This week the crew talk about SO MANY INDIE COMICS! They do a deep dive on three upcoming books with varying themes, styles and stories and talk about the power of storytelling, classic concepts delivered well and revisiting some old characters! Theres also discussion of mothers in comics, some more Punisher chat and the sad loss of the legendary Akira Toriyama (Dragonball Z). Plus even more indie comics to add to your wishlists and immature humour as you'd expect from the three amigos! Humanoids, the Los Angeles-based publisher of some of the world's most iconic and groundbreaking science fiction and fantasy graphic novels, will publish Eisner-nominated writer/artist Ibrahim Moustafa's graphic novel RETROACTIVE, a sci-fi tale about an agent working for the U.S. Bureau of Temporal Affairs who sets out to discover the source of several anomalies in the timeline—only to become imprisoned in an inescapable time loop. The book is being published on April 26, 2022 as part of a three-book deal between Moustafa and Humanoids, the first of which was the critically acclaimed graphic novel COUNT, which re-imagined the story of The Count of Monte Cristo. In RETROACTIVE, the discovery of time travel is unknown to the general public, but a new Cold War rages between global intelligence agencies as they attempt to alter historical events in favor of their respective futures. When new intel points the U.S. Bureau of Temporal Affairs (BTA) toward a hostile anomaly in the past, veteran field agent Tarik Abdelnasser and his new partner, Lucia Olmos, are dispatched to investigate. They discover a radical adversary wielding a new technology that could unravel everything the BTA fights to maintain. As Tarik gets closer to the truth, he finds himself trapped in a time loop where an imminent terrorist attack, and his own death, trigger the day to restart. He must keep his sanity intact and find a way to prevent the attack, escape the loop, and return to his own timeline to thwart the destruction of the BTA and everyone inside of it. "I'm so thrilled to bring another book to life with Humanoids,” said Ibrahim Moustafa. “They've given me the creative autonomy to tell the kinds of stories that I'm most passionate about, and I'm very excited to share this work that the rest of the creative team and I are so proud of. Brad Simpson (colors) and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (letters) are at their very best on RETROACTIVE, and I can't wait for people to see what we made together under the stewardship of Rob Levin, one of the best editors in the industry." Ibrahim Moustafa is an illustrator and comic book writer/artist from Portland, Oregon. Best known for his Eisner-nominated comics Jaeger and High Crimes as well as his work on titles such as James Bond and DC's Mother Panic, he has been published by DC Entertainment, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Dark Horse Comics, BOOM! Studios, Valiant Entertainment, and IDW Publishing. Richter Tell our listeners about yourselves and how you came to collaborate on the original Buckaroo Banzai. As I recall, the original script went through a number of forms. One of the elements I love about the movie and the novel are the constant callbacks - like an editor's note in a Marvel comic - was this a conscious decision to adopt a comic book convention? Were there any comics you were reading at the time?Against the World Crime League was originally teased at the end of the film. How has this story evolved from its original conception? And why was a novel the right medium?I have to ask about my favorite film, Big Trouble in Little China - Much like Buckaroo, Jack Burton has endured. What is it about these characters that connect with audiences all these years later?Without spoiling anything - things are looking pretty bleak for Buckaroo and the Hong Kong Cavaliers at the start of this book. Were these big changes always in the cards? The multiverse is hotter than ever right now, if you could have a Buckaroo crossover with any movie or comic book character, what would it be and why?Has Mike Richardson pitched you to open up a Buckaroo Banzai comic series? Are you reading or watching anything right now that you'd like to put on our listeners' radars?

Ninjak has been in the works for some time, announced way back in July 2020, is it odd talking about a book that's so long in development, or par for the course in comics?Ninjak has been rebooted and retooled various times over the years, how are you approaching the character? With the pandemic's delay, did you end up tweaking this story more than past tales you've written, or did it stay pretty close to your original pitch.?Can you talk a bit about Javier Pulido's work, was there a specific page in the first issue that he exceeded your expectations? What separates Ninjak from other rich and tactful superheroes? In your opinion, how does Valiant differ from other publishers? The super spy angle of Ninjak has always been a big draw. Do you have any spy movies or books you look to for inspiration or to get you in the headspace to write Ninjak? We're big James Bond fans here, loved your James Bond Origin and recently talked to Ibrahim Moustafa about Bond as well, we must ask, who do you think is the definitive Bond?Future Quest and Batman 66 were books of yours that we reviewed and greatly enjoyed, do you have a desire to return to either of those projects in the future, or are there other series you'd like to return to some day? What other projects do you have in the works? What comics are you reading right now?Off Topic Top Shelf: Jeff Parker - Beer!

Thanks to iFanboy Patrons, it's Talksplode time. Ibrahim Moustafa has made a very cool career in comics over the last decade. As a kid very into breakdancing in the Pacific Northwest, he decided to make a go at being a comics artist. Since that time, he has drawn for Marvel and DC, been nominated for an Eisner for High Crimes, created several of his own stories, written and drawn James Bond comics, culminating in the recent release of the graphic novel, Count, from Humanoids. The first of a three book deal from Humanoids, it's a sci-fi reimagining of the classic The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. It's a fantastic success story in comics, and there's even some iFanboy history in there as well. Follow Ibrahim on Twitter. and Instagram, as well as his website.
