In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I respond to a great question from Vicky in Canada about the language we use with children, particularly the phrases "good choice" or "bad choice." Vicky expressed concerns about hearing these terms frequently, especially in daycare settings, and wanted to know how this fits (or doesn't) within the child-centered play therapy (CCPT) model. I explain why labeling choices as "good" or "bad" places a judgment on the child's actions, shifting the focus away from the child's ownership and empowerment. I explain that the key principle in CCPT is to keep choices neutral and factual, allowing the child to fully own their decisions and outcomes. Using evaluative language undermines a child's ability to understand their own agency and responsibility for their actions. Instead of labeling choices, we should offer children the opportunity to make decisions without judgment, fostering independence and internal motivation. "From what I've been through, from what I've seen, I never thought I'd be in this position where I'm at right now." 2x Super Bowl Champ L'Jarius Sneed As we continue to make our way through NFL Training camps, we are nearing the end of the tour which means Football season is around the corner and we are sitting with star players from around the league getting inside scoop, hearing never-told-before stories and going inside the locker room mentality of the 32 teams as they prepare for the 2024 season. Tennessee made big moves this offseason by revamping their secondary, acquiring two-time Super Bowl champion L'Jarius Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs who is embracing his new role with the Titans as the cornerstone of the team's defense. During our Pivot training camp visit, Ryan, Fred, and Channing were eager to sit down with the new Titan, not just for what he's accomplished on the field but the odds he's beat off the field to be where he is today. On this episode of the Pivot Podcast in partnership with Fanatics, the guys listen and learn more about the man behind the champion and how L'Jarius' path to the NFL was anything but easy. In an emotional conversation, Sneed reveals the motivation behind his gritty play, his relationship with his parents, near death experiences, the loss of his brother and how his life has transformed since his championship run in Kansas city and even more so after signing a four-year, $76.4 million deal this offseason. Never did Sneed believe as a young boy born in jail, with both his parents in and out of incarceration through his childhood, that he could go onto achieve the highest of dreams playing the game he loves and eventually changing his entire family generation and dynamic. Through loss and heartbreak, Sneed has developed a certain on-field instinct that makes him one of the most dynamic players in the game and through forgiveness, he's learned to appreciate the great moments and fulfill a promise to always take care of his mama. Switching gears to the Xs and Os, Sneed was sad to leave his Chiefs teammates behind on an often underrated defense but looks forward to this fresh start with the Titans and isn't letting up on the gas after his back to back Super Bowl wins, he feels he is just getting started. The guys ask him about his shut down plays that have made him one of the best while Sneed gets honest about the Chiefs trade, the fiery competition between him and Ja'Marr Chase, Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, the Zay Flowers play that sent his Chiefs team to the Super Bowl and even sharers his thoughts on the Taylor Swift takeover. While Sneed may be a man of few words in the locker room, he leads through example and allows his play on the field to talk for him. Today on the show I speak my good friend and now ex-midwife Norafiah Lever. Norafiah is a picture of integrity and vibrancy. She used to tell me every year that she questioned herself each time she went to renew her registration. Could she still continue to work in the system that was so egregious to women. Despite working with the guidelines of private practice, the reporting to AHPRA by other professionals took its toll, and she finally de-registered herself voluntarily. She does not believe as a midwife that you can truly ‘be with woman' when theres a conflict of allegiance. Norafiah and I have such a good time on this podcast, having so many laughs and getting all passionate - talking about birth, women's rights and of course spirituality.

In this episode, we look at the ritual of saying goodbye and good riddance to the old year to bring in the new one. Does this type of send-off serve us well?
My wife had gotten a really nice wedding gift for our friend. This beautiful little serving dish and some cut glass and some silver. One of those things people get only at their wedding, usually. Well, here's the problem. The girl had been married for four years, and four years later, well, we found the present. Yeah, we put it behind a chair to get it out of the way one day, and we found it four years later. We had planned to have our daughter take it to the wedding for us. Well, we totally missed the time that you should give a gift like that. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Saying Good Things - While They Can Hear Them!" Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Ephesians 4:29. It's excellent advice for improving and nurturing the relationships in your life. Here are God's words, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is useful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Now God says the only words you ought to be speaking to people are those that will build them up. Give those people around you build-up encouragement, give them compliments and thank yous, and affirmations - the kind of things we usually say at their funeral. I remember when my dad died and I stood by that casket - and some wonderful, wonderful things were said about him. All these people had wonderful praise for the kind of man my dad had been. Unfortunately, my dad couldn't hear any of them. I remember when I went to the memorial service for a sixteen-year-old young man who had been killed by a hit-and-run driver, and these big old football players who'd been on the team with him went to the microphone one after the other and they just... well, they tearfully told what a great friend he had been. And they praised him for a lot of great qualities. I could only hope that they had said those things when he could hear them. Why don't we give people their flowers when they can still smell them? Your family, your friends, your spiritual leaders, your spiritual helpers? They need encouragement today and you have the power to give that powerful gift. Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." You see, we can give people life sentences, because the tongue has the power of life. We can give them death sentences; things that make them feel more alive like compliments, praise, encouragement, or things that make them feel like they're dying inside like put-downs and criticism. How are you doing giving those life sentences each day to the people in your world? Too often we make the same mistake that my wife and I made with the gift for that young bride; we waited too long to give the gift. Some of us have people who are gone now that we wish we could have back for like ten minutes just so we could tell them we love them, give them our appreciation. But we can't have them back. What we can do is determine that the people who are still here will hear our love, hear our encouragement, hear our apology or our forgiveness. They'll hear our praise, often! They need your gift right now. We never know how long someone will be here for us to give those emotional gifts; those gifts that could mean so much. The days are flying by and I'll bet there is someone whose gift, maybe, has been sitting on the shelf. Give them your love, now! Don't wait for the funeral to say what's in your heart right now.

Pastor Phelps brings a message on the importance of coming to the end of life with confidence. Originally preached on Sunday evening May 1, 2022.
This episode dives into some topics based off of what I have seen, heard, and read lately. The episodes talks about the importance of how we say good bye to our students at the end of the day, the importance of school culture and different components that we should be paying attention to, and the importance of making apologies.

Your child has climbed to the top of the slide, what do you say when they look down at you? Are you on auto-pilot (like many of us) and shout out the blanket phrase "good job"? Many of us do this! We get caught in the "good job" cycle and continuously praise our children with this phrase that doesn't really provide our children with the right information. When we yell out these blanket phrases like "good job", "awesome", "you're so smart", "so pretty" we are guiding our children to feelings of extrinsic motivation. This is showing them that the way others view them is more important than how they feel inside, or their intrinsic motivation. We want to curb this habit so that our children can focus on the details of what we are noticing. We want to acknowledge, not praise, and to do this we focus on describing what we see. So when your child does climb to the top of the slide you can say something like: "you made it to the top" or " I see you up there" or "wow thats really high up there". Instead you are describing what you see or asking questions, so that the child can focus on what they did and not be so wrapped up in the praise and the need for validation in everything they do. We want children to feel good, but with the right type of words, so that they can process and internalize the words and begin to feel good inside about the accomplishments they have made! Here are some things you can try out instead of good job (excerpt from the book recommendation below):Look at you. That's a tall ____ you created. You worked hard on solving that problem.Wow, that looks tricky. You are trying to build a _______ and it's not easy. How did you do that? You did it!You know how to do it.You're wearing a fancy dress. You put all the _____ in a row. Be patient with yourselves parents, this is a hard thing to get over, but I know you can do it!Book Recommendations: It's OK not to share...and other renegade rules for raising competent and compassionate kids. by Heather Shumaker LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! Activity for Later: Obstacle course! Set up different obstacles for your child inside or outside; pillows on the floor, areas to jump in, tunnels, crawling, balancing things, walking on a line, etc.. Practice giving them details, rather than blanket praise. Children are working on increasing their confidence levels and physical abilities and you are working on changing the "good job" cycle, another win, win!
