It's the almost last new podcast of 2024 - and it's packed once again with the the hottest topics generating headlines in New West and beyond. Tune in to hear a number of great topics discussed including the recent announcement that Council has a approved a notional 7.6% property tax hike in 2025. What does that translate into for average homeowners and small business operators? More than you think! Next up is a discussion about the proposed 7th Street bike lane which if approved will remove lots of street parking, switch part of the road to one-way and add in a new dedicated bike lane. A recent public meeting at the library drew a very large and active crowd of residents who for the most part were not impressed with the proposal. Is it a done deal? What would a podcast be without another discussion on the new dedicated bike lanes on East Columbia which is causing major traffic headaches and triggering complaints from local residents - many of them seniors. Can anything be done to fix this 'problem' which many locals indicate was an unnecessary investment in the wrong location? The next Councillor Cafe downtown edition has been scheduled for January 30th at the Holy Trinity Cathedral - Parish Hall - from 7-9 pm. It looks like a lot of residents concerned about the Columbia Square redevelopment project are planning on being there. So too are downtown residents concerned about public toilets being installed in front of their residences. No advance registration is required, but come early as the seating is limited and Coun. Paul Minhas is predicting a packed house!Speaking of the Columbia Square redevelopment, that petition has over 1000 signatures on it now! What will Council do when all those names are submitted to them asking for a reconsideration of their decision to approve the massive new development at 88 10th Street?Another petition is now over 1100 signatures! That one pertains to a request for safety upgrades at 2nd Street and 6th Ave. Parent organizer Lyndsay Cotterall appeared on the Mike Smyth Show on CKNW to discuss. Did popular CKNW host Jody Vance just call the For the Record podcast 'cool' to all her listeners? Way to go Jody! Why did the Province of BC announce a major review of EComm 911, but have been silent on the wasteful spending and mismanagement at Metro Vancouver. What's up with that? A motion to limit the overall number and location of vape shops got unanimous approval from Council. A special letter of support came in only hours before the debate, you might be surprised to learn where it came from! All that and much more this week on For the Record which is available on Spotify, Apple Podcast and all major platforms.

But participation goes far beyond voting—it's a powerful tool for reclaiming rights, restoring land, and ensuring justice for communities that have long been left out of decision-making. Which is why we're looking at participation through an Indigenous perspective. Indigenous knowledge systems can inform and inspire broader movements for justice and democratic participation. Guest: Dr. PennElys Droz is the Power Building and Curriculum Coordinator with NDN Collective, an Indigenous-led advocacy organization. Key Topics: The founding of the U.S. Democratic system, which was built on Indigenous ideas from the Haudenosaunee (The Six Nations People) How the complex relationship between indigenous communities and the U.S. Democratic system impacts participation in environmental justice and beyond Voting rights and ongoing challenges to achieving a truly representative government The LandBack movement as participatory justice Solidarity with the Palestinian liberation movement Indigenous Economies in contrast to colonial, capitalist, and extractive economies — like the petrochemical (plastic) industry. Without proactively removing the structures and systems that have contributed to inequity, place-based collaboratives can not make a meaningful impact on the lives of those most excluded and underestimated in communities. However, given the increasing anti-DEI political and cultural headwinds unfolding in the US and several other countries, communities are facing increased challenges pursuing their equity work.To explore this topic, we share an audio recording from the Day 3 opening panel discussion at the 2024 Collective Impact Action Summit. At some point in a lifter's career, typically after the novice or early intermediate phase, the most reliable way to get stronger is to become more muscular, i.e. build muscle mass. To that end, the term "powerbuilding" has emerged to describe a hybrid approach of training the main barbell lifts (like a powerlifter) alongside a selection of supplemental lifts done for higher reps aimed at increasing muscular size (like a bodybuilder). While some people knock powerbuilding as a merely a clever marketing term, but a suboptimal way to train, the fact is that many of the strongest powerlifters of all time have trained with this approach: Ed Coan, Dan Green, Kirk Karwoski, and many others. In today's episode, Andy lays out his "KSC Method for Powerbuilding" using an 8/5/2 scheme for progressing the main lifts in the context of a five day body part split. In this installment of the Best of Muscle For Life, you'll hear hand-picked clips from three popular MFL episodes: an interview with Kyle Hunt on “powerbuilding” for getting bigger and stronger, a monologue on beating food cravings, and a book club episode with my top takeaways from Peak Performance. Some people—my favorite people—listen to most or even all of my podcasts, but my wizbang analytics tell me that while many listeners tune in on a regular basis, they don't catch every installment of Muscle for Life and thus miss out on insights that could help them do at least a little better inside and outside the gym. That's why I do “best of” episodes that contain a few of the most practical and compelling ideas, tips, and moments from the more popular episodes I've published over the years. This way, you can learn interesting insights that you might have otherwise missed and find new episodes of the show to listen to. So, in this installment of The Best of Muscle for Life, you'll be hearing hand-picked morsels from three episodes: Kyle Hunt on Using “Powerbuilding” to Get Bigger and Stronger (Originally published 6/29/2020) How to Beat Food Cravings and Stick to Your Diet (Originally published 7/1/2020) Book Club: Peak Performance by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness (Originally published 9/29/2017) And we'll be starting with number one, Kyle Hunt on Using “Powerbuilding” to Get Bigger and Stronger.
