POPULARITY
Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year. Gerry on BlueSky Scott's website The Dark Room Volume 2 from Image Comics From the publisher Gerry Duggan (X-Men & Uncanny Avengers) rejoins your favorite artists Scott & Tamra for the anticipated return of your favorite fantasy/horror/comedy series! Dounia, her ex, a werewolf, and her pal Walt, an incandescent blue skeleton, are joined by a mysterious psionicist fresh from a terrible prison. This time the world is threatened by a powerful old Necromancer that's resurrecting the dead from Finland's Winter War. More curses, more threats, zombies, wizards, cursed objects and the threat of the war to finally end mankind. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. Nightcrawler's parentage recon gets another recon back to what it was supposed to be this whole time, in a surprisingly touching story. Let's talk about it, and a lot of other Krakoa. Comics read: Uncanny Spider-Man #4-5, X-Men Blue: Origins #1, X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #112-120, Uncanny Avengers vol 4 #5, Invincible Iron Man vol 5 #13, Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace #1-4, Realm of X #2-4, Jean Grey vol 2 #2-4, Immortal X-Men #16-18.
The Arakko civil war reaches its conclusion and Storm continues to be the world's greatest badass. So let's just talk about that forever. For real though, I'm down. Will & Steve comics: Jean Grey vol 2 #1, Dark X-Men vol 2 #4-5, X-Men: Red vol 2 #14-18, X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #106-111, Uncanny Avengers vol 4 #2-4, X-Men vol 6 #27-29. I'm pumped about this show because it gives me a first on the podcast to be able to talk about the transection of two visual mediums that I love, photography and comics and I couldn't ask for a better guest to discuss all that with than Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, the Hulk, and the X-Men.) Gerry has a new photography book coming out this Fall called Timing/Luck which contains over 200 pages of material covering two decades of writing and green rooms, city streets around the world, and documenting part of his own journey during COVID as a non-clinical volunteer. We also chat about some of his various photographic influences, different cameras, AI, and about his creator owned project The Dark Room and bit about the new West Coast Avengers launch with Marvel. It's one of my favorite episodes and getting to share his passion about both mediums is a gift. Make sure to follow Gerry's Substack. A few things we talked about in the episode: Vivian Maier Photographer documentary on Disney + Salvation Mountain NEW PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I'll be uploading a story every Sunday about some of the crazy things I've gotten into over the years. The first one dropped last week about me relocating a drug lord's sharks. Yes, it did happen, and the alligators didn't even get in the way. Want to know more, you know what to do. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Late pledges are enabled if you happen to hear about it after the campaign officially ends. Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? Make sure to check out our partner Arkenforge. Gen Con is only a few days away now, and I was lucky enough to get at least one more guest in the studio to talk about the big convention. Today it's our old friend, Jim Zub! Jim is best known for his work in the comic book industry, which he has been creating since he self-published Makeshift Miracle in 2001. Over the past 21 years, he has created a vast library of titles ranging from creator-owned books like Wayward, Skullkickers, Glitterbomb, and Stone Star - to big-name properties such as Samurai Jack, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Uncanny Avengers, Wolverine, and even a Rick and Morty / D&D crossover. The boys head to the Amazon to review Madame Web's dead movie trailer and What If S2's first trailer; they talk Mr. Fantastic casting news which is probably a lie; lots of discussion around the final episode of season 2 of Loki and go into Wolverine's past once again for Old Soldiers (S5E7 X-men TAS); there's the issues: Dark X-men #4, Uncanny Avengers #4, Children of the Vault #4, Alpha Flight #4, Astonishing Iceman #4, and Jean Grey #4; then some not so spooky plugs.
