in it. Poorna noticed women all around her in their 40s, 50s, and 60s making fundamentally different choices than previous generations. Whether that was questioning relationships, redefining career success, opting out of motherhood, or choosing to remain single after divorce. The traditional markers of success (money, power, nuclear family structures) are being interrogated. Women are asking: What do I actually want? What is purpose for me? This isn't a book prescribing one way to live. It's about creating agency — doing an inventory of your life and asking yourself: What do I need to feel power and intention in my own life? Poorna advocates for reclaiming the word ‘climacteric' because it better captures the magnitude of what's happening in the menopause transition. It sounds dramatic because it is dramatic. She describes her own symptoms as "giant stingrays carrying dread, despair, and fear" — a visceral image that will resonate with anyone who's experienced perimenopausal anxiety and that pervasive sense of doom. Poorna surveyed around 1,000 women for the book, and one surprising finding was the fear younger women now have about perimenopause. Media coverage has skewed heavily negative, and many women in their 20s and 30s are genuinely terrified. Poorna's response? We need balance. Yes, some women have brutal experiences. But many don't. The goal isn't to sugarcoat it or pretend it's all wonderful, but to give women the full picture so they can prepare without catastrophizing. Poorna quotes Ashley Kelch in the book: "The most disruptive act in midlife isn't leaving your job or your relationship. It's leaving behind the version of yourself that you created in order to survive." For Poorna, that meant shedding the version of herself that was palatable, agreeable, and constantly performing. She describes younger Poorna as someone who would say yes to everything, who prioritized being liked over being authentic. Midlife gave her permission to stop. She's learned to listen to her body's signals, to say no without guilt, to recognize when she simply doesn't have the spoons for something, and to honour that without shame. The global anti-aging market is set to be worth $80 billion in four years. Poorna calls it "the same shit, repackaged" — a relentless marketing machine selling women the idea that looking young is the only way to remain valuable. And yet, when she asked the women she surveyed what getting older meant to them, not one mentioned looks. They talked about freedom, contentment, peacefulness, having options. So how do we opt out of this pressure? Poorna's advice: stop engaging with the narratives that don't serve you. Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate. Surround yourself with images and stories of women who are thriving in midlife on their own terms. Representation matters — and we have more control over our media diet than we think. One of the most moving parts of the book is Poorna's conversation with her own mother about her early life before becoming a mother. Her mother had a place at university. Everything was paid for. But her grandfather wouldn't let her go because it would have meant living with a family he didn't approve of. Later, when her mother's employer suggested she take auditor exams, her father dismissed it: "You're going back to India to get married soon, so there's no point." Listening to her mother recount this, Poorna felt rage. She could see the brightness, the potential, the intelligence — and the loss of what could have been. That conversation made Poorna softer and more compassionate with her mother. She now asks anyone whose mother is still around: have that conversation. Ask about their life before you were on the scene. Their answers won't be defensive because they're not connected to you as a person — they're just telling you their story. It's precious. Key Takeaways: Midlife isn't a cliff edge. Society lies. Your 40s, 50s, and 60s can be an upwards trajectory if you let them be. Question the definitions of success you've inherited. Money and power aren't the only measures. What does success mean to you? Let go of the version of yourself you created to survive. Midlife is permission to stop performing and start being. Listen to your body's signals. If you don't have the spoons, you don't have the spoons. Honour that. Opt out of anti-aging narratives that don't serve you. Curate your media diet. Surround yourself with images of women thriving in midlife. Talk to your mother about her early life. If she's still around and you have a relationship with her, ask about who she was before you existed. You'll learn something profound. Sharrin Fuller has built and sold two accounting firms, and the second time around, she knew exactly what mistakes to avoid, except for one she didn't see coming. On Episode 252 of The Unique CPA, she tells Randy that the business side of an exit is straightforward, but the emotional aftermath? That sent her into two levels of counseling and off her life insurance policy due to skyrocketing blood pressure. Now, as founder of Glass Wallet Ventures, she helps firm owners prepare for exits they may not even be planning yet, because by the time someone puts a letter of intent in front of you, it's already too late to maximize value. Sharrin challenges the "we've always done it that way" mentality that keeps accountants stuck in dependency traps, and her approach is simple: fix one thing at a time, give firm owners back 30 minutes of their day, and only then move onto the next problem. Sharrin is proof that working three days a week isn't a fantasy when you build systems that actually stick. Get the full show notes and more resources at RandyCrabtree.com

Look what I found - a powerful reminder for myself that I also saw something yesterday that my daughter showed me. This comes from Gratitude HQ (@gratefuledu64) and they shared this: “Let's be that person, who roots for others. Who tells a stranger they look amazing and encourages others to believe in themselves and their dreams.” What happened to simply being happy for others when they find something that fires them up? Why is it that so many people have to “dump” on people for sharing things that they are excited about? Why is it so hard to just smile and say to yourself, I'm happy for that person… good for them? To me, this is something that so many people need help with - including me. I need to be a better encourager. I need to keep rooting for the underdogs in life. Truthfully, if it's something that I don't agree with or don't like - I can simply keep scrolling or like I just did - hit the UNFOLLOW button, instead of piling on criticism, negative feedback, etc. Now, there are times for sure to “REPLY” to others and not be silent, but for the most part it doesn't have to be every single time you see things you don't like or simply want to rag on someone for being happy. Just my 2.5 cents. Thanks for listening. Do unfollows on social media really mean drama in the cheer world? Or is it just self-care in disguise? When a cheer gym unfollows a family online, is it a petty move… or a healthy boundary? In this candid, laugh-filled episode, Jason Larkins sits down with Kristen Wheeler (aka “K-Dub” of the Cheer Mom Blog and Podcast) to dive deep into the emotional maze of social media, gym loyalty, and assumptions in the competitive cheer world. Whether you're a coach, a parent, or a cheerleader yourself, these are questions you've likely faced—or will soon. Inside this episode, you'll discover: Why gym owners might really unfollow families on social media—and why it's not always shade. How parents can balance personal boundaries with community connection in youth sports. The power of assuming positive intent—and how this one mindset shift can de-escalate almost any cheer drama.
