Listen Frontier: One group thinks open primary elections in Oklahoma could boost voter turnout

A group is seeking to boost voter participation in Oklahoma by opening primary elections to all voters, regardless of political party. State-level races are often decided in Republican primaries in Oklahoma, because there are no Independent or Democratic candidates on the ballot, leaving many voters locked out. “Voters are showing up with nothing to vote for and all the meaningful decisions are happening in the primary.” said Jeremy Gruber, an organizer for the group Oklahoma United. “That's why everyone needs a chance to participate.”The change would come through Oklahoma's Initiative Petition process. Gruber said if signature collection goes well, the group hopes to get the measure on the ballot as a State Question in 2026, when Oklahoma will be selecting a new governor.Independents are the fastest growing voter demographic in the state, according to the Oklahoma State Election Board. There are 481,817 Independent voters registered in the state, a 32.4% increase since 2020. Meanwhile, Democrat voter registration declined by 12.2% during the same period. Republican voter registration has increased 13.1% in Oklahoma since 2020. Oklahoma currently allows political parties to hold closed primary elections. In recent years, the Oklahoma Democratic Party has allowed independents to vote in primaries, but the Republican and Libertarian parties have continued to hold closed primaries. Gruber said there are multiple systems of open primaries in use across the country, but the version the group hopes Oklahomans will soon see on a ballot mimics municipal elections most are already familiar with.“Many of those municipalities across the state, which are arguably some of our more functional forms of government, use a unified primary,” former State Sen. AJ Griffin, who supports open primaries, said.“Voter participation is a sign of a healthy democracy,” Griffin said. “This isn't a partisan issue … but it is a way to engage all of the voters in the process and increase civic participation in a state with one of the highest ratings for election integrity in the country.Gruber said every state that has enacted an open primary system has seen voter turnout increase.“It's not hard to understand why,” he said. “You let more voters vote, you get higher voter turnout. It's basic math.” Only 64% of Oklahoma voters participated in this year's 2024 general election. The Republican mayors of both Oklahoma City and Tulsa favor the switch. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt said in September that he hopes a statewide open primary system would wipe out some of Oklahoma's partisan divide.“People say ‘Gosh it sure seems like you're electing mayors that unify people, that seem competent, that are well-liked across the political spectrum,” Holt said. “It's not magic … every voter gets to see all the candidates, and all the candidates have to face all of the voters.” Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum told The Tulsa World earlier this year that he now supports open primaries, after he campaigned against them as a city councilor more than a decade ago.“I think it is important to point out, there is a Republican dominance right now (in Oklahoma), but we have had for a longer period...

After Oklahoma voters decisively passed State Question 802 in 2020, mandating expansion of Oklahoma's Medicaid coverage to low-income citizens similar to the Affordable Care Act, Governor Kevin Stitt has worked to privatize the joint federal and state run healthcare program. As SoonerCare transitions to SoonerSelect, on April 1, 2024, the program will be operated by three private companies; Aetna Better Health of Oklahoma, Humana Healthy Horizons, and Oklahoma Complete Health. As of March 10th, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, or OCHA, began auto-assigning members who had not selected their new plans. Shonda Little speaks with Jared Deck, State Representative for House District 44 in Norman and JeKia Harrison, President of the Young Democrats of Oklahoma, and a lifelong resident of northeast Oklahoma City to learn more about this transition and the concerns held by some about this change. In a groundbreaking achievement Traci Manuel, who both attended and taught at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, has etched her name into Oklahoma history books, becoming the first African American educator to claim the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year. Anthony Cherry speaks with her and Milton Dean III. Dean has been in education for 16 years with Tulsa Public Schools. He currently serves at Street School, a nonprofit, alternative, therapeutic based school. Before that he spent four years at the Juvenile Detention Center, also known as the Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice to share more about Manuel's remarkable journey, from her teaching career to her statewide advocacy for a more inclusive and effective education system. Rebecca Marks Jimerson, the Commemorative Chair and Special Projects Chair of the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Society, has a decade-long commitment to honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. Recently in Tulsa Jimerson produced a powerful partnership with the Jewish Federation of Tulsa, Circle Cinema, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, and the National Association of Black Journalists which shed light on the intertwined histories of Black people and Jewish people through a documentary entitled Shared Legacies: The African American-Jewish Civil Rights Alliance, directed by Jewish filmmaker, Dr. Shari Rogers of Detroit. Through her film she provides verbal accounts of how Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement were able to move forward with some of this momentum helped by support of allies of the interfaith community even coming together with Dr. King in the marches for equality. This included footage of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and other rabbis who were seen close to the front of several marches with Dr. King. This collaboration serves as a call to contemporary social justice movements to unite and continue Dr. King's vision of equality. Francia Allen attended the screening and speaks with Jimerson, Brae Riley, a board member and Chair of the Social Justice Sub-Committee of the Jewish Federation of Tulsa, and Ryan Thomas, the lead film programmer at Circle Cinema to expand on this powerful cooperation. How's it growing folks?! Welcome again to Here Weed Go! Today I'm honing in on the latest advertising developments for cannabis in the digital world, specifically Twitter's new policy of allowing some marijuana and hemp company's products to be featured on its platform. It's a big change for Twitter, which since Elon Musk's take-over late last year, has been hemorrhaging advertisers. It's also a big change for social media as a whole, and something Meta, Google and other large tech companies with significant online real-estate are almost assuredly following closely. To help make sense of what might have been behind the change in policy, why there seems to be such a slow move to allow marijuana and hemp companies to advertise online, and why my accounts are shadow banned on some platforms, I brought on attorney Clark Wu, a senior attorney with Phoenix-based law firm Bianchi & Brandt. But before I jump into the deep end of online ads, I want to update you all on the developments in Oklahoma, where unfortunately, voters choose to forgo a state-licensed, adult-use recreational program three weeks ago, at least for the time being. To help get a better understanding of why State Question 820 was defeated, and what it means for both the state's robust medical program and the future prospects of a potential recreational program, I spoke with Anna Codutti, editor for the Tulsa World. Since the legalization of Medical Marijuana in Oklahoma with State Question 788- criminals have flocked to the state to set up illegal grow houses because of cheap permits, cheap land and lax rules allowing them to get into the business of growing marijuana in Oklahoma. Ron Hays talks with Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward about how these enterprises have invaded Oklahoma- the magnitude of the current problem and how the state is pushing back on thousands of bad people who have set up shop in the state- with the hope to reduce the number of these operations dramatically in the days to come. It's a huge problem all across rural Oklahoma but Woodward believes progress is being made to reign in these illegal marijuana farms.

A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Pope Francis met Wednesday with two young Nigerian girls who suffered horrendous violence at the hands of the Boko Haram terrorist group. Sixteen-year-old Maryamu Joseph, who escaped from the Boko Haram in July after being held against her will for nine years, greeted the pope with Janada Marcus, also a victim of Boko Haram kidnapping, at the end of his general audience on March 8. Both girls saw members of their families murdered by Boko Haram. The pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need arranged for the girls to meet the pope on International Women's Day. Pope Francis recently wrote a book preface in which he condemned violence against women. “We must find the cure to heal this plague and not leave women alone,” the pope said. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253817/pope-francis-meets-with-two-nigerian-girls-who-were-kidnapped-by-boko-haram Oklahomans on Tuesday night overwhelmingly voted down a measure that would have legalized recreational marijuana, which the Catholic bishops of the state had urged voters to reject because of the physical and spiritual harms of drug use. State Question 820, which would have legalized the consumption of marijuana for adults 21 and over, was put before Oklahoma voters in a special election March 7. The final tally was 62% no to 38.3% yes, with a turnout of about 25% of registered voters, the Associated Press reported. The vote continues a recent trend of conservative-led states rejecting marijuana ballot measures, despite analyst predictions that marijuana legalization has, for the past decade or so, largely been a winning issue no matter what state it is introduced in. At the midterm elections in November 2022, voters in Arkansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota rejected measures put before them to legalize recreational pot while Missouri and Maryland approved theirs. Catholic bishops in all of those states had urged voters to reject marijuana legalization. The Catholic Conference of Oklahoma, representing Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City and Bishop David Konderla of Tulsa, strongly urged voters to reject the measure, citing the well-documented harms to society, children, and the family associated with the proliferation of marijuana. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253821/oklahoma-voters-reject-marijuana-legalization Today, the Church celebrates Saint Frances of Rome, who from an early age felt called to religious life, but was forced into marriage at age thirteen. Despite her situation, Frances gave up all her wealth to the sick and poor, and began to go door to door raising money to aid the sick and poor. She eventually founded a charitable society of women to continue her work. She is the patron of widows and motorists, because according to legend, an angel always lit her path. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-frances-of-rome-415

How's it growing folks?! In today's episode, I'm taking a deep toke on the cannabis-only special election in Oklahoma on March 7, 2023. For those not in the know about the Sooner State, here's a little background: Although you probably wouldn't guess it, Oklahoma is home to the most dispensaries per capita of any state. And it's not even close. Known as the "Wild West of Weed," by some estimates, there are more dispensaries currently operating in the state then there are gas stations. That's a lot for a state with just a medical program. And although nearly 10% of Oklahomans hold a medical card, that's only about 350,000 patients. As you might be able to tell, that's a lot of store fronts and cannabis product for a relative few patients. As a result, a lot of that pot has found its way into the underground black market in-state and elsewhere. That's what gives Oklahoma it's other cannabis-derived nickname: "The Black Market Capitol of Marijuana." Now, after a back-and-forth with the courts and state government, State Question 820, which would implement an adult-use recreational program in the state, is up for a state-wide special election on March 7. To help get a better perspective of what's going on on the ground out there, I've brought on two guests, Anna Codutti, a journalist with the Tulsa World, and dispensary operator Arshad Lasi of the Nirvana Group. We touch on why State Question 820 is on it's own special election ballot, what state politicians and medical industry stakeholders are saying about the initiative, and how likely voters are to pass a measure that would make Oklahoma the 22nd state to legalize recreational marijuana. This week on The Lost Ogle Show, Ryan Kiesel schooled us on State Question 807 and criminal justice reform. Ryan also talked about the good work that the tax rates for 807 could do for schools and county governments. We also talked about everything from criminal justice reform to whether or not teachers should sleep with 18-year-old students. Also, Patrick tried to start Infinite Jest, and like everyone else, didn't make it very far. Published 31 January 2020 Do some business with our sponsors!
