Freelance writers know that getting paid can be difficult, and managers of freelance writers know why processing those payments is difficult to get paid on time or at all. Some companies don't have simple invoicing systems or solutions for fixing what's wrong with their invoicing processes. Today's guest is Matt Saincome, Co-Founder and CEO of OutVoice and The Hard Times. OutVoice is a freelancer/writer invoicing platform that pays them with one click. Matt explains how to fix invoicing issues and get freelance writers paid on time. Some of the highlights of the show include: Payment Problem: There has got to be a better way, and now there is one Publisher Problems: Tough business to make money, ad landscape has changed Revenue-based Solutions: People don't update/upgrade their tools elsewhere Results: Businesses with inefficient tools, resources become rusted in place Clicks and Revenue: Relies on effectively paying and retaining freelance writers Mission: Waiting for check to pay rent? OutVoice positively impacts people's lives Paid or not on purpose? Reason is ancient, not automated/tiered invoice systems Links: OutVoice The Hard Times Matt Saincome's Email Matt Saincome on Twitter Matt Saincome on LinkedIn Mailchimp Bill.com DoNotPay Ben Sailer on LinkedIn CoSchedule Quotes from Matt Saincome: “The problem is very clear. It's the way that content creators are paid for freelance work is stone-age-level bullshit. It's nonsense. It shouldn't be done this way.” “People don't get around to upgrading their tools elsewhere, and there's these really intense inefficiencies that fester in their businesses.” “OutVoice uses automation, CMS integration, and a more purpose-built invoicing solution.” “If you have better tools, you're going to like your co-workers a little bit more. You're going to like your job a little bit more.”

The way he tells it, The Hard Times was a hit right out of the gate. Some perfect combination of zeitgeist and internet algorithms had the satirical site racking up a million page views via social media sites like Facebook almost instantly. It’s a far cry from the sort of hard luck grinding stories one usually hears about the punk scene — but when it’s right, it’s right. Initially focused on the punk and hardcore scene, it’s since grown into a broader view on millennial culture. Founded with few expectations in 2014 by Matt and Ed Saincome and Bill Conway, the site managed to capture much of what made The Onion a phenomenon, while staying focused on a wide range of subcultures. Earlier this year, the site launched an interview podcast, with more multimedia projects in the works, including a book and television show.

What’s the right way to have sex with a dolphin? I’m sure you didn’t expect that question to be posted on a beer-focused interview show, but here we are. It’s a fun benefit—if you dare call it that—of chatting with this episode’s guest. Matt Saincome doesn’t write about beer. He doesn’t actually drink it, either. But as founder and editor-in-chief of the satirical website The Hard Times, he does offer a unique perspective on writing and storytelling. And that’s why he’s a guest on the GBH Collective, which gives us the opportunity to dig a little deeper with fellow media members, even if their topic of choice is comedy and not IPAs. Matt has a background in traditional journalism, but it was a serendipitous assignment to write about a man who wrote a book about intercourse with an aquatic mammal that reset his career expectations. You’ll hear all about it in this conversation, as well as our attempts to dissect the idea of truth in reporting and comedy, and what makes for creating a successful website when there are print, digital, and TV outlets all competing in satirical space. We live in a time when moments of levity can sometimes feel hard to find, and the way Matt and his team use humor to force internal reflection and laughs is something we can all appreciate. To be up front, this conversation isn’t about beer, but it is about one person’s journey to create something unique and special, which we all endeavor to do in one way or another. This is Matt Saincome, founder, editor-in-chief, and straight edge punk rocker of The Hard Times. Listen in...
