25-Year Tax Veteran Answers the Crypto Tax Questions People Ask Too Late

Mahad Mohamed is a senior crypto tax and accounting specialist with over 25 years of experience in public accounting and tax advisory. His background includes work with Big Four firms and government tax authorities, giving him deep insight into regulatory review and enforcement.Mahad Mohamed is the CEO of Block3 Finance, a firm dedicated exclusively to cryptocurrency taxation, accounting, and advisory. He recently joined the Bitcoin.com News Podcast to talk how cryptocurrency is taxed, primarily in Canada and the U.S., and what traders, investors, and builders need to understand to stay compliant.Mahad advises crypto traders, investors, and builders on reporting, audits, and long-term tax structure, with deep expertise across Bitcoin, high-volume trading, DeFi, staking, NFTs, mining, and cross-border crypto activity. His work is focused on audit-ready reporting, clean records, and defensible tax positions that stand up under real regulatory scrutiny.Block3 Finance works with clients operating across centralized exchanges and on-chain protocols, delivering accurate reporting, audit support, and tax structures aligned with current regulatory expectations. The firm places strong emphasis on clean records, defensible positions, and practical decision-making that holds up under real scrutiny. You can book a free 30-minute consultation at calendly.com/mahadblock3finance, tailored to your unique crypto activity, to understand your exposure, reporting obligations, and next steps before issues become costly.A major topic of discussion this episode was the misunderstanding that taxes only apply when cashing out to fiat; in reality, every crypto transaction, including selling, swapping, and spending, is a taxable event, with no minimum threshold for reporting gains. Tax authorities like the CRA, Revenue Quebec, and the IRS inquire about crypto use on tax returns, and the CRA recently sent 440,000 audit letters to inquire if recipients are crypto users. Tax agencies look closely at whether a user is an investor or a day trader, often using an eight-page questionnaire with about 30 questions to assess the user's involvement. A key distinction involves the volume of transactions; having more than 10 to 15 transactions a year, or more than 15 staking/reward transactions, can flag a user as a day trader. Automated trading is also a strong indicator of being a day trader. If classified as a day trader, income is taxed as business income at high personal marginal tax rates, versus a capital gain. Mahad strongly recommends that day traders incorporate, as a corporation's tax rate in Canada is only 12.2% on gains up to half a million, and personal assets can be transferred to the corporation using a Section 85 Rollover. Specific crypto activities are also addressed: staking rewards and airdrops are taxable at their fair market value upon receipt, and the daily nature of these payments can increase the risk of being classified as a day trader. Winnings from prediction markets are taxable, unlike lottery winnings in Canada, because they involve crypto as the medium of prediction. Losses from hacks or exchange failures are not automatic write-offs; they require proper documentation, such as filing a police report and obtaining a federal file number, which Block3 Finance uses to defend the loss claims if audited.Looking ahead, Mahad predicts an increase in audits, on-chain analysis, and less tolerance for errors from governments as education and awareness become more widespread. Global data sharing is also imminent, with the Common Reporting Standard on Crypto-Assets (CARF) set to begin in 2027, meaning tax authorities will have access to international wallet information. Finally, he emphasizes the importance of estate planning, urging crypto users to have an up-to-date will and proper documentation to ensure that beneficiaries and executives can access their crypto, wallets, and seed phrases, noting that "death and taxes are both guaranteed".

We admit we might have been wrong about the NBA East (it's actually good?), while the West—and specifically the Lakers—may be a total flop. Naturally, this leads to another round of bashing Anthony Davis. Plus, Vince shares his "culinary" experience at Texas Roadhouse.

Plus, we learn about the gay hockey romance genre.

Guest speaker Shane Winnings, CEO of Promise Keepers and former missionary, delivers a powerful message at Godspeak Calvary Chapel from Philippians 1, challenging believers to endure trials with unwavering faith and to live for Christ's glory rather than worldly pursuits. Reflecting on his military and police background, including a grueling Seattle Marathon with a rucksack, Winnings emphasizes that true spiritual strength emerges through suffering, drawing parallels to Paul's joy in prison. He urges the congregation to shift their perspective from fitting Christ into life's plans to making Him the pursuit, using the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego's resolve to trust God “even if” He doesn't deliver. Winnings' closing prayer calls for repentance and a renewed focus on Christ, aligning with Godspeak's mission of biblical application and cultural engagement.Reference VersesProverbs 11 verse 30, Matthew 13 verses 3–23, Romans 5 verses 3–5, Psalm 139 verse 8, Matthew 6 verses 25–34, Philippians 1 verses 1–30, Philippians 2 verses 14–16, 1 John 3 verse 2, 1 John 4 verse 17, John 17 verse 3, Romans 6 verse 23, Proverbs 16 verse 9, Daniel 3 verses 16–18, 1 Peter 4 verse 12, Matthew 19 verse 24Make sure you subscribe to this channel and follow us on all our platforms to always stay up to date with our latest content! And you can always head over to our website for any general information! https://godspeak.comPrayer/NeedsIf you have any needs, or have a willingness to be used to meet various need in the body, please email info@godspeak.com. Financial Ethics Series: Should Christians Play the Lottery? with Dr. David W. Jones

“A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.” - Proverbs 28:20Powerball jackpots and scratch-off tickets might seem like a shortcut to financial freedom, but should Christians be buying in? Dr. David W. Jones returns to our financial ethics series today to help us think biblically about the lottery and whether it aligns with a life of faithful stewardship.Dr. David W. Jones is Senior Professor of Christian Ethics at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Christian Financial Ethics and is the author of Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians.Quick Wealth vs. Steady StewardshipProverbs 13:11 warns, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” Hebrews 13:5 exhorts believers to “keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” These passages highlight the value of work, patience, and contentment—virtues that stand in direct contrast to the quick-fix allure of lottery winnings. The lottery promises flourishing without labor, but God's design in Genesis 1 calls us to be co-creators with Him—to work, to produce, and to flourish through effort. Skipping that process isn't just unwise—it violates God's design for human flourishing. Is playing the lottery merely harmless entertainment? We should pay close attention to what our financial decisions reveal: Jesus taught, ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matt. 6:21). If someone regularly spends money on lottery tickets, it could point to deeper issues—discontentment, greed, or misplaced hope.Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our actions—including how we spend—are often the most honest indicators of our spiritual condition.Entertainment or Exploitation? While scratching a ticket at a birthday party may seem harmless, there's a big difference between a one-time event and a habitual lifestyle of gambling. And even if the act is permissible, that doesn't make it wise (1 Cor. 10:23).We must also consider the industry behind the lottery. It preys upon the poor. Statistics show that the lowest-income Americans buy more than half of all lottery tickets, with some spending up to 6% of their income. In many ways, it functions like a regressive tax, taking from those who can least afford it.Some believers wonder whether it's ethical to accept scholarships or grants funded by state lotteries. Of course, there's room for Christian liberty here. Some will choose to opt-out due to conscience. Others will recognize we live in a fallen world and may receive such benefits without directly participating in the system. Either way, we should be aware of what we're engaging with and remain open before the Lord.A Better Way to FlourishIf you're feeling convicted, confess it to the Lord. ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us' (1 John 1:9). And as with any area of struggle, don't walk alone. Seek accountability and encouragement through your local church.Ultimately, the Christian life invites us to a different kind of richness—one rooted not in luck or chance but in trust and obedience. As Ecclesiastes 3:13 says, “Everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.”For more biblical insight on wealth and stewardship, pick up Dr. David W. Jones's book Every Good Thing: An Introduction to the Material World and the Common Good for Christians, available wherever books are sold.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Around this time last year, I had several credit cards with balances ranging from $5,000 to $6,000 each. This week on The Tax Factor Neil Insull and Suzanne Briggs look at Reform’s controversial proposal for a 'Britannia Card' that would let wealthy foreigners pay a £250k fee to move to the UK and live exempt from all tax, and a significant rise in HMRC investigations into high earners, signalling a more aggressive compliance strategy. Elsewhere, the tax gap among SMEs is growing - what’s causing it, and how might it be closed? Plus, in estate planning news, Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis may have struck the right chord with tax planning that could legally bypass £80 million in inheritance tax. And finally, as Wimbledon serves up bigger prize pots, Neil and Suzanne reveal how it’s also serving HMRC a bigger slice of the winnings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Summary While recording episodes 26 and 27 of the In/organic Podcast, Ayelet and Christian delved into a small rabbit hole, discussing buyer and seller dynamics in transactions involving unsophisticated buyers and sellers - a term commonly used in the industry. We clarify in the video that unsophisticated really means buyers who do not do a lot of acquiring or sellers who are usually selling their company for the first time and do not have good M&A counsel. We did not get into the details in this recording, but the key takaways are: If you are a first time seller: 1) Be Informed: Retain experienced M&A counsel - that is an attorney who specializes in M&A (which is different from a business lawyer who touches M&A, but is not a transactional lawyer by trade). Most M&A lawyers are already in your network and are willing to offer 1-2 hours of off-book time to help with key considerations before getting too far along in the process. 2) Ask the sellers questions. If you don't understand terms or if there is anything that is unclear, go ahead and ask. For example, if you are offered $10 million for your business, is that all cash, a closing, or something else? If it includes stock in the sellers company, you have a right to ask for some information from the acquiring company ("reverse diligence") in order to qualify the value of the stock in the company relative to the value you are exchanging. If you are an unsophisticated buyer: 1) Get Ahead of Legal: Don't let the lawyers be the first ones to bring forward terms that will economically impact the deal without having spoken about it first. Example things are escrow, reps & warranties insurance, special indemnities, discounts to EBITDA derived from quality of earnings analysis. When you are 5 steps ahead of key negotiating items in legal, it builds trust and keeps legal costs under control. 2) Agree on the earnout structure and compensation before going to LOI or drafting definitive agreements. This is basic, but the intent is that the seller is a part of the creation of the construct versus a recipient. Even if there is not a lot of room for flexibility, its much better to preview and ask for input than throw over the fence and have lawyers negotiate the terms. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast.
