In November 2024, an individual identified as "John Doe" filed a lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs and several of his affiliated companies, including Bad Boy Records LLC and Daddy's House Recordings Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Case No. 1:24-cv-08852-JPC). The plaintiff alleges that in 2022, during a house party in New York City, Combs drugged him with Rohypnol, causing him to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, Doe claims he found Combs sexually assaulting him. Sean Combs, the appellant in United States v. Combs, case number 24-CR-542 (AS), has filed a motion for pretrial release from federal custody. The motion argues that Combs does not pose a flight risk, citing his deep ties to the community, longstanding residency in the United States, and significant business investments. Combs' defense emphasizes that he is fully prepared to comply with any conditions of release, including electronic monitoring or home confinement, to ensure his presence at trial.The motion also contends that Combs' continued detention negatively impacts his ability to prepare an adequate defense, citing limited access to legal counsel and case materials while in custody. The defense argues that pretrial release is essential to ensure a fair trial, noting that Combs has no history of failing to appear in court and that the charges against him, while serious, do not warrant indefinite pretrial incarceration. Josh Bongard is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Vermont and director of the Morphology, Evolution & Cognition Laboratory. His work involves automated design and manufacture of soft-, evolved-, and crowdsourced robots, as well as computer-designed organisms. In 2007, he was awarded a prestigious Microsoft Research New Faculty Fellowship and was named one of MIT Technology Review's top 35 young innovators under 35. In 2010 he was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by Barack Obama at a White House ceremony. He has received funding from NSF, NASA, DARPA, ARO and the Sloan Foundation. He is the co-author of the book How The Body Shapes the Way we Think, the co-author of "Designing Intelligence: Why Brains Aren't Enough", the instructor of a reddit-based evolutionary robotics MOOC, and director of the robotics outreach program Twitch Plays Robotics.
