In this bonus episode of It Was What It Was hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper look into the striking parallels between Manchester United's managerial struggles in the post-Matt Busby and post-Sir Alex Ferguson eras. Despite decades of history and immense success, the club has faced a persistent challenge in finding a manager capable of replicating the legacy left by its legendary figures.Following the recent sacking of Erik Ten Hag, the imminent arrival of Ruben Amorim has reignited the age-old debate about the club's direction and leadership. Wilson and Draper explore how the patterns of the past continue to haunt United, questioning whether Amorim will be the answer to the club's woes or merely another chapter in a familiar narrative.Join us as we analyze the lessons learned (or not learned) from the club's history, the impact of managerial instability, and the pressing questions that linger: Can United break free from the cycle of déjà vu, or will history repeat itself once again? Sir Matt Busby was the Head Coach or as they say in Soccer, Manager, for Manchester United from 1945 until 1969.He was the first manager of an English team to win the European Cup which he did in 1968. As a player he won the FA cup with Manchester City and as Manager, won it twice. He also won the League title on 5 occasions. But as you will hear in this podcast, it's not necessarily the titles that make him a Great Coach. It's the way he helped Manchester rebuild after the second world war. And then, the way he and his team responded to the tragic events of 1958. When the team were traveling home from a European Cup match when their plane crashed on the runway. In total 23 people died, including 8 Manchester United payers, while 2 other players were injured so badly they never played again.Matt Busby died in 1994, and in this episode, I am going to create a posthumous discussion with him based on his words as read by a voice actor. I used 3 books to create this discussion, 2 of which he wrote.Sir Matt Busby by Patrick BarclaySoccer At The Top: My Life in Football by Matt BusbyMatt Busby My Story as told to David R. Het is één van de grootste, misschien wel dé grootste voetbalclub ter wereld: Manchester United. My guest is Harry Robinson, author of 'The Men Who Made Manchester United: The Untold Story'. We're looking at the foundation of the club in a railway yard in Newton Heath through to the handover to Matt Busby in 1945. The club came very close to collapse on several occasions. It's a fascinating listen, even if you don't support Manchester United.
In this episode, we talk with Matt Busby who is the Senior Associate Pastor at Mission Chattanooga. Matt describes for us the evolution of a relationship between a specific church (Mission Chattanooga) and a coffee shop/restaurant/event space (The Camp House) in three different neighborhoods in downtown Chattanooga. Mission Chattanooga and Camp House began renting in the Southside neighborhood, moved to the MLK neighborhood, and now are located in the Onion Bottom Neighborhood. This conversation highlights some of the ways that a church can bless the neighborhood in which it is located. The Camp House has been a gathering space, a cultural incubator, and a forum for important community conversations. And by drawing people into the neighborhood this entity has helped to enliven the neighborhood. In addition to gathering a diverse community for worship, Mission Chattanooga has sought ways to bless the neighborhood through mercy ministries and civic engagement. Matt shares with us some of the tradeoffs between working with volunteers in a non-profit setting and paid employees in a for profit endeavor. He also talks about his shifting pastoral identity as he navigates dividing his position description between event coordination and pastoral ministry. If you have ever wondered about how a church building can be utilized to bless a neighborhood throughout the week, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Episode ContributorsRev. This episode of ScaleUp Radio is one of our monthly theme presentations and it's around planning - in particular three year planning. But before you switch off with images of 110 page business plans or worse in your mind, it's not about that at all. We all know that we should be doing our planning at least an annually but how many of us really hand on heart do it properly and think about it in the right way with the right people involved and then come out with some really good priorities for the year for example that we stick to? So what we take you through here is a simple way of getting to the point where you've got that sorted, not a big written business document, but ideally on a one page plan. So a nice simple way of doing it, and we look at some of the reasons why it's so important, and most importantly, how to go about it in a practical, pragmatic way that gets you to where you need to get to, because as small business owners, we don't want to spend all of our time with our head buried in spreadsheets and word documents. And we also have a couple of guests presentations from business owners and their experiences of the planning and how they go about it and why they found it so valuable. One is from Matt Busby, who is the founder and General Manager of the name Label company. And the other is Ian Morgan, who is the founder and director of MBS Accountants. They give some great insights as to how they go about planning within their businesses and the difference that it's made to them. So I think you're going to get a lot of value out of this session, and something that you can take away and really start to apply to your business. I certainly encourage you to do so and think about how you can really set your direction and then how you can keep on top of it and take yourself further with your business. As always, there are tools mentioned throughout the presentation. Just five months before the tragic Munich Air Disaster, the Busby Babes came to town and took on Paddy Coad's Shamrock Rovers at Dailymount Park in the European Cup 1st Round. The lads talk about Matt Busby's thought on a Shamrock Rovers at that time, Dubliner Liam Whelan's starring role in this game and his sad passing and also a closer run second leg which saw the first ever European goal for an Irish team. There's also some chat on football memorabilia and a notable forged Dirk Kuyt signature.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/extratimecom)
This is the story about how Busby revolutionised a football club and arguably provided a template for Manchester United to grow into the most recognisable sports club in the world. Post war Britain was a bleak landscape. Devastated by war, the country was in the process of rebuilding its infrastructure and institutions. One symbol of this period was the youthful and energetic Manchester United team being meticulously rebuilt by Matt Busby. Such was the freshness and optimism around this team, they became know as 'The Busby Babes'. However, their progress was dealt a tragic blow during the Munich Air Disaster on February 6th, 1958. The Busby Babes will forever be remembered for their outstanding footballing abilities and, sadly, the tragedy that halted the progress of one of the greatest teams in the post war period.
