But in his funny, insightful, humble, yet powerful manual that helps men transcend the roles, ego, habits, and relationship boxes that they find themselves stuck in, Scott brings solid wisdom that gently nudges his readers to a more conscious conception of what it is to be a successful, purpose-driven, loving and happy man today. In Mindful Masculinity: A Book for Men and the Women Who Love Them, he strips away the misconceptions, embedded beliefs and behaviors that no longer serve, using his hilarious self-deprecating humor to show where he went wrong, and brings to light the new way that attracts people rather than dominates or drives them away—and embellishes one's authenticity. “If Dave Chappelle and Eckart Tolle teamed up to write a book for men, this would be it!” lauds Deborah Poneman, creator of the globally renowned Yes to Success Seminars. Scott Grace's gifts are many—a highly sought-after singer, speaker, workshop leader, life coach and stand-up comedian (who used to open for such legends as Robin Williams and Dana Carvey), he rose to prominence opening for rock star authors and personal growth celebrities. The short list consisted of Deepak Chopra, Dr. John Gray, Louise Hay, Ram Dass, Dr. Bernie Siegel, Byron Katie, Jack Canfield, Joan Borysenko, Mark Victor Hansen, Les Brown, Dr. Judith Orloff, Alan Cohen, Wally Famous Amos and others -- including three presidential candidates, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dennis Kucinich, and Marianne Williamson. Thanks to a succession of viral YouTubes, he went on to star as The Spiritual Dr. Seuss, combining entertainment, wisdom and comedy. As the new Dr. Seuss for adults, Scott became the headliner at New Thought Churches around the world, adding his unique gift of performing his uplifting and highly entertaining songs, including many written on the spot. He then parlayed that talent into the corporate sector as The Boardroom Bard, and eventually, developed another career writing spot-on personalized songs to honor people on their birthdays, anniversaries and eulogies, etc. Somewhere in there, he found the time to pen four books, Mindful Masculinity being the most recent. Scott's book tackles overcoming the innate driving desire to live up to dad's or one's own expectations, the addiction to NOT feeling, transforming the inner critic, becoming aware of the fear of fear, transcending the compulsion to fix things for a romantic partner, grieving lost ideals and painful experiences, releasing the hold the ego has over heart, letting go of anger and rage self-or-other-inflicted, and much more. Mindful Masculinity is broken into 50+ clever fun-to-read short takes on subjects that shape a man's life and the partner he shares it with. Says Scott: “This book is my love letter to men wanting to be true to themselves, confused about the changing rules and roles of masculinity. It's a love letter to women who want to know more about the challenges men face. Finally, it's a call to action to take charge of your growth so you can make a positive impact on the world with your masculinity.” Mindful Masculinity is available on Amazon.com for $16.95 and on Kindle for $3.99 Rather listen? Why are empaths more susceptible to experiencing trauma than most? Are you a sensitive person? Are you an empath with a more sensitive and perceptive system? What is happening is that our nervous system is more sensitive, receiving information that others don't, feeling things that others don't, which means having an uncontrollable body response to imperceptible changes in the environment. Like being in a noisy crowd and not able to turn it off, our sensitivity can lead to overwhelm. Which leads to the hard truth, while being sensitive may be a superpower sometimes, it more often than not is overwhelming for our system and causes a trauma response in our body. Pretty soon we can be having emotional meltdowns, or physical health symptoms that are embarrassing or ones that we think are random. In this episode, I chat with Dr. Judith Orloff to explore the ways in which this can lead to a greater susceptibility to trauma, as well as how to embrace the unique gifts that heightened sensitivity brings. Dr. Orloff is a UCLA trained psychiatrist and has been called “the godmother of the empath movement”. She synthesizes traditional medicine with cutting-edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality, and believes in the power of integrating this wisdom. In this episode, you'll learn: Why highly sensitive people are more prone to trauma The different types of overwhelming situations an empath might encounter The hidden needs of empaths Why empaths are more vulnerable to physical health symptoms How this level of sensitivity can actually be a superpower Practical strategies for empaths, like sensory inventories and boundary setting, to not just survive but thrive For more information and show notes, please visit our website: https://biologyoftrauma.com/biology-of-trauma-podcast/

Are you feeling burned out by the dating process or struggling to show up in your relationships? In this episode, I talk with Rebecca Marcus, LCSW about going at your own pace and: • Caring for yourself when starting new relationships just as you would in every other part of your life • Not comparing yourself to others when dating and choosing the right pace for you • Slowing down to process and reflect throughout the dating process to understand how you feel about the other person • The importance of honoring and speaking your needs with the other people in your life, even if they're also highly sensitive Rebecca is a social worker in NYC who helps Millennial women chill out, get confident, and trust themselves and their dating process, so they can find and keep the love they want. Growing up on Disney movies, rom coms, and fairy tales about Prince Charming that showed unrealistic expectations of relationships, dating, and love only led to chaos and confusion when she started dating. So for a decade, she's helped millennial women navigate the confusing NYC dating scene, break toxic patterns, and create relationships and a life filled with meaning and joy. Judith Orloff, UCLA clinical psychiatrist and author of The Genius of Empathy: Practical Skills to Heal Your Sensitive Self, Your Relationships, and the World, explains that empathy is what connects us. It’s the ability to care, to listen, and to open our hearts. The practice of empathy, Orloff says, is a simple yet “precious gift” and that displaying empathy is the “best of who we are.” Orloff also says being empathetic is “a way we can save our world because empathy is the key element in reaching out to people, even if you disagree with them, even if you don't like them, it allows you to establish accord with them.” In addition, Orloff says, “when you're open to empathy, all kinds of good things can happen to your body. There's something called the Mother Teresa effect, where it's been shown that if you witness an act of empathy, and I were to draw your blood, it would show that your immunity would go up immediately. And what that says to me is that just alone, watching empathy can increase our immunity and make us healthier.” Zachary Wallmark, an associate professor of musicology and with the Center for Translational Neuroscience at the University of Oregon, talks about his research on the intersection of music and empathy. Wallmark has observed, through magnetic imagining, how listening to music relates to social cognition and empathy. “Empathy,” Wallmark says, “produces a very distinctive neural signature in the brain when folks are listening to music. Empathy modulates music processing in areas of the brain that are associated with cognitive control, with social processing, with reward, and with emotion.” Through music, Wallmark says, we can “explore our own identity, learn about others, bond with others. So music can be useful in social cohesion, bonding, [and] it can help coordinate group activity. It can also demarcate social boundaries, who is like us and who is different from us.” In her book The Genius of Empathy: Practical Skills to Heal Your Sensitive Self, Your Relationships, and the World, author Judith Orloff says “If you're having difficulties with your relationships, just try this gift-- just to listen, with your eyes, with your voice, with your heart - it's such a gift and it helps people feel seen and heard and valued, which is the point of empathy.” Judith Orloff, pictured here, says “in my life, the most important thing to me is connection, and love and understanding. That is what gives me the most meaning Whether it's with nature, with human beings, with animals - empathy allows us that opportunity to connect with our human kind and everything about this life that we've been given.” Photo courtesy of Bob Riha Zachery Wallmark, pictured here, says “music can create a kind of playground to try on, in a fantasy sense, different types of emotional reactions. You can be a different person, you can experience things that you're not experiencing in your … normal life." Photo by Kim Leeson. Do you enjoy spending a lot of time alone? Are you more of an introvert? Are you sensitive and empathic to others' needs? All of these traits may make it challenging to navigate our busy, noise-filled lives. Would you like to learn to be a more empowered empath? Lisa continues the conversation today with guest Judith Orloff, MD. Dr. Orloff is a psychiatrist, an empath, and author of the new book, “The Genius of Empathy,” which offers powerful skills to tap into empathy as a daily healing practice in your life and relationships. She talks about how mirror neurons in our brains activate empathy and how empathy then activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This tones the vagus nerve and relaxation can happen more easily. It changes the fight-or-flight reaction. Your immunity increases if you watch an act of empathy. For example, when you see loving, compassionate mothers with their children, it will help you relax. There is empathy in the world, even though all we seem to see on the news are wars and violence. We can affect one another. If you are empathic, for example, and waiting in a long line, you may pick up the feelings of those around you. Being compassionate can change the energy. She also talks about relationships for empaths, including work situations. She suggests keeping a light schedule before an event or planning to stay there just an hour or so. Setting boundaries is very important. She further discusses how empathic people may think things are their fault, but she teaches how to let go and go into forgiveness. She advises us to not think about the past all the time. You can forgive people who hurt you by accepting that they can't change. If someone is mistreating you, minimize the contact with them or don't have contact at all if possible. Enforce healthy boundaries. Meditation helps. She also talks about social activists and how retreats and time away can be very healing. It is necessary for them to replenish their energy and develop empathy for themselves. Meditation and mindfulness practices can be very beneficial. She believes all people, no matter their situation, are looking for empathy. When you are around challenging people, she suggests practicing a “sacred pause.” Take a pause, breathe, re-center, and resume the conversation from a healthier place. You can also practice empathic listening, which is a way to hold a support space for someone. She offers practical tools and steps which are included in her latest book, “The Genius of Empathy.” She also hosts Dr. Orloff's Empath Support Community on social media. It's free and everyone is welcome. Dr. Orloff has written many books, including “The Empath's Survival Guide” and “Thriving as an Empath.” She is a New York Times bestselling author and a UCLA clinical faculty member. She synthesizes conventional medicine with cutting-edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality. Dr. Orloff specializes in treating highly sensitive people in her private practice. She has been featured on The Today Show, CNN, Oprah Magazine, and the New York Times. This is Part 2 of the interview. Info: DrJudithOrloff.com

Do you sometimes feel reclusive or like an introvert? Do you enjoy spending time by yourself? Perhaps you consider yourself sensitive and empathic. These traits may make it challenging to navigate very busy, noise-filled environments. But how can you become an empowered empath? Our guest today, Judith Orloff, MD, is a psychiatrist, an empath, and author of the new book, “The Genius of Empathy,” which offers powerful skills to tap into empathy as a daily healing practice in your life and relationships. She addresses these ideas and more during today's interview. During the pandemic, people were given permission to stay inside and alone. This may have seemed ideal for many empaths and Highly Sensitive People. Today, events have returned, we are invited to venture out socially, and life has gotten even more hectic. Yet, many people are still overwhelmed with the thought of being in noisy places and around crowds. Dr. Orloff discusses ways you can be strong whether staying in or going out into the world. So many people were isolated and lonely during the pandemic years. She talks about how it affected Highly Sensitive People, as well as empaths. Highly Sensitive People are very sensitive to lights, sounds, and crowds. Dr. Orloff talks about utilizing practical skills to stay in observation, rather than being taken out by the fray. Meditation may also help. She talks about psychopaths, narcissists, and those with empathy deficiency disorders. Oftentimes, there's an attraction between empaths and narcissists. The narcissists want to be adored, but they cannot reciprocate. Empaths need to be very cautious of these types of people. Dr. Orloff talks about “love bombing” and how that can be a warning sign. This is typical of narcissists and psychopaths in the beginning. Empaths want love and narcissists want power. This is a huge difference between the two. She further discusses the importance of self-love and self-empathy. Many of us are told we are not enough, or not doing a great job, etc. Loving ourselves is so important, even if you make mistakes. You can always make amends. Lisa and Dr. Orloff talk about difficult situations and conversations. Dr. Orloff suggests having conversations with only one topic. You can move on to additional topics later so as to not overwhelm the person. Keep your center, and have loving detachment. It's so important to not become enmeshed with another person, especially for empaths. Boundaries can be a huge challenge for empaths, but it's a skill that must be developed. Some people feel empathy fatigue. When there's too much noise, or too many people, it's time to take a break, sit in a quiet or dark room, and slow down. Meditation helps. An empath can be blown out emotionally by the news. It can be very painful to watch. So how can you stay informed but not be overwhelmed? Dr. Orloff suggests setting a limit as to how much news you watch and reminds us that it is not our responsibility to take on all the emotional suffering of the world. She deeply discusses the idea that if you have empathy, you will NOT have wars. Empathy helps to diffuse the warlike energy. You can be empathic toward others, and you don't want to carry resentments. You want to have a lightness of being and free yourself. Conflict resolution is so important. In fact, the Dalai Lama wrote the Foreword to her book. His life has been dedicated to empathy and compassion. Empathy can be a Superpower! The more people who can empathize, the more the world can become a more peaceful place. Everyone can do this. You must get out of your mind and judgement and go to your heart. The heart wants to try to find empathy and compassion for suffering, especially for those who trigger you. You can have compassion for the wounded part of those who trigger you by recognizing their misery. It doesn't excuse them, but it frees you. It's so important to be light, so you don't have to carry conflict with you. You can choose how much time you want to spend with this person. Don't be triggered. Write in your journal so you know that those are your emotional triggers. You can begin to work with them. In order to live more peacefully, it is important to accept people's rigidity. You do not need to agree with them. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: DrJudithOrloff.com

Hello beautiful souls! Has anyone ever told you you're too sensitive? I know, me too! I'm sure you've gotten a song stuck in your head. It happens to all of us. And once it gets in your head, it is hard to get rid of. It turns out there are some ways that have researched that do seem to work to get that song out of your head the next time it seeps in and just won't leave. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/03/21/heres-how-get-song-out-your-head/99264896/ You have probably done something to someone out of spite. Most people have. Interestingly, humans are just about the only creature on earth that acts out of spite. According to psychologist Simon McCarthy-Jones. Simon says spite comes from a feeling of being wronged – of not being treated fairly. Often people will go to great lengths to get revenge. That's spite. Still, spite may not be all bad. It can actually be useful. Listen as Simon reveals why we do things out of spite and why spite may be an important tool we use to keep each other honest. Simon is author of the book Spite: The Upside of Your Dark Side (https://amzn.to/2OO8FJu) Human memory is full of flaws. For example, most things we simply don't remember at all. Other things we don't remember very well and a lot of what we do remember gets distorted over time. So how do we make sense of our memory? Here to help explain it is Lisa Genova. She is a neuroscientist, writer and speaker who has appeared on The Today Show and PBS NewsHour, and she is author of the book Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting (https://amzn.to/3ccv2B7). Ever have a bad day? Sure, you have. And it seems that the worse the day gets – the worse it gets. Well, you can actually turn that spiral off. Listen as I reveal this simple technique that will stop you from focusing on the bad things happening so your day can get back on track.
