Sometimes a story isn't a story at all. It's a ball that interested players use to score points in whatever game they're playing — politics, cred, likes, lols. In this episode, we're talking about one such story. In San Francisco, a man named Bob Lee, a tech luminary, was murdered in the early morning hours of April 4. He'd been stabbed and left for dead. It was game on for commentators in the world of tech and elsewhere, like perpetual gamer Elon Musk, who used the opportunity to criticize the city's approach to violent crime. A few days ago, the SF journalism outlet Mission Local broke a huge story: Police arrested the alleged murderer ... and he's a tech entrepreneur who knew Lee. Other major outlets like The New York Times and Washington Post followed up on Mission Local's scoop — even if they didn't credit the site for breaking the story in the first place. There's still a lot of story swirling around: Who is the alleged killer, Nima Momeni? How did he know Lee? How did it lead to murder? And of course, this being San Francisco, the story still gets bounced around in the blame game of crime, homelessness, and drug addiction. Lotta bouncing. Today, we're talking to Brandon's longtime friend and former colleague from SF Weekly, Joe Eskenazi. Joe broke the story of the arrest. He's a lifelong Bay Area journalist who many call the best reporter in San Francisco. We have him on to talk about the case and the ways it got spun to serve certain agendas. We also talk about those very real and lasting problems the city faces, why it's so hard for the city to deal with them, and how SF is still, in many ways, worthy of the title Joe bestowed on it way back in 2009 with his story, "The Worse-Run Big City in the U.S." That story is still well worth a read if you want to understand how good intentions, money, and a lack of accountability lead to, as has become shorthand, shit and needles in the streets. As for the Lee case, as Joe says in our discussion, "This isn't about tech, and this isn't about San Francisco. It's about something else." In this episode, we try to dodge the balls and figure out what the game really is. NOTES Here's video of the city's press conference announcing Momeni's arrest. We play a clip of SF Police Chief Bob Scott talking human nature in the episode.

“Freaks, you can call me Mom,” Nicky Click boldly proclaims on her newest album. Given her lengthy career, she's got the creds to back it up. Born in New Hampshire, she began making music in 2003 and was once described by SF Weekly as a “one-woman feminist electro band.” Influenced equally by riot grrl and pop divas, she released her first album, You're Already A Member, right as the DIY-electro and queercore boom of the mid-aughts was gaining steam. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/justmusicsaramathius/message
You might think you can't learn life-changing business success principles from a seasoned teacher who spent much of his life helping at-risk youth succeed in every way—from school to happiness to forging their own strong families to careers—but you'd be wrong! You can learn a TON from this award-winning changemaker, Dr. Joseph Marshall, and The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie in today's engaging and inspiring episode. "Doc" Marshall delivers down-to-earth, first-hand, real-world tips and advice for success in life and work. MacArthur Genius Award-winner Joseph Marshall, Ph.D., is an author, lecturer, radio talk show host and most importantly, a former math teacher and administrator with the San Francisco Unified School District and a long-time community anti-violence activist. As a public school teacher, he grew sick and tired of watching his most promising students fall prey to the lure of gangs, drugs, and crime, and end up either dead or in prison. Finding that neither the justice nor school system seemed willing even to try to address the underlying problems--to give the kids the kind of information and assistance they really needed--he leapfrogged right over the system and co-founded the Omega Boys Club, based upon the belief that young people of the inner city want a way out of the life they're in, but just don't know how to get out. Since the club's inception in 1987, with a handful of kids in a community center basement, he and his small army of street soldiers have already helped 600 kids out of gang-banging and drug-dealing, and pushed, tutored, driven and even funded 140 inner-city kids into colleges around the country. He's the co-founder and executive director of Stay Alive and Free, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping at-risk youth alive and free, unharmed by violence and free from incarceration. Dr. Marshall has won MANY MANY awards for his successful leadership and results, and he continues to win awards. He also founded the Street Soldiers National Consortium, a group of activists dedicated to preventing violence nationwide, and co-founded the Omega Boys Club. Dr. Marshall's life-transforming, proven principles of success lie in treating violence as any doctor would treat a disease. And these principles transfer to anyone's life and business, no matter what age, and no matter where you are in the growth and learning curve! Ellen McGarrahan was a young reporter at the Miami Herald when she volunteered to witness the execution of Jesse Tafero, who'd been convicted of killing two police officers. That execution went horrifically awry, and watching it changed the course of Ellen's life. She left journalism, became a private investigator, and reinvestigated the murders attributed to Jesse Tafero, in an effort to determine whether she'd witnessed the execution of an innocent man. Ellen details her reexamination of the crime, and the surprising evidence she uncovered, in Two Truths and a Lie: A Murder, a Private Investigator, and Her Search for Justice, an Edgar Award finalist, a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice, and one of Marie Claire's 10 Best True Crime Books of the Year. In this episode of Book Dreams, Ellen talks with Julie and Eve about the reasons that Jesse Tefaro's execution “began to really feel like a haunting”; the forces that drove her to put her life on hold 25 years after his death to re-examine the crime that two noted death penalty scholars and many others believed he hadn't committed; and the investigative skills she used to uncover evidence that goes far beyond what was revealed by the criminal justice system. Ellen McGarrahan is the author of Two Truths and a Lie: A Murder, a Private Investigator, and Her Search for Justice. She worked for 10 years as an investigative reporter and staff writer at newspapers, including The Village Voice, The Miami Herald, and SF Weekly. In 1996, she began working as a private detective and has since founded a private investigation agency. Bio: "I grew up in a liberal Mennonite family that had ditched headcheese, dumplings, and sauerkraut in favor of lentil casseroles and tofu stir-fries. After college, I cooked professionally for several years in San Francisco before leaving the kitchen for the supposedly lucrative world of journalism. I reviewed restaurants in the Bay Area and Seattle for 11 years as the staff critic at the East Bay Express, the Seattle Weekly, and SF Weekly. From 2014 to 2019, I was a features writer at the San Francisco Chronicle, where I covered the intersection of food and culture, with a particular focus on small and immigrant-owned restaurants — labor abuses in Taquerias, 50-year-old-neighborhood favorites ignored by the press, independent restaurants struggling with rampant gentrification. I have contributed to the Wall Street Journal, Eating well, New Yorker, Bon Appetit, Hazlitt, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco magazine, Eater, Men's Health, Wine & Spirits, and Lucky Peach (RIP). My first book, Hippie Food, came out in 2018. My reporting and criticism have won awards from the James Beard Foundation, the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Association of Food Journalists, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and my articles have been anthologized in several editions of Best Food Writing." Peter-Astrid Kane is a freelance journalist and communications manager at S.F. Pride. Their work has appeared in the Guardian, 48Hills, the S.F. Bay Times, the S.F. Examiner, SFGate, The Infatuation and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other outlets. From 2015 to 2019, Peter-Astrid worked for SF Weekly, ultimately becoming its editor. On Sept. 14, in response to the news that SF Weekly would be shutting down for an “indefinite hiatus,” Peter-Astrid wrote a farewell column for 48Hills about SF Weekly's legacy and what it was like to be the leader of a newsroom where resources kept dwindling every year. Here's a great paragraph towards the end of the piece that reflects on Peter-Astrid's time there: I got to eat very well for a number of years, and these are the anecdotes I'll be dining out on forever. Above all else, I am proud of what my colleagues and I accomplished during the last phase of maddening foreshadow, a full quarter-century since Craigslist started chipping away at the business model's viability. Back then, I think there was even an assistant calendar editor, a luxury as unfathomable now as a newspaper erecting its own Art Deco mid-rise, or staples. Peter-Astrid gave a shoutout to Nuala Bishari of the S.F. Public Press and a fellow at ProPublica. They also mentioned Chris Roberts, a New York-based freelance journalist. Please follow them and read their work!
Last week, SF Weekly, the free alternative newspaper, announced that it would cease publication for the foreseeable future. The loss of the paper, which won numerous accolades, including a George K. Polk Award for investigative reporting on the U.S. Navy's handling of nuclear waste at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, has been called incalculable. Its closure echoes the 2014 demise of the Weeklys bitter rival, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and it leaves the city with no alt-weeklies. Yet, there was a time when alt-weeklies, their issues fat with pages of copy and advertising, were a vibrant part of the Bay Area's zeitgeist. We'll talk about the golden age of alt-weeklies and whether newer, online models of local journalism can fill that void.

On this week's episode of the SF Weekly Podcast we chat with our newest columnist, Stuart Schuffman — better known to many as Broke-Ass Stuart — and we discuss what is quite clearly the biggest party foul of the summer: Not getting the vaccine. In addition to joining the SF Weekly team, Schuffman is also co-hosting a web series about the resilience of San Francisco businesses. Join us!
This is why we can't have nice things. Just as Americans were finally beginning to truly let their guard down, mother nature and a fair amount of unvaccinated folks, joined forces to put our hot vax summer on hold. But, in all seriousness, the delta variant is serious. It is more contagious than previous strains of the novel coronavirus, it is more deadly for the unvaccinated, and it is even causing so-called "breakthrough" cases of COVID-19 in those who have received the vaccine. So, what are we to do? Well, none of us at SF Weekly is qualified to answer that question, so we called up Dr. George Rutherford from UCSF to get his take on the situation. Join us.

On this week's edition of the SF Weekly podcast, given that it's the Fourth of July and all, we are taking a look at how the United States Anti-Doping Agency caught Sha'Carri Richardson slipping (ugh) and how one Alameda County police officer be trippin' (double-ugh). Happy Birthday, America. God... you're old.

The Marys report on the formerly empty hotel rooms now housing previously homeless people in San Francisco. The city wants to close the "Shelter in Place"/S.I.P. hotels ASAP, but has promised to permanently house the current tenants at the hotels. Mary Crisis, who works inside one of the hotels, joins us. (The City's preferred term for people inside is "guests" - a weird term, given the extreme surveillance, lack of toilet paper, and no real plan for getting people into housing...at the same time as hundreds of thousands of condos sit empty throughout the Bay Area.) When it comes to making babies, it can often feel like there are only 2 choices and you have to feel 100% happy with your choice once you've made it. Oh, and also, no matter what choice you make, people will judge you. While I grapple with my own uncertain future, Nuala has made a decision that doesn't fit neatly into any category. The choice to have children is not quite like other choices in life because it's pretty untakebackable. But like many other choices, saying yes to one thing and no to another can be full of complicated feelings. - Featured Guest - Nuala Sawyer lives in San Francisco with her partner Bryce, dog Kazu, and cat Suki. Remember when you were a kid and you were afraid of that monster under the bed or in the closet? We've outgrown those monsters, right? No! They've just evolved! Instead of a snarling imaginary beast from childhood, today we hide under the covers from the three-headed monster of fear, shame, and envy. Fear creeps in and makes you want to turn tail and run in the opposite direction. Shame sneaks in and tells you that you are bad, you are worthless, you have nothing to offer, you don't deserve to be heard. Then envy comes along and sinks its claws into your psyche whispering the lie that you don't have enough, that you need is what's just outside of your reach. I'm tired of hiding under the covers from these monsters! I'm ready to fight back! I want a more hopeful and healthy future, are you with me, Kaizenites? I am pumped to introduce you to my friend, accomplished therapist and professional three-headed monster slayer, Tiffany McLain! Tiffany has a Master's of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology. She writes, speaks and consults about the psychology of upward mobility for young professionals. She has been featured in SF Weekly, Psychology Today and the Huffington Post. Get ready, my friends! This episode with Tiffany has a ton of helpful insights that you can use to slay the emotional beast that has power over your life so you can reach your full potential! Here are a few takeaways from today's podcast episode with TIFFANY MCLAIN: Understanding the difference between shame and guilt. Why it's unhelpful to look at social media for validation. How to get off of your ass and take action! Shame is a feeling, not a fact! Outline of This Episode [0:00] I welcome my guest, Tiffany McLain. [2:30] I go over some of Tiffany's background. [5:15] Tiffany talks about her professional work. [6:30] What led Tiffany to become a psychotherapist? [10:30] Understanding a disorganized attachment to success. [16:30] Chasing the desire to help others and make money along the way. [19:30] The difference between guilt and shame. [22:30] Why it's unhelpful to look at social media for validation. [26:00] What keeps people from taking action in their lives? [28:00] How do you lean into fear? [33:45] What is the source of fear? [36:30] Tiffany talks about owning her aggression and finding a breakthrough. [43:00] How your community forms your thinking. [46:00] Don't let envy sabotage your journey! [50:00] The joy of life as a misfit. [52:00] How to find a good therapist. [53:30] What does it mean to Own Your Self? Breaking the power of fear. In life, we come across good fear and bad fear. The fear that you feel when you are on a rollercoaster zipping through the air at ungodly speeds can feel great! Blood rushing, heart pounding, a healthy fear can make you feel alive! Then there is that shitty version of fear that can paralyze you and keep you on the couch all day binge watching Netflix instead of going to that networking event or taking a risk to start that business you've always dreamed about. What should we do with the fear that holds us back? Is there a way to break free from its power? Yes, there is! One of the best ways to get back in the driver's seat is by leaning into your fears. Get curious! Find out what it is that you are so afraid of. Too often we let fear of the unknown hold us back. When you get real and chase down the root of your fears, you start to reclaim that power! Real talk, there are things in my life that I'm afraid of. I've just committed to a major professional and financial investment and it has me on edge. I don't want fear to dominate and dictate the rest of my life. I'm willing to put in the time to drill down and face my fears because I know that when I do that I begin to break free! Join me, Kaizenites! Let's kick fear where it counts! Getting rid of shame. Shame is an ugly one, my friends. Fear is more of a known quantity but shame is really toxic and harmful. Shame is that negative and self-sabotaging story we continue to tell ourselves deep down in the pit of our souls. You aren't worthy of success. You don't have what it takes to succeed. No one could love you. You drive everyone away. These are just a few of the lies that shame tells us. Life can be so much better, free from the power of shame. It is surprisingly powerful and ridiculously toxic. The lies that shame tells us can feel so TRUE, but they aren't! The truth is, shame is a feeling, not a fact! A great way to start fighting back against the power of shame is to start identifying it when it pops up. Say it out loud or write it down! When you see or say that lie, it puts you in the position of power and helps you begin to break free from the spell it had over you. Kaizenites, we deserve to live shame-free! Hold on to that truth that shame is a feeling, not a fac Seeing envy for what it really is. When I think of envy, I think of Christmas. Seriously! I think back to all those commercials on TV and the ads they would send to my house in the mail filled with the latest toys and gadgets. I couldn't choose just a few items, I wanted every toy and every gadget! As an adult, I feel like I've outgrown that childish impulse of greed and envy… until I see someone who's made it. Then I'm that kid at Christmas all over again. I want to run over and grab their success and take it as my own! Envy has a way of tricking us in a way that feels good and self-righteous. I wouldn't come right out and say that I want to take something that someone has. I would tell myself that I only want what's fair. Sure, they worked hard to get what they have, but so have I! I deserve success, I deserve recognition, if the world were fair, I'd have it. You see where this type of thinking can lead, don't you? It leads to an unhealthy sense of entitlement. The last thing that our society needs are more people who feel like they are entitled to something that they haven't earned! What's the solution? Step away from the comparison trap! Resist the temptation to compare what you've done and where you are in life to the progress that others have made. I get it, friends, I follow some amazing thought leaders and influencers on social media and I get to interact with many successful people in real life but I refuse to compare my story to theirs. Don't let envy steer you in the wrong direction! You are better than that. Put your head down and put in the work, the rest will come, trust me! The Miracle Girl(Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill) The crowds keep coming. More and more every day it seems . . . drawn by rumor and whisper and desperate wish. Somehow they heard about the little girl on Shaker Street. They come to see eight-year-old Anabelle Vincent, who lies in a comalike state--unable to move or speak. They come because a visitor experienced what seemed like a miracle and believed it was because of Anabelle. Word spread. There were more visitors. More miracles. But is there a connection? And does it matter? Set against the backdrop of the approaching millennium--with all its buzz about reckoning and doom--this impressive debut novel is narrated by Anabelle herself; by her devoted mother, who cares for her child while struggling to make sense of the media frenzy surrounding her; by Anabelle's estranged father, who is dealing with the guilt of his actions; and by the people who come seeking the child's help, her guidance, and her healing. Yet it tells a larger cultural story about the human yearning for the miraculous to be true, about how becoming a believer--in something, anything, even if you don't understand it--can sustain you. Praise forThe Miracle Girl: "To believe or not to believe--that is the question facing all who are touched by the comatose 'miracle girl' at the swirling center ofAndrew Roe'sdazzling debut. But more than an exploration of the mysteries of faith, it's also the unforgettable story of one family's struggle against tragedy. The result is an uplifting miracle of a book." --Will Allison, author ofLong Drive Home "InThe Miracle Girl, we're reminded that the desire for miracles always connotes dissatisfaction, even as it articulates a hope. Roe deftly explores this paradox . . . [and] examines the strange responsibility of being believed in. A stunning, confident debut." --Peter Rock, author ofThe Shelter Cycle "An incisive and insightful critique of America, investigating where we put our faith and why . . . It's a novel about what it means to be human, to be lost or broken, a little or a lot, and to seek connection and hope and maybe even transcendence in the world around us." --Doug Dorst, author ofS. andAlive in Necropolis Born and raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Whittier, California,Andrew Roehas had his fiction published inTin House, One Story, theSun, Glimmer Train, The Cincinnati Review, Slice, Pank, Avery Anthology, Gigantic, Freight Stories, Failbetter, theGood Men Project, and other literary magazines, as well as the anthologiesWhere Love Is Foundand24 Bar Blues. His nonfiction has appeared in theNew York Times, San Francisco Chronicle,Salon.com,SF Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and elsewhere.
