Last time Gerry Duggan was on the show, we were talking about his photography project Timing/Luck and ironically what made me a fan of his work isn't The X-Men or any other of the of great titles and characters he's penned and developed over the years, what made me fall in love with it was a breakdancing skeleton named Walt. You might be asking yourself why that may be. A few years ago I lost one of my best friends to a motorcycle accident and at the time while processing the grief as best I could, Walt dropped in the pages of The Dark Room, a book Gerry cooked up with the uber talented Magic Johnson of comics Scott Buoncristiano. Walt's energy was a mirror image of my friend Tommy's, and it turns out The Dark Room was a project centered around the loss of one of Gerry and Scott's mutual friends so this project has been one of dealing with grief through comedy, and I'm forever grateful to them both for being willing to share that vulnerability with the world. This series will go down as one of my favorite of all time and it was a pleasure to get a chance to pick Gerry and Scott's brains about some of the motivations behind it in advance of the second volume being released later this year. Gerry on BlueSky Scott's website The Dark Room Volume 2 from Image Comics From the publisher Gerry Duggan (X-Men & Uncanny Avengers) rejoins your favorite artists Scott & Tamra for the anticipated return of your favorite fantasy/horror/comedy series! Dounia, her ex, a werewolf, and her pal Walt, an incandescent blue skeleton, are joined by a mysterious psionicist fresh from a terrible prison. This time the world is threatened by a powerful old Necromancer that's resurrecting the dead from Finland's Winter War. More curses, more threats, zombies, wizards, cursed objects and the threat of the war to finally end mankind. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. I'm pumped about this show because it gives me a first on the podcast to be able to talk about the transection of two visual mediums that I love, photography and comics and I couldn't ask for a better guest to discuss all that with than Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, the Hulk, and the X-Men.) Gerry has a new photography book coming out this Fall called Timing/Luck which contains over 200 pages of material covering two decades of writing and green rooms, city streets around the world, and documenting part of his own journey during COVID as a non-clinical volunteer. We also chat about some of his various photographic influences, different cameras, AI, and about his creator owned project The Dark Room and bit about the new West Coast Avengers launch with Marvel. It's one of my favorite episodes and getting to share his passion about both mediums is a gift. Make sure to follow Gerry's Substack. A few things we talked about in the episode: Vivian Maier Photographer documentary on Disney + Salvation Mountain NEW PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. The horror-comedy tells a fast-paced, cautionary tale about systems designed to control expression and behavior and explores how society organizes itself when ratings affect your day-to-day life. With humor, horror, and the repercussions of nonexistent humanity, DEATH RATIO'D offers readers a fresh look at how today's social practices can be pushed to the extreme and do anything but bring the world closer together.Mark Russell, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! To start, Death Ratio'd…man this is a work of genius. Where did you start with this scary look at a social media nightmare future? How do you personally feel about social media?Do you feel like this is where we're heading? Laci's art reminds me of Steve Pugh's in a way, which makes me wonder, do you look for a certain kind of art style when you have the chance to find a collaborator? This week… Sora is OpenAI's new text-to-video model and we discuss the tech, the incredible videos & the implications for everyone. Plus, Reddit is licensing its data to an AI company & Google Gemini got ANOTHER update. AND THEN… an interview with comic book writer Gerry Duggan! He is NOT a fan of generative AI but Kevin and Gavin use the opportunity to discuss how the creative community views AI and different possible approaches to take going forward. Also, Kevin shows off the GUI for LIGEN (we'll explain), Gavin tries to get puns out of ChatGPT and fails and, unfortunately for all of us, we talk about Midjourney'd rat genitalia. Oh and our AI co-host this week is our old PR friend, Sheila, who's back on our show again after the Monster Milk debacle. She gives us some advice on how to do deal with ‘haters' and then, yes, drinks Monster Milk again. To start, you're a busy guy who has written so many kinds of stories, and with Pine and Merrimac out in January I'm curious, how long has this story been kicking around in your head?I love a wife guy. Any chance we'll see more of their first case together?Fran Galan's art is spectacular, the use of color so great, what would you say the visual “vibe” is for the series?Do you have any favorite detective stories, be it comics, movies, or TV?There's a missing persons case in the first issue, how much research goes into real-life cases to know you've got the right angle on a mystery?Maybe it's because it's the end of the year and end-of-year lists are coming out, but I need to ask: have you played Alan Wake 2, the year's best detective video game?Back in October, you wrapped up Peacemaker tries hard. With six issues under your belt, do you feel like you understand the character even better? You're also writing a Wild Dog story that kicked off in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #7, the first chapter has such great cadence and pace, what makes Wild Dog so fun to write? If detective agency Pine and Merrimac had to take on a case with Peacemaker OR Wild Dog, would they take it?

I can't help but see some parallels! How did your work on that series about a girl gang with a badass lead vocalist prepare you for Birds of Prey? With a few issues under your belt at this point, I'm sure, is there a character that floats to the top of most fun to write? Follow up, who is a character that surprises you the most?We all know Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire are gosh darn gifts to the comics community. Were there particular visual moments that impressed you or surprised you in the first issue or two that you'd like to shout out?Something that always impresses me is your dialogue, particularly with groups! I've come to learn after interviewing different writers the approach to writing good dialogue can be different. Is there a particular technique you use in writing dialogue, or feeling out how different characters will approach one another? We're greatly enjoying Black Cloak at AIPT, which presents a fully realized new world. How do you approach worldbuilding? Is there a Black Cloak Bible? (Folks should definitely check out the finale next week.)You also have The Cull coming out from Image Comics on August 16th, described as horrifying and delightful with a group even the press release calls reminiscent of the Goonies. When creating an entirely new friend group, how do you go about crafting their personalities and making them a unit, but separate?Anything else you'd like to promote today? Where can people find you?

Nerd Poker is turning 10 years old! And Dan has something sneaky up his sleeve to surprise the rest of the cast, but you get to know before you listen. Gerry shows up, and we all sip wine and Scotch while goofing off, talking about old games, doing bits way off the rails, and generally being dumb.
