There are Fringe performers, there are Fringe stalwarts, and then there is Tim FitzHigham This Gentleman Explorer has spent decades at the Fringe, bringing shows about his madcap activities that he has attempted in the previous twelve months…most notably he was the first person to row across the English Channel in a bathtub, held the British and European record for the longest Washing Line, and was part of an obscure show called “Alex Horne: The Taskmaster” in 2010. I wonder what happened to that? Anyway, 2016 saw a much calmer FitzHigham in Edinburgh. Although not quite ready to present his latest daredevil moment, he once more joined with Duncan Walsh Atkins to bring their loving tribute to Flanders and Swann to the Fringe for its tenth show. Part tribute, part let's do some funny song, part ‘let's not forget about these titanic comedians', FitzHigham and Atkins continue to present their showcase of the comedic music from Michael Flanders and Donald Swann at the Fringe, Tim joined myself, and co-host Paul Levy from FringeReview, in 2016's Podcast Studio to talk about the show, his love of Flanders and Swann, and their importance to the cultural landscape. So let's go back to The Cabaret Bar, to 2016, and enjoy At The Drop Of A Hippopotamus.

Richie Scholl was living a pretty cool life. Having moved from Queensland Australia to Nashville Tennessee to further his career in the music business in 2007, he was performing on a regular basis, sometimes 6 nights a week in Music City. While doing so, he met his future bandmates Brian Powell (bassist), and Derek Smith (drums), and the 3 of them went on to form “The Richie Scholl Band”. Then Covid hit, and literally shut everything down, including the band's ability to play live together. Needing something to do to keep him and his bandmates busy, and not lose the creative flow that the three of them had started, Richie went on to write songs, and thus began the journey of recording their self-titled album “The Richie Scholl Band”. Born and raised in the cattle, coal, and rail town of Rockhampton, in Queensland, Australia, Richie Scholl  started playing bars and clubs, literally a few months after first picking up a guitar at age 13. Richie's live shows are a testament to the years spent “paying his dues” in front of a live crowd. Although it wasn't long before he was writing his own music, and eventually released his first album “Zeke's Wheel”. A record influenced by his early Rock influences by artists such as AC/DC and The Black Crowes. It wasn't until meeting with well respected Australian producer Michael Flanders in early 2006 however, that things started happening for Richie. Work was scheduled to begin on a second album, “The Blacktop Junkie's Guide To Richie Scholl” almost immediately. This album resulted in #1, and #5 singles on Country radio, and a #35 video on CMC Australia. During the recording of the album, the decision was made to introduce Richie Scholl and his music to the U.S market. After a brief trip to Nashville in 2006 to meet with labels and industry people, Richie relocated to Nashville, TN  in early 2007. www.therichieschollband.com Songs featured in this episode include: “No Man's Land” Written by Richie Scholl Performed by The Richie Scholl Band Copyright 2021 “Mama” Written by Richie Scholl Performed by The Richie Scholl Band Copyright 2021 “G.G.C.G.” Written by Richie Scholl Performed by The Richie Scholl Band Copyright 2021 “Lockdown” Written by Richie Scholl Performed by The Richie Scholl Band Copyright 2021 The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man I sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Michael Flanders and Donald Swann were masters of playful musical comedy, blending Swann's melodies with Flanders' lyrics and monologues into witty revues that won appreciative audiences around the world. Less caustic than Tom Lehrer and more modern than Gilbert and Sullivan, Flanders and Swann wrote songs that were a gentle poke rather than a cudgel -- and they sure had a thing for songs about odd animals (Gnu, anyone?). As always, find extended cuts in the comments at laughtracksradio.com and thanks for sharing our shows.

Stephanie Flanders is familiar to most of us from the years she spent as the BBC's Economics Editor, untangling graphs and statistics and treasury policies with great clarity and cheerful common sense. She left the BBC in 2013 and is now chief market strategist for Britain and Europe at JP Morgan Asset Management. But she's also the daughter of the late Michael Flanders, of Flanders and Swann, the writer of so many memorable comic songs - like "Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud". Michael Flanders died when Stephanie was only six, but she remembers the pleasure of pushing him around in the wheelchair he used after catching polio as a student. And because she didn't know him for long, she has spent time researching his life, combing through boxes in the garage, and re-discovering her father through his music. Music choices include some of her father's favourite songs, including a little-known song about gluttony which is a protest against the cruelty of foie gras. She includes too Glenn Gould's recording of a Haydn Piano Sonata which kept her going through long nights in Washington when she was writing speeches for Bill Clinton. The speeches were about impending financial crisis and, as an economist, Stephanie has weathered many financial crises, able to unpick the deepest workings of both the Treasury and the City and explain them to a mass audience. She is not afraid to shake up the status quo: an unmarried mother, she challenged David Cameron on tax breaks for married women, and her blog speaks out about "the over-mathematization of economics at the expense of common sense". The programme ends with a preview of a new recording of Donald Swann's "Bilbo's Last Song", setting words by Tolkien. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.
