Azaria Cherry is a 15 year old sophomore in the Heath and Specialities Program at Maury High School. At the age of 11, she learned that many minority girls attending title 1 schools were not receiving equal access to STEM activities. The following year, she created her own non-profit organization, ZincGirlz, which provides inner city girls with the opportunity to explore stem, learn the importance of self-love and higher education, and introduces girls to community stewardship. She also has her own positive affirmation business, PrettyGirlTeez, which sells everything from t-shirts to cups and ornaments. Outside of being a Girl Boss, Azaria enjoys participating in many after school activities, sports, and being a teen activist addressing numerous social issues affecting girls and women on local and global levels. Lastly, she takes great pride in completing countless hours of community service and philanthropist efforts. Upon graduating in 2022, Azaria is looking forward to studying medicine on a collegiate level and becoming a pediatric emergency physician. Currently her top three college choices are Spelman, Howard, and Hampton University.
Neal Friedman is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for the band Super Doppler. The members of Super Doppler formed out of Norfolk where most of the members went to Maury High School. From those humble beginnings, and after playing together for nearly a decade, they’ve developed a sound that pays homage to their 60’s and 70’s influences while maintaining a sound that is uniquely their own. Their latest self-titled release effortlessly blends those influences together - with hints of Steely Dan, The Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and other classic rock artists. Integral to the overall effect of their music are lyrics that place you somewhere in between the past and present. There are three core songwriters in the band - Harry Slater, Neal Friedman and Michael Adkins. I was happy to have Neal in the Lyrical studio to play a track from their recent self-titled release and another from their previous album "Moonlight Anthems."
The Newport News School Board recently asked the city for $50 million to rebuild now-closed Huntington Middle School. In Norfolk, the future of Maury High School remains uncertain. This all raises the question of: What do you do with older schools? Do you renovate? Do you replace? We want to know your thoughts as we explore this question. We’ll also take a dive into personal finance with Jeff Kreisler, the author of two bestselling books on personal finance. And in the last half of the show we’ll turn our eye to the new Ansel Adams exhibit at the Chrysler Museum of Art with museum curator Seth Feman. Tune in at noon to 89.5 WHRV-FM.
I am sooo excited to share this podcast episode with everyone! One of my goals when starting this podcast was to give young girls who are doing great work in school and there community a voice. Their are so many podcasts now that are geared and focused solely on adults, but the more I looked at my own group of young girls I realized that people need to know the positive things they are doing.I discovered Pretty Girl Teez when they started to follow our Instagram page. After reading their business bio on their page I was interested in learning more about the company and the owner. During this podcast you will learn more about the owner, Azaria Cherry and how Pretty Girl Teez and her non-profit, Z inc. came about. Here is her bio for you to read:Azaria Cherry is a 13 year old, rising freshman at Maury High School in Norfolk, VA. Since the tender age of 6 she has dreamed of attending Spelman and aspires to become a pediatrician. In fact, she is one of 48 students selected within the entire city of Norfolk to participate in the prestigious Maury Medical and Health Specialities program. A medical partnership between her high school and Eastern Virginia Medical School that allows students to take medical courses on top of their required Advanced Diploma workload. Azaria’s love for science, human rights, and entrepreneurship has allowed her to form her own organization for inner city youth girls and her own clothing business selling positive affirmation tee-shirts. In her spare time, she enjoys numerous volunteer community engagements, cheering on her high school JV squad, Forensics, National Jr. Honor Society, FBLA, and Swimming. Although her plate is extremely full she maintains nothing less than a 3.8 GPA. Over the next couple of years she looks forward to tackling more personal goals that she has set for herself.I hope you are inspired by her story and goals for life. I will forever be grateful for her, because by discovering her she forced me to research "How to record interviews for podcasting". I kept making excuses as to why I couldn't record interviews, but because I wanted people to learn about this #Phenomenal young girl I challenged myself to find the solution on how to record an interview. Please support and follow her on all her social media pages. She is having a Back to School drive in the Norfolk area. So if you are in the area reach out to her to see if she needs any assistance.Business Info:Instagram: @prettygirlteezInstagram: @z.inc_girlz - Non-profit Organization
On the next Another View, a conversation with political science professor, political pundit and author Melissa Harris-Perry. Her latest book is called Sister Citizen - Shame, Stereotypes and Black Women in America. In the book, Harris-Perry argues that persistent harmful stereotypes interfere with black women's claims to the full rights of citizenship. She says these stereotypes profoundly shape black women's politics, contribute to policies that treat them unfairly and make it difficult for black women to assert their rights in the political arena. Then, we'll talk with author and speech coach Christine Jahnke, author of The Well Spoken Woman. Jahnke will give us the speech and presentation skills we need to make a powerful impact. Plus, Lisa Godley introduces us to Hampton Roads latest star, 17 year old Maury High School senior LaQuanda Reid, who plays Dorothy in the Hurrah Players' latest production, the Wizard of Oz. It's an hour of female empowerment on Another View, Friday, October 21 at noon on 89.5 WHRV-FM.
