Kriss, Ro, Brandon and Ashley review the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel. This is Marvel's first solo film for a female character and they do a pretty good job. Brie Larson does a great job (despite all the white fanboy hate prior to the film) and really owns the role of Carol. We also talk about how Lashana Lynch and Akira Akbar should be getting more praise for their roles in this film and how their characters help this movie avoid some tropes that happen with female characters. This film also serves as a semi-origin story for Nick Fury and fits well into filling in th history of the MCU and how we got to the point of bringing the Avengers together. Stay for the two after credit scenes (the first being the one to get you hype for End Game) and the Stan Lee Tribute and cameo will make you cry.  Like what you hear? We lost the legend Stan Lee 2 weeks ago. The comic book world mourned along with everyone else. The outpouring of love and support for Stan came in droves and still continues. Like many, we had a short experience with him. Back in 2006, Producer Joe and Jimmy interviewed him via phone and delved deep into his early years. An amazing conversation to be sure. And in 2012, Jimmy got to meet Stan in person and do a quick 2 minute walk and talk interview with him. While but a moment, it was an honor and privilege to be in the presence of such a genuinely kind, loving, and funny force of nature!  Jimmy gives his thoughts on those interviews and Stan himself. As does Producer Joe. Plus, we thought we'd play those interviews again so you wouldn't have to dig them up. We hope you enjoy this fond memory that we have of him as much as we did revisiting it. Thank you, Stan. For being such an important part of the comic book world and a pop culture icon. For being Marvel's (and comic books in general) biggest cheerleader. For always finding a way to make us laugh. And for just being you. As always...EXCELSIOR! We'll be looking for your next awesome cameo in our dreams! Thanks for listening!

Days of Future Podcast: Examining the X-Men

In this episode, we pay our respects to the legendary Stan "The Man" Lee, co-creator of the X-Men (with artist Jack Kirby). Lee's recent passing was felt all around the world, and of course we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss his role in the X-Universe. He might have only written 19 issues of the original title, but the entire X-Men legacy owes much to Lee...not just many of the classic characters, but also the very ideals of tolerance and acceptance that he crafted into the franchise early on. We share our own thoughts on what Lee meant to us, as well as take an alphabetical look at just some of the many characters Lee helped created during his storied run. Plus, Trev reviews the current "Extermination" event, which is wrapping up the story of the time-displaced original teen X-Men, as well as the first issue of the brand new "Uncanny X-Men," which sees Marvel restore that name as the flagship X-title. What does Trev think of the new direction the X-books appear to be heading? Listen to find out...as well as another chapter of the still-raging "Is DIE HARD a Christmas movie" debate!  Dave takes a little time at the beginning of this episode to laud Stan Lee and express his continued dissatisfaction with The Comics Journal. Then your hosts launch into a discussion of Wolfman and Perez's most space operatic effort yet. Topics include: the narrator's shabby (and contradictory) treatment of those cuddly purple Branx warriors, Dark Phoenix/X'Hal, the Titans' tenuous-to-nonexistent commitment to the sanctity of non-human life, and the utter useless of Demonia.  We conclude the episode with some thoughts occasioned by Elise's discovery of a 1983 TCJ Interview with Marv Wolfman (speaking with Dwight R. Decker).    Audio Credits: Intro music: Debbie Harry - "Comic Books"

Stan Lee was a huge inspiration to many people, and one of the big reasons we even started this podcast. We talk about what Stan and Marvel mean to us, favorite characters, cameos, stories, and more. We also take the time to give Bill Maher a piece of our mind on his disrespectful comments last week. Side Note, I mispronounced Maher's name on purpose and I hope it catches on lol. This one is for all pop culture fans, fanboys, fangirls, cosplayers, comiccon attendees, movie lovers, and anyone that believes we’re all part of one big family, the human family, like Stan Lee wanted. Thank you Stan for all you've done and legends never die! We lost one of the kings of pop culture, a much beloved creative force, and one of the people who was responsible for making comic books what they are today. He made us believe in characters who were larger than life, but somehow still down to earth, and shone a light on prejudice (X-Men), diversity (Black Panther, Luke Cage, Jean Grey, Black Widow, She-Hulk), mental health (Hulk, Ant-Man), and physical disability (Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Iron Man), at a time when such issues were ignored or disparaged.  On this week's episode Andrew, Mick and Rob pay tribute to one of the 20th and 21st century's greatest pop culture icons - the late, the great Stan Lee, who made us believe in heroes again and again.  After a sombre start it's time to talk about what we've been reading, which this week are Sullivan’s Sluggers by Mark Andrew Smith & James Stokoe, EXO by Jerry Frissen & Philippe Scoffoni, the first volume of The Seven Deadly Sins spinoff manga series Seven Days by You Kokikuji, the first volume of Boarding School Juliet by Yousuke Kaneda, Deadpool: Assassin and the Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network anthology.  Until next time, Excelsior! The number of heroes and villains he created and how his mind works when it comes to creating comic book characters. There were other topics that were discussed such as his lesser known achievements, for example his battle against censorship and his creation of Epic illustrated which resulted in Akira being released first in Epic Illustrated. We also spoke about his famous cameo appearances in nearly every Marvel movie to other movies that were not related to marvel and future Stan Lee cameos. Also discussed were Stan Lee’s contributions to creative endeavours such as in the anime and manga industry which resulted in 2 anime series and a couple of manga appearances, also his contribution to science and technology. We also spoke about how Stan Lee introduced merchandising through the use of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. While Stan Lee may be gone, other comic book artists will hopefully carry his torch, people such as Jim Lee. We also spoke about Stan Lee’s works on the Silver surfer comics especially Silver Surfer Parable which was collaborated with Moebius and also Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer ultimate cosmic experience. We even made comments about how he looked like in his younger days. During our recording his funeral service was conducted in private and a tribute is in the works. All in all, Stan Lee was a man who cemented his legacy through his works, his ethics and his view on life. The world will never be the same without you.
