Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. It wasn’t that long ago that Tulsa and Oklahoma were living in the dark ages. It was a time when we were a land of 3.2 Bud heavies and Bud Lights, so people had to travel long distances to get certain strong beers. Some may have even died from dysentery on the trail. The year was 2007. It was then Eric Marshall, my guest on this episode, returned to his hometown after studying the art of brewing in Munich, Germany. There he was awarded the prestigious International Diploma in Brewing Technology from the World Brewing Academy. Within a year Marshall Brewing Company became Tulsa’s first production craft microbrewery. It was the dawn of a new age in Tulsa. As Marshall six packs of Sundown Wheat flew off the liquor store shelves and McNellie's Pub Ale flowed out of McNellie's taps, other Tulsans began brewing their own beers and launching their own companies. Soon beer options were all over the spectrum from super hoppy to sour beers featuring artistic labels. In less than a decade a brewery district had formed just east of downtown and to the west of the Marshall Brewery located on 6th St about midway between Utica and Lewis. In this conversation, Eric looks back at those early days of brewing and the revolution his company started in Tulsa. He also talks about how his work went beyond the brewery and to help modernize Oklahoma’s alcohol laws. When voters approved State Question 792 in Nov. 2016, it opened the doors to taprooms statewide and created the opportunity for brewers to enter grocery store distribution without reducing the alcohol content of their beers. Eric is a proud Tulsan, who graduated from the University of Tulsa. We discuss how much has changed for the better in Tulsa in this phone conversation that occurred on the first day of Fall. We start this conversation with how things have been going since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Tulsa. There’s been bumps, but there’s also been some fun like the Marshall beer collaboration with Brian Horton for the release of “Back to Paradise: A Tulsa Tribute to Okie Music.”I had a great time chatting with Eric and getting to hear his perspective on the industry and enjoyed hearing him talk about his love for Tulsa. Following that conversation, Voice digital editor and music writer Kyra Bruce shares the song “Spit (You Out)” by Rainbeaux. More on that later. Ok let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Eric Marshall.

This is one we've been excited for. When we stumbled upon this Atlas IPA from Marshall Brewing Company, we quickly put the call out for this titanic beer bearing our namesake. Nurse Recruiter Mark Lau was able to work some magic and his traveler Devin Beatty came through in a big way. Not only was Devin in the area where this beer is made, but he got us some Atlas-themed swag from Marshall Brewing, too! We chat about Atlas-themed beer, crack open this IPA, and discuss other Tulsa points of random trivia like native Garth Brooks, and the fact that it was the shooting location for 1989 cult classic "UHF". Special thanks to Devin and Mark for working together to surprise us with this craft beer. Now we just need Marshall to send us a giant framed print of that gorgeous Atlas art to hang in our office....

For our 200th Episode and to celebrate 5 years of doing the show, the fine humans of Marshall Brewing Company were kind enough to let us use some space in their beautiful new taproom to do a podcast.  Wes Alexander, the director of marketing and sales for Marshall, joins the show to discuss the law changes that went into effect October 1, what's still to come for the new taproom, and generally impart beer knowledge on us all. In addition to Wes' appearance on the show, we brought former Tulsa podcaster Jason Ferguson out of retirement to talk with us about the history of the show, where it's been and going, as well as discussion about favorite beers and other aspects of craft beer that we have learned while doing the show. Then, to round out the celebration, a friend of the show and avid craft beer drinker, Joe, joins us while we discuss our first memories of drinking craft/non-macro/different beer.   Enormous thank you to everyone who listens to the show, follows us on social media, welcomes us into their breweries, taprooms, and businesses for the show, and generally supports what we are doing here on Pub Talk.  Special thanks to our respective significant others for putting up with us doing this every week and being supportive of the podcast! 00:00:00 - Ryan and Juliana sit down with Kevin Hoch (@krhoch) to talk about pterosaurs! They're not dinosaurs but they're still great. We begin with some pterosaur basics to make sure everyone is up to speed. 00:21:52 - Much like pterosaurs at presumably some point in the past, we are in Tulsa, OK. Kevin provides some beer, including a Bump in the Road from Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing for Ryan and Kevin, and a Sundown Wheat from Marshall Brewing Company for Juliana. PSA: Don't touch dead armadillos. 00:28:20 - Next we grill Kevin about his maters research where he took a close look at Rhamphorhynchus, including scans of a 3D skull from Germany. We also touch on the cryptid beast the "Ropen" thought by some to be pterosaurs that have survived to modern day (spoiler: they haven't). 00:49:01 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like the evolution of flight; they've both happened more than once. Just Ryan for this segment and he's got a question Liam T. about the limits of biology when it comes to identifying species, especially from the fossil record and our own hominid lineage. What started as a small home-brewing project in a spare bedroom is now one of Tulsa's favorite beer companies. But with obstacles like antiquated alcohol laws, skepticism about craft breweries, and manufacturing mishaps (i.e. bottles exploding on shelves), Marshall Brewing was far from an overnight success. Listen as founder Eric Marshall talks about connecting with the right people to fight negative stigmas and blaze the trail for microbrewers in Oklahoma.
