What is wellness and who is it for? Outside of the colorful healthy smoothies and Lululemon branded yoga classes we see on our Instagram feeds, what does wellness really mean in 2020? Maryam Ajayi has a lot to teach us about the wellness world and its blind spots when it comes to racial diversity and inclusion. She argues that the world and industry of wellness has a long way to go until it prioritizes the health and wellness of all people. In this candid conversation she shares her personal journey from Republican lobbyist to wellness practitioner. She also outlines her vision of a more equitable and healthy world, and shares how we can get there, one breath at a time. Growing up in a politically conservative house hold she was drawn to a career in Washington DC where she worked in republican lobbying. Maryam talks about her work and even spilled some tea about partying in capital hill and even crushing on John Boehner. But after politics took a toll on her she transitioned to tech. It wasn’t long before her true calling started drawing her away from the corporate world. She found herself studying reiki and breath work, and being the business woman she is found away to bring both her worlds together. She founded Dive In Well, and organization that is working to make the wellness industry more inclusive. Maryam is truly using her powers for change! Produced by Dear Media

It’s my honor to share this conversation with entrepreneur, reiki practitioner, activist and breathwork teacher Maryam Ajayi. Maryam is the founder of DiveInWell, an organization dedicated to fostering diversity in the wellness industry by bringing together thought leaders, influencers, and educators who have the power to create deep change through examining how they can show up in their business in terms of accessibility and inclusion. Her company began its legacy by hosting salons and events that foster the open and difficult conversations that must be shared around inclusion and allyship both publicly in the health and wellness world, and privately in our personal lives and circles. DiveInWell has completely rebranded in 2020 and is committed to providing not only massively valuable educational resources, but events, workshops, free swims and so much more. Maryam gives us all the juicy details in the pod as she shares her story, but here’s a quick sparknotes version: when her aspirations of becoming a young, Black, female Republican lobbyist stopped resonating, Maryam uprooted her life and moved from D.C. to NYC. One day, the universe truly had her back when she decided to splurge on a massage in hopes it would relieve her chronic pain. Little did she know, that seemingly innocent decision would completely change her life forever. Maryam Ajayi is a healer and an advocate for inclusivity in the Wellness space. With a background in political lobbying, in the midst of her career she felt the calling to support humanity in a very different way - by returning to the roots of healing. Her work is honorable, her voice strong, her presence empowering, making her a true leader for us all. And how does one suddenly feel the need to change careers - or pivot as they say - so unexpectedly? Having been in that position myself I can tell you, once you know - you know. I used to believe (even though I fought it every day) that I had to “choose” who I wanted to be and that I was to stick with that for the rest of my days… It all began in childhood… “so what do you want to be when you grow up?” I remember having at least 10 desires at a time: I wanted to be a chef, a ballerina, an astronaut, a teacher, a painter, and sometimes a mom. “Well no but which one?' They'd ask.. “you have to choose ONE”. By the time I was headed to college nothing entertained me, I didn't know what I wanted to be, but I sure knew what I didn't want. Lucky for me I discovered Art - a field of study where at least I felt I could be free. Throughout life I navigated this path in many of it's iterations: as an illustrator, a retoucher, a graphic designer and finally as a fashion creative. As I got better and better I climbed that ladder, never feeling completely fulfilled, and one day the universe kicked back. As I hit a wall and picked myself up, piece by piece I had to put myself together and in doing so - as Maryam did - set off to help others as well. If and when you feel your calling, pay attention, that time means NOW. Always trust your intuition, listen to that voice within, the one you could clearly hear as a child… It's still the same, and it was always right. When most people think of healers in wellness, they probably imagine a brunette white women, with a minimalist aesthetic and well-curated brand identity — an industry standard for success. As a dynamic healer of color, who practices Reiki and Breathwork, but also works in Tech and admits to drinking champagne and indulging in tacos, Maryam doesn't fit that image. Despite the discrepancy between her identity and that of the majority of healers in this space, she still knew that she belonged in the healing world and became determined to find her own place in it. In this episode, Maryam and I chat about spiritual awakenings, reiki, breathwork, unblocking white fragility, white privilege, conscious capitalism, and that wellness should be accessible to all.
