On many levels, Paul Simpson could be regarded as one of the best players to have pulled on an Oxford United shirt. A shrewd signing from Manchester City after United tumbled out of the First Division in 1988, 'Simmo' found his feet under the stewardship of Brian Horton and David Fogg and quickly became a huge crowd favourite. Some of his strikes are among United's greatest of all time and he recalled some fantastic stories of a wonderful friendship with Mickey Lewis. After leaving the Manor, Simmo went on to have a stellar career in the Premier League with Derby County, before going into management and international coaching.A fascinating listen! Hosted on Acast. Welcome to another episode of the Media Boat Podcast. We start with a Universal Music Group lawsuit against Believe for blatant copyright infringement of songs. Next, Brian Horton moves on from Insomniac's The Wolverine game and onto the next installment of Perfect Dark for Microsoft. Later, Netflix is ending its interactive media starting on December 1st, where only 4 titles will remain. We wrap it all up by bringing home the Bacon...the Kevin Bacon first family comedy-horror film. We also have thoughts on Olivia Rodrigo, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Only Murders in the Building and Agatha All Along. All this and more on this weeks episode of the Media Boat Podcast.

In today's Daily Fix: Insomniac's Wolverine game has lost its Creative Director, Brian Horton, as he moves from the upcoming Marvel game to take charge of Microsoft's Perfect Dark. Not much is known of the Wolverine game, aside from a teaser several years ago. The Perfect Dark reboot was announced back in 2020, but has languished in development hell until a new gameplay teaser was revealed earlier this year. Horton's previous credits include directing 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a short stint at Infinity Ward. In other news, Arkane Austin co-founder has some harsh words for Microsoft. Raphael Colantonio, now head of WolfEye Studios, was asked by PC Gamer what his thoughts were of Arkane Austin's closure. Colantonio called the move 'stupid' and the decision was likely to appease investors and stockholders. And finally, more than 50 million mods have been downloaded by Baldur's Gate 3 players. The game has been out for more than a year, but mod support wasn't added until Patch 7 on September 5th of this year. One of the more popular mods? A mod that changes undead character Withers to 'Bone Daddy.'
This week we interview and play Hatter or Lower with a true legend of the modern game, Brian Horton! As a midfielder he made over 600 appearances for Luton Town, Brighton, Hull and Port Vale, as a manager he appeared over 1,400 times on the touchline for Man City and Oxford United amongst many others! Where will he end up on our leaderboard? Music by BIG FRIDGE Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This episode we're talking Oxford United managers. At least some of them. The good, the bad and the weird. From Jim Smith to the surprisingly successful 'Committee of Board Members'. Plus, we talk Ramon Diaz's storming of the Kassam, Mark Wright's characterful managerial career, Brian Talbot's SMART targets and Brian Horton and Ian Atkins revisionism. Oh, and we're quizzing again.

On this edition of Behind The Badge we had the pleasure of speaking to the former Oxford United manager Brian Horton.'Nobby' is one of the most experienced men to ever grace the game with over 2,000 matches in professional football as a player, manager and assistant manager. He kept United in Division Two (now the Championship) against all the odds during a turbulent time off the pitch, but on it the U's were bringing through fantastic young players and selling on the likes of Paul Simpson, Mark Stein and Andy Melville for huge profits.Brian's relationship with Kevin Maxwell is well documented throughout and he recalls the day he was famously asked to succeed his good friend Mark Lawrenson as manager. We also hear about numerous other interesting parts of Brian's long career in football. The lads then bring things back to the present day by discussing whether the extending periods of added time seen at the World Cup should be brought into the domestic game. The attention then turns to the FA Cup draw before the podcast finishes with a look ahead to the first half a dozen games under Rob Edwards.

Player-managers aren't really a thing in football anymore. Back in the mid-1990s, when on the hunt for a new boss, Manchester City promoted tough-tackling midfielder Peter Reid to the dugout while he was still a member of the first team squad. With limited experience, Reid took the bull by the horns and got the Blues playing some excellent and entertaining football - until he was later replaced by Brian Horton and went on to resume his playing career elsewhere. He spoke to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney in 2011. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
"Brian who?" the tabloids screamed when Manchester City appointed the former Hull City and Oxford United manager to take charge of the team. But even in his short spell at Maine Road, Brian Horton quickly showed the critics what his footballing ideas were - he transformed the Blues into an all-out-attack unit, providing exciting performances week after week. However, a leaky defence was his undoing, and the club struggled for consistency during his reign. The Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to Horton in 2011. Paul Walsh may have only spent 18 months at Manchester City, but it left a lasting impression on his life. Speaking to the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney in 2021, he says that it was actually one of the most enjoyable spells of his entire career - and that's part of a career where he won the league and the FA Cup away from Maine Road. As part of a dynamic, free-flowing and attacking side under Brian Horton, Walsh was a forward who would regularly get fans on their feet - and he formed an impressive partnership with Uwe Rosler. Here's his interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

When in need of some midfield security in the mid-1990s - to stave off the threat of relegation - former City manager Brian Horton turned to a holding midfielder from Germany. Steffen Karl arrived on a short loan in 1994 from Borussia Dortmund, joining his fellow German Uwe Rosler at Maine Road. The loan wasn't made permanent and so Karl moved on after a handful of games - and one goal, a winner against Southampton at The Dell. In 2020, the Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to the former midfielder - his answers in the interview are translated. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. On today's IGN The Fix: Games, With the team behind Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales taking up the Wolverine mantle, many fans were concerned about the length and scope of the game. Brian Horton, creative director at Insomniac Games, took to Twitter to clarify just what tone and scale we could expect when Marvel's Wolverine hits PlayStation 5. Volition has released further details about what fans can expect from the Saints Row reboot's characters and customization options - and why we've seen so little of the classic purple color scheme so far. In an update post published to the official Saints Row website, Volition addressed a number of questions raised by the community surrounding what new characters the reboot would bring with it, what details the developer could share on how customization in the game would work, and why the trailer showed a distinct lack of Saints Row purple. Carnage is joining Fortnite's Battle Pass as part of its brand new Chapter 2, Season 8, which launches today. The addition of the Marvel villain's character skin is just one of a number of changes making their way to the Battle Royale as players set out to face a brand new threat attempting to bring about the destruction of the island. Stella has all that in your Daily Fix!
On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Insomniac Games revealed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be arriving on PS5 in 2023, and its first gameplay trailer revealed that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales will be facing off against Venom. Alongside returning voice actors Yuri Lowenthal (Peter Parker) and Nadji Jeter (Miles Morales, it was also confirmed that Candyman's Tony Todd will voice Venom. While it was just a brief glimpse, Insomniac Games also announced it is working on Marvel's Wolverine for PS5. This new game is being directed by Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales' Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, and Insomniac's goal is to "not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit." We finally got our first look at the upcoming sequel to 2018's God of War, officially titled God of War: Ragnarok, during Sony's PlayStation Showcase. Those with a keen eye may have spotted a familiar character teased in the trailer wielding a mighty hammer. It was confirmed shortly after the showcase that it was, in fact, Thor who could be seen for a brief moment in the trailer. Now, we've gotten a full-body reveal of the Norse God himself and he looks very different than many of us are used to. We've finally got another look at Metroid Dread. This gameplay overview trailer shows us how Samus' abilities work, provides us with another look at the E.M.M.I robots, and gives us a peek at some exciting new Metroid Dread gameplay. Metroid Dread will be released on Nintendo Switch on October 8, 2021. Seth has all that in your Daily Fix!

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. If you’ve gone out to listen to live music at The Colony, Fassler Hall or elsewhere and then bought a Tulsa musician’s album in the last 15 years, there’s a good chance it’s a Horton Records release. Brian Horton, founder of Horton Records is my guest on this episode. Horton discusses the history of his nonprofit record label and how he’d maybe done things differently after all he’s learned since he started the label around 2005. He also talks about the good and bad of coining the term “New Tulsa Sound,” which has stuck since he released a compilation of Tulsa musicians in 2010. In this conversation recorded over Zoom on February 8th, Horton discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted bands and live music, plus he talks about the current trends in music, including the comeback of cassette tapes. Despite the pandemic slowing down shows, Horton Records continues to release new music, including Back to Paradise a Tulsa tribute to Okie music, which dropped in August. On the album 20 Tulsa musicians pay tribute to Oklahoma artists from the past. Recorded at Leon Russell’s former Paradise Studio. They knocked out 17 songs in 4 days. We close this episode with Jesse Aycock’s cover of Gypsy Trips’ Rock n Roll Gypsies. More on that later. It should be noted this isn’t Horton’s full time job. Just his passion project/side hustle to help keep Tulsa’s music scene alive and thriving. I had a great time chatting about Tulsa music with Brian Horton. His hard work has helped provide many nights of entertainment for me over the years. There are few things better than enjoying a Sunday night jam session with Paul Benjaman and his friends at the Colony. I feel like this was just the beginning of our chats about music. OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Brian Horton. We’re closing this episode with Jesse Aycock’s cover of Rock N Roll Gypsies, which is a part of the Horton Records compilation Back to Paradise: A Tulsa Tribute to Okie Music. Here is what fellow musician Cody Clinton had to say about Jesse Aycock: Jesse Aycock is one of the people that made this place a music town again. Not city developers. Not music museums. Not restaurant owners. This dude. I couldn’t say it better myself. Here is Jesse Aycock and friends with Rock N Roll Gypsies.
Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. On the first day of January, YWCA Tulsa CEO Julie Davis stood at the podium of the Centennial Year Launch program for the upcoming 100th commemoration of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She was there to announce the launch of the nonprofit organization’s Tulsa Triumphs initiative, which is a commitment to eliminate racism through pledges to do things like shop local Black businesses or learn more about our city’s past. The mission of eliminating racism is one of the YWCA’s main goals as a nonprofit organization. Julie joins me on this episode to talk about Tulsa Triumphs and about the tangible ways she and her staff are investing in the Black community as part of their pledge. She also talks about the other ways the nonprofit are working to empower women and help our community flourish. She joined YWCA as CEO in 2017 and leads an organization that started locally in 1914. Seven years later, after one of the worst race massacres in U.S. history occurred, the YWCA opened a center in north Tulsa to provide shelter, hot meals and job training for young Black women who were forced into homeless after at least 35 city blocks were burned to the ground. A decade later they helped women and their families during the Great Depression. They have also focused on helping immigrants who arrive in Tulsa looking for a new start in a new land of opportunity by providing citizenship services, legal services and education like English language classes. Today, that includes the program Flourish Tulsa, which is a partnership between YWCA, TCC, Workforce Tulsa and the City of Tulsa. We feature an article about the program in our February issue and Julie discussed it and more in this zoom conversation recorded in late January.Julie’s a native of Missouri but has called Tulsa home since attending TU for her masters. We talk about her time in Tulsa and why she’s devoted her career to working for nonprofits, and how being a mom of two girls impacts her work. I had a great time getting to know Julie and learning more about her and the important work the YWCA is doing in Tulsa. You can learn more about all their programs, including in health and wellness at YWCATulsa.org. Following that conversation, a new song from Saugeye, which just released their debut album. More on that later. OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Julie Davis. Saugeye is a Tulsa band named after avid fisherman and band frontman Jared Tyler’s favorite catch, a hybrid blend of the walleye and sauger. The band members describe their sound as hybrid roots music, and you can hear it here with the single “Keystone Lillie.” On January 29th, Horton Records celebrated the release of Saugeye’s self-titled debut, which is now available at HortonRecords.BandCamp.Com. Sidenote, Brian Horton will be our guest on the next episode of Tulsa Talks. Here is Saugeye’s “Keystone Lillie.”

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. It wasn’t that long ago that Tulsa and Oklahoma were living in the dark ages. It was a time when we were a land of 3.2 Bud heavies and Bud Lights, so people had to travel long distances to get certain strong beers. Some may have even died from dysentery on the trail. The year was 2007. It was then Eric Marshall, my guest on this episode, returned to his hometown after studying the art of brewing in Munich, Germany. There he was awarded the prestigious International Diploma in Brewing Technology from the World Brewing Academy. Within a year Marshall Brewing Company became Tulsa’s first production craft microbrewery. It was the dawn of a new age in Tulsa. As Marshall six packs of Sundown Wheat flew off the liquor store shelves and McNellie's Pub Ale flowed out of McNellie's taps, other Tulsans began brewing their own beers and launching their own companies. Soon beer options were all over the spectrum from super hoppy to sour beers featuring artistic labels. In less than a decade a brewery district had formed just east of downtown and to the west of the Marshall Brewery located on 6th St about midway between Utica and Lewis. In this conversation, Eric looks back at those early days of brewing and the revolution his company started in Tulsa. He also talks about how his work went beyond the brewery and to help modernize Oklahoma’s alcohol laws. When voters approved State Question 792 in Nov. 2016, it opened the doors to taprooms statewide and created the opportunity for brewers to enter grocery store distribution without reducing the alcohol content of their beers. Eric is a proud Tulsan, who graduated from the University of Tulsa. We discuss how much has changed for the better in Tulsa in this phone conversation that occurred on the first day of Fall. We start this conversation with how things have been going since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Tulsa. Following that conversation, Voice digital editor and music writer Kyra Bruce shares the song “Spit (You Out)” by Rainbeaux. More on that later. Ok let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Eric Marshall.
