In this bonus episode of It Was What It Was hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper look into the striking parallels between Manchester United's managerial struggles in the post-Matt Busby and post-Sir Alex Ferguson eras. Despite decades of history and immense success, the club has faced a persistent challenge in finding a manager capable of replicating the legacy left by its legendary figures.Following the recent sacking of Erik Ten Hag, the imminent arrival of Ruben Amorim has reignited the age-old debate about the club's direction and leadership. Wilson and Draper explore how the patterns of the past continue to haunt United, questioning whether Amorim will be the answer to the club's woes or merely another chapter in a familiar narrative.Join us as we analyze the lessons learned (or not learned) from the club's history, the impact of managerial instability, and the pressing questions that linger: Can United break free from the cycle of déjà vu, or will history repeat itself once again? The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Sir Matt Busby was the Head Coach or as they say in Soccer, Manager, for Manchester United from 1945 until 1969.He was the first manager of an English team to win the European Cup which he did in 1968. As a player he won the FA cup with Manchester City and as Manager, won it twice. He also won the League title on 5 occasions. But as you will hear in this podcast, it's not necessarily the titles that make him a Great Coach. It's the way he helped Manchester rebuild after the second world war. And then, the way he and his team responded to the tragic events of 1958. When the team were traveling home from a European Cup match when their plane crashed on the runway. In total 23 people died, including 8 Manchester United payers, while 2 other players were injured so badly they never played again.Matt Busby died in 1994, and in this episode, I am going to create a posthumous discussion with him based on his words as read by a voice actor. I used 3 books to create this discussion, 2 of which he wrote.Sir Matt Busby by Patrick BarclaySoccer At The Top: My Life in Football by Matt BusbyMatt Busby My Story as told to David R. In this episode, we talk with Matt Busby who is the Senior Associate Pastor at Mission Chattanooga. Matt describes for us the evolution of a relationship between a specific church (Mission Chattanooga) and a coffee shop/restaurant/event space (The Camp House) in three different neighborhoods in downtown Chattanooga. Mission Chattanooga and Camp House began renting in the  Southside neighborhood, moved to the MLK neighborhood, and now are located in the Onion Bottom Neighborhood. This conversation highlights some of the ways that a church can bless the neighborhood in which it is located. The Camp House has been a gathering space, a cultural incubator, and a forum for important community conversations. And by drawing people into the neighborhood this entity has helped to enliven the neighborhood. In addition to gathering a diverse community for worship, Mission Chattanooga has sought ways to bless the neighborhood through mercy ministries and civic engagement. Matt shares with us some of the tradeoffs between working with volunteers in a non-profit setting and paid employees in a for profit endeavor. He also talks about his shifting pastoral identity as he navigates dividing his position description between event coordination and pastoral ministry. If you have ever wondered about how a church building can be utilized to bless a neighborhood throughout the week, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Episode ContributorsRev. This episode of ScaleUp Radio is one of our monthly theme presentations and it's around planning - in particular three year planning. But before you switch off with images of 110 page business plans or worse in your mind, it's not about that at all. We all know that we should be doing our planning at least an annually but how many of us really hand on heart do it properly and think about it in the right way with the right people involved and then come out with some really good priorities for the year for example that we stick to? So what we take you through here is a simple way of getting to the point where you've got that sorted, not a big written business document, but ideally on a one page plan.  So a nice simple way of doing it, and we look at some of the reasons why it's so important, and most importantly, how to go about it in a practical, pragmatic way that gets you to where you need to get to, because as small business owners, we don't want to spend all of our time with our head buried in spreadsheets and word documents.  And we also have a couple of guests presentations from business owners and their experiences of the planning and how they go about it and why they found it so valuable.   One is from Matt Busby, who is the founder and General Manager of the name Label company. And the other is Ian Morgan, who is the founder and director of MBS Accountants. They give some great insights as to how they go about planning within their businesses and the difference that it's made to them.  So I think you're going to get a lot of value out of this session, and something that you can take away and really start to apply to your business. I certainly encourage you to do so and think about how you can really set your direction and then how you can keep on top of it and take yourself further with your business. If you'd like a copy of them, there is a link in the show notes.   Following the presentation, there is also a panel discussion of business owners talking about Critical Numbers, and the challenges they've faced using them within their business - and how they dealt with those challenges.   You might think that this is a little dry as a subject - but Critical Numbers are important when it comes to your scale up journey.     Granger Forson from BizSmart linkedin.com/in/granger-forson-business-scale-joy-lean-coach   Luke Townsend linkedin.com/in/luke-townsend-5483461b9   Louise Blunt of BizSmart linkedin.com/in/louise-blunt-5a279714   Claire Hill from Hill HR Consultancy  linkedin.com/in/clairehillhr   Steve Bradstock linkedin.com/in/stephen-bradstock-1bbb1812   Peter Chatterley from The Talent Hackers linkedin.com/in/thetalenthackers     Stuart Avis of Audacious Creative linkedin.com/in/stu-avis     Amy Dyble at ME Financial Services linkedin.com/in/amydyble   Ben Murcott from Murcott Energy linkedin.com/in/ben-murcott-ceng-993a5258   Faith Guest from Tools of the Trade linkedin.com/in/faith-guest-407a428   Beth Newton from The Development Manager linkedin.com/in/beth-newton-951017137   Bryony Barber from Rippl linkedin.com/in/bryony-barber-a3794056   Caroline Meredith from Platform81 linkedin.com/in/caroline-meredith-6736081b2   Charlotte Albutt from Fews Marquees linkedin.com/in/charlotte-albutt-13099a232   Claire Hill from Hill HR linkedin.com/in/clairehillhr   Claire Bennett from Hornbeam Workplace Wellbeing linkedin.com/in/claire-m-bennett   Emma Canning from Cannins Exterior Cleaning linkedin.com/in/emma-canning-055655143   Gary Mawhinney linkedin.com/in/gary-mawhinney-74569524   Helen Groves from Food Safety Logic linkedin.com/in/helen-groves464   John Heseltine from Odious Consulting linkedin.com/in/johnheseltine   Jonathan Boxall-Southall from Harlequins Costumes linkedin.com/in/jonathan-boxall-southall-64340b245   Matt Busby of The Name Label Company linkedin.com/in/matt-busby-79594b5   Miguel de Sousa from Big Cause linkedin.com/in/miguel-de-sousa-tutoring-with-heart   Neil Hastings from Hasti-Brokers linkedin.com/in/neil-hastings-b8861795   Nick Wroe from Platform 81 linkedin.com/in/nick-wroe-149527b   Noel Kessell from WPA Healthcare Practice linkedin.com/in/noel-kessell-cert-cii-a2b9121   Ray Bower from Adder Bookkeeping linkedin.com/in/ray-bower-5b738218   Rhian Jones from Seasonal Soul Home linkedin.com/in/rhianyddjones   Robert Gibson from Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions linkedin.com/in/robert-gibson-miet-29541253   Samantha Wills from Denvic linkedin.com/in/samantha-wills-298b9022   Simon Baldwin from High House Wealth Management linkedin.com/in/simondbaldwin   Steve Harris from Central Finance linkedin.com/in/steve-harris-36b6731a   Sukhraj Gill from JDP Procurement linkedin.com/in/sukhraj-gill-09430519   Sukjeet Kaur Watts from Roshni linkedin.com/in/sukjeet-kaur-watts-3562572b   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. On this week's episode of ScaleUp we have a business presentation for you, all around the theme of Empowerment.   When we talk about Empowerment we're referring to the team within your business; giving them accountability and responsibility for the work that they do.   For some business owners Empowerment is a difficult area to work through, because it's all about giving up some control - without feeling that you're out of control. We also describe it as going from a Leader - Follower model to a Leader - Manager, Leader - Leader model.   As always with these presentations on ScaleUp Radio, there is a lot of advice and practical help that you can put into practice straight away.   Plenty of subjects covered, including:    - How, and where, empowerment needs to begin within your business; and why trust is a major part of the process  - Why empowerment isn't just handing over the business - and how you go about creating a framework for empowerment  - How a system of Empowerment needs another presentation we've done on Business Rhythms to be in place to get the most out of it.    You'll also hear from other business owners who will discuss their own approaches to Empowerment - and the challenges they've faced when implementing it.   I also mention some tools and images within this presentation, and if you would like a copy of them there is an email address in the show notes.         Turn The Ship Around! In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we have a couple of presentations and a panel discussion on the theme of ‘how and why to define your core purpose'.   Do not underestimate the power of galvanising your team around a purpose. The longer I've been in business and the more businesses we have worked with, it is clear that those with a strong sense of core values and core purpose are the ones that succeed over time and go further than the others.  They also tend to be the most resilient in challenging times!     Purpose-driven workers are 54 percent more likely to stay for five years at a company and 30 percent more likely to grow into high performers than those who arrive at work with only their paycheck as the motivator.   In this episode, Louise guides us through what we need to think about and we bring in additional perspectives from Stu Avis of Audacious Creative and Lizzy Bernthal of Release Your Potential about their thoughts on core purpose, as well as an excellent piece on integrity by Lizzy.   The episode is wrapped up with a  panel discussion where a group of business owners discuss their take on core purpose and the importance to their businesses.     Presenters – Stu Avis – Audacious Creative - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/stu-avis Dr Lizzy Bernthal – Release Your Potential - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/lizzybernthal-resilience-specialist    David Lynes from Unique IQ - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/davidlynes  Clare Vale from Sign Solutions - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/clare-vale-6032b416  David Lincoln Lewis from Industrial Switchgear - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/david-lincoln-lewis-66242193  Hannah Haffield from Make More Noise PR - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/hannahhaffield  Nigel Busby from In Control Marketing - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/nigel-busby-310aa57  Dave Perrigo from Perrigo Consultants - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/daveperrigo  Jenny Powell from JDP Procurement - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jenny-powell-987137a    Lisa Chambers from KMB Telemarketing - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/chamberslisa  Paul Rhodes from Green Gorilla - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/ukwebdevelopment  Matt Busby from The Name Label - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/matt-busby-79594b5  Gary MaWhinney from Platform 81 - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/gary-mawhinney-74569524  Matt Parsons from Surftech IT - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/matthew-parsons-a1515521  Faith Guest from Tools of the Trade - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/faith-guest-407a428  Jeremy Strong from Invoco Telecoms - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jeremystrong  Stu Avis from Audacious Creative - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/stu-avis Peter Chatterley from Talent Hackers - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/thetalenthackers      Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. On this week's episode of ScaleUp Radio we have an excellent presentation and discussion about Measuring Engagement.    This is all about the communication between you as the business owner and your team, and making sure that you have a system in place to track engagement, and a process for ensuring that you follow up on any feedback you receive,   If you've listened to previous episodes of ScaleUp Radio, then you'll know that there are four pillars of scaling up your business - Strategy, Cash, Execution and People - and Measuring Engagement and feedback is from the People section.   Within the presentation, we discuss:    - Why you need to measure engagement and have a process in place for gathering feedback from your team, no matter how large or small your team is  - What can you be doing, that maybe you're not doing - but also what are you already doing, and how can you improve it?  - When the feedback needs to change; when you stop looking at everyone's feedback and only look at your direct reports   You'll also hear from George Blakeway from Team Performance Scan who will talk about how engagement and feedback within your business can be implemented - and the benefits that it has.   As well as the presentation, there are also a couple of discussions with a panel of business owners, who share their own experiences when it comes to dealing with engaging with your teams - and talk about the powerful effect that engagement and feedback has.   As always, there are tools and resources mentioned in this episode. Manchester United F.C. Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United (often stylised as Man Utd), or simply United, is a professional football club based in the Old Trafford area of Greater Manchester, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top division in the English football league system. Nicknamed the Red Devils, it was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, but changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. The club moved from Newton Heath to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910. Manchester United have won a record 20 League titles, 12 FA Cups, five League Cups, and a record 21 FA Community Shields. They have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League three times, and the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup once each. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, 10 years after eight of the club's players were killed in the Munich air disaster, they became the first English club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson is the club's longest-serving and most successful manager, winning 38 trophies, including 13 league titles, 5 FA Cups, and 2 UEFA Champions League titles between 1986 and 2013. In the 1998–99 season, under Ferguson, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the European treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League. In winning the UEFA Europa League under José Mourinho in 2016–17, they became one of five clubs to have won the original three main UEFA club competitions (the Champions League, Europa League and Cup Winners' Cup). Manchester United is one of the most widely supported football clubs in the world and has rivalries with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Leeds United. Manchester United was the highest-earning football club in the world for 2016–17, with an annual revenue of €676.3 million, and the world's third most valuable football club in 2019, valued at £3.15 billion ($3.81 billion). After being floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was taken private in 2005 after a purchase by American businessman Malcolm Glazer valued at almost £800 million, of which over £500 million of borrowed money became the club's debt. From 2012, some shares of the club were listed on the New York Stock Exchange, although the Glazer family retains overall ownership and control of the club. On this week's episode of ScaleUp Radio we have a great presentation and discussion, all centred around Business Rhythms.   First of all, you'll hear from Granger Forson explaining a little more about Business Rhythms; what they are, how we should approach them and the benefit that implementing them can bring to your business.   Arguably, the Business Rhythm, alongside the 90 Day Planning that you will have heard us talk about before, is the most important part of running your business. Essentially, a Business Rhythm is a structure of daily, weekly and monthly meetings carefully put together to ensure that you bridge the gap between strategy and execution consistently well – ensuring that you do the right things and that they are done well.   Of course, most of you may already have a rhythm of sorts within your business – but we find that most rhythms are focused on the day to day and miss some really important aspects. We cover some of those and others, including:    - What you need to do to get the rhythm right. Maybe the rhythm you've already got isn't the right one for your business?  -  Why you should still create a rhythm, even if you're a solo business owner.  -  How casual encounters can ruin a good Business Rhythm   Of course, as always, there is so much more in the episode.   Also you'll hear a panel discussion where a group of business owners talk about their Business Rhythm; how they incorporate and maintain their own rhythm - and how you should go about creating and maintaining your own. A full list of the business owners featured in the panel discussion will be in the show notes.       Matthew Parsons of Surftech IT linkedin.com/in/matthew-parsons-a1515521   Matt Busby of The Name Label Company linkedin.com/in/matt-busby-79594b5   Stuart Avis of Audacious Creative linkedin.com/in/stu-avis   Lisa Chambers of KMB Telemarketing linkedin.com/in/chamberslisa   Paul Rhodes of Green Gorilla Apps linkedin.com/in/ukwebdevelopment   Graeme Thurman of Citizen Communications linkedin.com/in/advertisingandmarketingeventsandexhibitionsvideoandediting   Faith Guest of Tools of the Trade linkedin.com/in/faith-guest-407a428   Nigel Busby of InControl Marketing linkedin.com/in/nigel-busby-310aa57   Jenny Powell of JDP Procurement linkedin.com/in/jenny-powell-9312798   David Lynes of Unique IQ linkedin.com/in/davidlynes   Steve Bradstock of First Base IT Solutions linkedin.com/in/stephen-bradstock-1bbb1812   David Lincoln Lewis of Industrial Switchgear linkedin.com/in/david-lincoln-lewis-66242193   Hannah Haffield of Make More Noise PR linkedin.com/in/david-lincoln-lewis-66242193   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. And that's just for starters, because Edward and Ian had all sorts of shit to unpack, what with it having just been the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Amongst their discoveries is that Pep Guardiola is (still) bald, Japhet Tanganga is now one of our own (if you support Spurs) and it's never not going to be too soon to make any jokes about Matt Busby.Ian imagines an alternative universe in which Manchester United are only as good as Sheffield Wednesday, Edward reveals which bird Paul Pogba looks like this week and Arsenal's collective buttocks receive a traditional garnish. Meanwhile, as VAR enters its rebellious and nihilistic teenage years, your heroes also answer more listeners' questions, helpfully establishing Harry Kane's exact cash value and helping to doom a number of previously distinguished top flight clubs to the most igniminious relegation of all. This is the breathtaking story of an old Manchester United manager. This is the story of the ravenously determined man who created the club's academy, who single-handedly dragged the club through a six-year global war, who set up United to be managed by an ambitious young scot named Matt Busby. This is a man who died in the Munich snow. This is Walter Crickmer's story. In 1930, United had nothing. Supporters protested. The bank said, 'no more'. The directors didn't know what they were doing. Walter Crickmer dragged Manchester United back from debt to glory. But by the end of the decade, by which time Crickmer had started Manchester United's world-famous academy and become first team manager too, war had begun. In 1941, United had nothing once again. Kits, records, footballs and everything else was destroyed as a stray Nazi bomb struck Old Trafford. Crickmer single-handedly dragged United back to life. The Man Who Made A Football Club by Patrick Barclay is available at all good book stores. Sir Matt Busby, who took Manchester United to unprecedented glory before seeing the club through profound tragedy, created the global entity that spreads from Old Trafford today. A player with Manchester City and Liverpool before the Second World War, Busby remained at the forefront of football through four decades and made an extraordinary contribution to the game in terms of both style and substance. In this definitive biography, Patrick Barclay looks back at Busby’s phenomenal life and career, including the rise of the Busby Babes in the 1950s, the Munich disaster that claimed 23 lives and the Wembley victory ten years on that made United the first English team to win the European Cup. Denis Law, Pat Crerand and such other members of that great side as Alex Stepney, David Sadler and John Aston are among the host of voices testifying to the qualities that set Sir Matt apart. This is the story of one of the greatest figures in football history, and of the making of a legacy that will last for ever.

During these episodes we will take a look back at examples of mental ill health in football from yesteryear.  "George inspired me when I was young. I actually think we were very similar players - dribblers who were able to create moments of magic." Diego Maradona It took George Best two separate attempts to finally convince himself to stay in Manchester as a homesick teenager. The Manchester United scout Bob Bishop told Matt Busby he had found himself a genius, he wasn't wrong.  Best would go on to become one of the most celebrated and enjoyed footballers of all time.   But off the field, an eccentric and expensive lifestyle was quickly becoming his primary focus, as George's addictions took over. Joined by Rob Blanchette of The Bleacher Report, and Barry Shmeizer, a Manchester United fan who met Best in his hometown of Johannesburg in 1974, we discuss Best the player, as well as his addictions and turbulent lifestyle.  In a world where mental health didn't exist, his lifestyle was the source of judgement, derision and amusement. What have we learnt from George Best? If anything.

In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent speaks to Matt Busby of The Name Label Company. They do pretty much what they say on the tin - provide printed labels. Their key markets are schools and care homes, but they tend to sell B2C, rather than B2B. It’s not been the easiest journey for Matt and he’s learned some difficult lessons along the way but, as you’ll see, he has come out the other side with a very positive outlook for his business - and industry as a whole. As always, it was a wide-ranging conversation, which covered plenty of ground and contains an awful lot to takeaway for you, wherever you are on your own scale up journey. Some of the subject covered included:  - Definitely listen to the advice ‘Don’t go into business with friends or family’ - Matt and the company ignored that, and paid the cost  - Like so many businesses, The Name Label Company  found a lifeline in the terrible time that was the lockdown that really helped them get through it  - It’s okay to have more than one USP  - The importance of keeping ahead of the competition, by changing, growing and innovating. It’s worth pointing out that Matt mentions Elevate a couple of times during the conversation. The Elevate Programme is something that is led by BizSmart, who Kevin is a Director of, and is funded by Worcestershire County Council and the European Regional Development Fund. Matt has managed to develop a really nice business here. It’s a small team, providing a service for a huge number of people - with a great USP - and it’s a continuing service, with customers returning again and again and again. The only way to understand this moment is to understand 400 years of systemic injustice.  Today's podcast aspires to that goal but is simply the tip of the iceberg.   This episode is based on a post Matt Busby created and is largely an audio version of that post on Facebook, cataloguing the thesis of Ibram X. Kendi's book "Stamped From The Beginning" that every moment of racial progress in the United States is met but an equal racist backlash that limits or abolishes that progress.   Systemic racism is not about the hatred of one individual toward another but the ways in which our very systems reinforce racist outcomes, divisions, and ideas.

This is the story about how Busby revolutionised a football club and arguably provided a template for Manchester United to grow into the most recognisable sports club in the world. Post war Britain was a bleak landscape. Devastated by war, the country was in the process of rebuilding its infrastructure and institutions. One symbol of this period was the youthful and energetic Manchester United team being meticulously rebuilt by Matt Busby. Such was the freshness and optimism around this team, they became know as 'The Busby Babes'. However, their progress was dealt a tragic blow during the Munich Air Disaster on February 6th, 1958. The Busby Babes will forever be remembered for their outstanding footballing abilities and, sadly, the tragedy that halted the progress of one of the greatest teams in the post war period. United Through Time looks at Louis Rocca: the second-generation Italian immigrant who brought Matt Busby to Manchester United and created the country’s first ever organised scouting network. This is the man without whom Manchester United could have been called Manchester Celtic and who helped to set up the Manchester United academy as well as helping to save the club from bankruptcy twice.Louis Rocca dedicated 60 years of his life to Manchester United, starting out as an eight-year-old teaboy and progressing through every role you can imagine. The cornerstones of the club - its name, its stadium, its record of academy players, its colours - were all laid down during Rocca’s time of involvement.United Through Time is the new podcast delving into Manchester United’s long and famous history. Going in chronological order, United Through Time will focus on the most important individuals at the club since Manchester United was founded as Newton Heath in 1878.Hosted by Harry Robinson, two guests are heard on this episode as we cover the themes of Italian re-unification, life in 19th century Britain and much more as well as the more general football stuff.Tony Rea is the utter authority on Italian immigration into Manchester and the Ancoats community which Rocca grew up in. Louis Rocca dedicated 55 years of his life to Manchester United and those who do know of him consider him the ‘father’ or ‘grandfather’ of the club. From a 12-year-old teaboy to kit man to groundsmen to chief scout to manager, the second-generation Italian immigration is one of the most influential individuals in the club’s history and marks the start of United Through Time, the new podcast looking back at Manchester United’s long and famed history.Rocca will be episode one as we start with a man who is criminally unknown given that he helped to keep the club afloat on not one but two occasions, he may have been involved with the naming of the club, he created the country’s first ever organised scouting network, he helped to found the Manchester United Junior Athletic Club, the predecessor to the ‘academy’. All of that, but also the fact that it was he who brought Sir Matt Busby to the club, then just Matt Busby, in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. The Beatles have never been the biggest of sports fans, but the paths of the two past tmes have crossed over the years.     We all remember John Lennon's interview with Howard Cosell, or Paul McCartney's halftime spectacular at Super Bowl XXXIX, but that is not all.    George loved motor sports throughout his life, Paul was a supporter of both Liverpool and Everton (although he was a bigger fan of the latter), and in recent years has gained an appreciation for the NHL, NBA and major league baseball.    Tune in to discover all this and more, and maybe even learn a bit about Matt Busby or one of the figures on the Sgt. Pepper cover!

The Long View
Celebrity Football Managers

As pre-season training gets underway and transfer business goes on a-pace Jonathan Freedland takes the Long View of celebrity Football management. The new season will see the clash of several of the world's greatest managers lead by Jose Mourinho of Manchester United and Pep Guardiola of Manchester City. It was a similar story in Manchester back in the mid 1960s. Matt Busby had been at United since the war building championship winning teams and a formidable reputation. City were languishing in the second division. But with the arrival of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, City found a combination to challenge their Manchester rivals. And it really was a case of the Managers being the all important figures. When England won the world cup in 1966 it was Joe Mercer who'd just lead City to the old 2nd Division championship who was part of the BBC Television World Cup panel, endearing himself to the nation by referring to Pele as Peely. Jonathan is joined by a former City player Paul Hince, Dr Colin Shindler, a screenwriter, academic and fanatic City fan, Sarah Collins who covers the city's sport for BBC local radio and Paul Gilroy of the League Managers Association. They discuss the then and now and the curious way in which - in these two eras - it was the Managers who were in the limelight. Much has changed, not least in terms of global reach, money and the international flavour of the Premiership, but at heart it's the same - the men on the pitch will be playing, and did play, in the shadow of the Celebrity Managers.
