The Walking Dead's Charlie Adlard joins us this week to talk comic books, kaiju and the iconic art of Saul Bass. Together we check out Bass' sole feature as a director, Phase IV (1974), followed by Destroy All Monsters (1968), directed by Ishiro Honda. It's not really possible to spoil Destroy All Monsters but we will call out Spoiler Territory for Phase IV. If you want to skip ahead from that point, you can rejoin the conversation at the 1:14:28 mark to avoid spoilers. Want to get in touch? You can reach us on caliber9fromouterspace@gmail.com For the best overview of Charlie Adlard's amazing career as one of the world's foremost comic book artists, go to charlieadlard.com His latest book, Heretic is available on Amazon and via all good booksellers. Look out for his upcoming book, Altamont, which is slated for an English language release later in 2025. Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. Check out HKM on #SoundCloud or Bandcamp

The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore – who was the artist on the first six issues and cover artist for the first twenty-four – with art on the remainder of the series by Charlie Adlard. Beginning in 2003 and published by Image Comics, the series ran for 193 issues, with Kirkman unexpectedly ending the series in 2019. Apart from a few specials, the comic was published primarily in black and white. It began publishing colorized versions issue by issue, colored by Dave McCaig, starting in October 2020. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

We can't put 2023 to bed without releasing our very last episode of the year, The Stampies: The Best Comics of 2023 (Part Two). Continuing the celebration from last week's Part One, we push into several other major categories, highlighting the exceptional art birthed into the universe by this beautiful medium. Aiding our love-in our numerous friends from the comics journalism and podcasting community. Frankly, too many wonderful comics were released in 2023, so it's always a blessing to have friends champion so many other titles. In this episode, we also unveil the first annual Jesse Tapia II "Champ Stamp" to a comics creator deserving of wider recognition and acclaim. This particular Stampie is offered in loving memory of our friend Jesse Tapia II, who sadly passed away in late 2023. Jesse was a magnificent and passionate comic book advocate, bringing joy and a comic recommendation to everyone he interacted with. We hope to live up to his tremendous enthusiasm for the art form. As we welcome a new year, we must thank every one of our listeners. You enriched our lives in ways that are hard to put into words. Five years ago, we started this podcast in the hope that there were a few others like us out there, eager to approach comics from a place of love and self-introspection. Finding you validated that dream. Thank you. We love you. Let's keep on' keepin' on in 2024. Read more comics. Make more comics. Love more comics. It's here - The Stampies: Best Comics of 2023 (Part One)! For the last two months, we've scrambled to read all the comics we missed during the year and compiled a gargantuan list of favorites. As far as the comics medium was concerned, 2023 was an impressively massive year for quality books. And once again, squeezing the best comics into one CBCC episode proved impossible. Of course, we couldn't read all the comics. So, if there is a personal favorite you see missing from our Stampies, please let us know. We're in this for discovery and want to read the comics you loved the most in 2023. Thankfully, we invited several colleagues to jump on the phone with this love-in and name their 2023 faves. You better get some scrap paper because you'll want to tally these books up on your own to-read list. Below are the timestamps for our categories and links to our most generous guests.
A savoir : Thor: Love and Thunder She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Werewolf By Night The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 Rien que ça. Et aux micros vous retrouverez donc évidemment Manon, mais aussi Quentin, Océane, Manu et Corentin de First Print ! Bonne écoute ! * Corentin a demandé et on nous a gentiment dit oui.
This is episode 3/3.To wrap things up at DRAWN 2023 we thought it was a great idea to sit down with our good friend Charlie Adlard, co-creator of The Walking Dead, comic-book royalty and one of the most iconic UK artists, y'know that guy. With a little help from Leon, Cherie Jerrard and Pearl, Alex gets deep into conversation about, well, everything really. We wrote a list and yeah, they pretty much covered everything in the history of things, and a little bit of art talk at the end. However, the conversations about horror movies, wild festivals and whether pineapple belongs on pizza are all a lot of fun. Plus, what they discussed about art at the end, is advice that is so poignant Alex isolated it for a soundbite. It was that good. The point of this episode is, it doesn't matter how big an artist can get. It doesn't matter how many items Charlie has sold over time, he is just as down to earth as anybody and this conversation reflects that. It is the things that move around us that makes us tick the way we do. So it is important to explore what people see around them. This episode is that, in regards to Charlie Adlard. Thanks of course to Charlie for this, to my trusty co-hosts Leon, Pearl and Cherie Jerrard too! This year's DRAWN was fantastic, I loved our little corner of the warehouse, it was a fun place to be and we really enjoyed speaking to all of you. Thanks everyone! - AL

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the established annual celebration of prestige comic artists, creators and publishers, once again took over a picturesque town in the UK's Lake District... but this time they weren't setting up their stalls in Kendal. Instead, they had moved beside your actual lake - I know, how novel! - with LICAF holding court in Bowness-On-Windermere over the weekend of Friday 14th-Sunday 16th October. I wasn't able to make it to the rest of the weekend's festivities - missing, by all accounts, some amazing panels. signings and appearances by world-renowned comic superstars, a performance by Charlie Adlard and his band, karaoke that will only be saved in the memory of those there and some boozy nights! However, what I took in on the Sunday was more than enough to tell me that this iteration of The Lakes International Comic Art Festival continues in the trend of a very respectable and enjoyable comic celebration. During my day, I managed to attend a number of panels featuring some of the world's finest comic artists and writers, including this session with celebrated prose and comics writer Greg Rucka (BLACK MAGICK / STUMPTOWN / LAZURUS) who pulled no punches and barely drew breath as he dived deep into his meager family background, his introductions to and motivations for writing, and his forthright thoughts on the business of getting a certain style of story either published or on the big and small screens. It's quite the ride - but you'd expect nothing less from Greg Rucka. Enjoy this lively chat, hosted by Chris Thompson (@popculturehound)

During my day, I managed to speak to a number of creatives who had been exhibiting at the show, including Rachael Smith who was basking in the glow of not only raving plaudits and reviews for her books - including the re-released WIRED UP WRONG and the standout of the lockdown QUARANTINE COMIX - but also of impending motherhood with a bairn on imminent arrival! Rachael talks to how QUARANTINE COMIX was being received by the Lakes crowds, how her weekend in the Comics Marketplace had gone and what was next for her and her work... Lyndon talks to me about the move of the Lakes from Kendal to Windermere, how that affects any trade creators need to do to justify the transition, how the books have been received over the weekend and what's on the horizon for his work...

Follow AL as he takes a walk through Shrewsbury's finest comicbook festival. We were there at the beginning, when Comics Salopia first began all those years ago, so it was nice to take a walk and check out the vibes in 2022. AL speaks to many artists in this medley of interviews. Including John Wagner, Kev F. Sutherland, Mike Perkins, Beef Beff, Poppy aka Vivid Bunnie, Sasha The Scribbler, Dave Gibbons, Charlie Adlard and Andrew Lawden. AL could only be about for a couple of hours that day, but there was a really positive energy felt from the Museum right up to the Castle in Shrewsbury. There were Spider-Men roaming around, amazing talks happening in the Museum and plenty to look at. These guys are the backbone of what culture is today. Whether you're into your Marvel or DC, Umbrella Academy, The Boys or simple things like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and so much. These are ideas that started of as a comic book/Graphic Novel! It is events like Comic Salopia that really help remind us that the real rock stars are the writers, artists and publishers who give the art a platform to grow. There are a couple of examples in this podcast. John Wagner - Judge Dredd, went on to made into 2 huge blockbuster movies plus A History of Violence, a graphic novel that was turned into a movie starring Viggo Mortensen. Charlie Adlard - The Walking Dead...come on do we need to say more. Dave Gibbons - Watchmen to this day is one of the highest grossing comic books of all time. There was a stunning movie adaption made in 2009 and a TV series which sent shockwaves across the world in 2019. If it wasn't for creative geniuses like this the world would be a miserable place indeed. Enjoy...
We bring you a collection of interviews that were collected during a day where Shrewsbury was flexing it's creative muscles with 2 events happening on the same day. AL speaks to Sue Mann who organised the art exhibition for the Belle Vue Arts Festival at the Barnarbas Centre in Coleham. They discuss the challenges and the joys of putting the artwork together. Next AL sets off to Belmont in Shrewsbury Town to the Hive Street Festival, where all things "arts" was being celebrated. AL spoke to light artist Andy Mckeown, Maggie Love (aka Queen of the Street, Town Crier - Martin Wood and The Walking Dead artist - Charlie Adlard. What a town we live in. When it comes to creative minds, Shrewsbury is not lacking at all. Events like these and the many wonderful peers this town has, is surely a catalyst for the creative mind. It is always an honour to be out and about speaking to you lovely people so, thank you! - AL

The Shrewsbury Biscuit welcomes Charlie Adlard to the show. AL, Shane and Julie speak to Charlie, who is the co-creator of The Walking Dead, one of the best selling independent Comic-Books in the world. Charlie is not only an icon in the world of comic-books, but is a bit of a Shrewsbury legend (although he would modestly disagree). Despite his worldwide acclaim, Charlie is a proud Salopian and he works hard to inspire others. Whether it be his ambassadorial role at The Hive, helping organise the local Comics Salopia Festival with Shane Chebsey or appearing on plucky local podcasts (ahem!) We begin with how things began for Charlie and the journey that's taken him to the top of the comic-book food chain, including his own personal inspirations. We also find out how AL and Shane almost stumbled upon a worldwide exclusive of one of the most baller, mic drop moments in Comic-book history.
AL, Jodie and Shane welcome in honorary Team Biscuit member Adam (not George) to join them to recap their first day at Comics Salopia. They are later joined by Sam, who was instrumental in the running of things at The Guildhall throughout the day. The group discuss events that were going on throughout the town, the amazing people that they interviewed and AL talks about his embarrassing stolen handshake incident with Charlie Adlard. Lots more to come from Comics Salopia via The Biscuit, this is just a taster....enjoy!
